Home Sweet Farm Chapter 9 That night they all settled down to watch TV when the doorbell rang. "I'll get it." said Katie as she got up and walked to the door. When she opened the door a man in a black cloak and a black suit hat walked in. "Are you the owner of this establishment?" he asked. She nodded. "Yes." He handed her a sheet of paper just like he tried to do with Kevin. "You have been holding back on paying your property tax and none of your employees have paid there renters fee, in all you owe us around nine-hundred and fifty six dollars, unless you have that money by tomorrow afternoon you and your friends will have to find another place to live." Her heart sank right then and there. "Who signed the sheet saying you could do this." He pointed to Kevin who was standing right next to her. "Wait what! No I didn't you tried but I didn't sign!" He held up a sheet of paper, the same sheet he had presented to him earlier today and at the bottom was his signature. "It can't be.." He rolled up the sheet and stuffed it back into his pocket. "We will be by tomorrow afternoon to make sure you are all ready." "Oh yeah kid you dropped your wallet." he said throwing the wallet to Kevin. He then put up the papers and walked out the door. He knew Katie was upset so he tried to calm her down. "Katie...its going to be ok." he said putting his hand on her shoulder. He was expecting her to look up but all she did was shrug his hand off and slap him right across the left side of his face. "Damn what was that about!" When she raised her eyes he could see tears running down her face. "How could you do this to us!" she yelled. "I didn't do anything." he said softly. "Liar you signed those papers and now were going to have to move, all my parents work for nothing!" As he got up she walked towards him again and raised her hand but Mallory and Jessica grabbed it before she could hit him again. "I promise you I signed nothing." She struggled against Mallory and Jessica to try and get past them. "You can forget about ever working with us ever again your fired!" His heart crumbled to pieces when she said that. "Ok....fine I'll leave but just remember this any bond that we had is now gone." he said as he walked to his room to start packing up all his stuff. They finally let go of her and she stormed off into the kitchen. Everything had just come tumbling down right on top of him in only a matter of a day. After he packed up everything he went into Katie's room and put a envelope on her side desk. When he walked back into his room he heard a familiar voice come from behind him. "Are you really leaving?" When he turned around he saw Sarah with a sad look on her face. All he could do was nod. "Please don't we'll miss you." All he did was exhale and look at her. "I have no choice I have to besides Katie doesn't want me here anymore." She shook her head with a few tears splashing to the floor. "No that's not true she's just.." But the only thing she got from him this time was a kiss to the forehead. "It's funny out of all the girls here I consider you to be like a little sister of mine." Before she could respond he was gone. Everyone except for Katie watched him walk out of the building and disappear into the night. Sarah was in his room sitting on his bed and with tears running down her face. That's thing he had told her before he left echoed through out her mind. Then she remembered something, he had set something on her desk. She walked across the hall and opened the door to Katie's room. She rushed over to the desk and grabbed the envelope and ripped it open. They were all sitting on the couch watching TV except for Katie who was looking at some of the pictures on the shelf next to the kitchen door when they heard footstep thrash on the ground. Sarah appeared from the hall way and without warning she slapped Katie on the right side of her face. "Sarah!" Jessica yelled. She was breathing heavily like she was really pissed off. "Bitch how could you do that to him!" she yelled. "Do you know what you did to him!" She got up but she didn't slap back she just looked at her. Sarah was not usually the violent type but she had just attacked her friend. "He betrayed us." is all she could get out. "Your wrong." she said pulling out the envelope. "This is what he did for us." Katie swiped it from her and pulled out what looked like a letter. It read: Dear Katie; I am sorry for any grief I have given you since I have been here, I know you are upset and you want me gone but don't worry you won't ever see me ever again but I thought I should help you guys out. Good luck with the farm. Sincerely, Kevin And from the envelope dropped another piece of parchment. She picked it up and once she saw what it was her heart sank it was a check for nine-hundred and ninety dollars just the amount they needed to stay.. She gripped the letter and ran towards the door. Tears were streaming down her face as she ran but when she got outside she couldn't see anything. What had she done.
