Okay, here the next chapter of TEC. I swear, if I can just get past this part I'll have an easier time writing this. It's just that this is a lot more different than what I have on paper. It follows the same plot, it's just a different way of going about it. I don't really like re-writing entire chapters so I mix it up a little so it doesn't feel like I'm re-writing anything. Anyway, I was gonna post two days ago, but my internet quit working on me every time I pushed "save" or tried to send a message, but then it just wouldn't go anywhere. The strange thing was when I went to play SSBB, and my wifi was working just fine. Weird. Anyway, I think this came out a little rough, but I leave that for you decide. It's why I'm doing this in the first place. Besides, I gotta follow my personal set of rules for writing and rule #4 says: "If you should fail, never cry. Study your failure and let it give birth to success." So with that in mind I bring you this chapter. Comments and Votes are welcome and very much appreciated.

"So... What do we do now?" Nina asked.

"I really don't know." Eevee replied. Both pokémon were standing some distance away from Celestic Town in front of an extremely thick fog. They had tried to navigate their way into it a little to see if it was safe, but couldn't see two feet in front of their faces. The unbelievably thick fog was impossible to navigate through, so they gave up trying.

"We could try asking around." the young vixen suggested.

"I guess, but who in their right mind would know how to get through that?" Both foxes turned around and headed right back into town. Along the way, they asked some of the local pokémon if they knew a way either through or around the fog. The answers they got were either ridiculous or just not helpful. They spend most of the afternoon doing this. The only useful information they got was from a machop who told them to ask the bird pokémon to fly them over it. It was a good idea, but the only bird pokémon around were the rarely seen staravia's, and they could only carry one or two of them at a time. Even if they did manage to find enough willing birds, Nina informed Eevee that she and Perry were afraid of heights.

Eventually, they gave up and headed back to campsite. The trip was mostly silent. Eevee was thinking of a solution to their problem. Of course there was the option of going back through the mountain and back through the city where they were rescued, but he didn't want to run the risk of them getting captured again.

"Think of anything yet?" Eevee shook his head.

"No. If we can't think of a way to get through that fog, we might have to go back and find another path to take."

"Oh. Well, I'm sure you'll think of something." she said encouragingly, which made the brown fox smile.

"I sure hope so. If not... I'll just say you kept bothering me."

"What? I'm not bothering you." she said defensively.

"Nina, stop bothering me, I'm trying to think of a way out of here!" Eevee whined playfully before taking off. She caught on and started to give chase to the brown fox. They playfully chased each other all the way back to camp, where they were met with a... unwelcome guest. The treecko had returned and he looked like he was waiting for them to return.

"Hey, buddy. How's it going?" treecko asked with a sky grin. Nina started to growl at him while Eevee gave him a cold stare.

"What do you want?" eevee asked slightly irritated.

"I don't want anything. I actually came to help you out, as an apology for my earlier actions." Both foxes looked at him as if he had shot a flamethrower out his mouth.

"You... want to help us? Who said we needed help?"

"You'd be surprised at how fast word spreads around a forest. The word is that an eevee and vulpix are asking how to get through that thick fog on the other side of town. I may not look it, but I know a pokemon or two that can assist you." he said with a confident grin. Eevee still couldn't believe what he was hearing. The treecko that caused them so much trouble was willing to help them?

"No way." he thought. _"There's no way he would help us." _

"Why would you want to help us?" Nina asked. Treecko's grin grew wider.

"Why you ask? Let's just say I have something to gain from helping you guys out. I won't tell you what it is, but we'll be helping each other out in the end. What do you say, buddy? Help me help you."

In a strange way, that sort of made a little bit of sense to the brown fox. In exchange for his help, they'll be helping him out at the same time, but that didn't really settle with him too well. The fact that he didn't trust the lizard wasn't helping either. He looked over at Nina for any sort of help on the matter. He nudged her with his paw to get her attention. When she looked at him, he saw that she was thinking the same thing he was. With a slight nod toward her, he turned back to treecko.

"Fine, we'll accept your help, but you better not be tricking us." he said sternly.

"No worries. Now that we're partners, we have to be completely honest with each other. I know I didn't introduce myself properly before, but the name's Westen." he said as he stepped closer and offered his paw for eevee to shake. Eevee was hesitant at first, but he shook the treecko's paw. "Alright, now let's talk about my fee."

"What? What do you mean fee?!" Eevee exclaimed as he yanked his paw back.

"You didn't think I was gonna help you free did you? I want you to do something for me before I go find this guy. It's only fair. I work, and you pay me in some kind of way that satisfies me." he explained coolly.

"Is it really that hard to find someone you know? Shouldn't you know where they are?"

"If I knew where they were, I wouldn't be asking for payment. Now, come over here so we can discuss this in private." Westen put an arm over Eevee's neck and started leading him to a group of nearby bushes. Nina tries to follow them, but the treecko put his paw up to stop her.

"Hey, why can't I come?!" Nina exclaimed. Westen simply looked back at her.

"Sorry, kid, but this is for grownups." Nina huffed and went to sit under a tree, obviously not happy about being left out of the conversation. She heard footsteps approaching a few moments later and looked to where they were coming from. Perry, Kato, and Tammy came running toward her.

"See, I told you guys I heard someone over here." Kato said to his counterpart and the desert mouse.

"Hey guys. Where were you?" Nina asked once they approached her.

"We were just playing hide 'n' seek." Perry answered.

"Where's eevee? I know I heard him around here." Kato asked.

"He's over there talking with that treecko about some deal they made." she answered point ing the bushes where she saw them go into.

"A deal? What kind of deal?" Nina told them about what she and eevee discovered on the other side of town and the events that led up to where she was now.

"So... Westen wants to get paid some kind of way for helping us?" Perry asked.

"Yeah. I hope he doesn't ask for anything to demanding. It's bad enough no one trusts or likes him." The fire fox said as she sat back down.

Mia was walking back to camp with two freshly caught magikarp in her arms. She still felt tired from the race with the floatzel, but it was worth it in the end.

(Flashback)

Mia had gained the lead thanks to the last move she pulled off. Her body was slowly tiring out from the lack of rest after her intense battle with the garchomp. She was at her limit and hunger was the only thing that was keeping her going. She was just a few yards from claiming her prize, but then a huge orange blur swam past her at an amazing speed. It was the floatzel again. As soon as he swam past her, he looked back and stuck his tongue out at her, followed by a short laugh.

"No this bastard didn't!" she thought. With new found determination, she pushed herself harder; unfortunately, Mia could only come up a few feet behind him. After a couple minutes, the current got a lot stronger and faster. Both Mia and the floatzel were at the rivers' mercy. Mia's swam through enough water to know what was up ahead and thought of a plan that might guarantee a win for her. She just had to pick the right moment to put her plan into action.

The floatzel was simply enjoying being in the lead and was having the time of his life. He's never met anyone who could make racing this exciting since he evolved. He was too fast for the other water pokemon to keep up with him, even when he slowed down. Also, they never seemed to want to attack him to get ahead and win, which is another reason why Mia excited him so much and wanted to see how much of a fight she'd put up. He knew they were headed right towards a waterfall and he was pretty sure she knew as well. He wanted the race to end as soon as they reached it so that when they got to the bottom, they could rest.

The current was gaining more strength by the second. Both sea weasels were determined to get their reward. They could see the end of the river coming up fast and were preparing to end the race right there. The magikarp jumped high out the water and over the edge of the falls. The floatzel and Mia followed suit and leaped off the edge of tbc falls as well. This was the moment they've been waiting for. Mia had no idea what to expect when she jumped. She glanced down and was shocked at the how high they were from the bottom. She estimated that they were easily at least 100 feet in the air, but she didn't dwell on that for long, she had a lunch to win afterall. Floatzel spun his body in mid-leap and sent a sonicboom at the airborne fish, knocking it down faster toward the pool of water below. Mia used aquajet and hit floatzel's side as she dived past him, making him spin around uncontrollably. She followed up with an ice beam and froze the fat fish. Now all that's left is to dive into the pool below and claim her prize, or at least that's what she thought. A chill ran up the base of her spine as her tails were suddenly encased in a block of ice. She glanced up and saw that the floatzel used his ice fang once he regained control of his body. Mia was pulled down by the weight of her now frozen tails and in a few seconds, made a huge splash in the pool below.

Mia struggled to break free of the ice as she sunk to the bottom. Try as she might, she could not break free of her frozen prison. Now that the adrenaline has run it's course, fatigue quickly set in for the sea weasel. Her body felt like completely shutting down again to regain it's strength, but she was too hungry to want to sleep again.

"Having fun on your down time?" said a familiar voice. Mia stopped struggling and looked to see the floatzel smiling at her with the frozen fish in his arms. It was at that moment that she realized she had lost the race and her lunch, the second source of nutrition she's had all day. She didn't want to believe that after all her effort, she still came up short. Nothing had been going her way all day and this added loss was not settling to well with her at all. She growled at him and wanted to tear him apart.

"What do you want?!" Mia snapped back. "Did you come to rub your victory in my face?!" The floatzel gave her a confused look.

"What? No, I just-"

"Just what?! I just had the worst possible morning in my entire life! I had my stuff stolen in my sleep by a treecko, got chased out of town by an angry old man, was ditched and left to die in a fight with a rampaging garchomp by the same treecko, spent the rest of the morning pushing that same stupid lizard through a forest so one of the younger pokemon I'm looking after can defrost him, and you come out of nowhere to challenge me to a race for the only decent meal I'll have all day! I'm tired! I hurt in places I didn't know existed, and my tails are frozen in a block of ice! So forgive me if I'm a little pissed off at the moment and don't share your enthusiasm!!!"

The floatzel was stunned at her outburst, not so much the yelling as what she was yelling. It didn't sound like the kind of morning he'd be jumping up and down about either. He felt like a jerk for making her race for food just so he can satisfy himself. He wasn't used to females yelling at him because he was a nice guy, so it made him feel even worse.

"Um... Sorry to hear that. Would you... like to join me for lunch?" he asked, hoping he can make it up to her. Mia stared daggers at him, but the thought of having a decent meal for the first time today was enough to get her to calm down... a little.

"Fine. Just get me out of this thing." she said with her arms crossed. The floatzel smiled and swam behind her with his tail glowing white. In one swift motion, he broke the ice with his iron tail attack. Relieved to be out of her frozen prison, she made her way to shore with the floatzel swimming behind her. Once Mia was on dry land, she lay on the ground facing the sky in complete exhaustion. The floatzel stood over her a few moments later with the magikarp in his paws.

"You want me to feed it to you or can you eat it yourself?" he asked smiling.

"I can feed myself just fine." Mia replied. She sat up and received the, now dead, fish. She bite into the fish and was surprised at how good it tasted. She's had magikarp before, when she was still wild, but it's never tasted this good before. She hungrily took a second bite and another, not believing how delicious it was.

"I see you really like it, though I'm not surprised. You did work hard to get it." floatzel said as he took a bite of his own fish. Mia turned to respond to him, but she nearly choked at the sight of him eating another magikarp.

"W-where'd you get that?!" she blurted out.

"This? I caught this little guy earlier today. I was hoping to have two fish, but then you came along and sort of changed my plans. I was going to let you have the fish after the race." Mia rolled her eyes.

"If you were gonna give me the fish anyway, how come you made me race you in the first place?"

"Take a bite of this." floatzel said as he offered his fish to Mia. She took a bite of his fish. "Now take a bite of yours." She took a bite of her fish and was shocked at how much better hers tasted. She looked at him a bit confused. "I told you earlier that food tastes better if you work for it. Get it now?" Mia nodded and took another bite of her fish.

They spent the rest of their lunch talking and getting to know each other. After that, floatzel offered to catch a couple fish for her friends as an apology for the trouble he caused her. She accepted the offer and rested a little while longer so she'd have enough strength to make it back to camp. All she had to do was follow the river back upstream and she'll eventually get back.

(End Flashback)

Mia could see Nina, Perry and the twins, Kato and Tammy, gathered together in the distance, seemingly to be waiting for something.

"Hey, guys!" she called out. All of them turned to her and jumped up in excitement. Once Mia had reunited with the kids, minus Kai, she noticed that someone was missing. "Where's Eevee?"

"He went to talk with Westen." Nina replied.

"Who's Westen?"

"The treecko from earlier." Mia growled at the mention of the green lizard.

"What's he doing here?" she asked as she dropped the fish. Nina explained the situation they were in and why the treecko was talking to Eevee. Mia didn't like the whole idea of getting help from a thief. "I don't think we should trust him. He's caused to much trouble for everyone already." Everyone nodded in agreement.

"Hell no! I'm not doing that, you idiot!" Eevee shouted. He jumped out the place he was talking with Westen. The treecko was right behind him.

"Why not? It's just a simple little task." Westen said trying to calm the brown fox down.

"No, it's not! Why of all things do you want me to do that?!"

"Because you agreed to do what I wanted, no matter what it was." Westen replied.

"I didn't think you would tell me to do that!"

"Well, tough cookies! You're gonna owe me big after this anyway, so start paying up!" Westen snapped. Both of them failed to notice the group of pokemon looking at them, until Mia stepped forth.

"What's going on?" she asked as she approached the two. Eevee and Westen looked at the buizel, but eevee quickly turned his head away from her. She stared angrily at the treecko. "What did you tell him to do?!" Westen gave her a sly smile.

"Nothing too demanding, but if either of us tells you what it is, I won't help you." Mia growled and grabbed Westen by his throat.

"You little twerp! If you don't stop your bullsh-" She stopped as she realized what she was about to say in front of the kids. "... If you don't quit the crap, I'm gonna leave you in a block of ice for that garchomp to find you."

"If you get rid of me, then your chances of getting out of here are long gone. I'm sure that vulpix over there already told you that none of the other pokemon here are very helpful. So, if you want to get out of here without having to travel blindly into the unknown, I suggest you put me down." She thought about his explanation and admitted to herself that he was right. From what she was told, they weren't going anywhere anytime soon, unless they wanted to head back the way they came. Westen had her beat this time and he knew it. She growled a little as she slowly released her grip on him. The green lizard lightly rubbed his throat. "So, what's it gonna be Eevee? You want my help or not?" Eevee looked at Westen, Mia and the kids. He felt like they were counting on him and was being put on the spot. Of course he wanted to get out of this place as soon as possible and move on, but he already didn't like working with this lizard and was tempted to call the whole thing off. He struggled with himself for a few moments before giving in.

"Alright, I'll do it, but not now. I'll do it after you get the job done."

"How do I know you won't do it after I get my people?" Westen asked.

"How do I know you'll get your people after I do it?" He countered, to which the treecko laughed.

"I guess you don't. Can I count on you to hold you end of our deal?"

"Only if you do the same." Eevee replied. "I don't wanna have to hurt you if I embarrass myself and you don't follow through on our deal."

"Well, despite my appearance, I keep the promises I make. If it'll make you all put even a little trust in me, I'll go out and get the guy to help us out. Unless you all have anything else you want to say, I won't be back in a little while." with that said, the green lizard walked off into the forest and gave one last look behind him before he took off in a run.

Hours had passed since Westen's departure. The afternoon was mostly uneventful for the brown fox, except for a tasty lunch and Mia's subtle, yet constant, questioning as to what exactly he promised to do for the trouble making treecko. He refused to tell her though, saying it wasn't something that she needed to know and that he'll take care of it when the time comes. She eventually stopped probbing him for answers and went about hunting more magikarp and collecting berries for dinner and their travels. Nina played with Perry and the twins for most of the afternoon, but went to rest in the sunlight for a while when she grew too tired to continue playing.

It was almost nightfall and neither eevee nor Mia had seen any sign of Westen returning anytime soon, but he wasn't the only one they noticed hadn't returned yet. Kai was still out there and they were starting to get a little worried. Eevee decided to go out and bring the blue pup back himself. He informed Nina that he was leaving to find Kai before putting his nose to work and following the faint scent of the pup that was still lingering in the air. He had to walk a bit slow to make sure he was going the right way. After all, it's not easy to follow a scent that's half a day old when you don't have a nose as strong as the more canine-like pokemon.

Eevee traveled for about thirty minutes before Kai's scent became strong enough to follow without needing to slow down. In just a few more minutes, the scent was strong enough for the brown fox to safely assume the pup was nearby.

"Kai! Kai, where'd you go?!" Eevee called out. There was no response. "Dammit, I know he's around here somewhere." he thought. After walking through a set of bushes, he found the little pup sitting at the edge of a pond. "There he is." It seemed like a peaceful place to just unwind and take a nap without worrying about getting disturbed. The trees overhead gave plenty of shade around and on the small body of water. The brown fox walked over to the riolu pup. "Hey, you heard me calling you?" Kai jumped and yelled in surprise, making Eevee jump as well.

"W-where'd you come from?!" he stammered as he was catching his breath.

"I called you just behind those trees just a second ago." Eevee replied.

"Oh, sorry..." Kai looked away with a slight blush on his face. "So, what's up?"

"You haven't been back all day and we were starting to worry about you." Kai looked up to the sky and realized how late in the day it was.

"Oh snap! I wasn't paying attention to the time!" he said with panic in his voice, too which eevee laughed.

"Don't worry about it. As long as you're not hurt, I'm sure Mia will forgive you for being a little late coming back. I'm pretty sure she will probably have dinner ready soon, so we better get moving." Kai nodded in agreement and followed the brown fox back to camp.

As they were walking together, eevee couldn't help but notice that the blue pup seemed a little upset about something. "Something wrong?" Kai looked over at eevee for a second before turning away and playing with his paws. He was struggling to find the right words to say what was on his mind, but couldn't quite find a more subtle way of putting it.

"Um... what do know about, uh... girls?" he said slightly embarrassed. Eevee was taken slightly aback by his odd question. He thought that the pup was a little young to be worrying about girls.

"Uh, not a whole lot." He answered truthfully. "Even though I've been friends with three of them for most of my life, I still don't know that much about them. Why do you wanna know about girls anyway? Did you meet one back there?"

"Y-yeah, s-she was really pretty." Kai answered as the red on his face deepened. "She was a mawile and I found her taking a bath in the pond after I finished training."

"Sounds like someone has a crush." Eevee teased. "Is that why you were staying out so late?" He nodded.

"But, it's not like I can get her like me back. She said she had a mate and I was too young for her."

"Oh, sorry to hear that."

"It's okay. She said I was cute though." he said a little grin.

"At least you can count on your looks to get you a girl." They both shared a good laugh and continued on their way to the others.

*****8*****

"Well guys, it's getting late. Let's call it a day and start set out again in the morning." Eric said as he looked around for a suitable place to make camp. They had left Oreburg city and were on their way to Jubalife City. Since he didn't have a bike with him, he has to go the long way around to Eterna City, instead of taking the shorter bike route. It would take another two hours for them to reach the city borders and he didn't want to travel at night, so he decided to stop here for the night. Besides that, he was getting a little winded from the walk and from the look on Aipom's face, she was more than tired.

Aipom callapsed on her back, completely exhausted from the days' walk. Evan bad long since given up on walking about two hours into it, being that he's still young and is not used to walking great distances. He was recalled into his ball, leaving Ember and Aipom to walk by Eric's side.

"What's wrong Aipom? You're not tired after a little walk, are ya?" Ember said teasingly. She wasn't the least bit tired, having been traveling with Akira, Eric's mom, collecting ribbons and badges from contests/gyms all over the world.

"Shut up." Aipom gasped out. "I didn't think... the next town... would be... so far..."

"You know, you could've gone inside your ball like Evan."

"No way! I'm not some weak little kid who can't take seven hours of walking."

"Are you calling my son weak?" Ember asked with her tails flaring about and her teeth bared. "Because if you are..." Aipom immediatly sat up looking acared.

"Nonono, I wasn't saying that! It was just a... figure of speach. I would never say something like that about him." she said in a panicky voice.

"Oh, well that's okay then. You should really watch what you say. Someone might get the wrong idea one of these days." Ember said cooly. Aipom calmed down now that the cream colored fox seemed to cool down, but she had a feeling that Ember was just messing with her. She never got mad if she made fun of Evan once in a while.

"Hey, girls! I found a good spot for us to rest for the night. Come on." Eric said through the bushes. Without another word, they followed him about ten yards off the trail to a small clearing in the middle of the forest. "Okay, first things first. We need a fire, so I need you two to go and get some dry twigs and branches while I set thing up here, okay?" Both Aipom and Ember nodded and set about looking for wood. Eric dropped his bag on the ground and took out everything he needed to make dinner. The only thing he was missing was water, so he grabbed three used empty plastic bottles from his bag and headed to the nearest river. Since he's been on this path once before he knew he didn't have to stray very far from camp, one of the other reasons he choose to stop here. He walked for a couple minutes before he heard the sound of rushing water and found what he was looking for. He filled each of the bottles to the top and sat on the rivers edge to take a few sips for himself.

While Eric sat there, he wondered about what was happening to eevee right now. If he was okay and if those thieves were doing anything that would hurt him. "I can't believe I let that happen." he thought to himself. "I wouldn't be able to forgive myself if something bad happens to him." He opened one of the water bottles and took a few sips from it to calm his nerves. Worrying about the brown fox was okay, but mopping wasn't going to make things easier. He knows that there's a chance for him to find eevee in Eterna City and that should be enough to keep his spirit up. He reached for Evan's ball and called out the red fox. Evan materialized beside Eric in a flash of light, still looking a little worn out from earlier.

"Want a drink buddy?" Eric asked as he presented the bottle he was drinking out of. The fox gave a happy yip and opened his mouth to recieve the bottle. Eric brought the mouth of the bottle to his maw and slowly poured the cold, refreshing liquid down the fox's throat. About halfway through, Evan snatched the bottle from Eric and finished the rest of it in one go. Once he was finished, he dropped the bottle on the ground and licked his lips. "Guess you were really thirsty, huh." Eric commented with a grin as he scratched behind the foxs' ear. Evan leaned into the scratching and sighed in contempt. "Let's get back to the others. I'm sure they're waiting for me to come back." He refilled the empty bottle and made his way back to the campsite with the young fox beside him. Eric saw an orange light in the distance and assumed that Aipom and Ember had returned and started the fire already.

"What do you think's in Eterna City that's got him all happy today. Is eevee there?" Aipom asked.

"Most likely. The police woman said that there's a good chance that the thieves who took him are there." Ember replied. She and Aipom were sitting around the campfire waiting for Eric to return so they could eat. They haven't been waiting long, but it was long enough for them to wonder where their trainer had gone to.

"She did? When did she say that?"

"Oh, you probably didn't hear because your hearing isn't as good as mine. She said it when she grabbed Eric's shirt. Apparently, she didn't want any of the other officers to hear her telling him confidencial information"

"That's why she did that? So, we might be able to save him or something if he's there?" Aipom asked excitedly.

"Maybe. If we do, you can rub it in his face about how he was saved by a couple of girls and a child." Ember said with a grin.

"That's gonna be so awesome! I can't wait to see him now!" The cream colored fox wasn't sure if it was the thought of seeing her friend again or wanting to tease him that made the purple monkey excited, but it was a nice change of pace from that morning.

"I see you two are having fun without us. Ready to eat?" Both of them turned to see Eric and Evan emerge from behind the trees. Evan ran ahead and nuzzled his mothers leg. She returned the affection by licking the top of his head.

"It's about time you came back. Where the heck do you go?" Aipom asked.

"Don't worry, I just went to get some water so none of us chokes on dinner." he replied. He had assumed she asked where he was and was relieved to see that he was right because she seemed to have dropped the subject. "Anyway, let's get dinner started. I'm sure you all are as hungry as I am." With that said, Eric got their bowls and filled them with their own pokéchow. Ember's was hot and spicy, Aipom's was sweet, and Evan's was beef flavored. Eric just had a turkey sandwich and some chips. It wasn't much, but it was better than nothing.

*****8*****

After everyone was done eating, Eric took the bowls to the river to give them a quick wash and put them away in his bag.

"Alright, does anyone want to sleep in their ball tonight?" he asked as he rolled out his sleeping bag. Everyone shook their heads. "Okay, we're gonna be getting up early so make sure you get enough sleep. We're gonna make a stop at Jubalife and continue as soon as I have everything I need. You can decide if you want breakfast when we wake up or once we get to town." Everyone nodded at his instructions. He took off his shirt and set it aside before getting in his sleeping bag. Ember lay next to his head, with Evan curled up next to her. Aipom took to the trees and laid on a branch. Everyone exchanged "good nights" and drifted off to sleep.

Fun fact: There's a reason that the treecko's name is Westen. The fact that a treecko is in this story is because my nephew asked for it. He's the first one I've told that I was writting this and he wanted to be in it too after I had gotten this far into it. So I asked him what he wanted to be and he said a treecko. I asked for a name and he said Westen. Personally, I didn't really like the name too much because I think he just started watching the first season of Burn Notice, but it sort of grew on me over time. His character was a combination of both of us, so if you like Westan so far, I'll tell him when I see him again.
