Third Vore of Christmas

Rat

The flames danced about the rocks walls as the brown rat poked the fire with a stick, Lanto didn't know what time of day it was anymore or in fact what day it was since he ventured into this dungeon. As the dark black eyes reflected the flames as the rat investigated them, his mind wandered back to the time when he was first outside the massive doors in full adventure gear, his weapons and his entire body glowed with enthusiasm. And yet now, while he sat there with a dead wooden stick in hand, prodding away to keep the fire alive and the cold at bay, the rodent looked dark, wiser but less bright as he was. Lanto looked down at his dirty paws, long gone where the softness in his skin, cuts and scars lived there now from the many battles he had to fight to survive this long from the many different monsters that lived down here and still there was no treasure to be found, nothing.

With a sigh, Lanto looked about the room that he was in now, the dead spider lay nearby with the broken blade of the sword still embedded in the underside of the body, the handle laid on the floor a few paces away from the massive body, his last weapon, the rodent frowned, he would have to sneak from now on and find another weapon. Slowly, the rat pushed himself up from the floor and dusted himself off, an act that wasn't necessary, but he still hadn't managed to get out of the ritual. With some old rags, the rodent reached into his backpack and pulled out a small container, then poured oil onto the rag, then he placed all but the made torch back into the bag, slung it about his shoulder, then lit the rag as it flared up. Then the rodent looked at the fire in the room and walked away towards the dark tunnel that he had not gone down before.

As cold as the inner tunnels of the dungeon was, the torch gave off some heat for the rodent as he carefully made his way forwards down the steps. Lanto hadn't found a single set of stairs that went up ever since he entered this depressing place, it was just rooms of danger followed by sinking further into the ground. His hand brushed over the cold stone wall, carved out by rough instruments in the past, the rat guessed as only the sound of his breathing, the flames that burnt at the oil and rags. And the sound of his foot paws that came down onto the cold stone floor, his nerves could sense every rough dip and bump in the floor. When he reached the bottom step, the rodent paused as he looked about the corridor in front of him, various cut outs were in the wall and the rodent smiled as he walked slowly forwards and saw various loosely wrapped dead bodies inside each hole. This is where he would find a weapon, perhaps? The rat slowly investigated each hole as the stench of death had long since vanished from these bodies, which were mostly bone now, all the old flesh had rotted away as the rodent looked at the weird, shaped skulls. None of those that lived today knew who they were or what they were, apart from calling them ball heads, they were just so round, no snouts at all. The rat also wondered how anything could even be alive once without even a tail, but they did have good treasure that was buried within them in these dungeons, or he would've turned and went back a long time ago to get back outside. The male had spent far too much time of investment in this venture to go back now.

On the fifth enclave the rat slowly walked past and then stopped as Lanto took a few steps back, something had caught his eye as he saw the glint that shone out brightly from the light of his torch and there it was, the very first treasure, nestled loosely on the finger of the dead corpse. The rat reached out with his own long fingers and slowly, the rodent felt the cold metal of the gold ring and picked it up as the finger broke off, then slipped from the ring as it hit the stone and shattered into small pieces. The rodent looked at the ring with a big smile on his face, then slipped it into his backpack. It was a start, a very small start but now he was able to come out of this with something at least. The rat carried on down the narrow way, checking each dead body along the way. He found a sword at least, the rat taking that away, it was short, but a weapon was a weapon and the male felt safer having found it, in fact he felt less naked than when he killed that massive spider. Everything in this place wanted to kill him, he knew that. He was the only living thing about and for that he was food for these creatures.

Ahead he could see the line of dead bodies finish and that the hallway had only a short way before it ended. The rat could see the darkness ahead of him but as he slowly made his way, grabbing the various bits and pieces of jewellery, rings, necklaces, a golden tooth or two, the rat finally left the narrow passage and stood right there at the entrance to the next big room. Only his foot claws were inside the room as the rodent looked about in the dim light, various blue, green and red glowing mushrooms gave off a soft hue in the room, it was dull, but it was there. The rat lifted his snout up and looked up as he saw the room light up a bit more, his eyes adjusting and the two massive blue mushrooms that gave off more of a blue tint to the cavern. Slowly, the rat stepped into the new room and looked about, the whole place felt colder, wetter as his eyes caught the sight of the motionless black pool of water that only reflected the light emitting fungus in the cavern. As much as he tried, the male rat couldn't see to the other side of the cavern, and he sighed heavily. He would have to go exploring to find another way out to venture further into the dungeon or turn back with the few trinkets he currently had.

And there he saw it, in the middle of the lake, the massive chest that rested on the rocks and as he walked up to the edge of the rock, the water spread out before him, the sparkle from the various jewels and all could be seen and the rat smiled at the sight, this was it, the pay for all the time he had been down here, the sacrifices he had to make. The rodent looked down at himself, the rat had clearly lost weight and he was hungry. The torch continued to billow wisps of smoke as he looked down at the black water and frowned, it offered nothing underneath the surface. Slowly, the rat took a step back, then another before he turned around and looked about the rest of the cavern, the rodent frowned as he searched each part of the rock as he turned his head back to where the chest was with a thoughtful look. 'How did they get that there?' Lanto thought to himself as he sat down onto a rock and placed the torch down beside him as he continued to ponder the situation.

With a sigh, the rat pulled his backpack off from his shoulders and then slowly pulled several items out as he decided to make one last campfire and would sleep on the matter. With a few last bits of wood, the rodent built the fireplace and then used the torch to light the fire up as it brought extra light into the cavern. Lanto unrolled the mat as he laid it nearby the fireplace and slowly, he brought out the blanket and undressed, the rodent placing what remained of his clothing to the side and laid down on the mat as he looked up to the ceiling, the blanket over the top of him as he watched the light from the mushrooms dance about with the flickers of the fire that was a short distance from him. The rodent turned his head to the side away from the fire and looked at the water with the chest and then he closed his eyes, he needed sleep, being exhausted was not a good condition to come up with a plan.

The hours passed as the rodent tossed and turned, the rat had started to snore when he rolled back onto his back again as the sound of his loud snoring rang out throughout the cavern. The mushrooms shimmered as one of the mushrooms exploded as tiny spores floated high above the ceiling, slowly spinning about as they started to fall downwards, then another large mushroom exploded as the cavern got darker, the air becoming thick with spores from above as they started to float down towards the ground. Several of the spores fizzled as they reached the flames of the campfire, the rest landed onto the rock floor, but it was those that landed onto the rodent itself, the spores slowly settling into the fur as a few drifted into the open maw of the rodent and the rat coughed and turned over quickly, the blanket sliding off the male rat as more of the spores landed on top. Slowly the spores began to dig into the skin as they settled on top of the rodent, their roots digging into the warm body until slowly the rat himself had a light covering of spores that shimmering blue all over.

By the time Lanto woke back up again, he was groggy, the mind just couldn't clear as the rat laid there on the ground. Slowly he opened his eyes and saw that the orange glow of the fire and torch had long since gone, only the faint glow of the fungus in the cavern gave the glow and the rodent tried to move again but panicked when he couldn't move. Slowly he opened his eyes as he looked at tiny mushrooms so close to his vision, then with some force, the rat moved his head a bit and looked down his body, then the sheer coldness went through his brain, his entire body had mushrooms all over it, they were everywhere, on his chest, the belly, his cock and balls, his arms, the legs and his hands and feet were covered in the mushrooms, the fur had mostly melted away leaving just his skin. Lanto moved his tongue inside his mouth and felt the mushrooms inside there as well, his tongue came out as he gurgled, the rat looked at his long fat tongue now, full of mushrooms and he gagged, the panic came to him as the rodent forced himself up to sit on the ground, his hands came to touch his face but it was impossible to feel anything as the fungus got in the way. Then slowly he saw the mist start to cover his vision again as his mind wandered. Lanto fought as he brought his mind back again, the amount of energy he was using to keep concentration was making his head hurt. There in front of him was the cold black water and the rat slowly forced himself to get near to it, crawling now as he heard the wet squelch of the mushrooms slip and slide as he fumbled about on the ground.

Eventually he got to the edge as the rodent dipped his hand into the cold freezing water, scooping some of it up and then he drank, the water tasted like mushrooms, and he gagged but then a great sensation of first came to him and he dunked his head into the deep black water and started to gulp the freezing liquid into his body. Lanto just kept on drinking as he felt his body crave more of the liquid and he slowly crawled more into the cold water as his body sunk under. Lanto didn't even feel cold as he submerged. Slowly the rat came back up again, the entire body of his was now wet and slimy as he slowly crawled back to the edge of the lake and then laid down on the wet stone floor and closed his eyes once more, the mist in his mind slowly enveloped him completely as he passed out. When Lanto came back around again, this time he couldn't clear his mind, the vision in his eyes remained clouded as the fungus had started to grow on each eyeball, the rat just laid there as more mushrooms were seen than his body, even the sensation of feeling had gone now. His hand had slipped into the water as it lay motionless, the fungus had opened some of the skin to allow water to seep into the body. All the fungus had grown bigger, and the rodent slowly slipped unconscious again back into darkness.

The rat didn't wake up again, not in the sense of being known to be awake, the rat was more fungus than rodent now, Lanto was somewhere inside the colony of fungus but he was drowning under the weight of the rest of the spores that had grown all over him, deep within him, their roots had infected his brain, spores had formed links in the tissue, the blood within his veins had changed to water and a oily substance carrying substance to the rest of the fungus that had taken over. Inside of his head, the rat could see the huge balloon shaped tops of the mushrooms starting to crush him as he cried out in pain, shock, and terror. His hands tried to push them away, but they kept on pressing against him, then he vanished as his body disappeared, the last remaining inkling of the male that was before had gone. Over the next hours, days, weeks, months, the shape of the rodent vanished as the form of another mushroom formed, it shimmered a light brown colour of light as it throbbed now and again, the edge of the stalk rippled the water as the small waves moved across the black lake as they lapped onto the shore where the chest remained unclaimed To the entrance to the cavern, a faint glow started to show as a form came into view, a mole who looked about the cavern with torch in hand as he walked over to where the lake was and as he stood next to the large brown mushroom, the male studied the chest on the other side, unknowing that a tiny spore had left the underside of the mushroom and floated to where the exposed arm was and sank into the black fur.
