#8 of Pokemon - To Catch Them All

Leo explores Lavender Town and challenges Erika in Celadon City

After exiting the Rock Tunnel to the south I returned to Route 10, however, the southern part of the route seemed to contain the same majority of Pokemon that were on the northern part. Still there were trainers who wanted to challenge me to battles still. The first one was a hiker who sent out a Geodude and followed up with the evolved form a Graveler. Each one however, stood hardly any chance against my Kingler whose Bubble Beam knocked them out. Heading around the hiker, I met a camper who battled me with a Pikachu, I had Marowak come out and battle using the move Bone Club which I considered to be his signature move. With it Pikachu stood no chance and the campers second choice was a Pidgeotto and so I substituted for my Pikachu, whose Spark finished off.

A second camper soon challenged me with a Krabby and I sent out my Ivysaur who used a single Seed Bomb to finish the Krabby. The second choice was a Sandslash and as much as Ivysaur could handle the battle, I decided to substitute and sent out Wartortle whose Aqua Tail finished of the Sandslash. Exploring further was a Pokemon maniac who sent out a Charmeleon and as much as it would be interesting to battle with my Charmeleon there were smarter choices and so I substituted for my Psyduck whose Water Pulse overpowered the Charmeleon's Ember and knocked it out. At that I had battled all the trainers on the route and as far as I could tell caught all the available Pokemon and so I continued south and reached Lavender Town.

Upon entering the most noticeable thing I could see was the Pokemon Tower a place where Pokemon rested, some people visited to pay their respect to the many Pokemon who passed away. I myself felt inclined at some point to pay my respects to the Pokemon who had long since left. Before entering I first entered the Pokemon centre and had my Pokemon fully healed. Once that was done I decided to pay my respects to the fallen Pokemon in the Pokemon Tower. After walking around I was thanked for visiting my the locals who found it lovely that someone as young as me wanted to pay my respects for fallen Pokemon.

Heading up a floor, I wasn't expecting to be challenged to a battle, but I guess the saying of where their are trainers there are battles. The coach trainer sent out a Geodude, but it didn't stand much of a chance against my Gloom who powered through with a Mega Drain. Heading upwards to the third floor I was surprised and maybe let out a slight yelp when a wild Gastly suddenly appeared in front of me sticking its tongue out at me. In my surprise I threw out my Growlithe who looked confused before he saw the Gastly looming over him. Instead of being frightened he barked confidently. "Growlithe use Ember!" Ember struck Gastly, making it falter before he grinned disappearing and reappearing all around.

Gastly wasn't fooled and used his nose locating the real Gastly and used another Ember this time weakening the Gastly enough for me to throw a Pokeball and watch as it shook once, twice, three times before the capture was confirmed. "Gastly has been registered to your Pokedex. Gastly the Gas Pokemon a Ghost and Poison Type. With its gas - like body, it can sneak into any place it desires. However, it can be blown away by wind." When I released Gastly to heal him from the battle, he accepted the help but pretty much revealed his true personality to me. Gastly was a prankster and took advantage of absolutely any opportunity he got to startle me. In battles however, he followed them well, even trying to scare his opponent and make them drop their guard so he could finish them off. It even seemed as though I'd caught an unusually powerful Gastly, who far outpowered other wild Gastly I'd find traversing around.

While training my new Gastly, I was challenged by a Channeler who sent out a Gastly as did I. My Gastly already knew the moves, Lick, Hypnosis, Confuse Ray and Night Shade. "Gastly use Night Shade!" Ghost Type moves were super effective against other Ghost Types. Meaning Gastly had a great time against the Ghost Types. The battle was one relatively easily and he already begun evolving. This wasn't too surprising as I knew he was already far more powerful than other Gastly I had seen. "Haunter has been registered to your Pokedex. Haunter the Gas Pokemon a Ghost and Poison Type. If you get the feeling of being watched in darkness when nobody is around, Haunter is there." Proving that was Haunter himself, who disappeared into the shadows but I still felt his eyes watching me. Haunter did attempt to scare me but I had expected as much and remained unfazed making Haunter slightly disappointed before he grinned enjoying my newfound confidence as it gave him a more challenging opponent to scare.

We continued being challenged by more trainers, the next one also had a Gastly and as such the battle ended with a single Night Shade. The next trainer sent out another Gastly and I decided to give my Haunter a temporary break and instead sent out my Kadabra who at first felt slightly uncomfortable in an area surrounded my ghosts his weakness. However, when he felt my courage and confidence in his abilities Kadabra ignored his sense of concern. Kadabra's Psybeam knocked out the two Gastly without any troubles. Heading up another floor I continued breezing through the trainers and their Gastly's.

Gyarados also enjoyed battling the trainers, however, this opponent had a Gastly which Gyarados' Bite dealt with but the second was also a Haunter. I had wondered whether Gyarados would find the evolved form more challenging, however, a single Bite defeated even Haunter. At that I headed upwards and battled another trainer who had a Haunter. I sent out my Vulpix, who had learned a nice move recently that would be great against Poison Types. "Use Extrasensory!" Vulpix's new move definitely worked wonders against the Haunter who was defeated. This continued against the next trainer as well.

One trainer had four Gastly's which helped Vulpix grow even more powerful, each Extrasensory managed to defeat them all with just one move. I continued upwards another level, up on this level a rather powerful trainer challenged me with at first a Haunter, at first I had believed it would go the same as usual. I had sent out my Vulpix and used Extrasensory as per usual but Haunter had evaded and poisoned my Vulpix. At first the Toxic didn't cause much damage but over time it was a real problem. Luckily Vulpix managed to defeat the first Pokemon. I immediately returned him and healed his poison while substituting instead for Growlithe. The other two Haunter's were defeated by Growlithe's Bite and his good senses allowing him to detect the ghosts presence.

The next trainers Haunter was also defeated by Growlithe's Bite and I moved onwards to the next trainer who used a Gastly followed by a Haunter those were defeated by Bite as well. Before I could finish exploring the floor, a ghost appeared before me, it wouldn't allow me to pass and as such I had to descend down the tower. After returning to the town, I looked at my map on my Rotom Phone and decided to head on over to Celadon City where the next gym was. To get there first I needed to head on over to Route 8 to the West. Almost immediately on the route I was challenged by a beauty who sent out a Clefairy and I sent out my Ivysaur. "Clefairy use Metronome!" The beauty commanded and Metronome chose Dragon Rage. "Ivysaur dodge that and then use Razor Leaf!" Ivysaur just barely dodged the incoming Dragon Rage before retaliating with Razor Leaf.

Clefairy wasn't expecting such a fast counter and a such Razor Leaf hit its mark and Clefairy stumbled but wasn't quite defeated yet. "Ivysaur wrap this battle up use Take Down!" The weakened Clefairy tried using Sing to prevent Ivysaur from landing Take Down but the move came too slow and Ivysaur was moving too quick and as such Ivysaur defeated Clefairy. I was kind of surprised though when Ivysaur began glowing signalling his evolution. I knew he was close to evolving, he had given me signs he was reaching his limits. "Venusaur has been registered to your Pokedex. Venusaur the Seed Pokemon, a Grass and Poison Type. A bewitching aroma wafts from its flower. The fragrance becalms those engaged in battle."

I looked proudly at the fully evolved form of Venusaur and congratulated him, Venusaur had to get used to his now increased size after all he had grown much. Venusaur now even had some more powerful moves, even learning Sludge Bomb a nice Poison attack that I hoped would one day come in handy if ever Venusaur battled any Grass Pokemon. An ace trainer then challenged me with a Kadabra, and I sent out my Venonat, he had been showing signs of evolving as well and he had struggled so much as a Venonat but I knew he was strong enough to handle a Kadabra. My plan with Venonat was too either inflict it with a status condition and then take advantage of the situation and claim an easy win. Before I could even make a command, the ace trainer made the first move, having their Kadabra use Psybeam. Luckily Venonat dodged thanks to quick refelexes and I countered by having Venonat use Disable preventing Kadabra from using Psybeam for a while.

Venonat then took advantage and used Stun Spore paralysing Kadabra and then unleashing Leech Life which was super effective and allowed Venonat to claim a dangerous but clever win. It was definitely risky though and something I'd rather not do again. I guess my apparent risk was worthwhile as Venonat begun glowing signalling his evolution. "Venomoth has been registered to your Pokedex. Venomoth the Poison Moth Pokemon a Bug and Poison Type. The powdery scales on its wings are hard to remove from the skin. They also leak out poison that leaks out on contact." Upon hearing about that I did look down at my skin, but saw no scales on me. Venomoth seemed to be able to control perhaps when its scales are dropped or the potency of the poison being secreted. Regardless, Venomoth was extremely happy with his evolution seemingly growing vastly compared to his prior form.

The battle resumed when the ace trainer sent out a Machoke and I carried on battling with my newly evolved Venomoth using his newly learned Psybeam which knocked the Fighting Type out rather quickly. This showed me that Venomoth was now capable of battling even when at a disadvantage. Continuing onwards I was challenged by a gamer who sent out a Seaking. I chose to use my newly evolved Venusaur, I was concerned when the Seaking used Horn Drill, which if it connected could defeat Venusaur in a single move.

"Venusaur use Vine Whip and grab Seaking, stop that move from connecting no matter what!" Venusaur must have understood that I was extremely concerned about not the Pokemon, but the specific move and as such, Venusaur blocked the Horn Drill, "now use Sludge Bomb!" Since Seaking was trapped inside the vines Sludge Bomb easily hit and defeated Seaking. Now that the battle was over I felt relief wash over me. A second gamer soon challenged me with a Koffing which was a Poison Type and as such I sent out my Dugtrio whose Slash was quite powerful. When Koffing attacked using Sludge, I commanded Dugtrio to dodge by using Dig and then attack using Slash which allowed Dugtrio to win.

A rocker then challenged me with a Jolteon and I sent out my Sandslash, who used Bulldoze to knock Jolteon out before it could strike back. Next a gamer challenged me with a Rhyhorn and I sent out my Kingler who won with a Bubble Beam. A lass then challenged me with a Pikachu and I chose to use my Graveler, who also used Bulldoze to knock the Electric Pokemon out. The next lass sent out a Meowth and I chose to use my Machoke whose Vital Throw knocked it out, this was followed by a second Meowth who fell the same way. Her final Pokemon was a third Meowth which as you could imagine was also defeated by a Vital Throw. Machoke did seem disappointed at the relatively easy wins. I encouraged him when he seemed disappointed saying that just meant he was a powerful partner Pokemon.

A school child then challenged me with a Magnemite and I chose to use my Charmeleon, whose Fire Fang proved too much for Magnemite to handle. I then headed down the underground path and reached the next route, which was Route 7. Right next to Celadon City sight of my next gym battle. Before that I had to see everything available here. Currently though I'd already caught the Pokemon I needed here previously. The only new ones were apparently wild Ninetales and Arcanine. However, I already had their pre evolved forms and one day would evolve them. My musings were interrupted when an ace trainer challenged me with three Pokemon. Her first Pokemon was Raichu the evolved form of Pikachu. Against Raichu I used my Onix who was immune to electric attacks and could use Dig to avoid moves as well. That's what Onix did, using Dig he defeated Raichu.

The ace trainers next choice was a Dugtrio and I substituted Onix for my Wartortle whose Water Pulse eventually hit the fast and tricky Digtrio who dodged most attacks using her own Dig. The final Pokemon sent out was a Seel, a Water Type to counter I sent out my Pikachu whose Spark was super effective winning the battle. The final trainer on the route was a coach trainer, who firstly sent out a Farfetch'd a unique Pokemon that carried a leek wherever it went. Farfetch'd was also a Normal and Flying Type, so I chose to send out my Graveler whose Rock Tomb trapped and defeated Farfetch'd. The second Pokemon he sent out was a Wigglytuff and so I substituted for my Nidorino, I had been meaning to try and work on getting a stronger Poison attack as all Nidorino and Nidorina currently had was Poison Sting and it just didn't pack enough of a punch and other moves were preferable.

Still Nidorino managed to push back the Wigglytuff with some close calls thanks to Wigglytuff using Sing and putting my Nidorino to sleep for quite some time. Luckily though Nidorino pulled through and claimed the win, but it was definitely close for comfort that's for sure. After that battle was over I headed over to the West and arrived in Celadon City sight of my next gym battle. Before challenging the gym leader I headed over to the Pokemon centre and had my Pokemon healed from some tough battling.

While waiting for my Pokemon to heal, I did some research on the Celadon City Gym leader, who was Erika a specialist on Grass Types. That meant I could easily exploit the many weaknesses of Grass Pokemon. I had heard she also used three Pokemon in her matches. That meant I had to choice three Pokemon that would be a perfect match against her. Out of all my Pokemon, I had quite a few that would fare well against Grass Types, those being. Venusaur, Charmeleon, Butterfree, Beedrill, Pidgeotto, Fearow, Arbok, Nidorina, Nidorino, Vulpix, Golbat, Gloom both of them, Parasect, Venomoth, Growlithe, Weepinbell and Gyarados was technically super effective as well.

Some other Pokemon did have potential, I hadn't really battled much with my Kangaskhan and knowing our bond was exceptional made me consider using her in battle as well. There were just so many choices. My pondering was interrupted when Nurse Joy returned my fully healed Pokemon and I decided on using the following three Pokemon against Erika. My first choice was Charmeleon, he was a given probably my most powerful Fire Type Pokemon. My second Choice was Venusaur, whose Sludge Bomb would be great and typing wise he would be great at taking hardly any damage against Grass or Poison attacks. My final choice was difficult, but in the end, I decided that battling with Golbat would be the best choice as like Venusaur his typing would be brilliant.

The Pokemon that didn't get chosen weren't disappointed like I had assumed they understood my decision making and knew that I would make it up to them by battling with them in training sessions. At that I headed inside the Celadon gym and was confronted by a lass at the entrance. "Are you here to challenge Erika the gym leader?" The lass asked me curiously to which I responded, "yes my name is Leo from Viridian City." The lass nodded her head and then explained an apparent requirement. "At the Celadon Gym, we only allow trainers with cute Pokemon to enter. You'll have to show me a cute Pokemon if you want to challenge Erika!"

This was all very confusing, why did I need to show this lass a cute Pokemon to challenge a gym leader. From what I knew there was no requisite for challenging any gym. Still I didn't have many options and wondered whether any of my Pokemon even qualified as cute. Now too me every one of my Pokemon was cute and powerful, maybe the powerful ones and the ones that looked tough would prefer to be titled as handsome instead of cute and beautiful. I knew that likely either Clefairy or Pikachu would qualify and so I sent out my Pikachu who seemed to confused at the lass who screeched in excitement at seeing what she called a adorable Pokemon. Pikachu turned to me confused and slightly disinterested but I just sighed myself, not really sure on how to respond.

"So can I challenge the gym leader now? I asked hopefully and the lass sighed dreamily. "Oh sorry, I was just so distracted seeing your absolutely cute Pikachu that I got side tracked. But yes, the Gym leader Erika will be waiting for you at the battlefield. Erika also uses the most cutest Grass Pokemon you'll ever see." At that the lass headed off further into the gym and I followed wondering just how this gym battle would go. Based on my other gym battles, they had been either surprisingly easy. Or quite difficult and challenging thanks to Misty and Visquez before.

"Welcome challenger! I am Erika, the leader of the Celadon City Gym! As I'm sure your aware I use Grass Type Pokemon." At that we both prepared while the referee announced the rules. "This will be a three on three battle. When one sides Pokemon are all unable to battle the other trainer will be declared the winner. Now trainers please send out your Pokemon! Thank you!" At that the battle begun. "Come out Tangela!" Her first choice was a Tangela and I used my Rotom Phone to gain an understanding of what I was battling.

"Tangela the Vine Pokemon a Grass Type. The vines of a Tangela have a distinct scent. In some parts of Galar, Tangela's vines are used as herbs." I put the Rotom Phone back in my pocket and grabbed my choice of Pokemon. "Come on out Charmeleon!" Charmeleon landed on the battlefield glaring threateningly at Tangela who seemed unfazed by the Fire Type opposing it. "Tangela please start this with Stun Spore" Erika commanded her Tangela who began creating a powder which it gently blew at Charmeleon. "Charmeleon use Flamethrower and burn that Stun Spore!" Charmeleon breathed out a powerful Flamethrower which burned Stun Spore away before racing straight towards Tangela.

"Tangela, use Vine Whip and grab on to a tree and dodge please." Erika remained calm when against a Fire Type and as such, her Tangela managed to dodge Flamethrower by latching onto a nearby tree and remaining out of reach. Charmeleon looked frustrated at Tangela dodging his Flamethrower but he knew he needed to reign in his anger and fuel his fire with his anger. "Charmeleon use Smokescreen lets make them panic!" Charmeleon breathed out a plume of smoke which blocked everyone's view of the battle. Ordinarily I would be concerned for Charmeleon but knew he would be able to detect Tangela far easier than Tangela detecting Charmeleon.

"Charmeleon, once you know where Tangela is, use Flamethrower!" Erika couldn't really come up with a counter since she nor her Tangela could see her opponent. "Tangela do whatever you can to avoid it!" For a brief moment Erika's calm facade seemed to be replaced with nervous panic but I knew that the battle wouldn't be won so easily. From the smoke a plume of fire appeared and eventually the smoke cleared showing Charmeleon cheering at Tangela who had been hit with a super effective Flamethrower. "Tangela is unable to battle! Charmeleon is the winner!" The referee announced as Erika returned her Tangela, "you did a wonderful job Tangela, take a break for now."

At that she grabbed her second Pokeball and sent out Weepinbell and since I owned one of these I knew their strengths and weaknesses better than anyone. Well maybe except for the Grass expert right in front of me. "Weepinbell please use Poison Powder on the field!" Erika commanded and her Weepinbell launched into the air before breathing out a cloud of Poison Powder. "Charmeleon Flamethrower burn away the Poison Powder." Charmeleon's Flamethrower like before against Tangela's Stun Spore burned away the Poison Powder, but that seemed to be what Erika had wanted.

When I looked over at the field and saw Erika smiling, I looked around panicking wondering where Weepinbell could have gone. "Now Weepinbell please use Slam!" At that Weepinbell descended above Charmeleon and slammed him right on the head, before I could even react or get Charmeleon to dodge or counter. Luckily though the damage seemed miniscule as Charmeleon stood up shaking his head before glaring. Since Weepinbell seemed to be comfortable both on the ground and in the air. I believed a substitution would be necessary. "Charmeleon return for now, you battled brilliantly, get some rest." I grabbed my next Pokeball, "your up next Golbat!"

I chose Golbat because of his typing, Poison Powder would have no effect on Golbat and as such they wouldn't be able to confuse us and land a surprise Slam anymore. Dodging in the air wouldn't work either against Golbat that's for sure. "Golbat, use Wing Attack!" Golbat flew downwards right to Weepinbell. "Weepinbell jump!" Erika's Weepinbell jumped surprisingly and dodged Golbat, but he wasn't dissuaded and pursued Weepinbell who while in the air couldn't really attack effectively. Poison Powder was about the only move they could use but against a Poison Type Golbat would be unaffected. Golbat then landed Wing Attack and we watched as Weepinbell fell to the ground before being defeated.

"Weepinbell is unable to battle! Golbat is the winner!" The referee announced as Erika once again returned her Weepinbell thanking it for a good job before she brandished her final Pokeball. "You've pushed me to extremes challenger here's my final Pokemon, come on out Vileplume!" Again I checked my Rotom Phone to learn about the new Pokemon. "Vileplume the Flower Pokemon a Grass and Poison Type. The larger its petals, the more toxic pollen it contains. Its big head is heavy and hard to hold up." Looking at Vileplume I could see that this ones leaves were quite large so I could assume it's Poison would be more toxic than a different Vileplume.

Based on that I substituted for a Pokemon that might struggle against Vileplume as Venusaur was also a Grass and Poison Type exactly the same as Vileplume. "Thank you Golbat, return for now." At that I grabbed Venusaur's Pokeball, "come on out Venusaur!" Upon seeing Venusaur, I could see Erika's eyes shining at seeing a Grass Type. "I can instantly tell you've raised your Venusaur with love and care. I can see that your Venusaur loves you deeply and wants to perform the best it can for you." That didn't surprise me, my bond with all my Pokemon was extremely strong, Erika probably noticed mainly because Venusaur was a Grass Type and she liked those types the most.

"Vileplume dear, use Petal Dance!" Vileplume sent a barrage of petals towards Venusaur who awaited his command. "Counter that with Sludge Bomb!" The two moves collided centre field and it looked as though Petal Dance was going to do more damage as it flew around the Sludge Bomb. However, that meant Sludge Bomb could strike directly at Vileplume. When Vileplume was struck, Petal Dance faded away before Venusaur could be hit. "Vileplume you use Sludge Bomb as well." I smiled, "we'll use Sludge Bomb as well." The two moves collided and a smoke cloud obscured our view. Suddenly from the smoke, Vileplume was struck by a second Sludge Bomb and fainted. "Vileplume is unable to battle as such the winner is Leo from Viridian City!" The referee declared.

Erika smiled, before she returned her Vileplume while we both walked to meet each other. "Well done challenger, your Pokemon have all been trained diligently." Erika leaned down to study Venusaur. "I know I already mentioned it, but as a Grass Type trainer and lover, seeing the bond you share with Venusaur was a sight to behold. I can only imagine just how strong you two will grow from here on out. Apologies I'm rambling, here this is for you the Rainbow Badge." At that I took the badge and placed it in my badge case.
