#6 of Pokemon - To Catch Them All

Leo challenges the Vermilion City Gym and continues on his journey

After resting at the Pokemon centre for the night, I had planned on waking up early and doing some training with Geodude and Onix, two off the Pokemon I planned on battling against the gym leader. But, knowing my attitude with the mornings I decided a few extra hours wouldn't hurt and after all there was no rush the gym wasn't going anywhere. Unfortunately for me, my Pokemon seemed to disagree with me and as usual they decided to try and wake me up. Now that Pidgey had evolved into a Pidgeotto he was much stronger and just flapped his wings in my face. The breeze was annoying and as such I awoke much to the pleasure of my Pokemon.

After completing my morning routine, I headed out of the centre, thanking Nurse Joy for the room and headed into the city to do some training with Geodude and Onix. Mainly because the Vermilion Gym was an Electric Type gym and as such, Electric Types had no effect against Ground Types. Geodude and Onix had been training for a few hours now and we felt prepared to battle the gym leader. Upon doing some research while they trainer I found that the actual gym leader. Lt. Surge was away on a training trip with his Electric Pokemon and as such the acting gym leader was now Visquez a talented stand in gym leader at least that's what the rumours say. Some research also informed me she competed in the World Coronation Series so that meant she was powerful.

After some more training, I was surprised and excited when Geodude began glowing, signalling his evolution. Where Geodude was a Graveler now stood he looked far more powerful and battle ready. He pumped his fists together and smirked confidently. "Graveler has been registered to your Pokedex. Graveler the Rock Pokemon, a Rock and Ground Type. Often seen rolling down mountain trails. Obstacles are just things to roll straight over, not avoid." Judging by his power I could understand why Graveler would want to just charge straight in, why bother dodging if he was strong enough to power through.

I returned both Onix and Graveler and headed to the Pokemon gym, upon entering I saw who I presumed was Visquez she had a Raichu with her as well, that was seemingly lifting weights with it's tail as well. Visquez heard me approaching and turned around seeing me walking towards her. "Welcome, are you a gym challenger?" I assume she asked not knowing whether I would be competing in the World Coronation Series or not. "Yes, I'd like to challenge you to a gym battle!" I said confidently. "Good you have confidence, I like that, well then I accept your challenge." At that we took our places on the field and the referee explained the rules.

"This gym match will be between Leo from Viridian City and Visuqez the gym leader of Vermilion City. Both sides will use two Pokemon and whoever is the last one standing will be declared the winner! Please send out your Pokemon!" At that Visquez sent out her Raichu and I started out with my new Graveler. "Graveler I need your help!" Graveler appeared pumping his fists together he still maintained his confidence. "I see you've come prepared, your using a Ground Type which is immune to Electric attacks, very clever, but don't think type advantage will decide this battle. A gym leader isn't an ordinary opponent I hope you realise that!" I smiled and agreed before she began. "Raichu use Iron Tail!" Raichu's tail turned white, before it ran straight towards Graveler who glared waiting for a command.

"Graveler dodge and then use Magnitude!" Graveler backed away as Raichu's tail slammed into the ground, smashing it apart. Once at a safe distance Graveler used Magnitude. "Raichu jump in the air, then use Iron Tail and aim well." Raichu again jumped and as such Magnitude missed, but since Magnitude took time, Raichu's Iron Tail managed to score a super effective hit against Graveler. "Graveler are you alright?" I asked concerned knowing Steel Types were super effective against Rock Pokemon. I should have expected as much.

"So Raichu's faster than us, but not for much longer, Graveler use Rock Tomb and slow them down!" At that Raichu launched several Rocks around the field, the aim of them was to slow down Raichu. It seemed to work as now, Raichu had to avoid the several rocks that had been created. "Smash those rocks with Iron Tail and then keep going right towards Graveler Raichu!" Visquez immediately countered getting her Raichu to smash apart the rocks easily. "Graveler now use Magnitude!" While Raichu was approaching, the rocks obscured Raichu's view and as such, Magnitude shook the ground beneath Raichu causing immense damage. "Don't think it's over, use Reflect!" A shocking move, Reflect allowed Raichu to reduce the damage it would take from any physical attack.

"Alright Graveler use Rollout!" Graveler began rolling straight towards Raichu, "a head to head battle huh? Alright then Raichu, full power Iron Tail!" Visquez countered and the two Pokemon met in the middle. Graveler spinning faster and faster while Raichu's tail attempted to knock him back. Thanks to the damage that Raichu had already taken from Magnitude the Rollout seemed to just overpower him. As such Graveler rolled straight through knocking Raichu away as he uncurled. Raichu attempted to stand back up but collapsed.

"Raichu is unable to battle, Graveler is the winner!" The referee announced as Visquez returned her Pokemon. "That was quite impressive you combined offense and defence an impressive combination." At that she grabbed her next partners Pokeball. "But I wonder how you will handle my next Pokemon it won't be as easy, I promise you!" At that she released her Electrode. I didn't know much about Electrode so Rotom gave me the Pokedex entry, "Electrode the Ball Pokemon, an Electric Type. Stores electrical energy inside its body. Even the slightest shock could trigger a huge explosion." At that I decided to see whether Graveler could continue, "Can you go on Graveler?"

Graveler turned to face me, giving me a smirk and a thumbs up as best as he could anyway and so I decided to carry on for now. "Graveler use Magnitude!" At that Visquez smiled, "I thought you might do that, but that move won't work anymore! Electrode use Magnet Rise!" At that Electrode rose off the ground avoiding Magnitude and causing rocks to rise all around the field. This all confused and annoyed Graveler who stared upwards at the flying Electrode who grinned back at Graveler. At that Electrode then used the floating rocks to move itself around even bashing into Graveler every now and then. "Graveler use Rollout!" I had hoped that Rollout would be able to outpower her Electrode but the rocks allowed her Electrode to always maintain a step ahead.

"We'll use Rollout too!" Electrode, from it's position up on some floating rocks dashed toward Graveler who had stopped when he realised that his own Rollout wouldn't work. "Graveler behind you! Grab Electrode!" I commanded and immediately Graveler turned around and had his arms out to catch Electrode. The two Pokemon clashed together and Graveler tried to halt Electrode but it seemed his previous battle with Raichu and the damage he had already taken seemed to be the deciding factor. Eventually Electrode managed to force its way through and Graveler was knocked to the ground. Graveler just barely stood up, but he was completely exhausted as much as he probably wanted to see this battle to the end I decided a substitution would be smarter.

"Graveler you battled really well, take a break for now." At that I returned him and grabbed Onix's Pokeball, "come on out Onix!" At that Visquez was shocked at the appearance of Onix. "With Electrode floating around, Graveler couldn't really reach him, but I don't think that will be any problem for Onix, he's tall enough to catch Electrode no matter where it goes." Onix roared in agreement, seeing Electrode bouncing around he could understood why Graveler struggled so much.

"Onix, don't underestimate that Electrode, it's extremely fast, so lets boost your speed to, use Rock Polish!" At that Onix increased his speed to the point where he could easily keep up with Electrode's unpredictable movements. "Onix use Screech!" I had to cover my ears as did Visquez at the loud Screech that Onix gave off, "now Onix use Slam!" Through his own Screech, somehow Onix heard my command and slammed the stunned Electrode down to the ground. From the smoke Electrode appeared relatively unharmed, but it did seem exhausted.

"Electrode wrap this battle up with Rollout!" Electrode darted forward spinning rapidly while Onix waited for my command "use Rock Slide!" It was unexpected but the falling rocks completely surrounded and trapped Electrode who couldn't smash through them. "I think we've almost got this battle won, Onix now use Slam!" Thanks to Electrode being trapped by the falling rocks, Onix's Slam was difficult to avoid and as such Electrode was launched back before it eventually stopped spinning. I had believed it had been defeated however, suddenly Electrode began sparking rapidly. Visquez panicked, "not aftermath Electrode!" The explosion caused some damage to Onix, but he seemed relatively unharmed and after the explosion Electrode had been defeated.

"Electrode is unable to battle and as such the winner of this gym battle is the challenger Leo!" The referee announced as Onix cheered and wrapped his body around mine tightly, to the point where I had to request him to let go or else I might have been crushed. Instead Onix only lessened his grip keeping me there while he celebrated. Eventually he had to release me and we both headed towards Visquez. "Well that was a good battle, you did your research and that's part of the reason why you were able to win. The other was because of the bond you and your Pokemon share. I haven't seen a bond like that since one of my World Coronation Series battles. Now that takes me back..." At that I was confused but before I could question what she meant Visquez laughed.

"But that's not important, what is important is giving you the Thunder Badge, you've earned it!" At that I received the Thunder Badge and placed it in my badge case. At that I thanked Visquez for the battle and returned Onix thanking him and Graveler for such a tremendous battle and headed back to the Pokemon centre. Once my Pokemon were all healed I made a phone call to my mum. "It's me Leo!" I spoke as my mum picked up the phone, "great to hear you, I take it you've reached Vermilion City right?" I nodded my head, "yes, I've just got my Thunder Badge, I also visited the S.S. Anne!" My mum was shocked and sounded jealous. "You got to visit the S.S. Anne boy am I jealous, I've heard the sights are something to behold." I agreed with that sentiment that's for sure. "I also visited that new laboratory that popper up in Vermilion City a while ago." Mum pondered for a moment, "oh I know who your talking about, Professor Cerise's lab, he was a former student of Professor oak if I recall correctly." I had assumed as much. "Speaking of Professor Oak, have you spoken to him recently he might be interested in hearing how your journey is progressing."

At that I thanked mum and we said our goodbyes before I contacted Professor Oak, "oh Leo, how are you doing? Is your journey going well?" Professor Oak seemed very vested in the questions he was asking. "Yes, very well, I've caught many Pokemon in an attempt to start completing my Pokedex and I've already got three gym badges as well." Professor Oak was definitely impressed, "that's very impressive Leo, keep up the good work!" At that we ended the conversation and I pondered on where I would next need to go.

I had heard that there was a cave nearby, called Diglett's cave which had apparently been excavated by Diglett hence the name. I went there in the hopes of catching a Diglett and whatever new Pokemon were in the area. Heading East from Vermilion I reached Route 11 and spotted the Diglett cave. I quickly entered and began exploring the cave, it didn't take long to find a Diglett, one popped his head up in front of me observing me curiously. No doubt this Diglett hadn't seen a human down in this cave in a very long time.

"Come on out Psyduck!" Psyduck appeared looking confused as to why he was called out, "Psyduck I need you to help me catch that Diglett what do you say?" Psyduck seemed confused still, but I think he understood what was happening, he was smarter than he let on. "Psyduck Aqua Tail!" Psyduck's small tail extended flowing with water and rushed towards Diglett. However, Diglett had a unique advantage he could dig underground and dodge attacks easily. That's exactly what he did. "Wait for him to pop out then use Water Pulse!"

Psyduck waited patiently and when Diglett did pop out, he fired a Water Pulse which scored a direct hit. Diglett seemed to have been weakened by the super effective move and so I threw a Pokeball. One shake, two, three and the catch was confirmed. "DIglett has been registered to your Pokedex. Diglett the Mole Pokemon a Ground Type. It burrows through the ground at a shallow depth. It leaves raised earth in its wake, making it easy to spot." I was happy at the successful capture and thanked Psyduck for his help before returning him.

Eventually at the end of Diglett cave I was surprised when I returned all the way to Route 2, right by Viridian City. It was a unexpected surprise, but since I had already done everything I needed to, I returned back through Diglett cave and returned to Route 11. Exploring through the route I spotted a Drowzee walking around and decided to have a go at catching it. "Come on out Diglett!" Diglett appeared and seemed happy to already be battling.

"Diglett use Dig!" Diglett ducked underground avoiding the Drowzee's Pound and popped back up underneath the Drowzee surprising the Psychic Type. "Use Bulldoze to wrap this up!" At that Diglett smashed the ground causing Drowzee to stumble before I threw a Pokeball and watched as the catch was confirmed. "Drowzee has been registered to your Pokedex. Drowzee the Hypnosis Pokemon, a Psychic Type. If you sleep by it all the time, it will sometime show you dreams it had eaten in the past." That was definitely not something I knew. I had wondered whether Drowzee only did that for trainers that they adored or whether it was just based on proximity as the Pokedex stated. There really was so much still to be discovered about Pokemon. I guess I now understand all the questions that need to be answered about Pokemon.

I continued exploring but was surprised when a large pink Pokemon appeared from the grass before me, it was a Chansey and that was an unexpected sight. I hadn't known Chansey could be found around here, but seeing one now confirmed I was wrong. I understood that Chansey didn't like to battle and would avoid combat at all. Most Pokemon didn't even fight Chansey, even ones that enjoyed fighting since Chansey are known to be healers and it was considered dishonourable to attack someone who only wanted to heal and help you. I understood that my Pokemon would likely never forgive me for battling Chansey and so I decided on a more sensible approach.

When I threw the Pokeball, it captured the Chansey quickly, I had hoped that maybe the Chansey would understand that battling it would be unnecessary and it seemed as though Chansey understood me. "Chansey has been registered to your Pokedex. Chansey the Egg Pokemon a Normal Type. This species was once very slow. To protect their eggs from other creatures, these Pokemon became able to flee quickly." When I released Chansey she smiled glad she hadn't had to be battled to be caught and my other Pokemon seemed happy at yet another new friend. Too be frank, Chansey didn't have to battle anyways, like with Magikarp and formerly Abra, watching battles seemed to help Pokemon grow stronger even if they couldn't or didn't want to battle themselves.

Speaking of Magikarp, he had finally managed to reach his evolution and I must admit training a Magikarp is extremely difficult. They require so much care, but as they say the more difficult the more rewarding. "Gyarados has been registered to your Pokedex. Gyarados the Atrocious Pokemon, a Water and Flying Type. Once it begins to rampage, a Gyarados will burn everything down, even in a harsh storm." When Gyarados stared down at me, it looked like he was glaring and I hate to admit I was slightly nervous. What sort of trainer was I if I foolishly believed my own Pokemon would turn on me just because of instincts.

Gyarados suddenly lunged down to me but not to harm me but to gently coil around me, much like Onix and Arbok had done as a way of expressing its love for me. Gyarados wanted to test his strength and so when we came across a wild Mr. Mime Gyarados was fully invested in battling for me. "Gyarados use Crunch!" Gyarados immediately lunged towards the stunned and panicking Mr. Mime but before he could make contact he was blocked by a wall of wonderous light. It looked like a Reflect which was a problem.

"Gyarados use Whirlpool!" Gyarados created a massive Whirlpool which he threw directly to the Mr. Mime and Reflect wasn't able to block the attack. Trapped within the Whirlpool Mr. Mime was unable to effectively attack nor defend providing Gyarados with an excellent opportunity and as such we took it. "Now Gyarados use another Crunch!" This time Gyarados swam through the vortex and crunched down on Mr Mime, doing some damage and at the same time, Mr. Mime was released from the vortex. All that damage seemed to have accumulated and exhausted the Mr. Mime to the point of capture.

"Mr. Mime has been registered to your Pokedex. Mr. Mime the Barrier Pokemon, a Psychic and Fairy type. Its known for its top-notch pantomime skills. It protects itself from all sorts of attacks by emitting auras from its fingers to create walls." Once captured Mr. Mime seemed rather happy to just perform his pantomime skills to an activate audience that being me and not wild Pokemon that preferred to quite simply attack the performing Pokemon.

After thoroughly checking the route and my Rotom Phone I couldn't find any new Pokemon and so decided to challenge the trainers on the route and see whether the new Pokemon I'd caught would be powerful enough to defeat these opponents. The first trainer was a youngster who battled me with a Nidorino. I chose you use Diglett and he managed to win the battle with a super effective Bulldoze while dodging the rampaging Nidorino's attacks by being underground.

A gentleman then challenged me with a Vulpix and so I sent out this time, my Mr. Mime, used Reflect to block physical attacks and primarily used Confusion to deal damage. Confusion even had an added effect which confused Vulpix, preventing it from damaging Mr. Mime. Next I was challenged by a mechanic who firstly sent out a Magnemite, I decided to use Vulpix, who avoided a Supersonic and finished the battle with a Incinerate. The next one he sent out was a Voltorb, to which I substituted for Diglett, who finished off the battle with a super effective Magnitude.

Mechanics seemed to be everywhere as another mechanic challenged me with another Voltorb, which Diglett once again handled easily. The next trainer used a Diglett themselves, however, my Wartortle used Water Pulse and claimed the win. A sailor was next and used a Slowpoke, Pikachu was my choice and used his Spark to finish the battle. A lass challenged me with a Jigglypuff and I countered by sending out Nidorina. Nidorina's Poison Sting finished the battle after a couple of hits before Jigglypuff could use Sing. Her second Pokemon was a Nidorina as well, so I substituted for my Kadabra. Since Kadabra evolved, he learned some more potent attacks and wrapped the battle up with Psybeam.

Trying to go onward through to Route 12 was going to have to wait for now, a Snorlax was fast asleep and wasn't going to move and currently I didn't have any way of getting it to wake up. I could try and catch it while it was sleeping but I didn't think it would be that easy. A quick check off the town map revealed that if I returned to Cerulean City I would be able to get around the sleeping Snorlax for now.

So that's what I did I returned all the way to Cerulean City and headed east through to Route 9. Before heading through the route I wanted to see how many Pokemon I'd registered to my Pokedex so far. The number was getting bigger and bigger as the days went by, currently at 53.
