#29 of Deviant Delights: Vol. I

Jared remains comatose, even with the Elders of Lust and Envy watching over him. Davin adjusts to his new role as Zagan, Herald of Pride while Dylann reveals the secret of his power to Seth. Mark and Zale are invited to the coronation of a new king.

Liam snapped awake, readjusting the hat on his head. Lucian had let him keep it after insisting he would stay. Of course, even after everything he'd helped him with, the damn dragon wouldn't let him know anything about Davin other than he was 'doing something for him'. Even knowing Jared wouldn't wake up yet, Liam still felt responsible for him. He couldn't blame Davin for not wanting to be here until then; it was hard enough just for him to be there himself. He'd closed the bar until further notice, stating 'renovations' on the sign... of course, now he'd have to think of some renovations once this was all over. More work. Fuck.

With the hat and Lucian's 'persuasion', he was able to keep watch over Jared in case he actually did show some signs of waking up... or if he took a turn for the worse. Lucian had briefed him fully on what was happening, but he still couldn't believe a dream could cause this much real damage. He should've known better.

"Hmmmm... didn't know one of you would be here," Maeryn said, closing the door behind him. That must have been what had woken Liam up. Even then, he hadn't actually been sleeping so much as conserving his energy... besides, it made the time pass faster this way.

"When you're done pouting, you'll tell me how the hell you got in here," Liam said, removing his hat.

"Oh! Liam... yeah, that makes sense," Maeryn said, shrugging as he took a sip from what looked to be a strawberry smoothie. "Anyway, Jared's my cousin's brother's niece's son, twice removed. If you believe the rumors I started, anyway. Throw a few ugly tears, and boom. Instant access."

"...You'll have to teach me how to do that one of these days," Liam sighed, slightly annoyed even despite being impressed. "But seriously. Why the hell didn't you tell me this could happen?"

"Uh, nobody asked? I did say to tell me if he had another of those dreams though, didn't I?" Maeryn said, getting defensive. "You boys never listen to me. Could've done this properly if I'd known. But now we've got the hospital and mortals involved, well... at least I've got Oublis now. Should be a cinch to alter the records once it's all over. By the time we're done, nobody will remember his name, much less why he was here. It's better that way, though. It'll let him have a more normal life, and besides, you never know who might be looking for someone like him."

"You mean, like Odin?" Liam said, resting his hand against the book he'd been reading. "...Still doesn't tell me what he is now, though."

"Hmmm... something like Uther. But not quite," Maeryn said, thinking for a moment as he twirled a lock of teal hair with his finger. "I'm hesitant to use the words 'apotheosis' and 'god', but honestly most gods in old norse tales are really just incredibly gifted heroes. Then again, maybe they really were gods. I don't even know all the details, and I hung out with them."

"Eh, figures you'd be Loki," Liam sighed, causing Maeryn to giggle. "I mean you don't really fit anyone else in there better than him. Did you ah... really turn into a mare and-"

"The less you know, the better," Maeryn said, cutting him off. "Besides, I don't think Jared wants to hear about all of that right now. If he can hear us, anyway. I've never really known how exactly this works. It's only been done a few times to my knowledge."

"Do you know about Davin, then?"

"Hm, that he's doing something or other for Scaley-Butt McPrideface? Not really more than you know, I think. But I mean, that's gotta be pretty traumatic for him. Having to well... let's just say I wouldn't blame him for wanting to get out of his head a bit, this time. Besides, I trust Lucian will take care of him. Don't you?"

"I do. I just wish he'd talk to me at least. But then, I guess I'm not as reliable as Lucian right now."

"No, it's more that he's known Lucian longer than you. Besides, they're totally fucking on the side," Maeryn said, causing Liam to blush. "Yeah, I knew. I mean it's hard not to notice he comes to your bar every week, specifically to see Davin. Of course, I don't say anything about it. I may spread rumors, but not about Pride. He'd fuckin' flay me alive just to maintain that reputation of his."

"And you'd have deserved it, but let's move on," Liam said with a half-hearted laugh. "It's been three days, Maeryn. No change."

"No change is good this early," Maeryn said, reassuring him. "But between you and me? I didn't think he had the balls to go through with it. Color me impressed. And that's a genuine compliment, mind you. I really am impressed."

"What I don't get is... why now?" Liam asked, causing Maeryn to tilt his head. "You know what I mean. First Uther, now Jared. Why all this shit now? Gods and legends don't wake up for no reason, you know."

"Hmm... who knows," Maeryn said, shrugging. "But I guess I'd be lying if I said it wasn't bothering me too. Sure, you've all gotten up to some weird shit lately, but that usually isn't enough by itself to cause all this to happen with the mortals. But then again... the world is a dangerous place."

"And getting more dangerous," Liam said, agreeing. "I guess there's no way to know for certain."

"Nope. You'll drive yourself crazy and paranoid if you try. Even Prudentia knows to take a break for tea. Speaking of breaks..."

"No."

"Oh come on... you said it yourself. It's been threeee dayyyyys," Maeryn whined. "Besides, I can watch over the little tyke for a while. I know the most about this, you know? He's in good hands."

"...Call me if anything happens," Liam said, sighing as he put the hat back on. "Promise?"

"Cross my heart and hope to die," Maeryn giggled, pulling up a different chair to sit beside Jared. "Just get some fresh air, Liam. Jared wouldn't want you to do this to yourself for his sake. Even if he doesn't know how lucky he is to have you as a friend."

"He's my employee, but... yeah. I do care about him," Liam sighed. "I don't know if we can be friends or not, with me as his boss. But if he could hear me right now, I'd want him to know I'm worried for him. That I hope he keeps fighting. That he stays alive, for himself if no one else. I-"

"Gooooo, Liam. Before I change my mind," Maeryn said, smiling despite how annoyed he sounded. "Seriously. Go get hammered or something. Get laid. Whatever gives you some 'you' time right now. Okay?"

"...Okay," Liam said, gathering whatever things he had on him into his satchel. He'd have to thank Lucian later for getting him some essentials... as well as the 'light' reading material. "I'm going. Try not to frown anymore or you'll get a wrinkle."

"God, what a nightmare," Maeryn laughed, waving goodbye to Liam as he left the room. The staff didn't look at him other than to make sure he wasn't going anywhere he wasn't supposed to be, but it was easy to pretend to be just another of Lucian's assistants on his way to something else. He briefly wondered what it'd actually be like, but he dispelled the fantasy before he could properly envision it. Now wasn't really the time for that. Not until Jared woke up and he found Davin. Maybe then he could take a small break... head pounding, he took his spray from his satchel and dosed himself before moving on.

"You'll give yourself an ulcer if you don't rest. Even if you are a daemon," Dylann said, resting a hand on the merwolf's shoulder.

"Dylann! You startled me," Seth said, taking his hand and pressing it against his lips. "You know I can't rest until I figure this out, though. I know what we were told, but..."

"But nothing," Dylann said, pulling Seth up from his chair. They were in the grand library of his palace; Seth had been studying day and night for a 'cure' for Jared's condition. Dylann had let him do it to occupy his time, but now he was obsessing over it. It wasn't healthy, especially when they already knew the answer. "Why don't you take a break, Seth? You know time flows more slowly here; it's only been three days Earth time. If nothing else, I miss your company."

"...A break with you does sound nice," Seth said, relenting as he rested against Dylann. "Besides, I'm not getting anywhere with this story. It's impossible to tell what's real or not when I wasn't actually there."

"You could ask Maeryn."

"I did. Several times. You know how he is, though. Just kept telling me to be patient and shit..."

"Ortun..."

"Sorry. I know you don't like me cursing here. It's not very noble of me, is it?"

"I just hate to see such ugly words pass those beautiful lips of yours," Dylann said, smiling as Seth hugged him tightly. "Come with me. I want to show you something."

"You always want to show me something new," Seth laughed, though he didn't stop Dylann from leading him.

"Yes, but this is... different. No one else has been there besides me."

"That is different," Seth said, completely intrigued now. "Lead on, my liege."

"Only if you'll follow," Dylann said, as they swam with each other. Before too long, they had traced the corridors all the way back until they were in the throne room. When they stopped, Seth furrowed his brow in confusion.

"Where is everyone?"

"I ordered them away."

"...But why? Aren't we going somewhere?"

"Yes. You know this place as the heart of my power, but that's not entirely true. Watch..."

Dylann moved behind his throne, pressing his hand in a specific way against the back and channeling his power. With a click, the throne and the platform it stood on slowly slid forward.

"No way," Seth said, before Dylann took his hand again. "What's down there?"

"Only one way to find out. Stay close to me. This may get a bit intense."

"Okay... though I don't really get it still. But I trust you."

Dylann smiled, before holding him close to him. Swimming as one, he could tell Seth was beginning to feel the constant pulse of energy coming from below. It wasn't until they reached the bottom that he let go, and even then he made sure Seth didn't swim too far away.

"A door?" Seth asked, his eyes roving over the intricate designs engraved upon it. "Why?"

"Don't you feel it?" Dylann asked. "That power?"

"I do, but... what is this?"

Dylann opened the door, before floating into the chamber with Seth. At his command the door closed once more, leaving them in complete darkness. Before Seth could protest, Dylann focused his power into the room. Light began shining from everywhere around them, causing Seth to gasp at what looked like the night sky above them. And then he saw what he thought was a giant aquamarine structure in the center.

"...I feel like I'm seeing something I shouldn't be," Seth said, amazed but cautious.

"You asked me what this place was. This is the true heart of my power. The very center of it. This is what makes me the ruler of this realm. To think, it was so small when I placed it here eons ago."

"It grew?"

"Don't you see what it is? Look closer... but do not touch."

He watched as Seth floated a bit closer, shielding his eyes from the intense glow. The power was refreshing to Dylann; he rarely got this close to it anymore, though he couldn't really complain either. It made his head swim, but not so much as it did when he was younger and more foolish.

"It's coral..." Seth said, turning back to Dylann in astonishment. "How..."

"It's different for each realm, and for each elder," Dylann said, swimming to his side. "I can't say where or how it manifests for them. I can't even properly explain how this works, either. But... if my title grants me the power to rule, then this grants me the power to make my will manifest with just a thought. I know, you think you already know how to do that. But... you don't. You know how to change. How to alter. You don't know how to make something exist as if it had been there all along."

"What's powering it? I mean..."

"Itself? I don't really know anymore. I just know that one day, I existed. One day, I created this coral. One day, I made this place an ocean instead of the shallow pond it was by comparison. If I were to abdicate my title, that part of my power would return here... to await the next Temperance. Though I don't have plans to do that any time soon, I assure you."

"...I knew you were ancient, but wow," Seth said, smiling. "I'm not worthy to be in your presence, am I?"

"Don't talk like that," Dylann said. "Just seeing this place makes you worthy of more than simply 'basking in my presence', or whatever Lucian would say. It's good to be humble, but remember your own worth as well. If you were truly unworthy, I would not have fallen so madly in love with you."

"I never tire of hearing that," Seth said, smiling up at Dylann. "This place... thank you for showing me this. It's beautiful and well, amazing really. I never knew this was down here."

"...Ortun, how long have we known each other now?"

"A long time," Seth said, sighing as Dylann held him close. "So long I lost count."

"And in all that time, how long have you been in love with me?"

"...A very long time. So long I lost count," Seth said, chuckling. "I'm sorry I... when I was mortal, and I was taken back... I forgot so many things. I rebelled against what I hated. I became a lust daemon. While that was fun, admittedly... it confused me all the same. I mistook what feelings I had for sexual attraction for you."

"Are you still confused?" Dylann asked, and Seth shook his head.

"No. I remember everything, now that I am a daemon in this realm. Feels like some kind of dream I've woken up from... funny. Didn't I think the same thing when I was mortal?"

"Maybe life itself is a dream. Or maybe not," Dylann said. "But still. I am glad you remember."

"Why the questions, my lord?" Seth said. "Shouldn't we head back?"

"...In a moment. I just need to ask you one last question before we go."

"What is it?" Seth asked, though by now even he had begun to suspect something was up. He was always sharp like that. If it wasn't his questions that told him, certainly it was the sea-goat's body language as he held Seth's hands in both of his.

"Will you rule with me?"

"I'm your Second, my liege. Of course I will-"

"No. That isn't what I mean. Let me ask a different way, then: will you rule by my side not as my Second, but as a king?"

"I..." Seth said, before pausing to compose himself. "You'd really... offer me that?"

"I just did," Dylann said, smiling. "But I understand how difficult a decision this must be. Take your time. I will love you always, no matter your choice."

"But you know Orias has offered me something like that as well."

"As his equal, though even if he has grown his own heart of power... well, I cannot speak for him. I will not put myself between you two."

"...I'm glad you understand that," Seth sighed, biting his lip. "You've really put me on the spot here, you know? What if I..."

"You are who you choose to be," Dylann reassured him. "Shall we head back? I know you need time and I-"

"Yes. I will."

"What... what did you just say?" Dylann said, his heart beating faster than he ever thought it could.

"I said yes," Seth said, hugging him tightly. "I don't really know if that makes me a king or some kind of consort or whatever, but... yes. I accept. Affirmative. What more do I need to say?"

"Nothing more than what you have already said," Dylann said, tears welling up from his eyes. Holding a hand out toward the coral, his trident manifested from the water as power swirled from it to the weapon. Before long, it glowed as brightly as the coral itself. "To rule with me, to be a king of this realm alongside me... you must take into yourself the true power of this realm. It will stay a part of you until the day you abdicate your new title."

"My new title?" Seth said, watching as Dylann brought the trident between them.

"You will become Temperance alongside me. It is not often two daemons share their rule over an aspect, but it has been done before. To avoid confusion though, I will be the title bearer in most cases. But it does not make you less than equal to me in all things. Do you understand what it is I am giving you?"

"...Yeah. Just a little... overwhelming, I guess," Seth replied. "But I'm ready when you are, my liege. If you will still have me, that is."

"Then take my trident, Ortun. It is my very heart I give to you."

Seth slowly reached toward the weapon, hesitation and doubt on his face... but then in one determined motion he grasped the glowing trident and instantly cried out. Grabbing it with his other hand to steady himself, the merwolf's muscles slowly expanded, starting with his forearms and traveling upward. While that was happening, he grew in height as a purple jewel formed above his head; glowing with power, it began to form an aquamarine crown around him. Yet it was different than a simple appointment as it began to form leylines along and around it. This was no imitation or symbol; it was true power. Dylann knew that some elders liked to appoint seconds, or whatever they decided to call them, and give them small symbols like this. But he had never enjoyed such flair without it truly meaning something like it did now. As the glow faded from the trident and Seth's growth slowed to a halt, he opened his eyes and smiled.

"Thank you, my heart," Seth said, handing Dylann's trident back to him. "I... wow. I feel like I want to be regal here, but... this is intense."

"You'll get plenty of practice, King Ortun," Dylann said, drawing close to him. Seth seemed to realize he was at eye level now, their lips closer together than before.

"King Ortun..." Seth said, shaking his head in amazement as it finally sunk in. "I never imagined this would be my life. That I would share my life with another, especially one as loving as you. But... tell me, Dylann. How many others have you shared this with? Like this, I mean?"

"You are the only one," Dylann said, and Seth instantly kissed him with passion unlike any Dylann had shared with him before. It felt like an eternity and more before they parted, and Seth's eyes looked into his own. "...I have loved and lost, but you are the only one to share this power with me. To rule by my side. Do you know how truly special you are to me?"

"I never thought I was special enough to earn a lord's favor. Nevermind Temperance himself," Seth said, looking more regal by the moment. "But this power is... so much. I am but a vessel for it, yet I overflow. I never understood what burden you bore until now."

"It is also a gift," Dylann said, stroking the growing beard upon Seth's chin. "Give it some time, though. You will grow into your new role."

"...What shall I tell Orias, though? Not to ruin the moment, but... he is someone I love, Dylann. Even still..."

"If he cannot see you as I do, then he does not know what he is missing," Dylann said, pure love in his eyes. "Did you tell him of your aspect?"

"He postponed our meeting when he found out about Jared. I think to give me some time. We've been talking on the phone, though," Seth said, a troubled look on his face. "...What if he tries to take me, though? What if he never loved me?"

"You cannot be turned without abdicating your title now," Dylann said, sharing in his worries. "You are not immune to most charms, but you are more powerful now than you have ever been. More powerful than some older daemons, in fact. You say you share in the rule of his realm, yes? Then what do you have to fear? But I do not think it will come to that. I've seen how he looks at you, when you were together in the bar. When you thought I wasn't looking."

"I'm not used to being a daemon yet, it seems," Seth sighed, before smiling once more. "I keep second guessing myself, don't I? But that stops today. I must be strong for our people."

"You will not be alone, my heart. Shall we return?"

"...Maybe in a little while," Seth said, nuzzling against him. Even though he had grown, he was still slightly smaller than Dylann. Staying in each other's arms, they simply enjoyed the moment as the false stars above shone down upon the two rulers.

*******

"Elder Envy, how do you do?"

"Ugh, way to make me feel old," Maeryn said, looking up at the suited daemon. "Lucian checking up on me? I don't blame him, but I'm fine."

"My lord has sent me to watch over Jared," Zagan said, removing his hat. Unlike the enchanted hat he had given Liam some nights ago, his was simply part of his outfit. Though, he had to admit his lord had been correct on which suit would not only look best but would feel best on him too. "You may stay, or you may go. He did not specify what I should do if someone else were to visit. Unless, of course, they should prove a threat."

"Well, honey, I'm as harmless as they come," Maeryn said, smiling. Zagan knew not to trust that smile, but to avoid being rude he returned it. "You look kind of familiar, though. Who are you again? You never said."

"Zagan, Herald of Pride," the silver-haired man said, his red eyes looking over at Jared before returning to the elder. "A pleasure to make your acquaintance."

"Hmmm? Lucian got himself a new Herald, huh? Still don't know why he insists on such a gaudy title, but I guess that's just how he is. How long you been on the job, sweetie?"

"Hm, how long has it been?" Zagan asked himself, rubbing his chin thoughtfully. "Time blurs for me, and I am so busy... but I imagine not long by Earth's time. How long has Jared been this way? I cannot say I remember."

"Well, I've been here for two days," Maeryn said, counting on his fingers as he thought aloud. "And Liam was here for three days before I told him to take a break... though he did try to come back an hour later. I kicked him out again. So five days? Max?"

"And no change. That is good, in its own way," Zagan said, a note of compassion in his voice as he started to reach for Jared's hand. Catching himself, he reached into his pocket and pulled out a silver watch. "Have they updated who may visit him?"

"Hmmm... I don't really know that one. Been busy pretending I'm 'normal' every so often since it's such a pain in the ass to explain the whole daemon deal. Though don't worry, I haven't taken my eye off him. I have my ways."

"I don't doubt that, sir."

"Ugh... just call me Maeryn, honey. I promise you that's way more appealing to me than 'sir' or 'lord'."

"If you prefer I do so, then I shall oblige."

"So what's your deal? Besides 'Herald of Pride'," Maeryn said, mocking the title slightly. "You know, this whole getup? What makes you a pride daemon?"

"I take great pride in my skills as a masseuse, cook, bartender, dancer... really, whatever Master Lucian requires of me. Though primarily my role is to protect his sacred person when I am not otherwise occupied."

"Must have been one hell of a contract, Davin."

"Yes, it... wait, you know?" Zagan said, his smile faltering for a moment.

"I do now," giggled Maeryn. Letting the words sink in, Zagan cursed his own ineptitude.

"Master Lucian will be displeased..."

"I won't tell anyone if you don't," Maeryn said, winking. "But honestly, it wasn't too hard to figure out. Davin goes to Pride's realm on the same day you show up as his new Herald? I'm surprised Liam didn't put two and two together."

"He has a lot on his mind, as you well know," Zagan said. "As Davin knew."

"Hmmm, so the contract doesn't require a total memory wipe at least. That saves some time getting to know you," Maeryn said, nodding. "Did you want some time alone with Jared? That is why he sent you after all. Not just to guard him."

"...If it is not too much trouble," Zagan said, letting his guard down a bit. "I would not wish to inconvenience you, but..."

"No problemo," Maeryn said, standing up and stretching. "Besides, I could use an hour outside this place. Been two days, you know?"

"Thank you, si- Maeryn," Zagan said, bowing his head. "Have a pleasant day."

"Geez, you really are a perfect gentleman," Maeryn blushed, though Zagan was sure it was an act. Still, the praise went straight to his ego as the elder left, leaving him alone with Jared. Moving a chair closer, he sat down before slowly resting his hand on Jared's. Zagan knew the moment he looked at Jared's face that Davin would have fallen apart completely at the sight. Even his own heart still hurt, but as distanced as he was from his old self it at least was tolerable to bear.

"Jared," he sighed, looking down as he composed himself. "I don't know if you can hear me. I'm Davin, but also... not Davin. But I remember you, no matter what name I possess right now. I hope you can understand that without Master Lucian's guidance, I would be lost. I had thought at first, as Davin, that he wished to simply use me in my weakness... but now I see that he saved me from myself. Who knows what I would have done as Davin. Another elder may have taken advantage of me, or I may have gone off the medicine to become a drone once more... but here I am, as Zagan. I wish I could have visited you sooner. From what I understand... you are in great pain and agony. But through that pain, you will be changed. I don't know what scares me more; that you are suffering, or that you will be different than you were. But then I am also different than I once was, however temporary it may be. Hopefully when you wake, I will be Davin again."

Zagan looked up from Jared's hand to see his face; his eyepatch had been removed, not needing it in his current state. For all the suffering he was experiencing, it seemed to all the world that he slept peacefully. Reaching up to caress his cheek, Zagan froze; they were moving. His lips were moving! Standing, he knocked his chair over by accident as he rushed to listen.

"...A poem?" he asked himself, closing his eyes. He didn't know whether to feel relief or disappointment, but he listened as the words weakly tumbled from his lips. Yet, he somehow knew it was about him. About Davin, and about what he had just told him. It was like he was writing an epic. "I see. So that's how you're holding on."

Righting his chair, he sat down once more and grabbed Jared's hand a little more firmly. If he could hear him, maybe he could feel him. If only a little.

"Cling to life, Jared. You are stronger than you can possibly know. And... I would very much like to go on a second date with you. Please... stay alive."

*******

"Where are you hiding..." Zale said, a playful smile on his face as he scanned the water. He was with Mark in the special swimming dimension Dylann had made for him, though now it was decorated not unlike one of the aquariums the daemon kept in the apartment. Spying a rustle of movement, Zale propelled forward with a flick of his powerful tail. "Gotcha!"

What he ended up grabbing was nothing, but before he could adjust he was diving headfirst into the soft floor. Scrambling, he righted himself but not before he felt a tap on his back.

"Nice try," Mark said, his voice just a bit different here. Something about being a merlion again was causing him to act just how he used to as Amon, though to a much lesser degree. To think he could still sneak up and fool him, even without the ability to cloak himself anymore. Zale smiled despite his embarrassment, before whirling around to hug him tightly. Laughing, they swam together for a moment before their eyes locked; slowing to a near halt, they brought their lips together in pure desire.

"I love you," Zale said, once they took a break from exploring each others' mouths.

"You say that every day," Mark laughed, flashing a toothy grin. "But I love you too."

"Do you think we should go somewhere today, or should we just swim until the sun sets?" Zale asked, pulling away to rest on a nearby rock. Mark lazily swam around him, enjoying his first real swim in some time.

"Honestly? There's nothing I want to do except go back to work," Mark said, scowling a bit. "But even if Liam opened tomorrow, it wouldn't feel right with Jared still..."

"Hey, don't worry. He'll be fine," Zale said, though he wasn't so certain himself. "Even Uther has hope for him. And you know how grumpy he can be sometimes."

"He is a bit gloomy sometimes, but not so much now that he's got a man," Mark purred, brushing playfully against Zale before swimming out of reach once more. "Still, I can't help but worry. Davin's doing who knows what in Lucian's realm and won't take our calls, Dylann is away managing his realm, Seth is doing who knows what... though I do hope he's taking it easy."

"He's probably messing around with his boyfriend," Zale sighed, shrugging. "I didn't know he was... well, best not to think about it. He's a grown man, or... daemon now, I guess. He can do what he wants."

"I still remember him as the new guy," Mark chuckled. "I felt so protective of him, even before everything that's happened. I know now he could probably protect me, but I still can't help but wonder if I can't do something for him. Especially since it seems a lot of our coworkers are taking some weird spray they don't want to talk about. Something happened, I'm telling you."

"And when they're ready, they'll tell us," Zale warned, though even he had to admit it was weird. Even Liam was taking it, and he never took medicine or drugs beyond the occasional drink of alcohol. "But there's nothing we can really do about all that, you know? Sucks, but... at least we can be their friends once all is said and done."

"I suppose that's all we can do," Mark said, though it was clear he wasn't happy about it. "When you're right, you're right. But you asked what I wanted to do today? Well... I was wondering if we could pay a visit to Dylann? He's having some sort of ceremony apparently."

"How do you know that?" Zale asked, before Mark brought something from behind one of the many ocean plants around them. Depositing it in what passed for his lap, he realized it was a scroll with a seal on it, though the seal had been broken. "Where did you get this?"

"Just appeared in my hands while I was hiding from you," Mark said, smirking. "Don't know why it didn't appear to you instead, though it's addressed to the two of us so... maybe it just picked whoever was closest. Realms-wise."

"Hm, maybe," Zale said, before unrolling the waterproof parchment. Scanning, he furrowed his brow in concentration before chuckling. "I see. I wonder what's so important that he wants us to be there?"

"It doesn't really go into specifics. But I just assumed he'd probably tell us once we got there," Mark said, resting beside Zale before pointing to a strange phrase on the parchment. "I know you didn't study up much on the finer details of magic when we were Dylann's servants, but as his former spymaster I know an activation phrase when I see one. My spies would use these all the time, you see. He probably can't come get us himself, so he set up a spell to take us there. One time use, so... we'll have to hold hands."

"I think I can do better than that," Zale said, reaching around Mark's shoulders and pulling him close as Mark wrapped an arm around his waist. Using their free hands, they each pulled the parchment open again. "Let's go pay that old sea-goat a visit."

Mark nodded, before scanning the words. It wasn't long before he was reciting the old language word for word, sounding as music to Zale's ears as a torrent of water rushed around them. It was like a small Maelstrom; hell, maybe they had already passed through at that point and this was just the aftermath... but before he realized fully what was happening they were within the palace in a side room set up for their arrival. At least, Zale assumed it had been set up for them as they were welcomed by one of the servants before he swam away.

"...That was fast," Zale said, blinking at the bubbles left in his wake. "You okay, Mark?"

"I'm used to this sort of thing," Mark said, yawning lazily as they waited. "Though I wonder if Seth is going to-"

"Hey guys," Seth said, poking his head through the door. "I see you got the invite."

"Got here before us, huh?" Zale chuckled, causing Seth to scratch the back of his head.

"Something like that," the merwolf said, swimming up to them. He was the same height as they were, and if Zale recalled correctly that servant had been much smaller...

"It feels strange, being back here. We're not being turned into his Seconds again, are we?" Mark joked, though there was a clear desire there. Zale couldn't deny feeling that same desire, but they had no intention of staying in this realm any time soon. They still had so much of Earth to see and experience.

"No, but Dylann thought it would be best if you were the same as before, being close friends of his and all. Though if he breaks out any symbols or necklaces, turn tail and swim," Seth laughed, winking. "Anyway, it's good to see you guys again. Been a while."

"You haven't been here the whole time, have you?" Mark asked, before Seth nodded. "Really?"

"I guess you wouldn't know..." Seth sadly said, before reaching up to his earring. A flash of light, and it transformed into a necklace. "He's not turning you into Seconds. Not unless you want to, of course..."

"But you were? Did he..."

"No! No... I chose it," Seth said, reassuring them. "I ah... I flipped Temperance, though. Thought everyone knew by now, but ah... I guess the only two who would know are..."

"...Jared and Davin," Zale said, causing even Mark to look more alert at the revelation.

"Yeah, the night Jared... whatever happened to him, anyway. But I don't want to dwell on that. I know there's nothing that can truly be done about it; trust me, I spent way too much time in that library trying to find a way. But it's like they said, only time will help him now. But let's put aside the bad for now, and focus on the good. Today is a happy day. We need more of those lately, don't you think?"

"Yes, I suppose we do," Mark said, nodding. "Why are we here? Not that I'm not happy to see Dylann, but he was so adamant about us not coming back here too early that it completely skipped our minds to ask him later. Life, you know. Keeps you busy."

"Don't I know it," Seth said, rolling his eyes. "Anyway, I think you should talk to him about that. He's just outside the door now."

"How do you know?"

"Temperance daemon, duh," Seth said, sticking his tongue out playfully before opening the door for the larger daemon. "They're here, my liege."

"Mark! Zale!" Dylann said, smiling widely at the sight of them as he entered. "I'm glad you came! How have you been?"

"Well, bored mostly," Mark said, causing Zale to shoot him a look. "What? The bar's closed. We've just been hanging out around home for now."

"Not that we don't have any lives," Zale sighed. "It's just any time we think to go anywhere, we keep thinking about Jared. But ah, right. Sorry..."

"Well, I hope you can take your minds off your troubles for today at least. Spend a few days here, if you need to. Time is slower here, though not so much as when you were here last."

"Won't we just fall under your power again?" Zale said, though he couldn't help but feel that wasn't such a bad fate.

"Ah, right," Dylann said, focusing. A piece of parchment appeared upon the table, along with a quill and a jar of ink. "A contract, so that I'm not tempted again. Just to be safe, anyway. Take your time to read it."

"Well, there's not much here," Mark said, going over it with his half-lidded eyes. "This is pretty straightforward. Basically just says you'll return us to Earth within a week of your realm's time. If you don't, you forfeit your title and we return anyway."

"...We'll think about staying longer, but I don't want you to lose your power," Zale said, concerned. "I'll sign it but... make sure you follow it, okay? I'd feel horrible if..."

"It shouldn't be a problem. If he even thinks about it I'll jab him in the ribs," Seth laughed as he and Dylann shared a look of amusement. Looking back to them, they waited as the two merlions nodded and signed their names; as soon as the last of their signatures was written, the parchment along with quill and ink disappeared in a stream of bubbles.

"There, now you have nothing to worry about," Dylann said, smiling. "As for the ceremony, it's... well, it's something of a coronation really."

"...But you're already king," Zale said, confused. Mark, however, was smiling mischievously as he looked up at Dylann.

"Who's the lucky suitor?" Mark asked. "Someone's finally captured your heart, huh?"

"...Yeah, they have," Dylann said, nervously scratching his chin. He looked almost the same way he did in his human form with that habit, causing the godlike impression to falter a bit. "I'm really nervous but... well, it's the happiest day of our lives. I was hoping you two would act as temporary Seconds?"

"Start swimming boys," Seth laughed, before Zale and Mark shared a look.

"I did say temporary. It's just for the ceremony," Dylann said, gently nudging Seth. "You don't have to accept, but I would still be honored if you attended as some of my closest friends."

"Wait, is this a wedding?" Zale asked, still a bit confused. "Are you asking us to be your best men?"

"Sort of," Dylann said. "Though it's not exactly a 'marriage' in that sense and no legal court on Earth would recognize it. It is definitely more coronation than anything. They will rule with me, by my side, for as long as they wish."

"Still haven't told us who it is, though," Mark said, brushing his fingers through his long mane. "But why not? I've never been a best man before."

"Well, if Mark's okay with it then I am too," Zale said, shrugging. "And well, it's important to you Dylann. So yeah, why not?"

"I'm glad to hear it," Dylann said, beaming. Hell, he hadn't stopped smiling the whole time. Zale had to admit though, it was good to see him like this. "As for who it is, well... I want that to be a surprise for everyone. If I start telling people, even my friends, well... word might get out and the surprise would be ruined. Wouldn't it?"

"Well, it's your ceremony," Mark said, rising from where he was seated and drawing up to his full height. He bowed his head as he saluted. "How may we be of service?"

"Already starting to feel it... glad I drew up that contract, then," Dylann mused. "Wait here while Seth and I make preparations elsewhere. Some servants will be along to help you prepare, though don't be afraid to ask them for anything you need. I'll see you at the ceremony... and thank you. Both of you."

"It's no problem at all," Zale said, bowing his head as well. "We'll see you then. But I thought Seth would at least help us get ready?"

"I have so much to do still," Seth laughed, shaking his head. "Busy busy, always busy. Don't you remember how it used to be, Zale? Still, I'll be there with the rest of you, so don't worry too much about it. Kick back, well... flip back. Relax. It's not until some hours yet."

"Well, let us know if we can help somehow," Zale said, starting to feel the influence of the realm as well. He was beginning to feel glad he had signed that contract now. Who knows how he'd be feeling after a week, assuming he stayed that long? Still, he had a job and a life waiting for him at home. He wasn't about to give up on that, especially when their friends might need them later. Maybe someday he'd retire here, but... not yet.

"Nah, you only need to worry about the ceremony. Just allow us to pamper you in the meantime, yeah?" Seth chuckled. "It's all on the house, so to speak."

"It's as he said; you are our guests," Dylann added, before turning to leave. "Come, Seth. We have much to do."

"Yes, my liege," Seth said, eagerly swimming after him. He winked at them as he closed the doors, leaving the couple alone for the moment. Mark went to rest beside Zale as they waited, and after a minute or two Zale sighed.

"...How long do you think it'll be until-" Zale said, before moaning in delight as Mark began to kiss his neck. "Mark... stop..."

"Do you really want me to?" Mark asked, and Zale hesitated before shaking his head. "I thought so."

"What if we get caught?"

"Are we in high school now, or something?" Mark asked, laughing. "Let's just enjoy the moment. Who cares if anyone sees us. Besides, if I don't get thoughts of humility and self-control out of my mind right now, I might actually want to stay here forever."

"...Wouldn't want that," Zale said, ignoring the fact they had a fail-safe anyway. "Better make sure we ah, don't fall into that mindset again. Even though now you mention it, I kind of want to..."

Mark locked lips with him, and any feelings of duty and honor were replaced with his lust and love for Mark. It wasn't so much the realm influencing him as it was his own thoughts; he was naturally submissive to such authority, especially to one who was not unlike a god compared to his own mortality. But even with such a powerful urge, he already knew he wanted to be with Mark more than anything else.

"Hm? What's wrong?" Mark asked, as Zale pulled away thoughtfully.

"Oh, nothing. I was just wondering... do you think there will be cake?"

"Pfft, dork," Mark laughed, as Zale laughed with him. "Tell you what; if there isn't any cake at the ceremony, we'll get a big one for ourselves back on Earth. Deal?"

"Better be chocolate."

"Of course," Mark promised, holding up his finger. "But I get to choose the ice cream."
