#14 of Pokemon - To Catch Them All

Leo, explores the Pokemon mansion and challenges the Cinnabar Gym

After catching the Water Types I had missed while exploring, I began heading towards Cinnabar Island, however before I could even set off, my Rotom Phone began ringing. "You have a call from Professor Oak!" The message repeated until I answered. "Professor Oak?" I queried curious as to why he was calling me. "Leo, I hope I haven't caught you at a bad time." I shook my head before answering, "oh no Professor, I was just heading to Cinnabar Island for my seventh gym badge." Professor Oak sighed in relief.

"I hope you wouldn't mind taking a detour to Pewter City." I was curious, "Pewter City? What's at Pewter City?" I enquired and Professor Oak chuckled, "I recently had a chat with one of my research colleagues and one of the scientists at the museum has discovered an Old Amber. He's looking for a trainer to take the Old Amber to Cinnabar Island and restore it, then they can keep that Pokemon for themselves." That sure had my attention. "I'll definitely head on over to Pewter City then, thank you very much Professor." At that we ended the call and I brought out my Fearow.

"Fearow can you fly me to Pewter City please?" Feraow squawked his agreement and quickly flew me to Pewter City. When we arrived, I thanked Fearow and returned him to his Pokeball so he could recover some strength. I quickly found the Museum of Science and entered approaching the front desk. "Hello there young man, how may I be of assistance?" The secretary asked me. "Hello, I recently heard from Professor Oak that a colleague of yours had acquired a Old Amber and wanted someone to take it of their hands."

The secretaries eyes lit up in remembrance and understanding. "Please wait right here, I'll contact the lead scientist and have him bring the Old Amber to you." I sat down and waited nervously with anticipation wondering what the Pokemon restored from the fossil would look like. I wonder if Omastar and Kabutops would know off the Pokemon in question. My thoughts were interrupted when the lead scientist returned and was holding an amber like rock in his hands. I presumed that was the Old Amber.

"Hello, there young man, I heard you were hear for the Old Amber. If I may be so bold as to ask how you heard of this Old Amber we had acquired." I held up my Rotom phone. "I recently had a call from Professor Oak who wanted me to visit and get the Old Amber. Probably because I already have an Omastar and a Kabutops and have some experience with raising fossil Pokemon." The lead scientist was happy at hearing that news and happily handed over the Old Amber, wishing me luck on my journey and asking me to take good care of that fossil and the Pokemon when its restored.

"Come out Charizard!" Charizard appeared roaring his entrance. "Charizard could you fly me to Cinnabar Island?" I didn't even need to ask as Charizard swopped on over and picked me up before flying at top speed to Cinnabar Island. I had been slightly nervous being carried in his arms and not on his back, but Charizard kept me secured so there was no chance I would fall off.

When I reached Cinnabar Island I returned Charizard to his Pokeball and thanked him for carrying me all this way. Before heading over to the gym, I returned to the laboratory and was surprised when the head scientist appeared from one of the backrooms. "What a surprise to see you again! Do you have another fossil you'd like restored?" The head scientist asked and I nodded, "I just received an Old Amber from the Museum of Science in Pewter and came here to have it restored." The head scientist looked very intrigued, "an Old Amber you say? Now that is a rare find. Anyways please follow me, we'll have your fossil restored in no time."

The head scientist didn't need to remind me on what happens when fossils are restored, some could be angry or confused, while others might appear to be friendly and calm. When we arrived at the fossil restoration machine, I handed the scientist my Old Amber and watched as he commenced the restoration. "As I'm sure you recall, the restoration process will take some time, please come back in around an hour." I agreed and left to do some training with my newest captures knowing they were close to evolving.

First was Poliwag, who quickly evolved into a Poliwhirl. "Poliwhirl has been registered to your Pokedex. Polwihirl the Tadpole Pokemon, a Water Type. The spiral pattern on its belly subtly undulates. Staring at it gradually causes drowsiness." As I observed my new Pokemon, I did suddenly start yawning when I looked to deeply at the spiral pattern on Poliwhirl's belly. After doing some more training, Poliwhirl already desired his final evolution and I didn't see any need to deny him. So, I presented Poliwhirl with a Water Stone and he quickly evolved once more.

"Poliwrath has been registered to your Pokedex. Poliwrath the Tadpole Pokemon, a Water and Fighting Type. With its extremely tough muscles, it could keep swimming in the Pacific Ocean without resting." Seeing Poliwrath's new appearance definitely showed me his increased power. Seeing as we were near the ocean, he quickly dived in and began swimming around showing me his extreme speed. Not only speed though, he had extreme endurance as well. Little did I know Poliwrath would have been more than happy to ferry me across the ocean whenever I wanted.

Horsea was next and through some vigorous training Horsea has also managed to achieve his evolution too. "Seadra has been registered to your Pokedex. Seadra the Dragon Pokemon, a Water Type. Its spines provide protection. Its fins and bones are prized as traditional medicine ingredients." Seadra had one more evolution but that would require an extremely rare Dragon Scale not commonly found in Kanto but more widely available in the Johto Region. Currently as a Seadra, he appeared more confident and outgoing compared to his former personality as a Horsea.

Next was my Goldeen, he was fast and capable at battling from the moment he was caught, meaning it was of no surprise to me when he already began evolving. "Seaking has been registered to your Pokedex. Seaking the Goldfish Pokemon, a Water Type. To protect its family, it will fight with its drill-sharp horn. It lives in hollowed rocks in streams." Seaking showed himself to be a rather confident and powerful Pokemon even sparring with my Blastoise who toughened his horn strikes with his defensive shell. Going back to his Pokedex entry, Seaking considered his trainer to be his family and as such anybody Pokemon, or human who dared to attack his trainer would be brutally attacked in response.

Now with Dratini, that was a different story, Dratini was shy and preferred to me huddled around me. I guess it wasn't surprising as he was only in his first form. With lots of patience and time I had showed Dratini how to be more outgoing and confident and he showed those characteristics in battles against wild Pokemon at the shore of Cinnabar Island. Dratini showed me powerful moves as well. It definitely took much longer than the other Pokemon, but eventually Dratini evolved into a Dragonair. "Dragonair has been registered to your Pokedex. Dragonair the Dragon Pokemon a Dragon Type. If its body takes on an aura, the weather changes instantly. It is said to live in seas and lakes." Dragonair immediately hugged me with his slender body happy at achieving his evolution thanks to me his beloved trainer.

How time flew by though, I quickly headed back to the laboratory and was directed back to the fossil restoration machine and saw that the Old Amber had just finished restoring. "Leo, I'd like you to meet your newest Pokemon, this is Aerodactyl. I can safely say it is believed Aerodactyl was a vicious and dangerous Pokemon back in the past. A territorial and predatory Pokemon, it will be a challenge to raise and form a bond with this Pokemon."

I nodded in agreement and readied a Pokeball as Aerodactyl observed me as I slowly approached, "Aerodactyl, my name is Leo. I know this is probably very confusing but I'd like to be your friend and show you that this era isn't all that different to your former era." At that Aerodactyl flew towards me and I closed my eyes nervously before I felt the Pokeball click open and close. Opening my eyes, I saw the Pokeball, shake once, twice and three times before the capture was confirmed. "Aerodactyl has been registered to your Pokedex. Aerodactyl the Fossil Pokemon a Rock and Flying Type. Its a Pokemon that roamed the skies in the dinosaur era. Its teeth are like saw blades."

At that I thanked the scientists and left the building to start making a strong bond with my Aerodactyl. "Come out Aerodactyl!" Aerodactyl appeared screeching loudly before realising that it was only me and nobody else. Stopping Aerodactyl kneeled down to my level before observing me with curiosity. "Its very nice to meet you Aerodactyl. I hope that we can become good friends." Aerodactyl still regarded me with such a fond look I was confused at. "Oh, I also have some other Pokemon that may have been in the same era as you. Come on out Kabutops and Omanyte." The other fossils appeared looking at me before turning around and paling when they saw Aerodactyl.

Omanyte and Kabutops glared at the Aerodactyl, who looked surprised seeing Pokemon from its former era. In the past it seemed as though Aerodactyl had preyed on both Omanyte and Kabutops and that must be why they regarded Aerodactyl with such discontent. Kabutops and Omanyte turned to me once again, searching for some reassurance I assumed. "Kabutops and Omanyte. I understand that in the past you two had a poor relationship with Aerodactyl. In this era however, we have food specifically for Pokemon, meaning Aerodactyl won't ever ben hungry enough to want to eat you. I promise that you'll be safe with me."

It seemed as though those words convinced Omanyte and Kabutops that they were safe and they hugged me as best as they could, however, this apparently inspired some jealousy from Aerodactyl, who wanted a piece of the action and so pushed through and wrapped his powerful rock like wings around me in his version of a hug. I felt as though Aerodactyl was already a Pokemon that had adapted to the new era much quicker than I had anticipated.

I returned the fossils to their Pokeballs and instead explored the remainder of Cinnabar Island. I headed on over to the Pokemon mansion and explored it finding all sorts of Pokemon I hadn't found before. The first one I found was a Grimer and I decided to battle it. "Come out Alakazam!" Alakazam appeared already knowing what he needed to do. "Use Psychic!" Alakazam's Psychic easily weakened Grimer enough for me to catch it. "Grimer has been registered to your Pokedex. Grimer the Sludge Pokemon, a Poison Type. It was born when sludge in a dirty stream was exposed to the moons x-rays. It appears among filth." Grimer seemed saddened by its negative Pokedex entry but quickly cheered up when I reminded him that he was just as lovely as any other Pokemon I'd caught.

Next was finding a Koffing, similar to Grimer, except Koffing could fly around the mansion faster than Grimer could move. "Mr. Mime I need your help." Mr. Mime appeared grinning at the distracted Koffing. "Use Psychic!" Once more as with Alakazam earlier, Psychic weakened Koffing enough for me to throw a Pokeball and catch it. "Koffing has been registered to your Pokedex. Koffing the Poison Gas Pokemon, a Poison Type. It adores polluted air. Some claim that Koffing used to be more plentiful in the Galar region than they are now." Koffing was much like Grimer, disappointed at such a negative portrayal in the Pokedex but soon understood that I thought differently.

I was surprised at the how the mansion seemed to be so deteriorated as if nobody had maintained the mansion. There were holes in the floor and ceiling all around. On the second floor, I was challenged by a Burglar who sent out a Rapidash, but I sent out my Poliwrath and had him use Hydro Pump to defeat Rapidash. Moving on I was surprised when I encountered a Magmar in this abandoned mansion and so decided to catch it. "Golem come on out!" Golem appeared glaring at the Magmar, who immediately attacked, using a powerful Flamethrower, though against Golem the move had barely any effect. "Golem, use Stone Edge!" Golem's Stone Edge was super effective and weakened Magmar enough for me to throw a Pokeball. I watched as it shook once, twice, three times before the capture was confirmed.

"Magmar has been registered to your Pokedex. Magmar the Spitfire Pokemon a Fire Type. It was born in the crater of a volcano. Its body is covered in flames that shimmer like the sun." Magmar showed me that he was a confident but also a cocky Pokemon. When we battled together, he always grinned and tried to show off when he was fighting for me. Sometimes it almost put him at a disadvantage because he got distracted. Still he was a kind hearted Pokemon who got along well with all my Fire Type Pokemon.

I was surprised to be challenged once more by a coach trainer who sent out a Graveler and I sent out my Vaporeon, whose Hydro Pump defeated Graveler. The next Pokemon sent out was a Dugtrio and I continued battling with Vaporeon and another Hydro Pump was powerful enough to defeat Dugtrio too. The final Pokemon sent out was a Poliwrath and I substituted for my Raichu whose Thunderbolt knocked Poliwrath out with a super effective hit. After winning that battle, I explored the mansion further and was surprised when I spotted a Ditto.

"Come out Machamp!" Machamp appeared flexing his arms before staring down the Ditto. Ditto grinned though using Transform to become Machamp too. My Machamp grinned at the apparent challenge. "Use Strength!" Machamp threw the other Machamp down to the ground and it surprised me when the transformed Ditto couldn't get back up. I threw a Pokeball anyways and watched as it shook once, twice, three times before the capture was confirmed. "Ditto has been registered to your Pokedex. Ditto the Transform Pokemon a Normal Type. It has the ability to reconstitute its entire cellular structure to transform into whatever it sees." Ditto was a unique Pokemon to train that's for sure. I had to understand what my opponents moves were to then be able to battle effectively.

Another Burglar challenged me to a battle with a Magmar and I sent out my Sandslash and had him use Bulldoze to defeat Magmar. The second Pokemon sent out was a Muk the evolved form of my Grimer but I continued battling with my Sandslash and a second Bulldoze proved to be enough to defeat Muk. Exploring further I was challenged by a scientist who sent out a Weezing and I sent out my Hypno, whose Psychic defeated Weezing. His second Pokemon was a Magneton who I substituted for my Hitmonchan who I had use Close Combat defeating Magneton. The final Pokemon sent out was a Magmar and I substituted for my Golduck and had him use Hydro Pump defeating Magmar.

An Ace Trainer then challenged me and first sent out a Kingler while I sent out my Venusaur and had him unleash a powerful Seed Bomb defeating Kingler. The second Pokemon sent out was a Primeape and I substituted for my Charizard and had him use an Air Slash knocking Primeape out. Another scientist then challenged me, his first Pokemon being an Electrode and I sent out my Dugtrio and had him use Bulldoze knocking Electrode out. His second Pokemon was a Muk and I had Dugtrio use another Bulldoze defeating Muk.

Continuing on I was challenged by another Burglar, who sent out a Koffing and I sent out my Slowbro and had him use Psychic defeating Koffing. A second Koffing was defeated the same way. This was repeated with the third one too. The final Pokemon was a Weezing and I had Slowbro use another Psychic defeating Weezing too. A scientiist then challenged me with an Electabuzz and I sent out my Nidoking having him use Earthquake defeating Electabuzz. After ensuring I had caught every pokemon available and battled every trainer I left the mansion and headed to the gym.

Before I entered though, I had done some training with the new Pokemon I'd caught. Magmar couldn't evolve for a long time yet, but that didn't bother me. In his current form he was shown to be a kind yet powerful Pokemon. Ditto got along conveniently well with Gengar both apparently had a mischievous personality and both worked together to try and startle me. Meanwhile both Koffing and Grimer had actually already evolved. First was Grimer into Muk. "Muk has been registered to your Pokedex. Muk the Sludge Pokemon a Poison Type. A toxic fluid seeps from its body. The fluid kills plants and tress immediately upon contact." Muk had been remarkably careful around me avoiding my touches where he could but he did enjoy some attention.

Next was Koffing who evolved into Weezing. "Weezing has been registered to your Pokedex. Weezing the Poison Gas Pokemon a Poison Type. It grows by feeding on gases released by garbage. Though very rare, triplets have been found." Weezing was much like Muk, since both were Poison Types and could be dangerous to humans if they got too close. However, Weezing was extremely careful around his beloved trainer and while he did hate to keep his distance from his trainer he still enjoyed receiving attention from his trainer when it was safe to do so.

When I entered the gym I was surprised at how different it was in the years that had gone by. Previously I had heard the gym was in a volcano itself, but now it seemed to have been moved slightly. "Welcome to the Cinnabar Island Gym, my name is Blaine, the gym leader. I am the fiery hot quiz master who enjoys a blazing hot battle. I hope you can deliver challenger." I agreed and the referee came over to explain the rules. "This is a three on three battle, if one sides Pokemon are all unable to battle then the opposing trainer will be declared the winner."

At that the referee held his flags up, "trainers please send out your Pokemon." At that I sent out my Kabutops and Blaine sent out his Rapidash. "Battle begin!" The referee delcared and Blaine immediately went on the offensive. "Rapidash use Flamethrower!" Rapidash breathed out a powerful plume of fire that surged towards Kabutops. Even if Kabutops was a Rock and Water Type, this attack seemed on a different level than most. "Kabutops, use Hydro Pump!" Kabutops countered using Hydro Pump.

The two colliding moves created a smokescreen of steam which covered the battlefield. "Rapidash once you know where Kabutops is use Solar Beam!" That surprised me, but at the same time it shouldn't have. Of course Blaine would have taught his Pokemon moves to deal with his weaknesses. From the steam a Solar Beam was fired straight at Kabutops who looked stunned before he regained his nerve. "Dodge that then use Liquidation right where the Solar Beam came from." Kabutops sidestepped the Solar Beam and charged toward Rapidash who galloped right over Kabutops.

"Above you use Ancient Power Kabutops!" Kabutops immediately stopped and summoned some ancient rocks before throwing them right at the shocked Rpidash who tried to dodge but in mid air it wasn't possible. After being struck by the rocks, Rapidash attempted to stand up on shaky legs, but soon collapsed. "Rapidash is unable to battle, Kabutops is the winner!"

Blaine returned his Rapidash and I returned my Kabutops too. "Kabutops return for now, you battled brilliantly, take a break I might need you later." Kabutops nodded and returned to his Pokeball before I grabbed my next choice. "Omastar your up next." Omastar appeared glaring at Blaine who sent out his next Pokemon. "Ninetales I need your assistance!" Upon Ninetales descending on the battlefield the arena got more intense. "Ninetales must have the ability drought, which will increase the power Fire moves and decrease the power of Water moves. I'll need to rely on other super effective moves instead and wait the sun out."

"Ninetales use Solar Beam!" That was a given, "Omastar dodge that then use Ancient Power!" Omastar barely managed to avoid Solar Beam, but Ninetales didn't need to dodge Ancient Power countering with a powered up Flamethrower easily destroying Ancient Power. "Ancient Power once more!" Omastar looked confused knowing the move wouldn't work but upon seeing my reassured look he knew I had a plan and as such. Omastar knew that this would end in his victory. "The same move again? Use Flamethrower!" Ninetales once more countered using Flamethrower.

This was repeated for just long enough and surprisingly Blaine didn't realise what my true intention was, which was to draw out the sun and allow my Omastar to finish the battle with his newest move. When the sun eventually cleared, I took advantage. "Omastar use Surf!" Omastar created a huge wave of water which slammed into Ninetales immediately knocking it out. "Ninetales is unable to battle, Omastar is the winner!" Once more me and Blaine returned out Pokemon with me deciding on my final Pokemon.

"You've definitely shown you have what it takes to be a powerful trainer, but can you handle the hottest Pokemon I own, come out my Magmar!" A Magmar appeared glaring in my direction, it was exuding confidence and heat. This Magmar was clearly on a different level than the other Pokemon Blaine had but I remained confident. "Your up Aerodactyl!" Aerodactyl appeared flying on the battlefield screeching loudly at Magmar making it cover its ears thanks to the horrible sound. "Aerodactyl use Stone Edge!" Aerodactyl created stone pillars which struck Magmar for massive damage. "Magmar use Thunder Punch!" Now that was a surprise as Magmar shook of the damage from Stone Edge and jumped to strike Aerodactyl with a super effective Thunder Punch.

"Aerodactyl, counter that with Dragon Breath!" Thankfully, I had the foresight to teach Aerodactyl some long range moves so that he would be able to face off against all sorts of opponents. The Dragon Breath countered Magmar and defeated Magnar with relative ease. It seemed as though Aerodactyl was stronger than I had anticipated. "Magmar is unable to battle, the winner is Aerodactyl and that means the winner of this match is Leo from Viridian City." At that Aerodactyl swopped around and gave me a powerful hug squawking loudly in my ears to show his happiness and excitement.

Blaine returned his Magmar to his Pokeball before approaching me. "Congratulations, you've earned this, its the Volcano Badge!" At that I placed the badge in my badge case and thanked Blaine for such a good battle. I was glad that I could battle with all my fossil Pokemon and give them a chance to shine on the battlefield.
