#20 of Pokemon - To Catch Them All

Leo explores Violet City, the Sprout Tower and challenges Falkner

As I looked around Violet City I was intrigued by the lovely design of the buildings, even the Pokemon centre and the Pokemart had been painted to meld with the cities design. I walked south of the city and found myself on Route 32 which was quite large and bound to have some wild Pokemon I hadn't yet caught. Exploring through the grass I came across a Mareep that was eating some grass. "Come out Spinarak!" Spinarak appeared silently observing the eating Mareep. "Use String Shot and trap Mareep!" Mareep was shocked and stunned when the String Shot trapped it, making escape impossible. However, this Mareep wasn't shy like other Mareep. It was confident and had an attitude to match.

"Use Scary Face!" Spinarak darted forward as quick as he could, firing a String Shot at a branch above Mareep before descending and appearing right in front of Mareep scaring the sheep but eventually Mareep regained his control and tried to fight back, firing a Thunder Shock at Spinarak. "Dodge that, then use Poison Sting!" Thanks to his size, Spinarak was rather nimble and as such avoided the Thunder Shock before firing back with rapid fire Poison Stings which clearly weakened the Mareep. I was about to throw a Pokeball when Mareep forcible broke the String Shot before using Tackle rapidly running at Spinarak who remained unfazed.

"Use Poison Sting once more!" Again Spinarak used Poison Sting which proved to be enough to stop the advancing Mareep and allowing me to throw a Pokeball and I watched as the ball shook once, twice, three times before the capture was confirmed. "Mareep has been registered to your Pokedex. Mareep the Wool Pokemon a Electric Type. Its fluffy coat doubles in size when static electricity builds up. Touching it can be shocking." At that I healed Mareep and begrudgingly Mareep accepted my assistance. For a while me and Mareep battled together, trying to understand one another. My battle style was more cautious and power mixed into one. However, Mareep preferred full offense which is what caused Mareep to be defeated.

As such, with a trainer, Mareep learned what he was missing and working with Leo allowed him to grow stronger as a Pokemon. While we explored the route we next came across a flying Hoppip which travelled around using the wind. "Mareep use Thunder Shock!" Mareep landed a powerful attack which knocked Hoppip out of the sky. Hoppip glided back into the air and focused in on Mareep. Hoppip used the wind and looked like it was using Tackle but Mareep countered using a second Thunder Shock finishing the battle.

I threw a Pokeball and watched as it shook once, twice, three times before the capture was confirmed. "Hoppip has been registered to your Pokedex. Hoppip the Cottonweed Pokemon a Grass and Flying Type. They are blown adrift by winds. It is said that when Hoppip gather in fields and mountains, spring is on the way." Hoppip was a skittish Pokemon but eventually he overcame that and showed me a more curious side as he observed me. Hoppip knew the moves, Absorb, Synthesis, Tackle and surprisingly knew Fairy Wind.

I decided to test Hoppip's strength against the final Pokemon that I hadn't yet caught on Route 32 that being Wooper a Water and Ground Type meaning its only weakness was Grass Type. Eventually we came across a Wooper and Hoppip was eager to show his trainer just how powerful he was. "Hoppip use Absorb!" Hoppip floated using the wind and began absorbing Wooper's energy weakening him greatly with the super effective move.

Wooper was greatly weakened by the Absorb and I threw a Pokeball and watched as it shook once, twice, three times before the capture was confirmed. "Wooper has been registered to your Pokedex. Wooper the Water Fish Pokemon a Water and Ground Type. When the temperature cools in the evening, they emerge from the water to seek food along the shore."

Wooper was a very shy charismatic Pokemon and got along well with me. Wooper was good at battling as well and rather enjoyed battling alongside a trainer that had proven themselves to be rather strong in battle. After catching the new Pokemon here I headed back to Violet City and decided to heal my Pokemon before further exploring the city in full and seeing if there was anything to do before challenging the gym.

Heading north I saw a looming tower enveloping the city itself, heading to the tower I learned it was the Bellsprout Tower and had some importance here. Upon entering a elderly fellow approached me, he encouraged me to climb to the very top and grow stronger doing so. I accepted the challenge knowing it would help my current Pokemon grow even stronger in preparation for the gym battle.

Ascending the first flight of stairs I continued onward, on the first floor I was challenged by a sage who sent out a Bellsprout which seemed to be the towers mascot. I sent out my Hoothoot and had Hoothoot use a Peck defeating Bellsprout. A second Bellsprout was sent out and I sent out my Mareep and had Mareep use a few Tackles to defeat Bellsprout while avoiding Vine Whip. This was repeated with a third Bellsprout.

Heading down a level another sage challenged me with three Bellsprout and I had Spinarak overwhelm the Grass Types with his Poison Sting winning the battle. Heading up another level another sage with three Bellsprout awaited me and as such I had Sentret come out for the first Bellsprout and win with Quick Attack. The next two were dealt by Ledyba who used Swift and Tackle to defeat Bellsprout.

Heading up another level I was challenged by a sage who sent out just the one Bellsprout. I sent out my Hoppip to have a go at battling the Bellsprout. A few Fairy Winds allowed Hoppip to defeat Bellsprout while dodging Vine Whips here and there. Continuing forward a second sage challenged me with a Bellsprout and I had my Hoothoot come out and use Peck once more defeating Bellsprout.

A third sage then challenged me with a Bellsprout and I sent out my Spinarak who won using Poison Sting but the second Pokemon wasn't a Bellsprout it was a Hoothoot and I think my Pokemon were relieved at that since battling Bellsprout for them had become rather disappointing as they wanted something new and challenging. Still Mareep used Thunder Shock defeating Hoothoot with the super effective move.

Once I reached the very top floor I was challenged by the elder sage the strongest trainer here that wanted to see the bond between trainer and Pokemon and I was more than happy to show him the bond we shared. His first Pokemon was a Hoothoot and I sent out Ledyba and used repeated Swifts to defeat Bellsprout. A second Bellsprout was dealt with by my Spinarak whose Poison Sting was super effective. The final Pokemon sent out was a Hoothoot and I substituted for my Mareep and had Mareep unleash Thunder Shock defeating Hoothoot.

After winning the battle the elder sage congratulated me on winning and complimented my strength he continued by suggesting that I was more than ready to challenge the gym leader Falkner. I was also prepared but did decided to return south and do some last minute training to ensure that I was properly prepared for the battle. I knew I'd be relying upon Mareep mostly since Electric moves were super effective against Flying Types.

While training against the multitude of Pokemon Mareep actually began glowing signalling his evolution which was surprisingly early but perhaps the battles against the Bellsprout earlier had increased his level and strength more than previously anticipated. "Flaaffy has been registered to your Pokedex. Flaaffy the Wool Pokemon a Electric Type. If its coat becomes fully charged with electricity, its tail lights up. Flaaffy can fire hair that zaps on impact."

Flaaffy immediately nuzzled me and showed an increase in physical strength almost nudging me to the ground in his enthusiasm of becoming stronger for me. As a result of his evolution Flaaffy had even learned some new moves, his current moves being. Charge, Thunder Shock, Thunder Wave and Cotton Spore. Next to do some training was my Sentret who had grown more confident with each and every battle. So I wasn't surprised when Sentret also began evolving too.

"Furret has been registered to your Pokedex. Furret the Long Body Pokemon a Normal Type. The mother puts its offspring to sleep by curling up around them. It corners foes with speed." I noticed the immediate increase in speed and while it may not have matched some of my Pokemon in Kanto for being one of my newest in Johto it was very impressive. Furret was definitely happy to have grown more powerful and desired to pay that thanks back by winning every battle he could for his beloved trainer.

Ledyba and Spinarak got along better than I had assumed they would based on the whole predator and prey complex. In the wild I had seen Spinarak webs covered in numerous bug and small Flying Type Pokemon however, now that they were under the ownership of a trainer and were provided with consistent food. There was no need for predation among the two and as such the two good along remarkably well. Ledyba was definitely the more skittish and nervous one of the two. While Spinarak displayed curiosity by clambering over everything he could to investigate.

Hoppip was much like Ledyba was, skittish but also inherited some confidence from Furret. Hoppip was getting stronger day by day as well, not quite reaching evolution as of yet but was getting close I could feel it. Wooper was much of the same, but was a standoffish Pokemon, that's not too say Wooper didn't get along with me or the other Pokemon, not he did. However, Wooper was similar to my previous Slowpoke taking everything in his stride.

Finally there was Hoothoot who was probably one of the strongest thanks to the amount of battling he had done against the Bellsprout in the tower but also against the Bellsprout that lived here. Hoothoot was a quiet Pokemon but very patient as well. Hoothoot liked to perch on my shoulder like many previous Flying Types I had caught while travelling through Kanto before.

With all the necessary training completed I felt prepared for the gym battle and it seemed as though the Pokemon had decided amongst themselves who would be battling and it was a given that Flaaffy would battle because of type advantages. The second I had chosen was Furret due to his speed that would be an advantage for sure against Flying Types.

I had also done some brief research on the gym leader Falkner and new that he was obviously an expert in Flying Types but he wouldn't be as easy as you might think however I felt like victory wouldn't be too difficult because of previous experience I had. Returning to the centre for a final heal I then headed to the gym and noticed how it definitely showed a preference for Flying Types.

Eventually I came across Falkner the gym leader and he was more than happy to accept my battle challenge. When we arrived at the field the referee announced the rules. "This battle will be two on two. When one sides Pokemon are all unable to battle, the opposing trainer will be declared the winner. Trainers please send out your Pokemon."

I decided to start off with Furret meanwhile Falkner started off with Pidgey. "Battle begin!" As soon as the referee announced the beginning Falkner started. "Pidgey take to the air." Pidgey took off and was safe in the air. "Furret wait for them to make the first move." Furret nodded observing Pidgey carefully understanding that he might be at a slight disadvantage compared to a Flying Type.

"Pidgey dive down and use Sand Attack!" Pidgey dove down and that was our chance to land a blow before they could directly cause us to miss. "Furret don't let them, use Quick Attack!" Furret's Quick Attack struck first striking Pidgey to the ground doing some decent damage. Pidgey struggled to stand back up but in that moment we saw an opening to finish the battle before it could continue on longer. "Furret strike with Fury Swipes." Falkner knew his only chance was to have Pidgey get into the air and out of range.

"Pidgey take off!" Pidgey attempted to fly but the timing was off and he was struck by Fury Swipes. The move finished off the exhausted Pidgey and the referee new it. "Pidgey is unable to battle, the winner is Furret." I thanked Furret as Falkner returned his Pidgey thanking if for its hard work. Falkner smiled before sending out his Pidgeotto that I could tell was much stronger than his previous Pidgey.

"Return for now Furret you battled well." I returned Furret knowing that this Pidgeotto would be tougher than I had first thought. "Flaaffy I need your help!" Flaaffy appeared sparking with electricity showing of impressive power. Pidgeotto didn't back down and neither did Falkner so the battle continued. "Flaaffy Thunder Shock!" Flaaffy unleashed a Thunder Shock, but Pidgeotto dodged expertly by ascending.

"Another Thunder Shock!" Pidgeotto continued dodging the attacks, before one eventually struck Pidgeotto causing some serious damage. "Pidgeotto descend and use Roost!" Pidgeotto descended to the ground and began healing using Roost. Pidgeotto now had effectively lost the Flying Type but it made him even more susceptible now.

"Flaaffy use Thunder Wave and paralyse Pidgeotto!" Flaaffy unleashed a light shock that instantly paralysed Pidgeotto making it incapable of moving as fast. However, Pidgeotto was now completely healed and showed his impressive vigour glaring threateningly at Flaaffy who responded in kind. "Once more Thunder Shock!" The paralysis helped when Pidgeotto attempted to fly away however, the paralysis kicked in and prevented Pidgeotto from dodging allowing Flaaffy to win the battle with a super effective move.

"Pidgeotto is unable to battle and that means the winner of this battle is Leo from Viridian City." The referee declared as Falkner returned his Pidgeotto thanking him for such a good battle. Meanwhile my Flaaffy was happy as anything that he had proven himself to his beloved trainer. Falkner approached smiling as he gave me the badge. "Congratulations, your Pokemon worked tirelessly to give you the win, I see you going far in life that's for sure. This here is your reward the Zephyr Badge you've earned it."

I thanked Falkner extensively before placing my badge in my badge case before leaving not before thanking Falkner once more. As I left the gym and was about to return to the Pokemon centre I received a call on my Rotom Phone. "You have a call from Professor Elm!" I picked up and Professor Elm spoke. "Leo, we've discovered something, it's about the egg that you got from Mr Pokemon. I can't go into the specifics at the moment however, I would like you to take care of the egg while travelling Johto. I'm aware that your in Violet City and so my assistant is already at the Pokemart there, he'll hand the egg over to you. Thanks again for your assistance and I wish you good luck on your journey."

I didn't have a chance to even speak my thanks but he seemed extremely excited and so I decided to let him off this time. I headed over to the Pokemon centre and had my Pokemon healed up and then headed over to the Pokemart as well. Luckily there was only one person who resembled a lab assistant and so I approached them. "You must be Leo from Viridian City correct?" The lab assistant asked me and I nodded. "Here this is the egg, the professor would like you to take care off while your travelling." I accepted the egg and observed it wondering what the Pokemon inside was going to be. I hoped I would help it grow into a healthy and happy Pokemon.

At that I decided to make my way to the next gym which was located in Azalea Town
