Through a glass darkly

It's taking much longer than I expected to get the time and energy up to write the next chapters...damned accounting class...so I'm writing this teaser to tide yall over till then.

Davis sits in his chair, looking at the view screen, the specks streakin by in warp speed the only thing to be seen, like some screen saver on a computer back home. He sighs and looks over at Saphyra. She gives him a smile and squeezes his hand gently. Davis then looks around the bridge, his crew performing their tasks marvelously. The ship was set to rights, as was the fleet of eighteen ships around them. They had risen to this occassion, as every occassion before it, with flying colors and admirable courage...but would it be enough.

"We have it in visual range now sir." His tactical officer says.

"Shields up, red alert!" Davis immediately calls out. The lights dim and the siren flares, the typical red alert everyone had grown up seeing on television has become oh so real. He feels a sense of unreality right now. "Put it on screen." He orders. The screen flashes on, the unmistakable image in the middle sending a chill up his spine and settling fear in his stomach. "Instruct the fleet, prepare to attack..."

"We are the Borg..."

With a jolt Davis sits upright in his bed, momentum almost carrying him out of bed. Saphyra hardly stirs beside him as he gets up and goes to the sink in the bathroom. He fills the basin with cold water then dunks his face into it for a second, letting the cool water snap him back to reality. "Only a dream..." He tells himself. "...this was only a dream." He looks at his reflection in the iror.

"But it's the third time you've had it." The face in the mirror tells him right back.
