#31 of Pokemon - To Catch Them All

Leo explores the Ice Path, catching new Ice Types and challenges Clair for the Rising Badge

Upon entering the Ice Path I brought out my Typhlosion since he was my only Fire Type Pokemon and he could keep me warm. "Typhlosion would you be able to travel with me outside your Pokeball. It's just it's quite cold and having you near will keep me warm..." Before I could continue Typhlosion had already agreed and kept me close as we traversed through the Ice Path. As I explored with Typhlosion I began searching for the new Pokemon that could be caught and was happy to find a Smoochum running around. Smoochum were the pre evolved form of Jynx and were mainly found in Johto. I hadn't known that Smoochum could even be found in Ice Path but I decided to have a go at catching it. "Typhlosion ready to battle?" Typhlosion however was concerned.

Typhlosion wanted to battle, yes because it would help his trainer, but at the same time, Typhlosion's job was to ensure his trainer was warm and healthy and not getting sick while in Ice Path. Eventually Typhlosion decided he would end the battle quickly so he could get back to Leo and keep him warm. "Typhlosion Flamethrower!" Smoochum couldn't dodge the attack and was greatly weakened by Flamethrower. "Pokeball go!" I watched as the Pokeball shook once, twice, three times before the capture was confirmed. "Smoochum has been registered to your Pokedex. Smoochum the Kiss Pokemon a Ice and Psychic Type. It tests everything by touching it with its lips, which remember what it likes and dislikes." Smoochum was as the Pokedex stated a very curious Pokemon that attempted to kiss everything she could to learn about them. Typhlosion begrudgingly accepted the kiss but blushed in embarrassment when I saw the altercation.

I returned Smoochum and continued on looking for new Pokemon eventually I came across the next new Pokemon and it was a Swinub and I had Typhlosion battle once again using Flamethrower he weakened the Swinub enough for me to throw a Pokeball. I watched as the Pokeball shook once, twice, three times before the capture was confirmed. "Swinub has been registered to your Pokedex. Swinub the Pig Pokemon a Ice and Ground Type. It loves eating mushrooms that grow under dead grass. It also finds hot springs while foraging." Swinub was a shy and reserved Pokemon but seemed to enjoy my company more than I expected for a newly caught Pokemon. Eventually I came across a ladder and descended downwards and spotted a Delibird a unique Pokemon that I desired.

"Typhlosion another Flamethrower please!" Typhlosion was having a great time all it ever took was one Flamethrower to weaken an Ice Type and allow me to throw a Pokeball. I watched as the Pokeball shook once, twice, three times before the capture was confirmed. "Delibird has been registered to your Pokedex. Delibird the Delivery Pokemon a Ice and Flying Type. It carries food rolled up in its tail. It has a habit of sharing food with people lost in the mountains." Delibird must have assumed I was lost and offered me a Sitrus Berry to quench my hunger. I quickly explained to the kind and helpful Pokemon that I was not lost and just navigating through the Ice Path and completing the Pokedex as I went.

Delibird seemed to understand and happily jumped up and down to show his excitement and happiness at having being caught. I was happy that he was happy that's all that matters to me. Heading onward I was blocked by several rocks that needed to be pushed in certain holes so that I could navigate the area. "Come out Furret!" Furret wasn't bothered by the cold as much as I was probably because he was covered in warm fur that protected him. "Furret can you push these rocks in those holes for me please?" Furret was happy to do so and began pushing the rocks as if they weighed nothing. Each rock fell down each of their respective holes allowing me to get through the Ice Path. After that was done I thanked Furret and returned him to his Pokeball before realising I needed to descend further down the cave.

Typhlosion jumped down first and had his arms extended outward as he gestured for me to jump and he would catch me as the drop was further that I'd thought. I jumped down trusting Typhlosion to catch me and he did. I landed right in his soft arms as he looked down at me happily. He gently lowered me to the ground and we continued exploring through the cave. After traversing more ice puzzles we headed up another level of stairs and reached a new level of the Ice Path. Continuing down the next floor I continued exploring and eventually managed to reach the exit and arrive in Blackthorn City. I thanked Typhlosion for everything he had done and quickly healed every one of my Pokemon to full health.

After exploring around Blackthorn City I realised that behind the gym there was a cave called Dragons Deb nut only those recognised by Clair the gym leader were allowed to enter there. As such I would need to defeat her in a gym battle to prove I was skill. Before entering I had done some training with the Ice Pokemon I had caught in Ice Path. Smoochum had quickly evolved into a Jynx meaning in total I now owned two Jynx. That might come in handy for the future who knows. Next there was Delibird, he couldn't evolve, but that didn't matter, he also knew a unique move called Present. Sometimes when Delibird used Present it did random amounts of damage and sometimes when using Present the damage would instead be replaced with healing the opponent. I guess Delibird were just very kind hearted and healed opponents whenever they defeated them.

Then there was my Swinub and through some training in the Ice Path he had already evolved into what I had battled against Pryce, a Piloswine. "Piloswine has been registered to your Pokedex. Piloswine the Swine Pokemon a Ice and Ground Type. Its shaggy coat makes it unable to see. It checks its surroundings with its sensitive nose instead." Piloswine was disappointed that he couldn't actually see me anymore, his beloved trainer and that made him terribly sad. However, it made him all the more determined to grow stronger and evolve once again into a Mamoswine. I must admit having a Mamoswine against Clair would prove to be a tremendous advantage. It didn't take as long as I had first thought, since to evolve Piloswine it needed to know the move Ancient Power, much like Tangela needed to know in order to evolve into a Tangrowth.

With training, Piloswine eventually learned Ancient Power and as such immediately began evolving into a Mamoswine. "Mamoswine has been registered to your Pokedex. Mamoswine the Twin Tusk Pokemon a Ice and Ground Type. Its impressive tusks are made of ice. The ice age is over and the climate has warmed, so this Pokemon's population has thinned." That wasn't good to know, but still now that Mamoswine had evolved he could now see clearly and decided to run me down in his excitement at being able to see his beloved trainer once again. His new size added extreme weight and he couldn't stay collapsed on me for as long as would of wanted to but he seemed to understand. Mamoswine also seemed extremely confident in his new evolved form and believed he was now strong enough to handle even the most powerful and aggressive Dragon Type Pokemon.

That made me feel as though I was prepared for my gym battle against Clair, but before I challenged her, I did some research on her team that she used and learned she used four Pokemon compared to other gym leaders I'd faced. That would be a fun challenge that I wasn't opposed to. Her first Pokemon she usually used was her Dragonair a pure Dragon Type which evolved from Dratini and was elegant in appearance. I should know as I owned one that was now a Dragonite. Speaking off Dragonite, she also used one of them in her matches too. Her third Pokemon was Kingdra a Pokemon I was hoping to obtain soon, but I needed a Dragon Fang in order to evolve my Seadra. Finally, her newest Pokemon she used was a Pokemon all the way from Unova, a Druddigon that was actually shiny. It would be a great challenge to face off against someone so powerful.

I decided to choose my team as way of perfectly countering hers in a way that would allow me to defeat her in the best and safest way possible. Mamoswine was my first choice as he was extremely strong now and possessed some really strong Ice Type moves that would be super effective against Dragon Types. I also decided on bringing Feraligatr into the match since he was able to use Ice Fang which was super effective as well. The other two took time to decide on but eventually I chose to use my new Jynx caught in Johto and finally, Granbull as he was my Fairy Type that had the strongest moves. That didn't mean my other Fairy Types were weak, I just wasn't certain whether they could handle such powerful Dragon Types even when they were immune.

At that I entered the gym and realised that this gym truly exuded power, Dragon Types were fearsome opponents I knew that much. Eventually I came across Clair who was waiting patiently at the edge of the arena. "Welcome challenger I am Clair and I am the user of the Dragon Types. Know that as the strongest member of the eight gyms I will not go easy on any challenger. So you better give me all you've got!" At that the referee announced the rules. "This battle will be a four on four match. It will be over when either sides Pokemon are unable to continue battling. Now trainers please send out your Pokemon."

At that Clair began sending out her first Pokemon, "come out Dragonair!" Dragonair appeared swimming as if through water, but was actually flying in the air. "Come out Granbull!" Granbull appeared glaring at the floating Dragonair who returned the glare with a slender one. "Dragonair Iron Tail go!" Dragonair's tail glowed a steel colour before he slammed down at where Granbull was. "Granbull dodge that!" Granbull jumped right over Dragonair who slammed into the ground. Dragonair didn't give in so easily and flew upward to where the stationary Granbull was as he began falling slowly back down to the ground from his massive leap. "Granbull use Play Rough!" Granbull waited until Dragonair got close enough and attacked all out slamming his fists against Dragonair with the super effective Play Rough.

Dragonair wasn't giving in so easily and whenever he got an opening, countered by slamming Iron Tail on Granbull which was super effective as well. Both Pokemon fought tooth and nail and weren't giving an inch. "Granbull get back and then use Dazzling Gleam!" Granbull jumped back dodging Dragonair's Iron Tail once again before releasing a powerful shining Dazzling Gleam causing massive damage to Dragonair but still Dragonair hung on. "Dragonair Ice Beam!" Dragonair launched Ice Beam but I had Granbull counter with a new move. "Counter that by using Fire Fang!" When the Ice Beam made contact with Granbull's fangs, he melted the ice immediately by using Fire Fang. The two Pokemon were definitely evenly matched that's for sure.

"Granbull once more use Play Rough and don't let up!" Granbull charged once more and Clair countered, "use Thunderbolt!" Dragonair unleashed a powerful Thunderbolt causing some decent damage. "Don't give in Granbull, push on through with Play Rough!" Granbull roared hearing the encouragement and broke through Thunderbolt surprising Clair as she witnessed Dragonair finally fall in defeat to the super effective Play Rough!" The referee saw the unconscious Dragonair and announced the result. "Dragonair is unable to battle, Granbull is the winner!" Granbull roared his victory before smiling at me, when I congratulated him on winning against such a tough battle. That was when I realised I still had three more Pokemon to defeat, so it was no time to celebrate yet.

Clair returned her Dragonair thanking it for such a tough battle, before she smiled in excitement happy to have such a fun and tough battle against a decent challenger. "My next Pokemon is Druddigon!" There it was Druddigon a alternate colour found commonly in their native region of Unova. I pulled out my Rotom Phone to understand about Druddigon. "Druddigon the Cave Pokemon a Dragon Type. Druddigon are vicious and cunning. They take up residence in nests dug out by other Pokemon, treating the stolen nests as their own lairs." That was a powerful looking Pokemon and I knew Granbull was exhausted from battling Dragonair so I decided to call him back for a break. "Return for now Granbull, you battled well, take a nice long rest. I might need your help later on." Granbull was happy to have a break.

I grabbed my next choice, "I need your help, come out Feraligatr!" Feraligatr appeared roaring at Druddugon who returned the roar with an equally powerful one. Feraligatr acknowledged that this Dragon Type would be tough, but he wouldn't lose on his trainers honour that he promised. "Feraligatr use Ice Fang!" Feraligatr dashed forward fangs breathing ice. "Druddigon Dragon Claw!" Druddigon countered slashing forward. Feraligatr and Druddigon collided clashing together. Druddigon's claws occasionally slashed at Feraligatr's body but Feraligatr effortlessly countered grabbing hold and inflicting super effective damage from Ice Fang.

"Druddigon use Flamethrower!" Druddigon tried to escape Feraligatr's fangs and unleashed a surprisingly powerful Flamethrower which pushed Feraligatr back and melted the ice free. Druddigon took advantage and escaped back to Clair while Feraligatr huffed in annoyance at the Fire Type move. "Druddigon Flamethrower again!" Druddigon breathed hot flames to Feraligatr, but as a Water Pokemon, Feraligatr would barely take any damage. I wonder if she had a plan up her sleeve. "Feraligatr, Hydro Pump!" Feraligatr countered with Hydro Pump and collision between Flamethrower and Hydro Pump created a cloud of steam which covered the battlefield.

"Druddigon into the steam!" Clair commanded as he Druddigon entered the steam disappearing completely. "Feraligatr stay on guard!" I warned wondering what Claire's next move would be. "Dragon Tail!" Druddigon burst through the smoke using Dragon Tail and scored a hit on Feraligatr. As a result, Feraligatr disappeared into his Pokeball and was replaced instead by my Jynx. Jynx was slightly confused but prepared herself for battle just a little earlier than expected.

"I had thought using Dragon Tail would allow me to gain an advantage however, it seems as though you've constructed your team to make full advantage of the Dragon Types weaknesses." Clair said as she thought of what she should do instead. "Jynx Ice Beam!" Jynx fired Ice Beam and Clair made her counterattack. "Druddigon use Flamethrower!" Druddigon countered using Flamethrower which collided with Ice Beam. Naturally fire was super effective against Ice. However, Druddigon was getting tired from the battle with Feraligatr and now battling against Jynx too.

As such, Ice Beam began to push back Flamethrower, "Druddigon give it your all!" Druddigon began pushing back with Flamethrower but Jynx increased her power and unleashed an even stronger Ice Beam which smashed through Flamethrower and defeated Druddigon. "Druddigon is unable to battle, Jynx is the winner." Jynx happily cheered at her victory and I happily congratulated her. Meanwhile Clair returned her Druddigon smiling, thanking it for such a tough battle.

"I choose Kingdra!" Kingdra descended into the pool and prepared itself for a battle. Against a Water and Dragon Type, Jynx's Ice Type moves weren't super effective. They would do some damage but might not be strong enough, I'd have to see how well she fares against Kingdra. "Your not going first then I will. Kingdra use Hydro Pump!" Kingdra fired a massive Hydro Pump and I hurried to counter. "Jynx Ice Beam!" Jynx formed Ice Beam and fired back. The two moves collided and ended up with Ice Beam freezing Hydro Pump but not pushing back enough to strike Kingdra.

"Kingdra use Smokescreen!" Kingdra created a Smokescreen which covered the battlefield, blocking Jynx's view and my view of what was happening. "Jynx, be careful, watch for Kingdra okay?" Jynx turned to me and nodded before concentrating on where Kingdra might attack from. "Flash Cannon!" Bursting from the smoke Kingdra fired Flash Cannon but Jynx just barely dodged. "Jynx Lovely Kiss!" While descending down, Jynx blew Kingdra a loving kiss which scored a hit. Kingdra then fell into a deep sleep while Jynx began panting, exhaustion was beginning to set in but she still wanted to finish this battle up.

"Jynx use Ice Beam!" Jynx used Ice Beam causing Kingdra to be partially frozen, while Clair desperately tried to awaken her Kingdra to no avail. "Jynx finish this up with one more Ice Beam!" Jynx formed her last Ice Beam when Kingdra suddenly awoke and Clair fired back one last time. "Flash Cannon!" The two moves collided and a massive shockwave and smokescreen formed. Both Pokemon were forced back from the resulting shockwave and we wondered what had happened to our respective partners.

When the smoke cleared the referee made his announcement, "both Kingdra and Jynx are unable to battle, this round is a tie!" At that I returned Jynx. "Thank you Jynx you battled really well, get a nice break." Clair too recalled her Pokemon before grabbing her last Pokemon. "This has been a really fun battle, but I won't let it end so easily. Here is my last Pokemon, come out Dragonite!" A massive Dragonite appeared towering over me but I refused to be intimidated, I owned a Dragonite and new what they were capable off. Instead I respected that incredible power.

"I need your help, come on out Mamoswine!" Mamoswine appeared stomping his feet into the ground trying to threaten the looming Dragon who smirked right back at Mamoswine. "Dragonite Flamethrower!" Dragonite started off by using the super effective Flamethrower which if it hit, it would do massive damage to Mamoswine. "Mamoswine Stone Edge!" Mamoswine wasn't having any of it and countered creating stone pillars which effortlessly blocked the Flamethrower.

"Dragonite ascend and use Dragon Claw!" Dragonite flew upwards and then descended rapidly claws glowing with power. "Mamoswine counter that with Ice Fang!" Mamoswine's tusks grew thicker and longer ice covering them entirely as he prepared to counter Dragonite. When Dragonite clashed with Mamoswine, the resulting moves creating a freezing shockwave. Mamoswine, began pushing Dragonite back while Dragonite tried to ignore the super effective Ice Fang.

Dragonite eventually broke free and saw an opportunity that Clair also saw. "Dragonite Dragon Rush!" Dragonite then flew upward before descending covered in Dragon Rush and incredible Dragon Type move but we weren't even close to finishing yet. "Mamoswine stop them by using Stone Edge once again!" Mamoswine stamped of the ground creating stone pillars which raced to intercept Dragonite who smashed through each one taking no visible damage from the attacks.

"Mamoswine Blizzard!" Mamoswine created a massive Blizzard in a final attempt to stop Dragon Rush, but it didn't stop the Dragonite and he smashed right onto Mamoswine's back. When the smoke cleared Mamoswine struggled to stand back up but eventually he did. "Mamoswine are you able to continue?" Mamoswine huffed his agreement, not willing to go down to Dragonite. "Mamoswine use Stone Edge!" Once more Mamoswine stamped on the ground creating stone pillars which raced toward Dragonite.

"Dragonite fly and dodge them!" Dragonite raced into the sky dodging the stone pillars before they could reach him. This all was making Mamoswine rather annoyed at the pesky Dragon Type but he remained calm, he had to win for Leo. "Dragonite finish this up with Outrage!" Dragonite's eyes glowed red as power swirled around it. Outrage was an incredible Dragon Type move but it provided Mamoswine with an opportunity.

"Mamoswine hang in there and use Ice Fang, no matter what, don't let Dragonite go." Mamoswine understood and followed my command faithfully, he trusted Leo to make the right decision and he never disappointed. Dragonite collided with Mamoswine's tusks, punching and smashing for several hits. Mamoswine endured the incredible onslaught and managed to counter occasionally but I was waiting for a certain effect to take place and when that happened our opportunity to strike would end it.

Dragonite suddenly stopped, eyes swirling with Confusion, "now's your chance to finish this, use Stone Edge at full power!" Mamoswine slammed into the ground, creating stone pillars which struck the confused Dragonite and created a massive smokescreen. Clair was shocked, not expecting Mamoswine to have managed to withstand the incredible Outrage. Eventually the smoke cleared and Mamoswine was standing watching Dragonite who slumped down to the ground unconscious.

"Dragonite is unable to battle and that means the winner is Mamoswine and Leo!" Mamoswine suddenly charged towards Leo happiness shining in his eyes as he almost slammed right into Leo but stopped knowing his own strength. "You did amazing Mamoswine, incredible, even." Mamoswine enjoyed the praise before he turned around hearing the sound of approaching human footsteps. "That was an incredible battle, your Pokemon must have been raised with extreme strength to withstand such powerful Dragon Type moves. As such, here is your reward, the Rising Badge!" Clair handed me my final gym badge from Johto and I happily placed it in my badge case.

"Also, since you've defeated me, you could go an explore the Dragons Den, behind this gym. It's where the strongest Dragon Pokemon live and where I train my Dragons. Perhaps there will be something in there that you might need. Anyway that's up to you to decide." At that I thanked Clair once more and returned to the Pokemon centre to have my incredible Pokemon fully healed. They had all battled incredibly I thanked them all extensively for putting up such a good battle.
