Sonic and Tails comfort each other over their phobias

This is a follow up to "Chaos Change" so you should read that before you read this. Also I just want to note the characters' ages here: Sonic is 17, Tails is 15 and Amy is 16

Chaos Growth

Sonic zipped into the garage and dropped the armful of coiled up wire and circuits he had been carrying. "Tails, are you sure you need all of this?" He turned to watch Tails as she pushed a cart full of mangled metal part into the garage.

"Of course," Tails stopped pushing and swiped the sweat from her forehead, "Phew! I can't just waste good parts like this and I don't want to leave it lying around the forest."

Sonic chuckled, "At least we got it in before the rain," he peered out at the overcast sky, "I'm gonna go chill for a while. Need any help?"

Tails hit the garage door button, "Nah, I'm going to work on the design for the X Tornado 3. Don't want any other accidents like last time."

"I dunno," Sonic zoomed over to Tails, "Other than the explosion I don't think it was so bad." He grinned and gave Tails a kiss.

Tails kissed back, "Thank. I want to get started on this now while it's fresh in my mind."

"OK, have fun," Sonic zoomed away leaving Tails to her workbench.

"Now let's see..." Tails mused as she started to draw out the basic design.

Sonic lay on the beanbag chair in the living room, idly channel surfing. It wasn't the most fun way to spend his time but some times even he liked to just veg out and relax.

FLASH!

KRACKA-BOOM!

The flash of lightning and crack of thunder had Sonic on his feet in an instant and speeding back to the hangar. "Tails? Tails!" He shouted, zipping around trying to find her.

FLASH!

KRACKA-BOOM!

"AAAAA!"

Sonic heard Tails' scream and rushed over to her desk where he found her curled up underneath, knees brought up to her chest, hands over her ears and eyes screwed shut.

"Tails?" Sonic reached out for her.

FLASH!

KRACKA-BOOM!

Tails pulled in tighter, wrapping her tails around herself protectively. A moment later she felt warm arms wrap around her as Sonic crawled under her desk and held her close.

"Don't worry, Miles, I'm here for you." Sonic whispered.

Tails relaxed just a little, enough to look up at Sonic's green eyes that were full of sympathy for her. "Sonic..." She whispered.

FLASH!

KRACKA-BOOM!

"AAAAAAAHHH!" Tails grabbed onto Sonic like a security blanket, whimpering and shivering.

Sonic rubbed her back and whispered comfortingly in her ear, "I'm here, Miles, don't worry, I'm here."

"Thank you, Sonic."

They sat there together for what seemed like hours, Tails clutching on to Sonic as he rubbed her back. Every bolt of lightning and boom of thunder made Tails cry out but Sonic didn't let go.

FLASH!

Sonic counted the seconds until the thunder boomed.

KRACKA-BOOM!

"Sounds like it's moving away," Sonic looked up at the high windows, still spattering with rain. He looked down at the still shivering vixen in his arms. "Want me to help you get to bed."

Tails nodded, "Please." Her voice was small and distant.

The walk towards her bedroom was slow, Tails unable to take all but the most measured short steps.

FLASH!

KRACKA-BOOM!

"AHHHHHH!" Tails froze in place shaking and her legs nearly buckling, but Sonic held her close and upright until she was able to walk again.

They finally made it to her bedroom and Sonic helped Tails undress as she was to rattled to do it herself, dropping her tube top, jean shorts and boots in a small pile before Tails climbed into bed.

Sonic turned to leave but found Tails clinging to his hand, "Sonic. Please don't leave me alone." Her eyes quivered.

Sonic sighed and smiled, kicking off his shoes and carefully sliding in next to her. "Don't worry, I'll stay."

FLASH!

KRACKA-BOOM!

"AAAAAHHHHHH!" Tails clung onto Sonic under the covers, burying her face into his chest.

"Don't worry, Miles, I'm here." Sonic whispered into her ear.

They lay together as the storm receded, the occasional flash of lightning and boom of thunder still making her go rigid and whimper as Sonic just held her, "I feel so childish... scared of lightning..."

"It's not childish," Sonic rubbed her back, "Everyone's scared of something and you wouldn't want to be caught flying in this."

Tails looked up at him, "Like you're afraid of water."

Sonic chuckled in embarassment and turned his eyes away, but didn't let go, "Yeah, but I'm more scared of drowning because I can't swim..."

Tails couldn't help but smile and carefully wrapped her tails around him, enfolding both of them in the fluffy brushes, "It's alright, Sonic. Thank you."

FLASH!

The light briefly illuminated their faces as they stared at each other.

KRACKA-BOOM!

This time Tails didn't quiver or freeze up. "Thank you, Sonic, for everything."

"Any time." They kissed. "I love you, Tails."

"I love you too, Sonic." Tails buried her face in his chest again as Sonic rested his head on hers. "So, want me to teach you how to swim?"

This time it was Sonic's turn to freeze up, "Uh well..."

OoOoO

"Tails, I look ridiculous..." Sonic stood at the edge of the swimming pool, wearing black trunks and bright orange water wings.

Tails stood next to him in a green two-piece swim suit, "It's better if you don't worry about sinking at first, besides it's either I teach you or I leave you with the kid's swimming class.

Sonic looked over to the other end of the pool at the instructor teaching some 5-year-olds how to stay afloat. "I'll learn from you."

"Good, and I'll be here just in case something goes wrong." Amy Rose stood between the two of them, wearing a one-piece red lifeguard's swimsuit complete with whistle on a string necklace.

"Since when are you a lifeguard, Amy?" Sonic gave her a quizzical look.

Amy scoffed, "You don't know everything about me, Sonic. Now get in."

"Alright." Sonic stared at the pool water. "Here I go, just give me a min-AAAAUUGGH!" He felt a slight push from behind from Amy then toppled in, spluttering for a moment before the water wings helped him stay afloat, "Not funny, Amy!"

"Maybe, but it was either that or wait an hour for you to chicken out." Amy folded her arms.

"Just float there for a minute, get a feel for the water," Tails turned to Amy, "You're not mad about me and Sonic, are you?"

Amy looked skywards for a moment, "Maybe a little, but as long as you're happy together. Besides I could never convince him to try learning how to swim. Now get to it."

"Thanks," Tails climbed into the pool and swam over to Sonic, "Alright. Let's practice kicking first."
