#27 of Pokemon - To Catch Them All

Leo heads over to Cianwood to get some medicine for Ampharos and challenges Chuck for a gym badge

I continued heading south down Route 41 and bypassed a whirlpool carefully before being challenged my a swimmer who sent out a Goldeen and I sent out one of my newer catches, being Chinchou and had him use Spark defeating Goldeen. The second Pokemon was also a Goldeen which was defeated by another Spark. The final Pokemon was a Seaking the evolved form of Goldeen and I continued battling with Chinchou having him unleash Electro Ball defeating Seaking as well. A second Swimmer challenged me with a Gyarados and I knew I had to send out Chinchou once again. Since Gyarados was really weak to Electric attacks, a single Electro Ball was strong enough to defeat Gyarados. A second Gyarados appeared but was defeated much the same way with a second Electro Ball.

All the battles against the Water Pokemon had helped Chinchou grow much stronger, which surprised me when he began evolving already. "Lanturn has been registered to your Pokedex. Lanturn the Light Pokemon a Water and Electric Type. Lanturn's light can shine up from the great depths. It is nicknamed the Deep-Sea-Star." Lanturn was extremely happy that he had already evolved and in such a short time since being caught. I assumed it was because he was already close to evolving but Lanturn believed it was because he had such a loving and kind trainer who took such great care of everyone of his beloved Pokemon.

I continued heading west and was soon challenged by a Swimmer who sent out a Seel and I had Lanturn come back out for another battle. Lanturn used Spark defeating Seel with a super effective attack. Exploring further I was challenged by another Swimmer who sent out a Qwilfish and I sent out my Mantine and had him use Psybeam which was super effective against Qwilfish. The next Swimmer challenged me with two Horsea and I sent out Mantine and had him use Bullet Seed against the two Water Pokemon which was super effective. Another Swimmer challenged me with a Krabby and I sent out Mantine and had him use Bullet Seed against Krabby defeating him.

While exploring the route I had been seeing some islands that were blocked by whirlpools and rumours were circling that there was a large Pokemon that lived somewhere deep within the Whirl Islands. I had been wondering if it may have been the legendary Lugia that may be living deep under the Whirl Islands. However, for now I knew I wasn't strong enough to even begin to challenge such a powerful Pokemon and instead headed west where I reached dry land. I had managed to reach Cianwood City where I would be able to acquire the medicine for Ampharos and acquire a gym badge as well. First I headed to the Pokemon centre and had my Pokemon fully healed so that they would be in tip top condition for any battles that might come out way.

The next thing I did was visit the Pharmacy and spoke with the shop owner about a medicine for Ampharos. The shop keeper was understandably concerned for the lighthouse Pokemon understanding its importance to the safety of people and Pokemon and immediately handed me what he called a Secret Potion. He mentioned that the Secret Potion was one his strongest and as such it was only used in the event of an emergency. The current situation was definitely an emergency and as such I was more than thankful he had a cure for the sickness that ailed poor Ampharos. Now that was done, I decided to see what else was in Cianwood City apart from the gym.

I headed north to a beachy area where rocks were scattered around that seemed to have the potential to hold hidden treasure. "Heracross come out please!" Heracross appeared as he looked around seeing no Pokemon to battle. "Heracross can you please use Rock Smash and smash apart these rocks for me please?" Heracross grinend pumping his body as he smashed through the rocks before he suddenly paused when he saw a Pokemon that was actually inside the former rock. I looked over and saw it was a Shuckle a interesting Pokemon to find here. "Heracross use Brick Break please!" Heracross smashed Shuckle with a powerful Brick Break but Shuckle seemed to take the hit pretty well.

"Use Brick Break back to back!" Shuckle didn't even try and retliate instead it tried increasing its defences by using Withdraw but eventually he couldn't take anymore and I threw a Pokeball and watched as it shook once, twice, three times before the catch was confirmed. "Shuckle has been registered to your Pokedex. Shuckle the Mold Pokemon a Bug and Rock Type. It stores berries in its shell. The berries mix with its bodily fluids to become delicious juices." I quickly healed Shuckle up and he seemed to relatively fine. Shuckle did have some issues about moving mainly because he was a very slow Pokemon. However, by being slow he was also extremely patient. However, Shuckle and Heracross both suddenly stopped what they were doing when they stared directly at me.

I wondered why they were looking at me with suck shock in their eyes, however, I stopped when I suddenly felt breath on my neck and I turned around slowly curious as to what was apparently breathing down my neck. I was shocked to see it was Suicune the legendary Pokemon of water staring at me. It seemed to continue observing me glancing briefly at both Heracross and Shuckle who seemed to bow in reverence and respect to the legendary while I didn't know what to do. Suicune suddenly shot up glancing over at Cianwood before it spotted someone approaching. Someone Suicune had seem chasing it for many days now and so as much as it pained Suicune to leave it did.

Suicune suddenly darted of dancing across the water as if it wasn't even there. I was suddenly interrupted when a familiar face appeared, it was Eusine, the man who was chasing after the legendary Suicune. "That was Suicune wasn't it?" Eusine said to me as he looked over at where Suicune had disappeared off to. I nodded my head before Eusine continued. "Suicune is simply such a beautiful Pokemon, it races through towns and cities at such incredible speeds. Since Suicune seems to be interested in you, I must battle you, to get Suicune to notice me."

At that Eusine sent out his Drowzee and I sent out Pineco to counter him. Pineco managed to defeat Drowzee using Bug Bite which was super effective. Next up was his Electrode and I substituted for my Quagsire who used Mud Bomb to defeat Electrode as well. The final Pokemon Eusine sent out was a Haunter and I sent out my Noctowl using Extrasensory defeating Haunter. At that Eusine returned his fallen Pokemon before looking back to where Suicune had disappeared off to. "I must admit you are a powerful and talented trainer and that must be why Suicune had taken a shine to you. I must be leaving now to continue searching for Suicune. Good bye." At that Eusine disappeared to continue his search.

As a result of that short battle, I was surprised when Pineco suddenly began glowing signalling his evolution. "Forretress has been registered to your Pokedex. Forretress the Bagworm Pokemon a Bug and Steel Type. It is encased in a steel shell. Forretress' eyes peer out, but what lies within this Pokemon's shell is unknown." I was happy that Forretress had evolved and in his excitement in he spun rapidly creating some sand which did fly into my face. Forretress immediately apologised thinking he had caused his trainer harm, but I brushed his apology off, congratulating him on evolving knowing he had been training hard to reach this level of strength.

I returned to Cianwood and had my Pokemon fully healed before deciding to challenge the gym leader. I had done some quick research and learned that the gym leader of Cianwood was Chuck and he specialised in Fighting Type Pokemon. I entered the gym which appeared more as a dojo than a gym itself. Wondering inside I spotted the gym leader training with a Poliwrath and a Primeape together. "Excuse me, are you the gym leader?" I asked to be sure he was the leader and the man stopped his intense training turning to face me grinning heartedly. "Yes I am Chuck the gym leader here, are you here for a gym battle, young man?" At that I nodded my head replying, "yes I'd like ti challenge you to a gym battle!" Chuck laughed in excitement and exuberance. "I like that confidence young man, very well I accept your battle challenge."

At that a referee was called and gave the announcements for the battle rules, "this will be a two on two Pokemon battle, when one sides Pokemon are all unable to continue battling the opposing trainer will be declared the victor. Trainers please send out your Pokemon!" At that Chuck chose his choice, "I choose you Primeape! Primeape exited his Pokeball punching excitedly in the air grinning with confidence at having a battle against hopefully a tough opponent. "Heracross I'm counting on you!" Heracross appeared smirking at his fellow Fighting Type before preparing himself for a tough battle.

"Primeape use Cross Chop!" Primeape ran toward Heracross his fists extended to strike Heracross. "Heracross counter that with Brick Break!" The two Pokemon began trading blows each trying to overpower the other. Eventually the two backed off and seemed to respect one another, seeing that they both were quite evenly matched when it came to fighting power. "Heracross Aerial Ace!" Chuck was surprised but hid it, not expecting Heracross to have learned a Flying Attack but he countered the way a Fighting Type should. "Primeape, use Seismic Toss!" Primeape sidestepped Heracross and grabbed a hold of his horn before lifting him as if he weighed nothing.

Primeape then began swinging Heracross around before eventually releasing him. "Heracross take flight!" At that Heracross regained his footing and Seismic Toss failed. "Heracross use another Aerial Ace!" Heracross attacked the same way and Chuck countered having Primeape use Seismic Toss once again however Heracross avoided the attack and struck Primeape from behind with a powerful super effective Aerial Ace defeating Primeape. "Primeape is unable to battle, Heracross is the winner!" Chuck returned his Primeape grinning with excitement.

"It's been a while since someone managed to overpower my Fighting Pokemon like you did. Lets see what you do against my Poliwrath!" Poliwrath appeared muscles exuding with power as he glared down at Heracross who returned the glare with full confidence. "Heracross use Aerial Ace again!" Heracross charged toward Poliwrath who countered by using Poison Jab the two moves met in the middle and seemed evenly matched. "Heracross return for now, take a nice long rest!" At that I grabbed my second Pokemon.

"I need your help Bayleef!" Bayleef appeared smiling not at all intimidated by the looming Poliwrath that glared threateningly at him. "Bayleef use Magical Leaf!" Bayleef fired Magical Leaf which couldn't be avoided. However, Chuck wasn't planning on dodging. "Poliwrath use Poison Jab!" Poliwrath used Poison Jab to effectively block Magical Leaf before approaching and almost striking Bayleef. "Bayleef dodge and use Body Slam!" Poliwrath wasn't expecting Bayleef to suddenly jump over the Poison Jab before suddenly descending down and landing right on Poliwrath causing good damage. The Body Slam also had an unintended effect of paralysing Poliwrath too.

However, the Poison Jab was still effective as Poliwrath had positioned himself in a way that allowed him to score a super effective hit against Bayleef. Bayleef was struggling the attack had been stronger than I expected. However, both Pokemon were on their last legs. "Bayleef hang in there for just a little longer okay?" I shouted my encouragement which seemed to have an effect on Bayleef as he suddenly began glowing signalling his evolution. "Meganium has been registered to your Pokedex. Meganium the Herb Pokemon a Grass Type. Its breath has the fantastic ability to revive dead plants and flowers." Meganium stood up glaring renewed with strength as a result of evolution and the love he received from his trainer.

"Meganium lets finish this use Petal Blizzard at full power!" Poliwrath attempted to counter by using Poison Jab but was eventually overwhelmed by the super effective move. "Poliwrath is unable to battle, Meganium is the winner and that means the victor is Leo from Viridian City." The referee declared as Meganium ran over to me and almost ran me into the ground as his way of thanking me for such a good battle. "Well that was a fine battle young man. Here this is for you the Storm Badge!" At that Chuck laughed heartedly. "It has been such a long time since I've had such an interesting battle. Perhaps when I saw those two young trainers compete to challenge Leon." I was confused but Chuck laughed me off. "Never mind that, continue getting stronger young man!" At that he left and I exited the gym with a badge in toe.

Now that I had done everything I needed to at Cianwood I could return back to Olivine City and give Ampharos some medicine. "Come out Noctowl!" Noctowl appeared curious as to what I needed. "Noctowl could you fly me back to Olivine City please?" Noctowl agreed and allowed me to climb aboard as he took off flying across the ocean before arriving back at Olivine City. I returned back to the Lighthouse and entered arriving at the top floor where Jasmine was watching over Ampharos. "Oh, you've returned. Will that medicine cure Ampharos?" Jasmine asked me and I nodded hoping it would.

At that I gave Jasmine the Secret Potion and she administered it to the Ampharos and soon enough Ampharos awoke with a spring in its step. Jasmine was delighted, "oh that's wonderful news, Ampharos you're feeling much better now!" Ampharos agreed before thanking me with a surprisingly powerful hug, even stronger than my own Ampharos. "Thank you very much trainer. As I mentioned I'm the gym leader of Olivine City. If you'd like to have a gym battle against me. I'm more than happy to accept. I wonder whether your just as strong as you are kind. It will be an honour to see that myself." At that Jasmine returned back to the gym and awaited my challenge.

Before challenging the gym I did some training with my Pokemon to ensure they were strong enough to handle some powerful and defensive Steel Types. Since Meganium recently evolved, I had assumed that both Croconaw and Quilava would be close to evolving as well. As such I temporarily concentrated on getting them to fully evolve. After battling against a few wild Pokemon and trainers that demanded rematches my Pokemon had grown strong enough and achieved their evolutions. First was Quilava who evolved into a Typhlosion after some arduous battles. "Typhlosion has been registered to your Pokedex. Typhlosion the Volcano Pokemon a Fire Type. It attacks using blasts for fire. It creates heat shimmers with intense fire to hide itself." Typhlosion latched onto me without burning me with his even more impressive looking flames that erupted from his back as if he were a volcano itself.

Next was Croconaw who was the first starter Pokemon of Johto that I had caught and it seemed almost poetic he was the last of the starters to reach their final evolved forms. Still with patience from me and determination from Croconaw he began evolving into Feraligatr. "Feraligatr has been registered to your Pokedex. Feraligatr the Big Jaw Pokemon a Water Type. It usually moves slowly, but it goes at blinding speed when it attacks and bites prey." Feraligatr showed that blinding speed when he grabbed a hold of me and hugged me close to his chest. I could hear him rumbling his appreciation at reaching his final evolutionary form. Feraligatr admittedly looked way more vicious and stern than he ever had before. However, underneath that outward appearance was a Pokemon that loved his trainer.

Feraligatr and Typhlosion both fist bumped one another at reaching their final evolved forms before I continued on training everyone else ensuring that nobody fell behind. Furret wouldn't be used in the Steel Gym if only because Normal attacks would be bounce right of Steel Types and I didn't want to place him in harms way. That was the same for my Noctowl too even more so since Flying also had a limited effect against defensive Steel Types. However in their own right they were growing even more powerful than before. Ledian and Ariados were in the same boat unfortunately, Steel Types were just really good defensively and as such they couldn't be used for their own safety. Strangely they didn't mind and just enjoyed spending time with me and getting stronger day by day.

Lanturn enjoyed being around Olivine City, training in the ocean was the way to go and boy did he enjoy it. When not battling Lanturn encouraged his trainer to climb aboard so that Lanturn could show his master the beauty of the ocean. Lanturn absolutely loved being with his trainer every day that went by. Pikachu had been getting stronger and I had also introduced him to my former Pikachu who was now a Kantonian Raichu. Pikachu had been learning a lot from his evolutionary form and it was nice to see Raichu again. Togetic had long since grown up from being a baby Pokemon and had now decided that he would keep growing stronger for the sake of the loving trainer that raised him from an egg.

Ampharos was happy being in Olivine City and was happy that the lighthouses Ampharos was feeling much better. Still, Ampharos was getting stronger too, strong enough to be confident that he could handle Steel Types with no trouble. However, I researched that Jasmine used a Steelix a part Ground Type which was immune to Electric Attacks a huge problem for an Ampharos. Sudowoodo had a type disadvantage as well, being a pure Rock Type, but he was such a cheerful Pokemon that he didn't seem to mind not battling.

Jumpluff could take to the skies effectively and dodge many attacks, however, Grass Types had hardly any effect against the defensive Steel Types. After some tough training with Aipom, the cheeky Pokemon, still enjoyed pulling pranks on whoever he could whenever the opportunity presented itself. However, as I was saying, while we were training, Aipom learned a new move, Double Hit and as such began evolving as well. "Ambipom has been registered to your Pokedex. Ambipom the Long Tail Pokemon a Normal Type. They work in large colonies and make rings by linking their tails, apparently in friendship."

Ambipom was quick to show me what friendship between Ambipom's and their trainers looked like when Ambipom grabbed me with his tails and formed rings around me, just as the Pokedex stated. Ambipom twirled me around in a strange makeshift hug that showed his love for me. I congratulated Ambipom and was very happy for him. Sunflora was in much the same shape, being a Grass Type he wouldn't be a good choice against Steel Types but he didn't seem to mind. Sunflora much preferred to be around his beloved trainer.

Much like with Ambipom needing to learn Double Hit in order to evolve, I was happily surprised when training Yanma when he learned the move Ancient Power and began evolving as a result. "Yanmega has been registered to your Pokedex. Yanmega the Ogre Darner Pokemon a Bug and Flying Type. By churning its wings, it creates shockwaves that inflict critical internal injuries to foes." Yanmega showed me the power of those shockwave attacks by simply blowing his wings and creating powerful shockwaves. They didn't harm me though, Yanmega was extremely careful to avoid unintentionally hurting his trainer in his happiness at evolving.

Quagsire was probably one of my best choices for battling against Jasmine and her Steel Types. I knew she had a Magnemite which was part Electric and therefore wouldn't be able to effect a Ground Type like Quagsire. Not only that Steel Type moves weren't very effective against Quagsire too. Even more good news, was that Water Type moves would be super effective against Steelix as well. Unown unfortunately wasn't much of a battler, but that didn't bother me or him. Well, actually, Unown was disappointed it wasn't of more assistance to it's trainer. Still I loved Unown like I loved my other Pokemon.

Forretress had taught me much about the defensive capabilities of the Steel Types since he was a Steel Type and had impressive defensive capabilities. Being on my team allowed me to get an insider into understanding the weaknesses and strengths he possessed. Forretress was a real team player. Snubbull was very quick to evolve, I must have caught him at a high enough level so that only a few battles in and he had already achieved his evolution.

"Granbull has been registered to your Pokedex. Granbull the Fairy Pokemon a Fairy Type. It is timid in spite of its looks. If it becomes enraged, however, it will strike with its huge fangs." I saw first hand how Granbull went through such a personality chance. At one point Granbull was hugging me in his happiness at evolving and when the bush nearby began shaking. Granbull felt threatened that something was going to attack me and as such, charged right into the bushes and dealt with the interloper without showing any mercy. I wasn't terrified of Granbull, I still saw that inner cuteness when nobody was around or when we weren't battling either.

Shuckle was my newest Pokemon that I'd caught so before we began properly training. I wanted to get to know my newest Pokemon better. I soon found that he was a quiet and shy Pokemon, but he didn't shy away from having battles whenever he wanted to protect me. Speaking off defence though, Shuckle had excellent defence perhaps even more so than a Steel Type, however offense was where Shuckle struggled. We had been working on increasing both attack and defence slowly but surely. I also think, that since Shuckle noticed that Suicune, a legendary Pokemon, had taken such a shine to his new trainer. Shuckle new that this trainer was either extremely kind and strong or had something incredible waiting to be discovered.

Heracross was by far one of my best choices for battling against the Steel Types, his physical strength was incredible. His Brick Break had gotten far stronger thanks to our training and so I had confidence he could handle himself against Steel Types. I did wonder though whether Heracross would of preferred to sit the gym out since he had worked extremely hard against Whitney and Chuck too. Heracross however convinced me he was more than happy to keep battling in order to secure me wins.

Corsola was a rather cute Pokemon and could battle on land, but much preferred to battle in the water. I respected that about him and as such, trained extensively around the water and beaches This is what convinced Corsola that I was his best trainer ever. Mantine was much the same as Corsola, yes Mantine could battle on land but being a Pokemon that dwelled deep within the ocean. Mantine felt much more comfortable battling in the ocean. I had been concerned that I would be neglecting them but the two water Pokemon disagreed. My Slowpoke was in a similar situation as well, until I managed to get a way to get a Slowking that is.

Stantler had been having a quiet time as of recently, but in our training sessions he had been getting stronger, much stronger. Stantler had even learned some pretty good moves as well, since he was caught. He had learned a move too deal with his weakness to Fighting Types Zen Headbutt. Me and Stantler cheered together when he learned that move. Miltank had also been in the same position, I wasn't overly sure whether Miltank really preferred battling. However, Miltank sure showed me that she could take care of herself against almost any Pokemon with her tenacity and will.

After all the training I had therefore decided that I would use Heracross since he was my only Fighting Type and Quagsire since his dual typing of Water and Ground would be excellent against Steelix and Magnemite if needed.
