#28 of Pokemon - To Catch Them All

Leo challenges Jasmine for the Mineral Badge and then explores the Safari Zone and Mahogany Town

I entered the gym fully prepared the best I could to deal with some defensive Steel Types. I had with me Heracross who would handle Magnemite and Quagsire who I was relying on to overwhelm Steelix before it could do anything. I walked onwards and spotted Jasmine tending to some Magnemite that floated around. "Oh hello it's nice to see you again. I must thank you once again for caring for Ampharos. Please allow me to introduce myself once again. My name is Jasmine and I'm the leader of the Olivine City gym. I love the Steel Type, they're just so powerful and defensive too." At that we reached the battle field and the referee gave the rules. "This will be a two on two match and the winner will be decided when one trainers Pokemon are all unable to continue battling. Will both trainers please send out their Pokemon!"

At that Jasmine sent out her choice. "Magnemite come on out!" Magnemite appeared buzzing around the arena, at a surprising speed. "I need your help Heracross!" Heracross appeared also flying in the air. He observed Magnemite cautiously knowing that he needed to defeat Magnemite for his master and he would not fail. "Battle begin!" The referee declared and Jasmine started taking on a much more confident persona than before. "Magnemite use Thunder Wave!" Magnemite unleashed Thunder Wave attempting to paralyse Heracross. "Doge that then fly and use Brick Break!" Heracross flew around the electricity before landing a powerful and super effective Brick Break.

The damage seemed to be impressive as Magnemite was clearly winded and struggling. But because of it's ability Sturdy, it would always be able to hand on even against a super effective hit. "Magnemite Thunderbolt go!" Magnemite unleashed a massive bolt of electricity but Heracross dodged by flying upwards narrowly dodging Thunderbolt but just barely. "Heracross take to the skies!" Heracross flew upward and headed to Magnemite who glared defiantly at Heracross. "Heracross finish it by using Brick Break!" Heracross charged forward at an impressive speed but Jasmine wasn't finished yet. "Magnemite counter using Thunder Bolt!" Magnemite unleashed Thunder Bolt scoring a direct hit. Heracross was clearly struggling but managed to push through the Thunder Bolt shocking both me and Jasmine as he landed the final super effective hit against Magnemite finishing the battle.

"Magnemite is unable to battle, Heracross is the winner!" The referee declared and Jasmine returned her Magnemite with a smile, impressed at its performance against a Pokemon that has a disadvantage. "Heracross excellent work! Do you want to keep going?" Heracross turned to me pumped his arms and nodded his head he was all for continuing the battle as he was healthy as could be. "Come out Steelix!" Steelix appeared slamming into the ground. Seeing one up close was incredible, it was larger than Onix, but that was too be expected since it was the evolved form of Onix.

"Steelix use Stone Edge!" Steelix slammed its tail down on the ground creating stone pillars which raced toward Heracross who waited patiently for a command from his trainer. "Heracross smash those stones apart by using Brick Break!" Heracross waited until the Stone Edge was close enough before rapidly smashing each and every Stone Edge using Brick Break. When the barrage ended, we looked up but Steelix had vanished. Jasmine smiled at our confusion as she had silently sent Steelix underground using Dig.

"Heracross, take to the skies and be on guard!" Heracross flew upward where he believed he was out of range of Dig but when the ground rumbled beneath him, Heracross looked downward seeing the metal behemoth appear and use Iron Tail slamming Heracross painfully into the ground causing tremendous damage. That combination was incredibly powerful and I knew Heracross couldn't withstand much more of such brute strength. "Heracross come back and take a break!" Heracross was more than happy to take a break and let someone else take over against such a powerful behemoth.

"I need your help Quagsire!" Quagsire appeared smiling happily unconcerned about the Steelix which loomed above him. "Steelix use Iron Tail!" Steelix tail began glowing as he launched right towards the motionless Quagsire. "Quagsire use Muddy Water!" Quagsire created a huge wave of muddy water which circled around Steelix. It was super effective too so Steelix was having some difficulties. "Steelix escape by using Dig!" It was a smart move as Steelix used Dig which created a hole draining the battlefield. Steelix also used the move as a way of hiding from the new adversary.

"Quagsire use Mud Bomb down each of the holes, flush Steelix out of hiding!" I commanded and Quagsire jumped into the air before firing Mud Bombs down each and every hole. Following rapid explosions underground Steelix emerged covered in mud, the attack had been super effective and a success as well. "Steelix Iron Tail again!" Steelix lunged towards Quagsire but he was more than prepared. "Use Muddy Water once more!" Muddy Water stopped Steelix once more and the damage was enough to knock Steelix out.

"Steelix is unable to battle and Quagsire is the winner and that means Leo from Viridian City is the winner!" At that I cheered and embraced Quagsire who hugged me tightly at winning against such a powerful Pokemon. Jasmine returned her Steelix smiling at the bond between Leo and his Pokemon. "I had been wondering whether you were as strong as you are kind. I see now that you are both and as such, here is your reward the Mineral Badge!" At that she handed me the badge and I placed it in my badge case.

At that I left and got my Pokemon fully healed thanking Quagsire and Heracross for doing such a brilliant job against such a difficult gym for us all as a team. Now that I had earned a total of six gym badges from Johto I only had two more to go and it was going much quicker than I had expected. I knew I still had many more Pokemon still awaiting me to be caught though so that was all the more fun. I knew I needed to return to Ecruteak City to continue my journey to the east and so I asked Noctowl if he could fly me once again back all the way to Ecruteak.

Noctowl accepted happily and quickly took me off back to Ecruteak City. Once we landed I got his healed at the Pokemon centre to recover his stamina in the event he would have some battles awaiting him. At that I headed east and arrived at Route 42. Once there I saw a cave I could go through, but there was also a lake there too. "Come out Feraligatr!" Feraliagtr appeared staring down at the lake before him before turning to me. Without even asking me he jumped into the lake and gestured for me to climb aboard so he could ferry me across.

With his speed we reached the end of the lake, when Feraligatr stopped seeing something incredible staring down at his master. I looked around at what had caused Feraligatr to pause in shock and looked at the treeline seeing a familiar Pokemon staring me down. However, this time it wasn't alone, there was a different legendary with Suciune surprising me, it was Raikou. I hadn't a clue why they were there and why they were observing me. In the brief moment we had, Raikou darted off but Suicune remained but soon disappeared too when he saw a familiar trainer heading his way.

I turned around seeing Eusine approaching gasping as he saw Suicune for the briefest off moments. "Suicune, such a brave, powerful and refreshing Pokemon to see. I must admit Suicune seems to be wherever you go Leo and I wonder why that is? No matter, my desire to see Suicune is far greater than yours. I remember hearing the many myths my grandfather would say about Suicune and they are what attracted me to such a magnificent legendary Pokemon." Before I could even say anything he disappeared following after Suciune. Me and Feraligatr just watched as he went before Feraligatr clawed his head in confusion looking at me confused. I sighed smiling not quite understanding Eusine's desire to see Suicune so badly.

I continued exploring Route 42 with Feraligatr's assistance before I came across a Fisherman who challenged me with a Qwilfish and I sent out my Slowpoke having him use Confusion to defeat Qwilfish. I continued onwards and was challenged by a Pokemaniac who sent out a Nidorina and I sent out my Typhlosion having him use Flamethrower against Nidorina defeating her. He repeated Flamethrower against the Nidorino as well. Next I was challenged by a Hiker who sent out a Diglett and I sent out my Feraligatr having him use Ice Fang defeating Diglett. Next was a Geodude which was defeated much the same way. Next was a Dugtrio which was defeated with another Ice Fang.

After that battle, I had already arrived in Mahogany Town and healed my Pokemon up to full health. Once that was done, I decided to continue north and do some training before deciding to challenge the gym here in Mahogany Town. Heading north I reached Route 43 and was challenged by a Camper who sent out a Sandshrew and I sent out Meganium having him use Magical Leaf defeating Sandshrew. The next Pokemon sent out was a Sandslash which Magical Leaf defeated too. The final Pokemon sent out was a Zubat and I substituted for my Ampharos using Thunder Punch defeating Zubat. Heading north through some grass I came across a Girafarig and decided to try and catch it.

"Come out Yanmega!" Yanmega appeared flying right over to Girafarig. "Use Bug Buzz!" Bug Buzz was super effective and clearly weakened Girafarig for me to throw a Pokeball. I watched as the Pokeball shook once, twice, three times before the catch was confirmed. "Girafarig was registered to your Pokedex. Girafarig the Long Neck Pokemon a Normal and Psychic Type. While it sleeps, the head on its tail keeps watch. The tail doesn't need to sleep." Girafarig was healed up and nuzzled up to me cutely. Girafarig enjoyed a petting session before I continued on my journey. A Picnicker then sent out a Clefairy and I sent out my Forretress having him use Heavy Slam defeating Clefairy.

A couple of trainers up ahead were speaking about how they had been recently acquiring some new and impressive Pokemon at the Safari Zone which caught me attention. I completely forgot that there was even a Safari Zone to explore so I decided to take a short break from Route 43 and returned to Cianwood City and headed in the Cliff Edge Gate and entered the next Route of 47. A Hiker challenged me with three Dunsparce and I sent out my Heracross who used rapid Brick Breaks defeating each Dunsparce.

After defeating the Hiker I explored in the cave nearby and had the option to either go up or down a ladder. Heading down got me to a lake beneath the route meanwhile heading up got me higher on the route. Where I was then challenged by a Double Team who sent out Electabuzz and Magmar while I sent out my Quagsire and Corsola. Quagsire used Mud Bomb defeating Electabuzz while Corsola used, Bubblebeam defeating Magmar. Heading back down I was challenged by a Camper who sent out a Skiploom and I sent out my Ariados and had him use Poison Sting defeating Skiploom. The second Pokemon sent out was a Marill and had Ampharos come out and use Thunder Punch defeating Marill.

I continued heading along Route 47 and was challenged to a double battle once more by a Young Couple who sent out Onix and Cloyster. I sent out Jumpluff who handled Onix with Seed Bomb and brought out Pikachu using Thunderbolt against Cloyster. Continuing north I reached Route 48 which was close to the Safari Zone. Heading in a receptionist encouraged me to have a go at catching some Pokemon that were in the Safari Zone. The receptionist also informed me off what habitats were there as well, Plains, Meadow, Savannah, Peak, Rocky Beach, Wetland, Forest, Swamp, Marshland, Wasteland, Mountain and Desert. "As you might expect each habitat will house different Pokemon, some of which you may have never seen before through Johto. Here are 30 Safari Balls. The rules on your challenge are once you've used all 30 balls, your challenge is over. Would you like to participate?" I decided to nodding my head in full agreement.

"Excellent news, here are your Safari Balls, please have a safe journey and enjoy yourself!" At that I entered the Safari Zone and immediately began exploring the different environments finding each one was extremely healthy and filled with diversity. The first place I went was the Plains and began exploring the vast habitat. I saw so many Pokemon running through the plains and having such a fun time. This truly was a haven for all Pokemon. I saw Abra and Girafarig running around before my eyes caught the sight of a new Pokemon a Smeargle and decided to throw a Pokeball since battling wasn't allowed here.

I watched as the Pokeball shook once, twice three times before the Smeargle broke free smiling at me before gesturing for me to have another go laughing in amusement. Not one to be outdone I threw another and watched once again as the ball shook once, twice, three times before the catch was confirmed. "Smeargle has been registered to your Pokedex. Smeargle the Painter Pokemon a Normal Type. It marks its territory by using its tail like a paintbrush. There are more than 5,000 different marks." I wonder who managed to find that Smeargle had that many different marks. It must have been a long and arduous search but their tenacity payed off in the long run.

Next I explored the Meadow and came across a small lake where I saw several Poliwag and Poliwhirl swimming happily about. They took notice off me and most fled however one brave Poliwag remained and stared me down. I hadn't caught a Poliwag since Kanto and that evolved into a Poliwrath but I needed another Poliwag to evolve into a Politoed instead. I threw a Pokeball and watched as it shook once, twice, three times before the catch was confirmed. That was two catches already done and I hoped there would be many more waiting for me.

The Savannah was a interesting environment very open and far from trees and perfect for some herd Pokemon like Tauros and even Rhyhorn. I watched them happily run around enjoying their time together. Before I moved on to the next environment, the Peak was a very mountainous area and as such mostly Rock and Ground Pokemon lived here, but I was slightly surprised when a Magmar popped out of nowhere to say hello, before it disappeared down the peak. However, that wasn't the last surprise when a Psychic Pokemon began walking over to me. It was a Wobbuffet a new Pokemon I hadn't yet caught and an interesting one at that too.

Wobbuffet were Pokemon that couldn't directly attack their opponent, they could only use Counter to block physical attacks and Mirror Coat to block special attacks. I threw a Pokeball and watched as it shook once, twice, three times before the catch was confirmed. "Wobbuffet has been registered to your Pokedex. Wobbuffet the Patient Pokemon a Psychic Type. It desperately tries to keep its black tail hidden. This behaviour is said to be proof that its tail hides a secret." I happily moved onward to see what else lived here. Before leaving I spotted a Azurill hopping about and decided to throw a Pokeball and catch it. "Azurill has been registered to your Pokedex. Azurill the Polka Dot Pokemon a Normal and Fairy Type. Its tail is filled with nutrients necessary for growth. It plays by bouncing on its tail." Azurill was an unexpected catch as they were commonly found in Hoenn rather than Johto. I guess that showed how healthy and diverse the Safari Zone was.

The Rocky Beach sounded exactly as it would, a mountainous area which met the ocean creating a beach that was rocky. Slowpoke and Slowbro hovered at the edge fishing for anything but seemed to come up empty. Meanwhile Doduo ran along the beach racing one another and all in all having a great time. The Wetland was next and was practically covered in water and as such was inhabited by mostly Water Types, though I did see a few Farfetch'd enjoying the small patches of grassland untouched by the water. The Forest was actually kind of creepy, the way they were so tall that they almost blocked out the sun. Being their without your Pokemon to rely on made it almost creepy. That creepiness was increased tenfold when I heard the sound of someone or something laughing creepily in the distance. I assumed that more than likely it was some Ghost Type trying to pull a prank on me.

Eventually, the laughing got closer and closer and I won't lie that I was starting to get nervous hoping that I was right. When suddenly a Misdreavus appeared before me out of nowhere. The scream that came from my throat somehow encouraged me to throw a Pokeball in my sudden shock. When I opened my eyes, I heard Rotom registering the new Pokemon caught. "Misdreavus has been registered to your Pokedex. Misdreavus the Screech Pokemon a Ghost Type. It gets nourishment from fear that it absorbs into its red orbs. During the daytime it sleeps in the shadows." I wasn't surprised that Misdreavus had earned the title of a Screech Pokemon and was just glad that he wouldn't cause me any more frights in the future. But knowing my Pokemon I knew they continually waited for opportunities to scare me as a joke.

Leaving the Forest was a relief and I soon reached the next location, the Swamp where patches of water were separated by grassland creating the said Swamp. It was a difficult place to navigate and I was disappointed that I hadn't done research on proper clothes needed to ensure that I was ready for the potential habitats I explored. Hearing a screeching above me I looked upwards seeing a Murkrow watching me closely. If I looked close enough I'd wager it was laughing and judging me too. Taking a chance I threw a Pokeball and watched as it shook once, twice, three times before the capture was confirmed. "Murkrow has been registered to your Pokedex. Murkrow the Darkness Pokemon a Dark and Flying Type. It appears near travellers to lure them into deep forests. It is said to bring misfortune."

Murkrow had that unfortunate moniker of bringing misfortune just because they were Dark Types. People truly misunderstood the Dark Types and I would do everything I could to prove that these Pokemon weren't inherently evil but that they just desired to cause mischief whenever they could at the expense of whoever they wanted. The Marshland was next and I was surprised at how many Poison Type Pokemon made the Marshland their home. I saw Arbok, Koffing and Grimer exploring the Marshland but they didn't seem to be polluting the environment.

Next up was the Wasteland where the truly arduous and powerful Pokemon lived, you needed to be strong and capable to survive here and that's why I saw Machoke and Machop training extensively. Onix burrowed through the ground consuming rock as they went as well. I even saw a Fearow soaring through the sky, a rare sight in the Safari Zone. The Mountain was next and it was filled with Rock and Ground Types as one would expect. However, I did see a Lickitung exploring around which was interesting. I just hadn't expected to see such a rare Pokemon, a Larvitar stalked through the mountains before turning to see me staring it down.

Larvitar smirked confidently, as I threw a Pokeball at him watching as it shook, once, twice, three times before the catch was confirmed. "Larvitar has been registered to your Pokedex. Larvitar the Rock Skin Pokemon a Rock and Ground Type. This Pokemon eats soil. Once it has eaten a large mountain, it goes to sleep so it can grow." Larvitar was such a rare and unique Pokemon which grew into the incredible Tyranitar. I couldn't wait until I got one of them on my team. Next was the Desert which was covered head to toe in sand everywhere. Cubone, Marowak, Sandshrew and Sandslash made their home here as well.

At that I left the Safari Zone and handed my remainder of Safari Balls back to the receptionist before counting just how many new Pokemon I had caught at the Safari Zone. I had caught seven Pokemon and six of them were new. The only one already registered was Poliwag the others were new catches. Now that I was outside I began bonding with the new Pokemon almost immediately. Smeargle was first and was a very creative Pokemon and that made sense as he enjoyed painting. Smeargle was also quiet and preferred his own company most of the time but he did get along with me too.

The new Poliwag I'd caught was very adventurous, already desiring battles day in day out. I had trouble keeping up with him. Thankfully Feraligatr stepped in and began training with Poliwag getting the adventurous Pokemon to calm down. I thanked Feraligatr for taking over needing a break from the energetic Pokemon. Wobbuffet was a male since he didn't have lipstick on and was as too be expected a patient Pokemon who I'd have to learn about. Wobbuffet was a battler unlike anything I'd ever used before. Wobbuffet only knew Counter and Mirror Coat so it was up to me to choose the correct move to win for Wobbuffet. Azurill was much like Poliwag very energetic, but tired easy. Seemed as though Azurill was quite a young Pokemon compared to the others I'd caught.

Misdreavus and Murkrow got along with one another better than I'd expected. Since they both seemed to try and scare me on occasion they seemed to have some mutual common ground between them both. Still we got along well together and when I got back to Kanto something told me that they would get along swimmingly with Gengar. Finally there was Larvitar a very confident Pokemon for his size, when we exited he immediately challenged my Typhlosion to a battle. Obviously Typhlosion went easy on the Larvitary but even he was surprised at the tenacity this Pokemon had. I knew I'd have quite the Tyranitar when he eventually evolved.

Now that I'd caught all those Pokemon I returned back to Mahogany Town to continue exploring north and see what else there was around.
