#11 of Pokemon - To Catch Them All

Leo visits the Seafoam Islands and restores some fossils.

When I entered the Seafoam Islands I was surprised at the sudden change in temperature. Outside it was lovely and warm, but inside this cave it was freezing. Ice covered the cave everywhere, the ground and ceiling too. Not surprisingly Ice Type Pokemon lived in this cave and seemed unaffected by the cold. I myself preferred the warmth of the outside but knew I had to explore the cave to find every new Pokemon and catch them. "Come on out Arcanine!" Arcanine appeared growling appearing unfazed my the heat because he was a Fire Type.

"Arcanine, can you help me explore the cave, since your a Fire Type and well it's freezing here" I said holding my arms close to my chest really wishing I had done some more preparation. If I had known the Seafoam Islands were freezing, I would have bought a warm coat to keep me warm. However, Arcanine happily agreed and gestured for me to climb aboard him. Much like I had done with Gyarados on the ocean before, Arcanine carried me through out the cave. The warmth he exuded was heavenly.

Exploring through the cave I came across a Slowpoke slowly meandering through the cave, he seemed lost and had a vacant expression on his face. "Come on out Raichu!" Raichu appeared sparking before he realised that he was in a cold environment. "Use Thunderbolt" Thunderbolt was super effective and weakened Slowpoke to the point where I could catch him. "Slowpoke has been registered to your Pokedex. Slowpoke the Dopey Pokemon, a Water and Psychic Type. Although slow, it is skilled at fishing with its tail. It does not feel pain if its tail is bitten." I cheered thanking Raichu before returning him and thanking him for braving the cold for me.

Continuing through the cave I spotted a Jynx, walking through the cave, unfazed by the cold. Aprraoching Jynx turned and faced us, before blowing Arcanine a kiss which I noticed was actually Lovely Kiss. Before I could even get Arcanine to dodge, he succumbed to the effects and slept soundly. Getting of Arcanine I sent out my Charizard who noticed the sleeping Arcanine and looked at me confused as if wondering what had even happened. I shrugged but then pointed at Jynx. "Jynx used Lovely kiss and put Arcanine to sleep, you need to make sure you don't get put too sleep either okay?"

Charizard roared his agreement before flying straight towards Jynx who looked confident blowing a Lovely Kiss right to Charizard. "Use Flamethrower to counter it!" Flamethrower destroyed Lovely Kiss and raced towards Jynx. Seeing the approaching Flamethrower, Jynx used Ice Beam and attempted to counter the attack. The two moves collided but Flamethrower soon overpowered the Ice Beam and struck Jynx for super effective damage.

"Pokeball go!" I threw the Pokeball and watched as it shook once, twice, three times before the capture was confirmed. "Jynx has been registered to your Pokedex. Jynx the Human Shape Pokemon a Ice and Psychic Type. The Jynx of Galar often have beautiful and delicate voices. Some of these Pokemon have even gathered a fan base." I guess it was surprising to hear that a Pokemon could gather a fan base, but I guess everybody has their own favourite Pokemon and want to show people why they believe a specific Pokemon is their favourite.

I thanked Charizard, returning him to his Pokeball before grabbing an awakening and waking Arcanine up. When Arcanine woke up he looked around confused and was probably wondering where Jynx was. "I caught Jynx" I said to the now awake Arcanine to smiled before looking at me embarrassed he had been so easily defeated.

"Don't be too hard on yourself, I had no idea Jynx was going to use Lovely Kiss and put you to sleep. The fault lies on me and not you." Arcanine disagreed trying to convince me if was his fault and his alone. He probably would have wanted to argue with me all day but in the end we continued on, Arcanine continuing to carry me through the cave as I searched for any more Pokemon.

What was probably the most surprising Pokemon which inhabited the cave was the Zubat family. Those Pokemon were part Flying Type and I would have assumed that they would have been incapable of living in such a cold environment. I guess that showed how resilient and powerful those Pokemon were.

Eventually I came across the first Pokemon trainer inside the Seafoam Islands and they were a coach trainer who first sent out a Jolteon and I sent out my Sandslash. Sandslash narrowly avoided a Double Kick from Jolteon before unleashing a super effective Bulldoze defeating Jolteon. The second Pokemon sent out was a Vaporeon and I substituted instead for my Venusaur. Venusaur didn't appreciate the cold much like myself, but understood that he had to overcome his own weakness and what better place to do so than right now. Venusaur overpowered Vaporeon which Seed Bomb, before Vaporeon could use Acid Armor and block the attack. The final Pokemon sent out was a Flareon and I substituted once again for my Blastoise, who didn't really mind the cold. Blastoise finished the battle with his Water Pulse winning me the battle.

Before I could continue onwards I was surprised to come across a Seel inside the cave where there was no visible water around. I understood that Seel might be able to handle the cold but was still surprised that Seel lived here. "Come on out Vileplume!" Vileplume appeared, ignoring the cold for the moment. "Use Giga Drain!" The Seel had no time to react before his energy had been completely drained.

I threw a Pokeball and watched as it shook, once, twice, three times before the capture was confirmed. "Seel has been registered to your Pokedex. Seel the Sea Lion Pokemon a Water Type. This Pokemon lives on icebergs. It uses the sharp point on its head to break up ice as it swims in the sea." I checked my Rotom Phone and was happy to see that I had caught all the Pokemon I wanted for the moment.

Now I was aware that Slowpoke had two possible evolutionary routes, one would be evolving into a Slowbro, but a second would be trading a Slowpoke and evolving it into a Slowking but since they weren't commonly around here, I decided to wait until I explored the Johto region. I had begun to do some training with the Pokemon I had caught in the cave and was glad to know that we all worked well with one another. Jynx and I had a good strategy, Jynx would put opponents to sleep and then do powerful attacks to defeat them while they were asleep and unable to attack.

Seel, surprised me when after only a few battles, none of which seemed to challenging started to evolve. "Dewgong has been registered to your Pokedex. Dewgong the Sea Lion Pokemon a Water and Ice Type Pokemon. In snow, the pure white coat covering its body obscures it from predators." When looking at the newly evolved Dewgong I did see how its colouration did allow it to blend in with its environment. Dewgong seemed rather happy at already evolving and seemed to thank me extensively for allowing it to reach its final evolved form. Even though I hadn't really done all that much to help it. In all likelihood it would have evolved on its own soon enough.

Finally training in Slowpoke was different, I had to take a different approach. Firstly, people assumed that because Slowpoke was slow and looked dopey that it was either a slow Pokemon or a lazy Pokemon, perhaps even both. I however, thought differently, Slowpoke showed me he was a powerful Pokemon and followed my instructions perfectly. He definitely seemed to respect me as a trainer and his newfound friend, who treated him as such.

Perhaps it shouldn't of surprised me when Slowpoke began evolving much like Seel had before him. "Slowbro has been registered to your Pokedex. Slowbro the Hermit Crab Pokemon a Water and Psychic Type. Though usually dim-witted, it seems to become inspired if the Shellder on its tail bites down." I was surprised to notice that Slowbro now had a Shellder on its tail. Honestly I hadn't even seen a Shellder anywhere near Slowpoke when he began evolving. The sudden appearance of a Shellder was just a mind boggling moment but I weighed down the confusion for the moment.

After doing some more exploration I was surprised when I came across a massive lake inside the island. Obviously Arcanine couldn't come with me, so I returned him much to his apparent disappointment. I did attempt to reassure him that the moment I returned to dry land I would bring him back out to help me warm up much to his apparent happiness as he lunged at me licking my face repeatedly.

"Come on out Dewgong!" Dewgong was my choice for exploring the water, as Gyarados and Tentacruel were slightly to large for such an enclosed space. Dewgong however, was small enough to navigate the area effectively, but also large enough to carry me across the lake. Being an Ice Type, the downside was he was cold as well, but I didn't want to complain and make Dewgong feel bad. He was already doing a great job in helping me.

Exploring the lake I was surprised when Dewgong stopped, before showing me why he stopped. Dewgong had spotted a Shellder staring right at the Pokemon and trainer. I wasn't too surprised as apparently a Shellder had latched onto Slowbro and they were now two Pokemon in one. Pushing my confusion aside, I bought out Staryu to battle. "Come out Staryu!" Staryu appeared spinning rapidly, apparently unfazed by the cold lake. "Staryu use Psychic!" Using it's Psychic abilities, Staryu managed to throw Shellder down but it didn't seem to weaken Shellder as much as I would have wanted but I didn't mind. Shellder then fired back, using Aurora Beam which darted straight towards Staryu.

"Staryu use Light Screen!" A screen surrounded Staryu protecting it against the Aurora Beam, before he spun around once more signalling to me to give it a command. "Use another Psychic!" Once more Psychic landed and Shellder seemed to be running on fumes now. "Pokeball go!" I watched as the Pokeball shook once, twice, three times before the capture was confirmed. "Shellder has been registered to your Pokedex. Shellder the Bivalve Pokemon a Water Type. Its hard shell repels any kind of attack. It is vulnerable only when its shell is open." I thanked Staryu for its help and returned him before healing Shellder as well.

Dewgong continued to swim me across the lake as I spotted all sorts of Water Pokemon and even the occasional Zubat or Golbat flying across the tops of the cave. When I reached dry land I returned Dewgong thanking him for helping me across the lake and swapped in Arcanine, who carried me on his back. The cave seemed to thin out and I was surprised when I came across what looked to be a nest of some Pokemon.

The only evidence of what Pokemon it could have been was a blue feather, it looked unassuming but when I felt it, it was cold as ice. I didn't know for certain but my mind kept telling me this could be the home of the legendary Pokemon Articuno. Recording the feather and image on my Rotom Phone to remember the area in case one day when I'm much stronger and experienced I'll come back and try and catch even Articuno a legendary Pokemon.

For now though, I had explored the entirety of the Seafoam Islands and caught the Pokemon I needed, even evolving a few of them as well. I was definitely ecstatic at learning that Articuno might inhabit the Seafoam Islands, but that was pure speculation. At that I left the cave and entered on Route 20 before I was challenged by a camper, who sent out a Marowak and I decided to send out Jynx for our first battle together against a trainer and not a wild Pokemon. Jynx's Ice Beam easily defeated Marowak and the next Pokemon sent out was a Gloom and I had Jynx once again use Ice Beam defeating Gloom. The final Pokemon sent out was a Wigglytuff and I sent out my Snorlax. A couple of Body Slams allowed Snorlax to defeat Wigglytuff.

Now that I was back on the ocean, I sent out Gyarados once more and asked if he wouldn't mind ferrying me across the ocean. Not too my surprise he accepted and we journeyed across the ocean. Almost immediately I was challenged by a beauty who sent out a Slowbro and I sent out my own Slowbro. It was a challenging battle, but with a superior strategy, I had my Slowbro use Yawn and put the opponents Slowbro to sleep. This then allowed Slowbro to use Psychic repeatedly allowing him to win the battle. It could have been easier, but being in the ocean, water Pokemon were my main option for battling really.

A small island, was a surprising place to be challenged by a bird keeper of all people. But I accepted the challenge as they sent out a Fearow and I sent out Lapras. Lapras used Ice Beam and defeated Fearow with a single move. The next Pokemon sent out was a Dodrio which would be too fast for Lapras on land, so I substituted for my own Fearow. My Fearow outmanoeuvred his Dodrio and landed a powerful Drill Peck knocking Dodrio out. The final Pokemon was a Pidgeot and I substituted for my Raichu who used Thunderbolt winning the battle.

The next opponent was a swimmer who sent out a Starmie and I had my Gyarados use Bite which was super effective knocking Starmie out. The next Pokemon sent out was a Kingler and I substituted for my Slowbro who used Psychic knocking Kingler out. The final Pokemon sent out was a Tentacruel and I substituted once more for my Lapras and had him unleash a powerful Ice Beam defeating Tentacruel. On another patch of land a camper challenged me with a Jolteon and I sent out my Dugtrio and had him use Bulldoze to defeat Jolteon.

Back in the ocean once more I was challenged by a beauty who sent out a Cloyster and I sent out Kingler and had him use a couple of Slams to defeat Cloyster. A second beauty then challenged me with a Seaking and I sent out my Blastoise who defeated Seaking with a Skull Bash. The second Pokemon sent out was a Jynx and I substituted for my Charizard. From the air Charizard unleashed a super effective Flamethrower defeating Jynx.

On another small island I was challenged by an ace trainer who sent out a Golem and I sent out Venusaur, who used a super effective Seed Bomb defeating Golem. The second Pokemon sent out was a Pinsir and I substituted for my Graveler and had him use Rock Tomb which defeated Pinsir. At that I arrived in Cinnabar Island and immediately headed to the Pokemon Centre and healed my Pokemon before that I did make sure to thank Gyarados for ferrying me across the ocean, it must have tired him out. Gyarados however boasted his strength, knowing that I barely weighed anything in comparison to him.

After my Pokemon were healed, I didn't head to the gym, I wanted to go to the Pokemon Laboratory as I had heard they would be able to restore fossils and I currently had a Helix Fossil and a Dome Fossil which I was eager to restore. Entering the laboratory, I was surprised at how empty it was, maybe the scientists were all somewhere further inside. Thankfully they had a reception area and I spoke with the receptionist. "Excuse me, is it possible for me to restore my fossils here?" I questioned the receptionist who smiled. "Yes, you can restore fossils here at the lab, please wait a moment. I will call over the head scientist and he will be able to restore your fossils for you." I thanked her and heard as she made the phone call.

Almost immediately, a scientist headed from a back room and headed over in my direction, "hello young man, I hear you have some fossils you would like to restore?" I smiled, "yes I have two" as I showed him the Helix and Dome Fossil respectively. "My your quite lucky, finding fossils is quite rare, to have found two, well you must be quite determined." I agreed, "I wanted to catch every Pokemon and that means fossil Pokemon as well." The head scientist agreed, "right you are, well, if you would follow me, I'll take you to the fossil restoration machine." As we walked he explained some possibilities of what might happen.

"Sometimes when the Pokemon are restored they can act in different manners. Some lash out in confusion, shock or fear. That's too be expected, they've been revived and are now in a completely different time period. Things have changed since they were around. Seeing humans may also be quite confusing as well. Lucky for you however having two fossils that came from around the same time period, the two may be comfortable around one another. My basic advice is, once you catch them, don't battle with them immediately, take some time and speak with them, they'll appreciate it I'm certain of that." I agreed and understood what he meant. It must be so scary to be revived in a time you didn't know. Humans didn't exist back in their time so being surrounded by things you've never seen before, it all must be so confusing. No wonder why some of the Pokemon lash out.

Soon enough we arrived at the fossil restoration machine, "if you wouldn't mind, may I please borrow your two fossils" at that I handed him them both and watched as he fossils were placed in the machine. With some dials the fossils began glowing, "the process will take some time as I'm sure your aware. If you'd like to come back in around an hour, the fossils will be close to restoration. I believe it would also be good of you to be around when they've been restored, being with someone that will be their future trainer might be comforting to them." I agreed once again and headed outside to explore the island some more.

While waiting for the hour to pass by I contacted Professor Oak, "Professor Oak, it's me Leo" Professor Oak seemed happy to hear from me, "Leo my boy, how are you?" I spoke, "I'm doing really well, I'm currently in the process of having my Dome and Helix fossils restored." Professor Oak seemed surprised, "Leo, fossils are remarkably rare, may I ask where you found them?" He seemed genuinely curious, "I found them deep inside Mt Moon." Professor Oak paused and I imagined him with a thinking position. "That makes sense, trainers in the past have explored Mt Moon and have found fossils before, but to find two now that's good fortune for you Leo." I smiled that had been the second person to say I had been lucky to find two fossils

"Taking care of fossil Pokemon will be a challenge that's for sure." I said having had no experience at handling fossils. "Well from what I've seen from other trainers, they act just like your ordinary Pokemon. Most of the time they're just confused from when they wake up." Professor Oak said providing me advice on what I should expect. At that we ended the call and I walked around the city for the next hour before I returned to the laboratory.

Almost immediately the head professor approached me, "you have good timing, your fossils are about to be restored. I'd also like to ask if your prepared for a battle. As I mentioned some fossil Pokemon when revived can attack." I nodded my head, "I'm ready for anything!" I said determined and at that we entered the area where the fossil restoration machine was.

Upon my arrival, the fossils had just been restored and I saw the two small Pokemon that had been restored. The professor explained who they were, "your Dome fossil was restored to a Kabuto and your Helix fossil was restored to a Omanyte." I smiled excited at the prospect of meeting the Pokemon. When the two spotted us, they became nervous, pondering to each other what these strange creatures were and what they wanted.

Slowly, as if I was approaching a nervous and angry Pokemon in the wild, I approached Kabuto and Omanyte attempting to placate them. "My names Leo, I'm a Pokemon trainer. Your Kabuto and Omanyte, it must be strange having been restored in a completely different era, but if you'd allow it, I can show you that this era isn't all that different to yours."

Kabuto and Omanyte seemed to communicate with one another while I patiently waited to see what the two Pokemon would decide on doing. After what seemed like a few minutes the two fossil Pokemon turned to me and nodded their heads. "Pokeballs go!" At that I threw the two Pokeballs and watched as the fossils were captured. "Omanyte has been registered to your Pokedex. Omanyte the Spiral Pokemon a Rock and Water Type. This Pokemon is a member of an ancient, extinct species. Omanyte paddles through the water with its ten tentacles, looking like its just drifting along."

Then Rotom registered the next fossil. "Kabuto has been registered to your Pokedex. Kabuto the Shellfish Pokemon, a Rock and Water Type. While some say this species is extinct, Kabuto sightings are fairly common in some places." At that the professor approached me, "congratulations are in order, those two seemed to really trust you, I wonder why?" The professor obviously would of wanted to discuss more about the fossils, but he understood I was on a journey. "If you find any other fossils while on your journey, your always welcome to come back and we'll restore them for you." At that we bade each other farewell and I exited the laboratory.

Before leaving, I headed over to the dock, with the ocean and decided to attempt to create a strong bond between me and the two fossil Pokemon. "Come on out Omanyte and Kabuto!" The two appeared and they already seemed happy and comfortable while floating on the waters surface. "I figured this would make you feel comfortable. Being part Water Types made me believe that in your day you would have lived in the oceans. Though your appearance does seemed similar in some regards to Krabby and Kingler. I wonder if your evolutionary paths connected somehow."

I pondered for a while before realising that the Pokemon looked completely confused at my queries, "oh sorry, I was just thinking aloud. Anyways, how does the water feel?" I asked and the two cheered as best as they could. "That's good, so does this era seem any different to you?" I asked wondering if they knew of any differences. The two seemed to observe their surroundings before they naturally pointed towards me confused and interested.

"Oh your probably wondering about me right? Well humans weren't around when you were, we likely came around long after you both went extinct. I'd like to say we're not too different though, we're both alive aren't we." I smiled hoping that they didn't get upset about me mentioning they had technically been extinct for quite some time. However, they seemed rather happy, "oh, I have an idea, would you like to meet some of my friends?" The two fossils agreed knowing they had nothing to lose.

"Come on out, Blastoise, Venusaur, Charizard and Hypno" I introduced the two sides to one another. "Omanyte and Kabuto these are Blastoise, Venusaur, Charizard and Hypno, just a few of my current Pokemon, I have many more though." Then I introduced the new generation to the old generation. "Blastoise, Venusaur, Charizard and Hypno I'd like you to meet the new additions, Kabuto and Hypno. They were revived from fossils I found at Mt. Moon."

At that the two groups of Pokemon began chatting and Omanyte and Kabuto did seem very comfortable around all my Pokemon. Perhaps they oriented towards Blastoise more knowing he was a Water Type like they were. In their own language, Kabuto and Omanyte questioned the team members about me. Blatoise explained that I was as mentioned a human named Leo. Venusaur added on, that their trainer was travelling through Kanto to catch every Pokemon to complete the Pokedex. Charizard then added on in their spare time they were challenging gyms to keep them active. Hypno finalised by using his psychic abilities to help the two fossil Pokemon understand everything they needed to know about the current era and the trainer in front of them.

It seemed as though, Kabuto and Omanyte had been told that I was apparently a kind and loving trainer as the two Pokemon seemed to instantly gravitate towards me and I knew that my Pokemon had probably done some much needed translations for me. I thanked them all, not knowing that Hypno had also mentioned not directly but indirectly that I was going to be needing them all for something years on in the future. But he couldn't say what for wanting it to be a surprise. Though he did seem happy and not concerned making everyone believe it was good fortune and not bad fortune.

After making a strong bond with both fossil Pokemon, I had decided not to challenge the gym here, but to actually make my way back to the mainland and challenge the Saffron City gym who I had heard was exceptionally powerful with Psychic Types. The journey back would also help me ensure that both fossils got some time exploring the land.
