#26 of Pokemon - To Catch Them All

Leo challenges Morty and explores the Olivine Cities Lighthouse

I headed back north up to Ecruteak City and healed up each and every one of my Pokemon and while that was being done I had decided on what three Pokemon I would use in my gym battle against Morty and his Ghost Types. The first team member would be Croconaw as if he could get close enough he could use Bite which was a Dark Type move and would be super effective against Ghost Types. The second team member I wanted to use would be Noctowl as he could use Foresight if the Ghost Pokemon attempted to hide using their ghostly abilities. Finally, the last Pokemon I chose was Flaaffy, his electric moves might be able to paralyse the Ghost Pokemon which would be a great opportunity to take advantage off if it worked though.

I headed on inside and came across the gym leader, "welcome to the Ecruteak City gym, my name is Morty and I'm the gym leader. Are you here for a gym battle?" Morty asked me curiously, he was used to challengers going to the Burned Tower, believing that was the gym. "Yes my name is Leo and I'm here for a gym match." Morty nodded and directed me to follow him to the battlefield. The field itself was covered in shadows and definitely suited Ghost Types that was for sure. The referee then announced the rules. "This will be a three on three Pokemon battle and the winner will be determined on who has the most remaining Pokemon at the end. Now trainers please send out your Pokemon!"

Morty started off, "I choose you Gastly!" Gastly appeared grinning, floating around the arena laughing and cackling all the while. "Come on out Flaaffy!" Flaaffy appeared trying to keep track of the disappearing and reappearing Gastly that was showing itself to be a tricky opponent. "Battle begin!" At that I started. "Flaaffy Thunder Shock!" Flaaffy attacked unleashing Thunder Shock, but Gastly simply disappeared into the shadows. The darkness was proving to be a massive problem. "Gastly Shadow Ball!" Gastly appeared right behind Flaaffy. "Behind you Flaaffy dodge it!" Flaaffy turned to dodge but Shadow Ball scored a direct hit. Luckily Flaaffy seemed to be alright. "Thunder Shock once more!" Flaaffy used Thunder Shock but once again Gastly disappeared into the shadows.

"Flaaffy we're forcing them out whether they like it or not! Use Flash!" Flaaffy exuded a bright light that chased away the shadows forcing Gastly to appear blinded by the light. "Now Flaaffy use Thunder Shock!" Gastly couldn't hide away and was hit hard with Thunder Shock. "I see you've done your research on Ghost Pokemon. Impressive, but we're not done yet! Gastly Shadow Ball once again!" Gastly launched Shadow Ball. "Flaaffy counter that with Thunder Shock again!" The two moves collided but Thunder Shock managed to break through Shadow Ball and score a massive hit on Gastly knocking it out.

"Gastly is unable to battle, Flaaffy is the winner!" The referee announced as Morty returned his fallen Gastly before he smiled in interest. "I choose you Haunter!" Next up was Haunter the evolved form of Gastly. "Haunter use Hypnosis!" Haunter tried to force Flaaffy to fall asleep but Flaaffy managed to dodge by avoiding looking at Haunter but that proved to be a mistake on my part. "Haunter Shadow Ball!" Haunter threw a Shadow Ball that was much stronger than Gastly's and it scored a massive hit on Flaaffy. I was much too slow to give a good command and so Flaaffy took a massive hit.

"Flaaffy are you alright?" I asked concerned seeing Flaaffy struggling to stand. Eventually Flaaffy managed to stand and glared in defiance and frustration at Haunter before I made the decision to swap them out. "Return Flaaffy, you battled really well. You've earned a break." At that I grabbed my next Pokemon. "I need your help Croconaw!" Croconaw appeared glaring at Haunter who smirked at the jumping Pokemon. "Haunter Confuse Ray!" Morty commanded as his Haunter created yellow orbs and threw them at Croconaw.

"Dodge them Croconaw, then get close to Haunter!" Croconaw observed the orbs and managed to dodge them, just barely before jumping right at Haunter. "Now use Bite!" Croconaw opened his jaws and prepared to use Bite but Morty smiled. "Haunter disappear!" Haunter disappeared into thin air confusing Croconaw and irritating me as well. "Haunter use Shadow Ball!" Haunter appeared directly in front of Croconaw and threw Shadow Ball right in his face causing massive damage. "Croconaw use Water Gun!" Croconaw blasted forth with Water Gun but Morty countered with another Shadow Ball blocking Water Gun effectively.

The resulting clash of moves created a smokescreen which blocked everyone's view. "Croconaw into the smoke and use Bite!" Croconaw disappeared into the smoke interesting Morty as he wondered what the challenger was planning to do from the smoke. "Haunter use Sucker Punch!" I hadn't expected Sucker Punch but it was a smart move. From within the smoke, Croconaw was surprised when Haunter appeared and managed to score a hit with Sucker Punch. However, Croconaw noticed he had a small opening and latched onto Haunter's hand by using Bite and scoring a super effective hit. Haunter flailed around trying to dislodge Croconaw but Croconaw was determined to win for Leo and continued the attack.

When the smoke eventually cleared, Haunter was out and Croconaw was exhausted from the damage he had taken. "Haunter is unable to battle, Croconaw is the winner!" At that Morty returned his Haunter with a smile of interest. "I'm very impressed, your Pokemon have a strong bond of trust between you and them. It's a sight to behold. However, my final Pokemon will show you the true terrors of Ghost Pokemon. I choose you Gengar!" Gengar appeared grinning excitedly at the exhausted Croconaw. "Croconaw return, take a break for now!" Croconaw was exhausted and battling Gengar would be too much for him, even if he may have a move that's super effective against Ghost Pokemon.

"I need your help Noctowl!" Noctowl appeared seeming to understand that this battle was proving itself to be quite difficult with tricky Ghost Pokemon. "Gengar disappear into the shadows!" Gengar quickly dipped into the field laughing as he went but thankfully I had a strategy against that. "Noctowl use Foresight, find Gengar!" At that Noctowl scanned the battlefield arena and quickly located the grinning Gengar. Upon being found Gengar had to reappear and Morty realised this battle would come down to pure power rather than hiding and striking.

"Noctowl Air Slash!" Noctowl fired Air Slash, but Gengar effectively countered by using Shadow Ball which blocked the Air Slash causing a massive explosion. That Shadow Ball was a powerful move, but luckily it would have no effect against Noctowl who was a Normal Type. "Gengar use Sludge Bomb!" Gengar fired multiple Sludge Bombs trying to score a direct hit, my main worry was the potential poison that could be inflicted. "Dodge that!" Noctowl took to the air and dodged by a thread before I made a counterattack.

"Noctowl Extrasensory!" Noctowl launched the powerful Psychic attack and scored a massive hit against Gengar who couldn't dodge by hiding in the shadows. "Gengar break free and use Sucker Punch!" Gengar managed to escape the attack, which was impressive in itself before landing a powerful Sucker Punch right at Noctowl. "Are you alright Noctowl?" I asked concerned and Noctowl turned to me nodding his head before focusing on the battle. Noctowl knew he only needed to land just one more attack and that should end the battle. However, he knew that this Gengar was powerful enough to turn this battle around given the chance meaning he needed to be careful and rely on his trainer to make the perfect decision.

"Gengar another Sucker Punch!" Gengar approached zigzagging around the arena, approaching Noctowl with speed but I saw my chance. "Noctowl use Extrasensory!" Noctowl landed a super effective Extrasensory which finally defeated the impressive Gengar. "Gengar is unable to battle, Noctowl is the winner and that means that Leo is the winner!" Morty returned his Gengar while Noctowl returned to embrace me with his wings, happy about having proven his strength to his beloved trainer and scoring him a win.

"That was such a good battle, your Pokemon fought with such vigour that we fell behind almost immediately. Still this is your reward the Fog Badge." Morty handed me the Fog Badge and I placed it in my badge case happily. "Thank you very much, that battle was really fun!" I thanked him and Morty then spoke about something else. "Oh, I should mention. I believe you met my friend Eusine? The one whose chasing after Suicune? He told me about you and your brief meeting with the legendary beasts. In our battle I saw the talent clear as day that attracted those to you. I don't think that will be your last meeting with those legendaries. Call it a hunch!" At that Morty disappeared into the gym, while I left and headed to the Pokemon centre to have my team fully healed. They had all battled brilliantly and I was so impressed.

After my Pokemon were fully healed I continued heading on the road, west to Route 38 and had a look on my Rotom phone to see what new Pokemon were available for me to catch. I was pleasantly surprised when Rotom told me that on this route, I could find, Miltank and Snubbull some impressive Pokemon too catch. As such I headed on and began searching through the grass. It didn't take as long as I had expected to find the first Pokemon a Snubbull. "I need your help Quilava!" Quilava appeared flames ready as he stared down the Snubbull.

"Quilava Flame Wheel!" Quilava ran forward striking down Snubbull which seemed to do the trick. "Pokeball go!" I threw the Pokeball and watched as it shook once, twice, three times before the catch was confirmed. "Snubbull has been registered to your Pokedex. Snubbull the Fairy Pokemon a Fairy Type. Small Pokemon flee from its scary face. It is, however, considered by many people to be cute." When I healed up Snubbull I agreed when the cute Pokemon snuggled up to me in happiness at having such a loving trainer. Snubbull may have looked slightly scary to some Pokemon, but too me, I saw a Pokemon that was just misunderstood.

At that I asked Snubbull if he had seen any Miltank around here and Snubbull jumped up and down, gesturing for me to follow him through the forest that surrounded the route. Eventually we stopped and Snubbull pointed at a lone Miltank that was meandering through the forest. "Come out Heracross!" Heracross appeared seeing the Miltank. Miltank knew something was up and turned around curiously seeing a trainer and Heracross racing towards her. Miltank wasn't bothered by the potential battle and decided to have a go. "Heracross use Brick Break!" Heracross charged to Miltank ready to use Brick Break and Miltank started rolling with Rollout.

Luckily though, this Miltank hadn't already been using Rollout so it wasn't as strong as it could have been which meant that Heracross easily managed to overpower Miltank and score a super effective hit with Brick Break. At seeing the weakened Miltank I threw a Pokeball and watched as it shook, once, twice, three times before the catch was confirmed. "Miltank has been registered to your Pokedex. Miltank the Milk Cow Pokemon a Normal Type. It is said that kids who drink Miltank's milk grow up to become hearty, healthy adults." I healed up Miltank and was happy to see that Miltank shared no grudge towards me or my Pokemon and instead happily embraced me, Snubbull and Heracross. Heracross was a tough Pokemon who tried pushing away from the hug but eventually accepted it blushing in either annoyance or embarrassment.

At that I continued on the route and I was challenged by a Sailor who sent out a Wooper and I decided to have a battle with my new Miltank and Miltank showed me that she was exceptionally powerful using a few Stomps to defeat Wooper while avoiding Water Gun attacks as well. Next up was a Lass who sent out a Flaaffy and I sent out my Quagsire having him use Mud Shot to quickly defeat Flaaffy. The next Pokemon sent out was a Psyduck and I substituted for Snubbull for his battle turn. A Headbutt proved strong enough to defeat Psyduck too. The next trainer was a Bird Keeper who sent out a Doduo and I sent out Flaaffy and had him use Thunder Shock. This was then repeated for the next two Doduo as well.

Continuing on a Beauty then challenged me with a Hoppip and I sent out Quilava having him use Flame Wheel defeating Hoppip. The next Pokemon sent out was a Skiploom and Quilava used Flame Wheel defeating Skiploom as well. Next a School Kid challenged me with a Mr. Mime and I sent out my Ariados who used Poison Sting defeating Mr. Mime. I continued heading west and soon reached Route 39 as my next stop. Soon enough, I was challenged by a Psychic who sent out two Slowpoke. Ledian handled them both by using a few Aerial Aces winning the battle.

I continued heading south and was challenged by a Sailor who sent out a Poliwhirl and I sent out Bayleef who used Razor Leaf defeating Poliwhirl. Next up was Krabby and Bayleef won again using Razor Leaf. The final Pokemon sent out was a Raticate and I substituted for my Heracross having him use Brick Break defeating Raticate. Next I was challenged by a Pokefan who sent out a Pikachu and I sent out my Quagsire who used Mud Bomb defeating Pikachu too. Cotninuing on a second Pokefan challenged me with another Pikachu but Quagsire won using Mud Bomb once again.

At that I continued heading south and managed to reach Olivine City. The first thing I did was get my Pokemon healed up before deciding to have a look around the city. It wasn't long before I found the gym but it was temporarily closed as the gym leader Jasmine was tending to a sick Pokemon at the lighthouse. I decided that it would be wise to visit the lighthouse and see whether there was anything that I might be able to do to help out. It wasn't difficult to find the lighthouse as it was the biggest building in the entire city.

Upon entering I headed up the first floor and was challenged by a Gentleman who sent out a Noctowl and I sent out my Flaaffy who used Thunder Shock defeating Noctowl. Next a Sailor challenged me with a Poliwag and I sent out my Skiploom having him use Seed Bomb defeating Poliwag. The second Pokemon sent out was a Poliwhirl and it too was defeated by Seed Bomb as well. Thanks to all the battles Skiploom had against these Water Pokemon he had finally gained enough experience and had begun evolving already.

"Jumpluff has been registered to your Pokedex. Jumpluff the Cottonweed Pokemon a Grass and Flying Type. Blown by seasonal winds, it circles the globe, scattering cotton spores as it goes." Jumpluff was happy at having reached his final evolved form and I was just as happy for him too. Heading up a level I was challenged by a Bird Keeper who sent out a Pidgey and I sent out Flaaffy and had him use Thunder Shock. A second Pidgey was defeated much the same way. His other three Pidgey were all defeated with repeated Thunder Shocks as well.

Flaaffy had been growing much stronger thanks to all these Flying Types and surprised me when he had begun to evolve just as Jumpluff before him. "Ampharos has been registered to your Pokedex. Ampharos the Light Pokemon a Electric Type. The tip of its tail shines brightly. In the olden days, people sent signals using the light from this Pokemon's tail." It made sense when I saw the lights that came from Ampharos' tail myself. Ampharos was obviously very happy at evolving and showed me when he lifted me off the ground in his excitement. Eventually he released me and blushed in embarrassment, it seemed as though he had gotten carried away in his excitement. I congratulated him nonetheless happy that he had reached his final form too.

I headed up another level and was challenged by a Gentlemen who sent out a Growlithe and I sent out Slowpoke and had him use Water Gun defeating Growlithe. His second Pokemon was also a Growlithe and Slowpoke defeated him as well with another Water Gun. Next a lass challenged me with a Marill and I sent out my Pikachu having him use Thunderbolt against Marill defeating it. Eventually I reached the next floor and was challenged by a Sailor who sent out two Krabby but Pikachu used Thunderbolt defeating the two Krabby too. Next was a Bird Keeper who sent out two Spearow who were defeated by my Ampharos who used Shock Wave. Then a Fearow was sent out but Ampharos used another Shock Wave winning the battle too.

A Sailor then challenged me with a Poliwhirl and I sent out my Sunflora having him use Razor Leaf against Poliwhirl winning the battle. Next a second Sailor challenged me and sent out a Machop and I sent out Togetic who defeated Machop with Extrasensory which was super effective. Next up was Poliwhirl and I had Pikachu come back out and use Thunderbolt defeating Poliwhirl. A second Machop came out and was defeated by my Ledian who used Aerial Ace to knock Machop out. At that I headed up the stairs and reached the very top and saw a women by a Ampharos that looked very sick. I approached and the women introduced herself. "My name is Jasmine I'm the gym leader of Olivine City. If your here for a gym battle, I'm sorry but I have to decline. You see this Ampharos has been lightning the seas at night however, it recently got sick and now its struggling badly. I heard that there was a pharmacy in Cianwood City but its across the ocean and I don't want to leave Ampharos unattended in its current condition."

At that Jasmine spoke once more. "I know, would you be able to go to Cianwood City and pick up some medicine for Ampharos please? There is also a gym in Cianwood if you go there you can challenge that gym as well." I decided to accept if only because that Ampharos looked at me with eyes that begged me too help. I couldn't leave a Pokemon suffering so I resolved to get there as soon as possible, defeat the gym leader, acquire the medicine and return as quick as I could. At that I headed back down the lighthouse and began planning my next move.

The first thing I needed to do was get my Pokemon healed up from those battles in the lighthouse. Once they were fully healed I headed west and reached Route 40 which was meeting the ocean. That reminded me I'd need a Water Pokemon to transport me across the ocean and I decided on getting Croconaw to do so. "Croconaw come out!" Croconaw appeared and immediately jumped into the water enjoying the open waves. "Croconaw would you be able to help me get across to Cianwood City?" Croconaw agreed before turning around, gesturing for me to climb aboard.

I did so and Croconaw began paddling across the ocean and we soon came across our first opponent, a Sailor sent out a Tentacool and I sent out Togetic having him use Extrasensory defeating Tentacool before repeating it against the Sailor's second Tentacool as well. As Croconaw continued onwards, he suddenly stopped as he spotted something beneath the open seas. Croconaw turned to me and gestured for me to wait while he got something. Croconaw descended down and fired a Water Gun at a unknown Pokemon attracting its attention. It was a Corsola which emerged firing a Spike Cannon at Croconaw who counetred with Water gun blocking the move.

"Croconaw use Ice Fang!" Croconaw was faster than Corsola and managed to land a powerful Ice Fang which froze Corsola, taking the opportunity I threw a Pokeball and watched as it shook once, twice, three times before the capture was confirmed. "Corsola has been registered to your Pokedex. Corsola the Coral Pokemon a Water and Rock Type. Many live in the clean seas of the south. They apparently can't live in polluted waters." That was good to hear, that meant this area of open water was healthy and free of pollution. I healed up Corsola and he was happy to have a trainer it seemed as he swam along with me and Croconaw enjoying the ocean.

Next was a Swimmer who challenged me with a Staryu and I sent out my Corsola for his first battle and he used Spike Cannon defeating Staryu too. Next was a Swimmer who sent out a Shellder and I sent out my Noctowl having him attack from the air using Air Slash defeating Shellder before it could even react. The second Pokemon sent out was a Wartortle and I stopped to admire the beautiful Pokemon remembering when I once owned a Wartortle but it had evolved into a Blastoise. I briefly wondered whether he was doing alright before remembering I was in a battle and had Noctowl use another Air Slash defeating Wartortle while dodging Water Pulse as well. A second Shellder was sent out but was also defeated by Noctowl too.

Continuing South I reached Route 41 and saw that the route seemed to be covered in whirlpools which looked rather dangerous. I gestured for Croconaw to try and keep his distance from the whirlpools for his and our own safety. Croconaw was in full agreement and kept well away from the whirlpools to avoid having any accidents.

Another Swimmer challenged me with a Staryu and I sent out my Jumpluff having him use Seed Bomb defeating Staryu. The second Pokemon sent out was a Shellder and Jumpluff used another Seed Bomb too defeating Shellder. The next Swimmer challenged me with a Shellder and I sent out Ledian having him use Aerial Ace while dodging Icicle Spear. The second Pokemon sent out was a Tentacool and Ledian used another Aerial Ace defeating Tentacool as well. The final Pokemon sent out was a Tentacruel and I substituted for Togetic for his Psychic attack. I was concerned as to whether Togetic could handle such a powerful looking Pokemon but he proved to be that he had grown up to be strong enough and used Extrasensory defeating Tentacruel as well.

As I continued exploring Route 41, I was surprised when a large Pokemon breached out of the water and I noticed it was a Mantine and I decided to have a go at catching it. "Come out Noctowl!" Noctowl appeared staring down the curious typed Pokemon. "Noctowl Air Slash!" Noctowl fired Air Slash but Mantine disappeared under the water before attacking with Water Pulse but Noctowl managed to dodge expertly. "Noctowl Extrasensory!" Noctowl managed to land a clean hit against Mantine allowing me to throw a Pokeball at the weakened Mantine. I watched as the Pokeball shook once, twice, three times before the capture was confirmed. "Mantine has been registered to your Pokedex. Mantine the Kite Pokemon a Water and Flying Type. It swims elegantly, mindless of Remoraid hitching onto its broad fins. It is naturally docile."

I saw just how docile Mantine was when I released him and gave him a potion to help recover his strength he swam right on over trusting me immediately even after we had battled just earlier. Mantine even approached Croconaw and introduced himself, which Croconaw accepted with a warm smile happy to have a fellow Water Type join the team. While exploring further, I spotted a Chinchou as well and decided to approach and have a go at catching it. "Yanma come on out!" Yanma appeared flying over to me wondering why I was in the middle of the ocean before he realised he was supposed to battle a Chinchou.

"Yanma use String Shot and try and catch that Chinchou!" I wasn't sure how well String Shot would work against a Pokemon that was surrounded by water but I gave it a go and the attack seemed to be a temporary success until Chinchou dove down in the water and String Shot seemed to wash away. Chinchou retaliated using Electro Ball but Yanma dodged by increasing his speed using Speed Boost. "Now use Uproar at full power Yanma!" Yanma unleashed a loud and powerful screeching noise that was painful to me, Croconaw and Mantine but especially to Chinchou. I'd have to apologise for the others but I'm sure they understood.

Chinchou tried to duck under the water but the attack still affected him, Yanma continued until he stopped when he saw his trainer begging him to stop the attack. At that Yanma cautiously observed the Chinchou wondering whether it was going to cause his trainer any problems. When Yanma was certain it wouldn't Yanma gestured for me to throw a Pokeball which I did. I threw a Pokeball and watched as it shook once, twice, three times before the capture was confirmed. "Chinchou has been registered to your Pokedex. Chinchou the Angler Pokemon a Water and Electric Type. It discharges positive and negative electricity from the tips of its antennae to shock its foes."

Chinchou was a interesting Pokemon too me, I'd never seen a Pokemon with that type combination before, a Water and Electric Type was very unique and provided me with many opportunities especially against the multitude of Water Pokemon used by the trainers on this very route. Chinchou seemed to enjoy the time we spent together as well.
