#30 of Deviant Delights: Vol. I

Dylann reveals his new king and husband to the rest of his realm. Lucian reveals his contract with Davin and shares his plans for his Herald's future.

"Well, Dylann... I am happy for you, though I don't really get why you want me here after the last time," Lucian said. The water around them caused steam to rise from his nostrils, though it did nothing to obscure his vision. Out of respect, and because he was a guest, he had shrunk himself down to the same height as the sea-goat; any lower, and it would imply he served him.

"I still wish you'd give swimming a try, but it's good to see you," Dylann said, smiling happily. "Ah... but who did you bring with you? I don't recognize them."

"Zagan, my new Herald. Much as Seth there is your new Second, I see..." Lucian said, cocking his brow at the merwolf floating up to them. "Did you think I would come without an attendant seeing to my own needs?"

"No, not really," Dylann chuckled. "Who better than your own to serve you? Still, I must admit you have outdone yourself this time. What an interesting display..."

"If I am the sun of my realm, he is the moon and the stars," Lucian proudly said, not caring who heard. "But enough; this is your day. I never thought I'd see you share your power with another. Who is the king-to-be?"

"Just because you're Pride, it doesn't mean you get insider information. You will find out when everyone else does," Dylann said, and Lucian simply nodded. He had to respect that. He would do much the same himself, were he in his... well, scales he supposed. "But it is an honor for you to attend."

"Well, I do sometimes forget how magnificent this palace can be, even with how minimalist you are with the decor," Pride replied, satisfied with the praise. "And what about you, Seth? Do I need to come rescue you again?"

"I feel like it'd be more taking me as your own than 'rescuing' me," Seth chuckled, shaking his head. "But no. I'm here willingly. I can come and go as I please, regardless. I'm not trapped here just because I accepted a job from Temperance. Also, ah... I sort of flipped my aspect to his recently. It just made sense to become his Second."

"So long as you're here of your own will, I don't think Liam can complain. I assume he knows?"

"Of course. It'd be rude not to tell him."

"Then there's no problem, is there?" Lucian said, thoughtful as Zagan brought him a goblet of wine. The entire audience chamber was buzzing with conversation, though he smiled as he heard his own name come up more often than not. "You are a daemon now. Who you serve is none of my concern, so long as you do not break the rules."

"I'm still grateful for what you've done for me, Lucian. I wouldn't be here without your help becoming a daemon. But ah, I need to go check on the preparations now," Seth said, turning to Dylann. "I'll see you during the ceremony, my liege."

"As will I," Dylann said, smiling just a bit too much. "Anyway, Lucian... how is Jared?"

"Answer him," Lucian ordered, snapping his fingers loudly even in the water. "How was he?"

"Unchanged when I last saw him, Elder Temperance," Zagan said, a tinge of sadness in his voice despite the prideful demeanor. "Though he has now been moved to a room that will allow for most visitors. They do not know when he will wake, if ever. They are still not sure why he is comatose. Of course, we know, but we cannot just tell them... can we?"

"No, best they're left in the dark," Lucian sighed. "To think I'd have to deal with Odin again... but you have your answer, Dylann. Now you know as much as the rest of us do."

"Why was Zagan visiting Jared if normal visitors couldn't get in?"

"You know my connections, Dylann. And my motives. Who better than my personal guard to watch over him?"

"Well, I still feel like you're hiding something, but I won't pry," Dylann said, shrugging as he tapped his trident against his open palm. "You have your reasons, and it is rude of me to dig into your personal business. Forgive me."

"I see nothing to forgive this time," Lucian said, shrugging. "I would ask the same questions, were I you. But what about those two?"

"Zale and Mark? They're here for the ceremony but not of my realm," Dylann replied. "Don't worry. I have a contract to return them this time. Would you like to see it?"

"No need. I think you learned your lesson the last time, and besides... they were brought by invitation, no doubt. It would be their fault this time if they ended up staying. But do you really want to discuss business on today of all days? Surely it can wait until after the ceremony."

"You're right," Dylann laughed, shaking his head. "I suppose it's still so... surreal, right now. We both know this is merely a formality, but I still can't help but feel nervous all over again."

"What does he mean, Master Lucian?" Zagan asked, before Pride shot him a glare.

"It is not your business to know. Forget what you just heard, and do not ask again."

"Forgive me, my lord," Zagan said, irritated to have been put into his place, yet loyal enough to grit his teeth and bear it. "I should not have dishonored you by speaking out so."

"Forgiven, but do not let it happen again," Lucian said, satisfied.

"You don't need to be so harsh, Lucian," Dylann said, sighing.

"I am being lenient, if anything. But I will not have a chatty little gossip as my Herald. If he must know something, I will tell it to him myself. Is that clear, Zagan?"

"It is as clear as a sunny day," Zagan said, bowing to both elders. "Shall I fetch more wine for my lord?"

"No, I have had my fill," Lucian said, draining the last of his drink. "Here, return this to where it belongs. We are guests, and it would be rude to leave such things wherever we please."

"I shall do so at once," Zagan said, taking the goblet and swimming away. While he did not possess the tailfin of a merfolk, his powerful webbed feet and hands propelled him as easily. His wings had been transformed into a dorsal fin, but that was as aquatic as Lucian was willing to make him. He had to admit though, the display was stunning all the same. The elder himself, however, was unwilling to change any part of his own body simply because of a little water. It also made him rather unique in this realm; a creature of land and air moving through the ocean as easily as a fish.

"Am I the only elder to attend, Dylann?" Lucian asked once they were somewhat alone.

"Yes, though not for lack of effort. Maeryn's decided he needs to keep an eye on Jared's progress, though I think he does it so Liam doesn't run himself ragged. Speaking of Lust, he is busy with 'affairs of his realm', whatever that means. Wrath and Gluttony still don't trust me not to try to turn or weaken them somehow, though they did send a nice fruit basket or two. Which was nice, though I had to make sure the grapes wouldn't fatten up my servants or myself. Greed happens to be abroad for an important business deal of his, and the rest of the Unity has declined to attend. I don't blame them, but I had hoped they would at least be happy for me just this once."

"Their loss," Lucian said, keeping his anger in check. It would be foolish to lose his temper in front of so many others. "Liam has been standoffish with me lately as well, so do not think it is because of you that he refuses to attend. I have no doubt he is truly busy working something out, whether for his realm or himself. Remember, he is still new to his role. If he cannot stand on his own, what sort of elder would he be? Though if he asks for my help, I will provide it. He need only say the word."

"That's comforting to hear, whatever your intentions," Dylann replied. "Seth has not yet told me either; while he's not hiding it, he simply asked me not to ask him again until he was ready to discuss it. It's good to know it's not because of my aspect, however. Not to mention the last time Liam was here, we put him in a giant glass of rum."

"I still think that was the best contest we've had in some time. Even if my champion had lost, I would have been honored to have had the opportunity."

"...How is Davin, anyway? If you don't mind me asking?" Dylann asked, concern in his eyes. "He can't be taking things well right now if he's working for your realm."

"He is well, in a way," Lucian said, looking over to Zagan. "He was alone in that hospital lobby. He told me he felt like he was losing his mind. Not just with grief for Jared, either; I suspect he has been under the same stresses that Liam will not elaborate on. Still, I will not order him to tell me."

"Not like he'd listen to you, unless he signed a contract to..." Dylann said, his voice trailing off. Looking over at Zagan talking to one of his servants, he turned back to Lucian with a look of astonishment. "Lucian. You didn't..."

"I did. The contract is available for you to see, if you wish it. Consider it a 'present' for your ceremony. But his aspect remains unchanged, I assure you. He is not a true Pride daemon, though he has put many of mine to shame already. Perhaps I have grown soft..."

"I'll take a look afterwards," Dylann said, a little relieved. "Not that I can do much to change the outcome, but I assume it's temporary?"

"Of course. I like Davin, remember? But he chose to leave most of the terms up to me; that should clue you in to how he was feeling. What he still feels, deep down inside. But enough of this. You have more important matters to be concerned with, and I do not wish to betray his confidence in me. I only tell you this much because he was once yours, and I trust you not to spread word of this."

"I will tell Seth, but no others," Dylann said, surprising Lucian.

"Not even your betrothed? Hm. Now I truly wish to see who this mystery man is," Lucian chuckled. "But I will flay Seth alive if he spreads rumors."

"You won't, and he won't. But I think they're ready for me up there," Dylann said, changing the subject as he looked toward the twin thrones made of aquamarine. "If you'll excuse me..."

"Go on. Don't leave us all in suspense now," Lucian said, smiling warmly at him. Despite what he was and who, he was happy for Temperance. Still, he had to wonder what kind of person could woo such a powerful daemon. Most likely another daemon, if he was truly sharing his power, but who? He couldn't see any of the mortals being capable of it, and yet Temperance had merged with Zale for a while at one point. His close companion, hm? Yes, a likely suspect; it would be easy to hide any changes from Lucian in this realm, especially a recent turning of a mortal to a daemon. Yet he could see Zale only had eyes for the other one, Mark. Whatever might be between Zale and Dylann, he couldn't see it being more intense than the occasional fling like what he had with Davin. Lust, maybe adoration and devotion, but not a pure love. He figured Seth could be counted out, despite being his Second. While Zagan's gaze was more prideful due to his employment conditions, he had the same look of devotion that Seth showed toward Dylann. It wasn't anything out of the ordinary, especially considering the young daemon had just flipped Temperance. It was starting to bother him that he couldn't figure out who it might be however, and he had thought he had a good handle on people for the most part. How else could he have enough dirt on the entire city's police force, and contracts with nearly half of them? Though, Maeryn had clued him in from time to time... but he had his fingers in just about every pie these days.

But Maeryn could afford to keep his pulse on the present just as Lucian used the past to his advantage... it wouldn't be the first time someone had made a deal with the devil. Two steps to the left, and he was there; Lucian just preferred suits and handshakes these days. Mortals were more willing to sign contracts with someone who could put them at ease, even if in their hearts they knew the truth.

"Reminiscing, sir?" Zagan asked, smiling as he stood by his side.

"...Hm, somewhat," Lucian said, allowing the question. "But hush; it looks like they're starting."

*******

Seth was nervous, despite the constant thrum of power he could feel flowing around him. It had been hell trying to keep it a secret; constant vigilance as he actively avoided magic and letting his mind wander over the realm and its inhabitants... those who were of Temperance, at least. Keeping his form as the docile Second was easy to maintain, yet he felt he deserved so much more now. But that was dangerous thinking. That was the way of Pride. So it had been good practice to be his humbler self for a while longer.

This ceremony was his 'official' coronation, though it was just simple pomp and circumstance for the masses. He was to the right of Dylann, who had swam over to join them in front of his own throne. On Dylann's left were Zale and Mark, who now possessed symbols of their temporary authority... yet they were symbols they had once worn before. Even now Seth could feel their energy mixing with that of the realm as their humility and subservience emerged once more. And it was so much more than that, from everyone... he thought he could feel energy before, but this was...

"Are you ready?" Dylann quietly asked, so that only they could hear.

"Always," Seth replied. Smiling, he turned back to see Lucian was watched them all with equal interest... he really hadn't figured it out yet, had he? Yet he didn't find any real pleasure in that. Pride had been his sponsor and temporary mentor. For whatever else he was, he seemed a good man in Seth's eyes. Haughty, prideful... but good. Though it was foolish to try to assign morality to a daemon, he knew. He instead focused on the ceremony rather than Lucian's attention.

Dylann had turned to make sure the other two were ready, before he turned to face the crowd. A hush fell over those gathered; they knew he was about to speak, though out of courtesy to all guests not of the realm he politely cleared his throat.

"Loyal subjects. Friends. Esteemed guests... I've gathered you all here today to witness the coronation of a new king. Not one to replace me, but one to rule by my side... as you have no doubt suspected by now. It seems only yesterday we were celebrating the appointment of my Second, and now we have yet another grand celebration to partake in. There have been rumors, though many of you actively discouraged it, for which I thank you. Many are baseless and the work of fiction of course, but there has been one that has caught my attention; it says I have fallen in love. Well, I wonder if that one is true, hm?"

A laugh rippled through the crowd, before Dylann held up a hand for silence once more. Seth knew Temperance didn't joke too often when within his realm, so it was an extra delight to see everyone so happy for him. Even Lucian cracked a genuine smile before he hid it with his usual smug grin.

"Well, I tell you that it is true, as you can no doubt plainly see. For some time now, I have had my eyes on another... though I had thought him too good for me. He served me faithfully, never once complaining... yet I should have heard the complaints of his heart more clearly. I was so lost in my own troubles that I could not sense his. Until one day, one beautiful day when he said the words I want to hear for the rest of eternity: I love you."

Seth tried not to tear up or get emotional, even though he really wanted to. He could see others crying already in the crowd, though they laughed or smiled despite it all.

"I was surprised, yes. But what else could I have done but to reciprocate such a heartfelt confession? It was the confession I had wanted to make to him many years ago, but had been too afraid to consider saying. Of course, back in those days I had constructed a wall around my heart. One that I have since torn down since spending more time living than working in the mortal realms beyond ours. Perhaps I was even conceited? Who can know, when even I am not certain? How could we have known what the other felt, buried in the burdens we occupied our time with? None of that mattered in that moment, for I had made the decision right then and there to ask for his hand and share in my power. To become a true king of this realm."

"Who is this mysterious suitor who has captivated you so, Dylann?" Lucian boomed, smiling even as a dread hush filled the room. Instead of a scowl, the sea-goat laughed. He had been counting on such a question from Lucian.

"He is among us even now," Dylann said, causing everyone to look around at each other. "You have seen him many times, on many occasions... especially for those of you old enough to remember when he first came here. You may have spoken with him. You may have dined with him. The only thing you can truly know is that he is a daemon, for only a daemon can share in the power of my realm in such a way. So where is he, you ask? If it is so obvious, then who can it be?"

"If such a daemon exists, I would offer him the secret wisdom," Mark said, holding a small orb that glowed as he floated slowly forward to display it.

"If such a daemon exists, I would offer him the strength of legions," Zale said, holding a harpoon in his hands as he, too, floated forward. The aquamarine weapon was ornate in its design even by Temperance's standards, though there was a hollow space that made it seem incomplete.

"If such a daemon exists," Seth began, holding a simple scroll with the royal seal upon it, "I would offer him the knowledge of scholars."

"Then present this daemon, if he truly exists," Lucian said, clearly amused. He was always one for pomp and circumstance, and Seth could tell he was enjoying himself. "Or shall we be left in suspense for all eternity?"

"He is by my side, even now," Dylann said, taking the scroll from Seth. "Ortun of Temperance, present yourself."

Seth was aware of every eye upon him now as he floated past Dylann to the center of the podium. Turning to the crowd, he took a few calming breaths before opening his eyes and smiling.

"I know, I was just as surpised as you were," Seth said, his voice carrying with his power; yet they would think it was Dylann who did it, save for Lucian whose eyes boggled at the revelation. "As some of you may remember, either from your own memory or from those of stories told within your families, I first came to this realm as a mortal being. As Pride himself could attest to, if he were not struck speechless right now. But I do not mock him, for without Pride I would not have become the daemon I am today. Quite literally, actually. He was my sponsor and, I hope, will still be my mentor in the days to come. Who better to test Temperance than Pride? But I was transformed into a Lust daemon, due to my strong desire both for this form and for the flesh. But the flesh can only satisfy for so long before the heart aches. It couldn't last. Somehow, one way or another, I found my way back here and was appointed as your lord's Second, though not before I had confessed my love to him just hours prior within the garden where we had shared our first dance listening to our favorite song. I always buried myself in work when I was among you as a mortal, and when I was taken back to Earth - and rightfully so, before any of you may judge - I buried myself in alcohol, cigarettes, and sex. But that kiss in the garden changed me... no. I began to change even before that, but that kiss sealed it. I was of Temperance at that moment. I finally knew what I had been missing from my life. It was you, Dylann."

Waiting for Dylann to come to him, he held the scroll out in front of him. Smiling, he looked directly into his eyes before speaking once more.

"You are my heart, Ortun. But in front of these assembled witnesses, I must ask once more: will you rule by my side? Will you be my king?"

"I will," Seth said, smiling. "But not for your power. Not for your wisdom, or strength, or even knowledge. I say yes because I am in love with you, and have been for a long time now. Your love is all I want in return."

"Yet, you will receive my knowledge. That you may know those of this realm and beyond," Dylann said, allowing Seth to take the scroll and press it to his head. It became a bright and glowing orb of violet as it slowly floated above and around his head. It wasn't long before he floated around to allow Zale in front of Seth.

"...Yet, you will receive the strength of legions, that you may protect the innocent and strike down your foes," Zale said, presenting his weapon to him after only a hint of hesitation. He looked as shocked as the others, but Seth could tell he was happy for him. He knew Zale had been 'close' with Dylann, but he wasn't entirely sure how close. Though it was clear he loved Mark as he moved aside for him; Zale's shimmering rainbow eyes had the same look that Dylann gave him as he watched Mark present the orb.

"Yet you will have the secret wisdom, to discern friend from foe and right from wrong. How, you may ask? Well... that is a secret even I am not privy to. Yet you will have it all the same."

As Seth took it from him, he held it to the empty slot on his weapon; melting, it changed to a violet hue as it not only filled the hollow but also the grooves down the shaft, until it reached a crystallized point at the weapons flat end... though not so flat anymore, once it solidified. Dylann's trident had changed as well, much to everyone's shock as he once again faced Seth.

"And yet, I grant you my power freely. For I am in love with you, my heart."

Everyone watched as Dylann's weapon and symbol of his authority glowed with a brilliant light, though what they couldn't see was the sly wink he gave Seth before waving it over his head several times. It did nothing, but with each wave Seth allowed more and more of his actual form to shine through. With one final wave, the light jumped from the trident to Seth's own weapon, blinding all but the most hardy as he quickly manifested his power in front of them. When the light faded, all could see the timid merwolf had become something greater. The floating orb was now a jewel in the halo-crown above his head. His muscles brimmed with power, but even if they doubted he was the same person now they could see his height matched Dylann's. He was still a merwolf, but he had gotten rid of the sidefins. Instead, he had allowed the hair on his head to grow long, always flowing but never tangling or obscuring his face. His beard spanned his jawline and reached down to his chest, and lines of magical power pulsed along the markings of his fur and scales. His eyes were still violet, though now they looked full of knowledge and wisdom... at least that part of the ceremony had seemed to be true, because he could feel it inside him as if it were his own. Dylann smiled, and he knew it was because of him.

"King Ortun, you are no longer of Temperance; you are now Temperance himself. A title we now share in our realm," Dylann said, and Seth gracefully bowed to him before straightening himself. "What will your first words as a king be to your people?"

Seth hadn't thought that part out, though Dylann had said the words would come to him. He was right; he suddenly felt he knew what to say.

"My people... I am humbled to be your king. Though I did not see myself as worthy, I will strive to become worthy of your trust and reverence. I present myself to you now, in my full power. Behold."

With a wave of his glowing harpoon, he sent out the wave of power he had been holding back until now; in an instant, everyone who belonged to the realm could feel he was, indeed, their king. Seth could also feel Dylann's influence among them, mingling with his own; while he could sense some dissent, it was all swept away as everyone began to bow... not just to Dylann, but to him. He found it unsettling, but then, he had never been a royal before. He knew it just came with the territory, but their reverence did seem to serve a purpose as he felt energy flowing into him. A small bit from each one as they willingly gave it to him, yet it felt different from when he normally fed. These were oaths of fealty, weren't they? He knew without a doubt they were now loyal to him, no matter what they felt about his coronation. The only people not bowing were of course Lucian and Zagan, as well as a few other guests, but Lucian wasn't scowling like Seth thought he might be. The dragon was smiling the widest smile of them all. He followed Dylann to their thrones, before each sitting in turn. Dylann first, then Seth. On his left was Zale, ready to defend him at a moment's notice. On Dylann's right, Mark was waiting to attend to any their needs. They both inhaled deeply, power flowing into them from both kings as their voices rang out across the entire realm.

"All hail King Dylann! All hail King Ortun! All hail Temperance!"

And with that, the ceremony was concluded; the people rushed to greet him before a look from Zale caused them to slow down a bit. Laughing, Seth was about to motion for the first to approach before Lucian strode through and asserted his position at the front.

"...So, Seth... or should I say, Ortun," Lucian said, his smile betraying his sharp teeth. "I have to say, I know how to pick them. You are a truly ambitious one."

"Hello, Lucian," Seth said, finally able to greet the daemon as a proper equal. "I don't know if I'm ambitious or not, but I do know I love Dylann. But yes, it seems already such a long time ago that I was a mere mortal... and now here we are."

"Here we are," Lucian laughed. "I truly am proud of you. We'll be seeing a lot more of each other from now on, but today is yours for now. I will see you and Dylann later. I believe I spy some cake over there... enchanted, I assume?"

"Of course, Lucian. Waterlogged chocolate cake doesn't sound very appealing," Seth laughed, though he thought for a moment he could hear a grunt of approval from his left. Looking over to Zale, he simply saw the merlion scanning the crowd, his own weapon in his hands. He didn't look it, but Seth knew he could rip apart a great number of them before he was stopped... not that it would come to that, but he began to truly appreciate just how dangerous he really was.

"...Is there something my lord requires of me?" Zale asked, noticing his gaze.

"No, but if you want some cake you can go get some," Seth laughed, earning a smile from Zale. "Actually, here's my first order: go get yourself some cake. Mark too. I don't think Dylann's going to let anything happen to me while you two enjoy some dessert."

"They'd have to kill me first, my heart," Dylann joked. "Several times, in fact."

"Let's hope it doesn't come to that," Seth said, shaking his head. "Ah, but Lucian, you may go. Thank you for coming... and thank you for everything else you've ever done for us. I really mean that."

"I know you do," Lucian said, before bowing and leaving. Zagan had bowed as well, though Seth could tell he was reluctant to do anything of the sort of his own will. He really was a new Pride daemon, wasn't he? Still, he didn't blame him; his fierce devotion to Lucian hadn't gone unnoticed by him. Seth was about to wave a petitioner forth before Dylann stopped him.

"Leave my new king and husband be for now, my subjects. I know you are eager to greet him, but all in due time. Now go, celebrate with your friends and your family! Let your new king feel your devotion flow through him!"

As if they were never there, the small crowd scattered as they rushed to do just that. Rolling his eyes when no one was looking, he looked over to Dylann before clucking his tongue.

"Did you really have to do that? I can handle myself, you know."

"Today's a day of celebration. Rest, my heart. I can sense your fatigue."

"...That did take a lot out of me. I'm still shaking..." Seth said, holding up his shaky hand to prove his point. Dylann grabbed his hand with his own; their thrones were close enough they could do so comfortably as their arms rested.

"I still can't believe this is real," Dylann said, shaking his head. "That you're really here with me. You've made me so happy, Ortun."

"I'm glad," Seth replied, squeezing his hand before he let go. He waved away some servants who had brought various refreshments for him before leaning back and closing his eyes. This was his seat of power, and he could feel the connection it shared with what was below. The two of them sat there for what seemed an hour, holding each others' hands. Seth felt something new, and laughed a bit before opening one eye. "Lucian's giving someone trouble, I think."

"How do you know that?" Dylann asked, smiling.

"They feel the same way I do when dealing with him sometimes," Seth said, before shaking his head in amazement. "I'm glad I decided to wait until the ceremony. This is... something else entirely. I have so much power now, but... all I want to do is protect them."

"That's all you, before you start thinking my power's changed you. All that's changed is that you have the power to enact your will now, instead of waiting for someone else to help. You're a king now, Ortun."

"I'm a king. Holy... well. You know," Seth said, cutting off the curse. It wasn't fitting for him to say. Not like this, in front of his subjects. Their subjects.

"Not going to lie to you, it's going to be a tough reception later. Gifts will be given, words will be exchanged, favors requested... and I'm going to let you handle all of those, by the way," Dylann chuckled, before growing serious again. "But ah, would you like some refreshments before we go to see Lucian? I believe he's waiting for us. That whole see you later thing wasn't just for show this time."

"I don't need anything right now, especially if Lucian's waiting. You know he hates to wait, even for us," Seth said. He wanted to laugh, but Dylann seemed troubled. "What's wrong?"

"It's not so much as something is 'wrong' as I'm not entirely sure what I'm going to see. He calls it a gift but, well... I really don't want to ruin today for you. I can deal with him myself."

"Eh, it's bothering you. I can tell," Seth said, rising. He knew where Lucian was already; perhaps that earlier disturbance. A quick check and a surprised mind later, and they were both swimming towards one of the nearby side rooms. It would be private. It would be warded. Only those inside would know what business was conducted here. He knew all this, and yet it felt like he was seeing it for the first time because he could feel its very nature as easily as his own hands.

"Are you sure you want to do this now?" Dylann asked; Seth nodded, taking Dylann's hand and kissing it gently.

"You need to learn to trust me, my heart," Seth said, and he could feel Dylann blush through their connection together. "Maybe I won't like it either. But I'd rather just get it over with. So let's do this together, okay?"

"Okay," Dylann said, before opening the door and leading Seth through. Closing the door behind them, they both turned to face Lucian as one.

"Ah, Temperance. So soon?" Lucian asked, smiling. He was addressing them both. "Very well then. Zagan, the contract."

"Are you certain that's wise, Master?"

"Are you questioning my judgement, Zagan? Perhaps I should demote you; a week spent as my personal footstool ought to teach you your place."

"No, my lord. That will not be necessary," Zagan sighed, before a contract manifested within his hands. Placing it on the table, he unravelled it before them; the sheer volume of words and graphics made Seth's head swim before two words in particular stood out to him: Davin Connors.

"...What is the meaning of this, Lucian?" Seth said, glaring straight at him. He saw the daemon's eyes glaze over before he shook his head roughly, reasserting himself.

"Dylann?" Lucian said, looking to him. "Would you please-"

"No, you should answer him," Dylann said, sharing in Seth's displeasure, but not his surprise. Perhaps he had known already; Seth didn't really care as he looked over to Zagan.

"Yes, it is him," Lucian sighed, motioning for Zagan to sit down. "And before you begin to accuse me of falsehood, I want you to hear the whole story from Davin himself."

"My lord, I-" Zagan began, before Lucian snapped his fingers. His form didn't change, though his eyes turned from its inky blackness to Davin's normal ice blue eyes. Eyes Seth knew well.

"...Oh. I see," Davin said, taking a moment to compose himself before he sat down. "...How's Jared?"

"It's not time for him to wake up," Lucian said, before pointing at the couple. "Tell them what happened that night."

"Y...yes, my lord," Davin sighed, still bound under the contract. "I really don't want to relive it but... I'm compelled."

"Just take your time, Davin," Dylann urged.

"I will. But ah... my memories are a bit of a mess right now. I'm not allowed to know whatever... Zagan... knows. I don't really care to know either. Who is this?"

"My husband," Dylann said, grasping Seth's hand even tighter. "King Ortun."

"Holy shit," Davin said, looking at Seth again. He'd been averting his eyes out of respect, but now he truly saw who he was. "We'll have to catch up later when I'm not under contract. I need to tell you what happened after you saw us that night. Though I'm NOT describing what we did together..."

"I'll allow that," Lucian said, smirking. "Just start from the part afterwards."

"...He was sleeping in my arms, peaceful," Davin sighed, closing his eyes. "And then, he woke up screaming. There was so much blood, I thought maybe somehow I'd hurt him without realizing it but... it wouldn't heal. I'm not good at healing but... I knew enough to stop wounds like that, at least. It didn't close. I... called the ambulance. I'm useless. Orias was right. I'm a failure, I..."

"Enough of that," Lucian ordered, snapping Davin out of it. "Remember who you're speaking to, Davin."

"...Yes, Master Lucian," Davin said, wincing slightly at the words. It was like he wouldn't refer to Lucian in any other way except in subservience to him. He probably couldn't; Seth glared at the contract again before looking up at Davin. "You have to understand, my lords. I was and still am not in my right mind. But my master is an old friend of mine, and I trusted him to guide me. He told me what Jared was going through. I couldn't wait that long without... I don't know. I'm not feeling very much like a lust daemon, you see? What if my thoughts turned to anger? Or what if I numbed myself to the point Sloth came to claim me? What if I decided to just eat my problems away in the realm of Gluttony? I'm losing my mind and I can't trust myself. Not ever since..."

"I know that part, Davin," Seth said, sparing him from having to tell him about his involvement with the hivemind. "Do you mind if I tell Dylann?"

"...Not at all, King Ortun," Davin said, closing his eyes. "I need a moment to compose myself. It's like I'm living this all out again..."

"Take your time, Davin," Dylann said, leaning over to let Seth whisper a brief summary of what had happened in the realm of Lust... he seemed even more disturbed as he withdrew. "I had no idea."

"I could just order him to tell me, but... no. I already said I wouldn't," Lucian sighed, clearly irritated at all the secrecy. "Apparently Seth already knew, though?"

"I was there," Seth said, glaring at him. "What happened next?"

"Tell them," Lucian said, after making sure Davin was ready.

"...Anyway, my lord Pride made me an offer. A contract with him, if I followed him out to his vehicle. I... followed. I told him I only wanted to sleep until Jared woke up. That I didn't care what else he decided to do with me in that time. I sort of stopped paying attention after that while he kept talking. I think he was telling me what he was going to include, so it's my fault if I didn't pay attention. I didn't care. We were in his realm before I realized, and I was brought to his seat of power. I signed the contract then and there."

"Without reading it, I might add," Lucian chuckled. "Easiest deal I've made in some time."

"And an extensive one, at that," Dylann said, still reading the document. "Do you really have to put clauses everywhere, Lucian? It's a pain in the ass to read with the way you design these sometimes."

"The devil is in the details," Lucian said, pleased with himself as he brought a claw down to the parchment. "Speaking of details, this clause is my favorite one of the bunch. If I could draw your attention to it for a moment?"

"No..." Dylann sighed, sounding incredibly disappointed as his eyes scanned the clause. "Lucian, you can't do this."

"I can, actually," Lucian said, causing Seth to try to read it. Dylann helped him with his finger, pointing to the hard to see fine print as it spiralled toward its own center. And this was just one detail on the border. He would have mistaken it easily for just a simple art decision.

"...Goddammit," Seth said, knowing anything he did would be pointless. Yet he wanted to help Davin still. "Lucian, just tell me in simple terms what it means. Tell me it doesn't mean what I think it does."

"I can lay out simply, though I don't know about that second part," Lucian said, not even looking. "It means after an allotted amount of time of my choosing, I can renew the contract myself for any length of time. Indefinitely, if I so choose."

"Wait, what are you saying?" Davin asked, concerned.

"I'll forgive the insolence this once, Davin... but you wanted to get out of your head while Jared is unconsious. While he sleeps. Once he wakes up, you go back to being Davin... but if I choose to renew this, and I can whether you want me to or not, then that same condition will apply. When Jared sleeps, you will sleep... and Zagan will wake up. Zagan would return to my realm, where time flows much more slowly than it does in even this realm. Jared will wake up, Davin returns. Jared sleeps, Zagan returns. Perhaps at first it won't be so bad, yes? I could even allow you to remember what Zagan does. But eventually, day after day, night after night... well, maybe you begin to think just like Zagan, and that's not so bad. Then you begin to think Zagan is a much better name for yourself. And eventually..."

"...Eventually I will be Zagan all the time, is what you're saying," Davin said, gritting his teeth in rage. In his draconic form, it was especially intimidating to Seth. "...What about Jared?"

"That is the one thing you and that little personality I created inside of you share. Your memories of Jared, and your feelings. That won't change. But everything else? Fair game."

"Why are you doing this, Lucian?" Seth said, his voice colder than he thought possible. "What do you want?"

"I'm doing this because I can. And I want nothing from either of you; I already have what I want. Unless you wish to add your names to the list?"

"We'll pass," Dylann said, his voice scaring Seth. He'd never heard him like this before.

"...But you don't have to renew it, right?" Davin asked, hopeful. "I-"

"I think that's enough of show-and-tell, Davin. Thank you for your time," Lucian said, polite despite the situation. Snapping his fingers, Davin closed his eyes and Zagan opened them to reveal his pupiless black eyes.

"How may I be of service, Master Lucian?"

"By simply sitting right where you are and keeping quiet," Lucian ordered, and Zagan nodded as he complied. His smile unnerved Seth now that he knew who was hidden inside. It felt wrong to him.

"I fail to see how this is a gift, Lucian," Dylann said, after a moment or two of silence.

"I gift you with the knowledge of this contract," Lucian explained, before turning to look at Seth. "And for you, King Ortun... this is a gift as well. If we are to be true equals, then you must know me at my most ruthless. That I can and will take those you care about away if they are foolish enough to sign a contract without negotiating the details or pouring over every single detail of it. I originally did this as a favor to Davin, but after he gave me so much creative freedom with it... well, I simply couldn't resist. I always thought he'd make a better dragon anyway, and I admit he has been on my mind for some time now. He is mine if I choose to take him, and there is nothing you or the other Virtues can do about it."

"I assume Justice has already seen this, then?" Dylann asked, before Seth could even suggest it as an option.

"Of course. You think I'd risk this contract on a technicality? Don't insult me, Dylann. It's completely above board, and you know Justice doesn't care if we Sins fight amongst ourselves. Davin is a Lust daemon after all... for now."

The harpoon buried itself in the wall before Seth fully realized what he was doing. Rising, he slowly swam over to retrieve it as he loomed over Lucian's smaller stature. Lucian didn't flinch as the weapon slid across the side of his face; careful not to cut him, Seth brought the point to the end of his snout.

"When Jared wakes, I highly suggest that you destroy this contract," Seth said, his eyes glowing fiercely with his power. There was not an ounce of rage in his voice, though he'd nearly been fit to burst before.

"Let's not be childish about this, Ortun," Lucian said, using a finger to push the point away as he shook his head. Instead of withdrawing, he brought the point underneath Lucian's scaled chin and raised his head to look at him better.

"I'd say he's doing what I was feeling, Lucian," Dylann said. "Do not call my husband 'childish' again. You deliberately provoked both of us with this... I would say farce, but I know your contracts to be legal and binding. It's a point of pride for you."

"If you renew that contract, or create a new one to try to circumvent it somehow, I will come to challenge you," Seth said, causing Lucian to laugh as he kept eye contact. Lucian wasn't going to back down from this display of power no matter what, it seemed.

"What have you to offer me in exchange for Davin?"

"Myself, of course. And my true name," Seth said, causing even Dylann to feel anxiety through their link. "But when I come to challenge you, I will not lose."

"What makes you say that?"

"Because you'll let me win. And then I'll have you tell me your true name instead."

"Whatever you say," Lucian said, smirking as Seth's eyes stopped glowing. Turning away, he circled around to massage the stress from Dylann's shoulders while Lucian watched them. "I sure do know how to pick them. Such ambition. But as for you Za- oh, I see what happened now."

Zagan was bound with violet bonds of some kind, a sorrowful look in his eyes. He was still unable to speak due to Lucian's command; whether he would have responded physically to Seth didn't matter to the new king. He hadn't wanted to risk it. Sighing, Lucian reached out toward the contract as it rolled itself up and hopped into his hand, before vanishing without a trace.

"My servant seems to be tied up at the moment, Ortun."

"Allow me to help him with that. You are guests, after all. I did nothing to him that he didn't want deep down anyway."

"Such... hospitality..."

The purple bonds untied themselves and uncoiled from his legs as they revealed themselves to be one solid cord. Slithering across the table like a snake, Seth reached out to allow it to coil around his arm as his markings returned to various parts of his body.

"Orias has taught you some things, hasn't he?" Lucian said, smiling. "And you tied up my servant instead of me. Good call."

"I think you've overstayed your welcome, Lucian. Besides, don't you have business to attend to? We shouldn't keep you."

"I do, now that you mention it. In my realm. Do you know how long a day on Earth lasts in my realm, Ortun?"

"Long enough to enjoy kicking your ass if you cross me ever again," Seth said, before kissing Dylann on top of his head. For once, Dylann smiled at the crude language. "Leave. Or I'll toss you into the Maelstrom myself."

"No need for that. We were just leaving anyway. But I meant what I said before, Seth. I am proud of you. Come, Zagan... oh, and you can speak now."

"Understood, Master Lucian. Right away, Master Lucian," Zagan said, looking at Seth every time he did it with a hateful glare. "May I do anything else for you, Master Lucian?"

Seth didn't hear the rest as he slammed the door on them with his new power, before sealing it entirely. Wrapping his arms around Dylann's chest, he sighed heavily. They stayed that way for a long while, emotionally reassuring each other through their bond before Seth finally gave voice to his thoughts.

"I made a fool out of myself, didn't I?" Seth asked, causing Dylann to laugh as he kissed his hand.

"I don't know if it's because you grew up mortal or you just have the biggest balls of any daemon I've ever met, but that was... exciting. Except for the part where you offered yourself and your true name; that was absolutely terrifying. But the rest of what you did was exciting."

"Never stood up to him before?"

"On my own you mean? Without it being 'Virtue business' or within my realm? Not at all. Never had a reason to. But if you hadn't done all that, I would have. The nerve of him, doing this on today of all days... but are you okay, my heart? You're trembling."

"I had to use a bit of power for all that," Seth said, shaking his head. "You know how I get when I use a lot too quickly. And I used a lot for the ceremony before this."

"Let's retire to our bedchambers, then," Dylann suggested, and Seth found himself smiling despite the stress the two of them were feeling.

"Yeah. I could sleep for a while. Unless..."

"Unless what?" Dylann asked, rising to face him. They both seemed to be feeling the same thing as they looked at each other with desire.

"Well, did you know I'm venomous?"

"No, I didn't... but I can feel it, now that you mention it. Interesting. I thought those teeth were longer, but... what does your venom have to do with sleeping?"

"Absolutely nothing," Seth said, laughing. "I was thinking we could do something else."

"...I see," Dylann said, giving him a quick kiss. "Normally I would say 'maybe later', but... right now, you're the sexiest daemon I've ever laid eyes on. Even more so than usual."

"You like it when your man takes charge, huh?"

"No. I like it when my man is a complete badass."

"What can I say, I feel like one. But uh, dear?"

"Yes, my heart?"

"Watch your language," Seth laughed, winking as he unsealed the door and quickly slipped through.

"Come back here, you!" Dylann said, his playful shouts echoing behind him as they both hurried to their destination. Even after what they had just been through, they both felt somehow that it was going to be okay in the end. Seth would make sure of it.
