#7 of Pokemon - To Catch Them All

Leo explores through Rock Tunnel as he continues catching Pokemon

Heading through Route 9 was more difficult than I had anticipated, ledges separated areas making people who wanted to explore the entirety of the route and find all the secrets, they'd need to traverse the route multiple times. Not that I was bothered by it, I quite enjoyed travelling with my Pokemon. Speaking off which it wasn't long until I was challenged by a camper who sent out a Eevee, but I used Mankey whose Karate Chop managed to defeat the Normal Type. The camper followed up by sending out a Gloom, which I substituted for my Charmeleon and won with a Fire Fang. After the camper a hiker challenged me with an Onix and since I had one I understood their strengths more than anyone. Wartortle came out and used Water Pulse which knocked Onix out.

A second hiker challenged me with three Geodude, which gave Ivysaur a great time, rapidly using Vine Whip he knocked all three Geodude out and gained good experience from that battle. Another camper challenged me with a Sandshrew, so I sent out my Gloom who used Giga Drain and drained Sandshrew's energy knocking him out. The second Pokemon was a Raticate. I substituted once again for Mankey, as Raticate were decently powerful, but, a Karate Chop finished the battle for me. A child then battled me with a Diglett and I decided to use my Diglett against his, we both used the same moves but mine eventually came out on top, but it wasn't easy at all. The kid then sent out a Fearow, but before I could do any switching, Diglett began glowing signalling an evolution. "Dugtrio has been registered to your Pokedex. Dugtrio the Mole Pokemon a Ground Type. These Diglett triplets dig over 60 miles below sea level. No one knows what its like underground." Dugtrio wanted to celebrate but realised it was still battling.

Against a Fearow Ground Type moves had no effect and I knew Fearow were quite fierce opponents, since I owned one myself. I decided that it was safer to substitute Dugtrio for Pikachu who used a super effective Spark while dodging Fearow's Fury Attack winning me the battle. Since the battle was now over I sent out Dugtrio congratulating him on evolving and he smiled happily.

Continuing on I was challenged by a Black Belt who sent out a Mankey, I sent out Golbat, whose Wing Attack won the battle. Another camper challenged me with a Goldeen which was easy to defeat with Weepinbell, their second Pokemon was a Pidgeotto so I substituted for my Pikachu once more and used Spark. Before I headed through to Route 10 I was challenged by one last trainer, a Bug Catcher who used a Paras. My Paras hadn't had much battling, so I figured he could have a good battle against another Paras. Paras was a Grass Type and so was immune to powder moves however my opponent didn't seem to realise this, attempting to try and paralyse and put Paras to sleep.

I took advantage of my opponents mistake and as such had Paras power up rapidly using Growth and then finishing the battle with a powered up Leech Life. At that the battle was over and Paras actually began glowing signalling his evolution and I was quite surprised, it had taken longer than expected for Paras to evolve but boy was I glad he was now evolving. "Parasect has been registered to your Pokedex. Parasect the Mushroom Pokemon a Bug and Grass Type. The bug host is drained of energy by the mushrooms on its back. The mushroom appears to do all the thinking." Once again I congratulated on Parasect on achieving his evolution and he didn't cheer but he definitely couldn't contain his excitement.

At that I reached Route 10 and was challenged almost immediately by another camper who sent out a Eevee, which I defeated with my Fighting Type Mankey and then a Psyduck, which was easy pickings for my Ivysaur. Finally I was challenged by a coach trainer who used a Poliwhirl, it was a slight challenge, but Pikachu was able to win without taking much damage. The second Pokemon was a Primeape the evolved form of my Mankey. I sent out my Mr. Mime and countered her dangerous physical moves with Reflect, but it was shattered with Brick Break. Defence seemed unnecessary so I had Mr. Mime use a Psybeam and finished off the Primeape but that was definitely difficult. Before I entered Rock Tunnel, I quickly healed my Pokemon and headed into the Rock Tunnel.

Just before I entered a Krabby walked on in front of me. Using Pikachu I quickly caught the new Pokemon. "Krabby has been registered to your Pokedex. Krabby the River Crab Pokemon, a Water Type. It it senses danger approaching, it cloaks itself with bubbles from its mouth so it will look bigger." Krabby was definitely a surprising catch as I almost missed it. I needed to be more self aware of what Pokemon could be found and catch them before I forget.

In Rock Tunnel, I knew there were a large amount of new Pokemon I could find and trainers I could battle in preparation for my next gym battle. The first Pokemon I came across was a Machop a Fighting Type, against him I chose Butterfree. "Butterfree use Gust!" Butterfree used Gust which blew Machop a distance away but he seemed to hang in and charge back with a Karate Chop. "Fly upwards and dodge it!" I instructed and luckily, thanks to the height, Machop couldn't reach Butterfree. "Use Psybeam!" At that Butterfree fired off a Psybeam which knocked Machop down. "Perfect Pokeball go!" At that I watched as the Pokeball shook once, twice, three times before the capture was confirmed.

"Machop has been registered to your Pokedex. Machop the Superpower Pokemon a Fighting Type. Always brimming with power, it passes time by lifting boulders. Doing so makes it even stronger." I congratulated Butterfree on another successful capture much to his happiness and continued onwards through Rock Tunnel. The first trainer I faced off against used a Slowpoke and was dressed as his Slowpoke. "Venonat come on out!" Venonat was my choice against a part Psychic Type. "Use Leech Life!" The Leech Life was super effective and allowed Venonat to win.

Next up I found a Cubone a Ground Type, "come on Wartortle!" Wartortle was my best Pokemon, "use Water Pulse!" Wartortle's Water Pulse scored a massive hit and the Cubone was unable to continue fighting, "Pokeball go!" At that I watched as the Pokeballs catch was confirmed. "Cubone has been registered to your Pokedex. Cubone the Lonely Pokemon a Ground Type. This Pokemon wears the skull of its deceased mother. Sometimes Cubone's dreams make it cry, but each tear Cubone sheds makes it stronger." I released Cubone to see how he was, "Cubone nice to meet you, my names Leo" Cubone smiled waving his bone, seemed he wasn't sad about being caught which was my main concern.

The next trainer challenged me with a Kangaskhan which was a Normal Type and was really awesome, I'd heard they could be found somewhere inside Rock Tunnel. Before I could find one I had to win this battle and decided to see what Machop could do. "Come out Machop!" When he appeared he pumped his fists together confidently. "It's our first battle together, lets see how well we work together!" Machop turned to face me grinning confidently, pumping his fists in the air. "Machop use Low Sweep!" Machops darted towards Kangaskhan who attempted to catch the much smaller Pokemon, but she missed and as such Machop landed a super effective Low Sweep which lowered her speed.

However, landing that move, put Machop in a dangerous area, as Kangaskhan used Stomp, which struck Machop hard, I had believed he would have been knocked out but he stood up and I knew the perfect move to take advantage of his weakened state. "Use Revenge!" Revenge worked as a move which would deal double the damage that Machop had taken and since Kangaskhan did a lot of damage with Stomp. Revenge was my smartest move.

The powerful move ended up defeating Kangaskhan and she was returned to her Pokeball by her disappointed trainer. Before I carried on, I grabbed a potion and sprayed Machop, the damage he took may have seemed minor to him but I wanted to be certain he was capable of battling in the future. Continuing on I found a wild Rhyhorn and decided to have Machop have another battle. "Machop ready to go?" Machop smirked and again pumped his fists for battle. "Machop Low Sweep once again!" Machop's Low Sweep scored a hit against Rhyhorn and did super effective damage.

Thinking the Rhyhorn was weak enough to be captured I threw a Pokeball, The ball shook, once, twice, three times before the Pokeball burst open and Rhyhorn smirked confidently at Machop, before gesturing for us to attack again. "Once more use Low Sweep!" Rhyhorn however, used Bulldoze as a way of attempting to trip Machop up. However, even I hadn't expected Machop to simply continue on, as if the rumbling earth wasn't a disadvantage for him.

Landing his Low Sweep, he startled the weakened Rhyhorn and then gestured for me to throw another Pokeball. Following his advice I threw a Pokeball and watched as this time the catch was confirmed. "Rhyhorn has been registered to your Pokedex. Rhyhorn the Spikes Pokemon a Ground and Rock Type. Strong, but not too bright, this Pokemon can shatter even a skyscraper with its charging tackles." Machop turned towards me and fist bumped me, seemed we already had quite a strong bond.

Continuing through Rock Tunnel, I was challenged by a Black Belt who used a Onix, I sent out my Mankey who used Karate Chop which finished off the Onix with relative ease. Then a hiker challenged me with a Geodude first, Ivysaur used Vine Whip which defeated the Geodude, the next Pokemon that the hiker sent out was a Onix, which was also defeated by a Vine Whip. His final Pokemon was a Graveler, who required an extra hit of Vine Whip to be defeated. Another Black Belt challenged me with a Mankey and I sent out my Golbat, who was very comfortable inside caves. Using his natural prowess in the dark caves, he used Wing Attack and remained undetected by the Mankey winning with Wing Attack. The second Pokemon was a Poliwhirl, so I sent out my Pikachu and used Spark to knock the Poliwhirl out.

Heading up a level, I spotted the much rarer Kangaskhan and decided to have a go at catching it, based on the previous battle against a trained Kangaskhan I knew what to expect. "Come out Mankey!" Mankey was my choice, he was stronger than Machop and since Machop was able to defeat Kangaskhan, Mankey should be able to weaken Kangaskhan enough for me to catch it.

"Mankey use Karate Chop!" Mankey charged in while Kangaskhan attempted to counter using Pound. The two Pokemon clashed together fists meeting fists. Naturally though, the super effective Karate Chop managed to knock Kangaskhan back, however, she got up and was still raring to go. Kangaskahn then attacked using Headbutt, "block that move Mankey!" Mankey positioned himself in a defensive way and managed to push against the Kangaskhan, it was a struggle with Mankey being pushed back before he dug in his heels and managed to stop Kangaskhan from moving,

At that moment, Mankey pushed back and forced Kangaskhan off balance. "Now use Low Kick!" Mankey's Low Kick did some serious damage. Low Kick did damage based on how heavy the target was. kangaskhan was naturally a heavy Pokemon so Low Kick did a large amount of damage. Kangaskhan slipped down to one knee resting. I threw a Pokeball and watched as it shook once, twice and three times before the capture was confirmed. That was by far the most difficult capture I had so far.

"Kangkashan has been registered to your Pokedex. Kangaskhan the Parent Pokemon a Normal Type. There are records of a lost human child being raised by a childless Kangaskhan." That I guess made sense as Kangaskhan were parental Pokemon and seeing a abandoned lost child alone, might awaken some parental instincts in her. My musings were interrupted when Mankey shouted excitedly. Turning down to face him, I was surprised when I saw him leaping about glowing blue.

Turns out Mankey was evolving into Primeape. "Primeape has been registered to your Pokedex. Primeape the Pig Monkey Pokemon a Fighting Type. It stops being angry only when nobody else is around. To view this moment is very difficult." Not for me however, Primeape now looked rather happy and calm, far from angry. Primeape jumped gestured for a fist bump and I accepted. Primeape then began doing vigorous exercises that he never did as a Mankey and I wondered whether it was because he had more energy stored up inside his new body and he wanted to rid himself of it.

After moving on I was challenged by a camper and their Growlithe, I decided to see how good Cubone was at battling and sent him out. "Cubone come on out!" Cubone brandished his bone prepared for battle. "Use Headbutt Cubone!" Cubone charged towards Growlithe with surprising speed, Growlithe attempted to counter with Ember, but Cubone neatly sidestepped around the attack and knocked Growlithe out. A second hiker challenged me with an Onix and I chose to use my Psyduck and won with Water Pulse, the second Pokemon that came out was Sandslash and another Water Pulse was strong enough to knock Sandslash out as well.

Another hiker challenged me with a Machop and I sent out my Fearow and used Pluck which finished Machop off relatively quickly. Secondly was a Rhyhorn and I substituted for Primeape who managed to get some fighting in and calm him down. His Karate Chop had gotten even more powerful as a result of his evolution. After winning, I headed further into the tunnel and came across a ace trainer, who challenged me with firstly a Vulpix, my Graveler won that battle with a super effective Rock Tomb and then the next Pokemon was a Kadabra. I substituted for my Gyarados, who used Crunch and knocked Kadabra out before it could even react.

A second ace trainer sent out a Diglett who I countered with Wartortle whose Water Pulse was super effective. Their second Pokemon was one of the many evolved forms of Eevee. This one was a Flareon a Fire Type. Naturally Wartortle was more than capable of winning. However, Flareon did prove to be quite fast and powerful dodging several attacks showing it was quite the threat even when at a disadvantage.

A black belt was the next opponent who sent out a Machop and I sent out Pidgeotto, whose Wing Attack managed to win. The second was another Machop and the battle was a basic repeat of what had happened previously. Eventually I head up a level and was challenged by a camper who sent out a Nidorina, I countered by using my Kadabra. A super effective Psybeam was enough to defeat Nidorina. Right after a second camper challenged me with a Nidorino and Psybeam handled that battle the same as before.

The next camper used a Meowth and I sent out Machop once again, Machop had been growing more powerful and used Vital Throw to defeat Meowth. The second was a Vulpix and I sent out Onix who used Rock Tomb and in a confined place like a cave, the Rock Tomb was far more effective. At that I reached the end of Rock Tunnel, but before I left I did some training with my entire team. Wartortle, Charmeleon and Ivysaur were getting at that stage where I wouldn't be surprised if one already evolved to their final form. Butterfree and Beedrill continued well. In caves, Pidgeotto, Fearow, Golbat and Pikachu struggled against the multitude of Rock Types, but they did well against the occasional Zubat or Machop.

Raticate was in a similar boat, Normal Types really struggled against every type but he persevered and fought tooth and nail. Arbok, Nidorina and Nidorino were neutral, but they did grow stronger but at a slower pace. Sandslash had a great time as a Ground Type he was rather comfortable in caves and mountainous areas. So he appreciated the opportunity to train in an area he knew well. Clefairy hadn't really seen much battling, similar to Jigglypuff, Growlithe and Vulpix based on the environment but they did get some experience.

My two Glooms and Weepinbell had a easy time, though the occasional Zubat and/or Golbat caused some issues every now and then. Parasect had a slower time, though if only because he needed a better Grass Type move other than Absorb. Venonat was in a similar boat as his typing was disadvantageous against many types in Rock Tunnel, but I didn't give up on him. On a more positive note, Dugtrio much like Sandslash had been doing very well, he had grown very quickly compared to some others.

Meowth had been interesting, while training, he had actually evolved into a Persian, "Persian has been registered to your Pokedex. Persian the Classy Cat Pokemon a Normal Type. Getting this prideful Pokemon to warm up to you takes a lot of effort and it will claw you the moment it gets annoyed." As a Persian he had grown more prideful and many opponents were wary off him in battle. But when we were alone, that Persian was completely different. He underwent a complete personality change. With his trainer he enjoyed petting and brushing, just having some time alone he enjoyed when travelling. Persian even at some points gestured for his trainer to climb aboard so Persian would carry him along.

Psyduck was never really one to wear his emotions on his sleeve per say, but I thought he enjoyed training with me and growing more powerful. I just hoped that when he evolved, he wouldn't suffer from any chronic headaches anymore. Primeape was probably the most energetic of my Pokemon and had been getting along really well with my Machop, to the point where the two Fighting Types trained against each other testing each other. Kadabra was more on the quiet side, preferring my company on most occasions, though he did get along with some of my quieter Pokemon.

Speaking of Machop, when he was training, he evolved into a Machoke. "Machoke has been registered to your Pokedex. Machoke the Superpower Pokemon a Fighting Type. It's formidable body never gets tired. It helps people by doing work such as the moving of heavy goods." Now that Machoke was even more physically powerful, he did help me out with many things. However, I never even asked him for help, it was his own initiative and choice to help me.

For example, whenever he noticed that I was struggling with the terrain, perhaps their were many ledges and it was difficult for an ordinary human to cross. For a Pokemon navigating these treacherous conditions was like a walk in the park. So, whenever he desired, he would simply carry me across these locations. This was much to his trainers protest as he believed he was more than capable and didn't want to trouble Machoke or any of his other Pokemon with such unnecessary tasks. Machoke had even been speaking with his fellow Fighting Type Primeape and encouraged him to help out wherever necessary. To a Fighting Type, helping those weaker than themselves was what they did best and they liked helping their trainer so it was a win win.

In a cave, Graveler had been enjoying himself, rolling around at high speeds and simply growing stronger, he was enjoying himself quite well. Onix similarly was enjoying being around such a vast cave, where even he could grow stronger. When it came to helping me reach high places. Onix simply lifted me up and transported me to wherever I needed to go. He didn't seem all that bothered about being used for transportation. No matter, I always thanked him and any other Pokemon which helped me.

Drowzee had been progressing very well, to the point where he had also evolved into a Hypno. "Hypno has been registered to your Pokedex. Hypno the Hypnosis Pokemon a Psychic Type. Avoid eye contact if you come across one. It will try to put you asleep using its pendulum." After looking up from my Rotom phone and seeing Hypno, I had believed foolishly that he would put me asleep. As if knowing my thoughts Hypno chuckled and shook his head making me wonder if he knew what I was thinking. When he nodded again I knew that he must have that ability.

Even though my newly caught Krabby hadn't had any real battling against the trained Pokemon, he advanced extremely well, defeating the many Geodude's, Graveler's and even the occasional Onix. His apparent typing was helping him a lot. This was to the point when he already began glowing signalling his evolution. "Kingler has been registered to your Pokedex. Kingler the Pincer Pokemon a Water Type. Its oversized claw is very powerful, but when its not in battle, the claw just gets in the way." It did seem as though when Kingdra continued battling, that he was being weighed down by the weight of the claw, but it did assist him extremely well against his usual opponents. It seemed to be a necessary if not a slight hinderance gain.

Cubone, had actually been growing more confident in his own abilities and himself as well. Whenever he won a battle, not only did he come over to me and give me a hug as if he needed confirmation that he battled well and did a good job. With his most recent victory, he darted over towards me as usual, but he stopped in confusion when he body began glowing signalling his evolution. "Marowak has been registered to your Pokedex. Marowak the Bone Keeper Pokemon, a Ground Type. When this Pokemon evolved, the skull of its mother fused to it. Marowak's temperament also turned vicious at the same time."

I did see a personality change when Marowak battled, he battled with more vigour and energy in his strikes. At the end of the battle the personality that I had seen faded away and he still expected me to congratulate him which I always did. Probably a habit I had gained permanently now. Rhyhorn was much different, the Pokedex may have stated that Rhyhorn have a one track mind, but my Rhyhorn definitely seemed different. Rhyhorn seemed to have more intelligence than the Pokedex stated. Or perhaps my Rhyhorn was different but I embraced him nonetheless. As one would expect I never really battled with Chansey, but that's not too say I only caught Chansey just to complete the Pokedex. Any Pokemon I caught I wanted to also make a strong bond with. Chansey actually helped me heal each and every one of my Pokemon and encouraged them to do their best. Chansey did gain experience by observing my Pokemon and seeing what their strengths and weaknesses were.

Kangaskhan was a gentle giant, that was something that I knew easily. In battles, Kangaskhan was powerful and didn't let up no matter who she was up against. However when we were alone, Kangaskhan would almost treat me as if I was still but a child and would treat me as such. Almost as if she was my second parent, giving my own mother a run for her money. Kangaskhan would watch over me and ensure that no dangerous Pokemon ever even got close to hurting me or her child in her pouch. Speaking off her own child, he liked to occasionally under the cautious and watchful eye of Kangaskhan hang around me. Not too say Kangaskhan didn't trust me, know it was more to say her maternal instinct was just that powerful.

The last two were Mr. Mime and Gyarados, Mr. Mime found battling to be nothing more than a performance at least that's how he considered battling. Don't get me wrong, he took battles seriously, they weren't a game to him. He just likened them to a performance. Gyarados didn't quite agree with those views but still, he was nowhere near as vicious as other Gyarados and was much tamer. Perhaps wild Gyarados were just treated cruelly by nature and grew to hate everyone when they evolved. It was a circumstantial theory, but who knows? Perhaps Professor Oak knew the answer to the unbridled rage of Gyarados.

After all the training and evolutions, I left Rock Tunnel and continued onwards through to Route 10.
