#4 of Pokemon - To Catch Them All

Arriving in Cerulean City, Leo battles the gym leader and meets a Pokemon fanatic

Before reaching Cerulean City I had done some training with the recent Pokemon I had caught, those being Charmander, Mankey, Ekans, Sandshrew, Magikarp, Zubat, Onix, Geodude and Paras. All the Pokemon caught had grown even more powerful. Charmander had even evolved during a training session in Mt Moon, after all there were many trainers to battle and I couldn't pass on the opportunity. "Charmeleon has been registered to your Pokedex, Charmeleon the Flame Pokemon a Fire Type. It has a barbaric nature. In battle, it whips its fiery tail around and slashes away with sharp claws."

Charmeleon was said to be a barbaric Pokemon, difficult to control, has a temper but my Charmeleon seemed to be a little different, yes in battle Charmeleon definitely battled with more ferocity and he did follow my orders without question. Yet when we were alone and travelling Charmeleon acted just as he did as a Charmander a helpful Pokemon that's for sure.

Before I challenged the Cerulean City gym, I'd heard about a Pokemon maniac who lived up north from Cerulean City and that it might be worth visiting him. To get there however, I had to go through Route 24, it was a first a small golden bridge, that was referred to people as the Nugget Bridge and I could see why it was given that title. As I progressed along the bridge, I was challenged to a battle, by a bug catcher, who told me, "beat us five trainers and you win a fabulous prize!" I decided to accept and the battle had begun,

The bug catcher sent out a Venonat a Bug and Poison Type however, against Charmeleon he didn't fare very well, one Ember was all she wrote and the battle was over, much to Charmeleon's disappointment and mine too. The second trainer used a Psyduck and I decided to be safe and used Pikachu against the Psyduck and once again with relative ease, Pikachu used a Thunder Shock and defeated Psyduck without much trouble. The third trainer used a Sandshrew, so I used Oddish and a few Absorbs defeated Sandshrew without any harm coming to my Oddish.

The fourth trainer used a Meowth a Normal Type, that I hadn't seen yet on my journey, it was faster than I had anticipated, but I had used Mankey and Fighting Types were super effective against Normal Types and so with a Karate Chop, the Meowth fainted and I moved on to the last of the trainers. I was slightly disappointed so far, the challenges I had faced were mediocre at best and no trainers here had given me a run for my money and my Pokemon seemed disappointed as well, they enjoyed battles which challenged them, so far that seemed to be unlikely.

The last trainer used a Growlithe which I had hoped would be a challenge, sending out Geodude, who managed to easily take any Normal and Fire attacks that Growlithe used and defeated Growlithe with a single Rock Throw when given the opportunity. That was the very last trainer whom I had to defeat and so exiting the bridge I was confronted by a shady looking guy, "well congratulations, you defeated the five trainers and as promised here is your prise!" At that he handed me a Nugget an item which could be sold if ever I needed money.

However, before I could even continue on my journey, the guy spoke again, "By the way kid, how would you like to join Team Rocket?" At that he removed his civilian disguise and revealed he was wearing a Team Rocket uniform. I had heard of Team Rocket, they were causing trouble all over the Kanto, Johto, Hoenn, Sinnoh, Unova, Kalos, Alola and even the Galar region. They steal Pokemon and used them for evil and money. They are despicable thieves and not friends to Pokemon and therefore I would never even consider an offer to join such a team.

"You dare insult Team Rocket! Well then I'll just have to show you why we're the most feared organisation around the world!" At that he sent out a Zubat, "come out Pikachu!" Pikachu glared sparking threatening at the Zubat, "use Thunder Shock!" I commanded and the Zubat which probably had received no training whatsoever, was defeated easily. However, he wasn't done, "ugh return Zubat!" He brandished a second Pokeball and sent out instead a Koffing which was a Poison Type Pokemon. "Return for now Pikachu" at that I grabbed Onix's Pokeball, "come out Onix!" At that I threw Onix out and he glared at the Team Rocket grunt who began sweating profusely.

"What? How did a kid like you even manage to catch such a powerful looking Pokemon? But still if you give me that Pokemon and all your others perhaps I'll let you off easily" he should off not said that in front of Onix, who glared and roared loudly, causing Koffing to begin sweating and glancing nervously at his trainer who scoffed. "Koffing used Tackle!" At that I just smiled, "Onix, use Dragon Breath!" At that Onix breathed a blue energy right at the approaching Koffing, who suddenly stopped his body began sparking signalling he was paralysed.

That's why I liked the move Dragon Breath it was quite reliable with paralysing opponents, "finish the battle using Smack Down!" At that Onix smacked the Koffing down to the ground and it was defeated. At having all his Pokemon defeated soundly by a kid, the Team Rocket grunt glared and returned his Pokemon before he ran away into the distance faintly yelling that I would regret ever messing with Team Rocket.

I didn't feel concerned about apparently making an enemy out of the most powerful evil organisation when their grunts were challenging trainers to battle, but weren't even training their Pokemon effectively. Onix leaned down and wrapped his body gently around mine, while I petted his head, "thank you Onix, that could of ended badly had you not looked so threatening to that guy." Onix smiled before I thanked him again and returned him to his Pokeball continuing through the route.

I saw some areas where wild Pokemon were hanging around and decided to head on over there and catch some Pokemon, the first I saw was a Venonat and knew I had to catch it, "come on out Spearow, "use Peck on Venonat!" I instructed at Spearow flew right to the panicking Venonat and pecked it right on the head, I threw a Pokeball and the catch was confirmed. "Venonat has been registered to your Pokedex, Venonat the Insect Pokemon a Bug and Poison Type. Its large eyes act as a radar. In a bright place, you can see that they are clusters of many tiny eyes."

I pocketed the Pokeball before continuing to look around the route, the lake that was underneath Nugget Bridge was filled with Pokemon, most of those Pokemon however, were unobtainable until I gained access to a fishing rod. However, some of the lake Pokemon did go on dry land and one of those Pokemon was a Psyduck. "Come on out Bellsprout!" Psyduck stared blankly at the Bellsprout and myself before putting its head in its hands. "Bellsprout Vine Whip!" Bellsprout sent Vines to whack Psyduck before I threw a Pokeball at the weakened Psyduck.

One, two, three and the catch was confirmed, "Psyduck has been registered to your Pokedex. Psyduck the Duck Pokemon a Water Type. Psyduck is constantly beset my headaches. If the Pokemon lets the strange power erupt, apparently the pain subsides for a while." I always felt is must be horrible to suffer from chronic headaches for all your life. However, I had heard there were secret potions available in the Johto Region which were created to help a Psyduck specifically with its chronic headaches.

Continuing searching I did come across a Oddish and doing some research I couldn't believe I had forgotten that if I wanted to catch every pokemon, I would have to catch two Oddish, one would eventually become a Vileplume while the other would become a Bellossom. So, I quickly sent out Charmeleon and caught the second Oddish which would help me out against Water Pokemon. The two Oddish definitely made friends fast as well.

The final Pokemon I found was relaxing on a nearby rock, it was a Meowth and it opened its eyes lazily to see what was happening, when it spotted me it jumped down and began approaching, slowly. Just before it reached me, it gestured for a battle. Normally most Pokemon didn't approach trainers, but I guess Meowth were in a league of their own when it came to their apparent confidence levels. "Come out Mankey!" Mankey appeared swinging his arms around and shrieking loudly, Meowth however, yawned angering my Mankey who turned to me and pointed to give him commands.

"Mankey use Karate Chop!" At that Mnkey used Karate Chop and struck the Meowth right on the chest, Meowth stumbled but otherwise seemed unfazed, which made no sense at all. Turns out, it hadn't been lounging around, making a mockery of Mankey, while we were distracted, the Meowth had used Growl's to weak Mankey. However, repeated Karate Chops would still be effective against Meowth, even if they were weaker and eventually the Meowth was weakened enough for me to throw a Pokeball.

One, two and three and the capture was confirmed, "Meowth has been registered to your Pokedex, Meowth the Scratch Cat Pokemon a Normal type. It loves to collect shiny things. If its in a good mood, it might even let its trainers have a look at its hoard of treasures." I high fived Mankey at another successful capture and was happy to observe my Pokedex seeing that it was really coming along nicely.

I then headed to the east and arrived on Route 25, unfortunately for me there were no new Pokemon available to be caught since the previous route had the same Pokemon. However, I had noticed that Route 25 looked very much like a maze. Trainers everywhere challenged me to battles. A camper battled me with a Onix, however, since I was familiar with Onix, I battled using my newest Oddish and won. The second trainer was a young kid, who had a Diglett. This time I used my recent capture a Psyduck and used Water Gun which was super effective against the Ground type Diglett.

A bird keeper challenged me next and had a Pidgeotto and was therefore honestly the strongest trainer I had faced. Ultimately, I wanted to challenge myself and sent out my Spearow. "Spearow use Aerial Ace!" Spearow took off and flew toward Pidgeotto, "Pidgeotto dive down and use Sand Attack!" Pidgeotto dived down being pursued by Spearow who seemed to be gaining. I had wondered what their ploy was, using Sand Attack wouldn't effect Aerial Ace, as Aerial Ace couldn't miss.

The Pidgeotto reached the ground and smirked upward at Spearow, before using it's wing to send a barrage of sand directly into Spearow's path. Spearow hadn't expected the attack, but he closed his eyes and let his body guide him, using his instincts. Pidgeotto, wasn't expecting to be struck by Aerial Ace that's for sure. "Spearow wrap this battle up use Fury Attack!" Spearow rapidly pecked Pidgeotto who collapsed to the ground defeated.

At that victory, Spearow began glowing and was evolving, when the blue light faded, Fearow was where Spearow was. "Fearow has been registered to your Pokedex, Fearow, the Beak Pokemon, Normal and Flying Type. A Pokemon that dates back many years. If it senses danger, it flies high and away, instantly." Fearow cheered and flew around me showing his new skill at flying. I congratulated him and returned him giving him some rest.

A second kid challenged me with a Ekans and a Rattata, but both were defeated thanks to Sandshrew and Mankey respectively. I had begun to notice that this route seemed to have a multitude of hikers, yet we weren't really around a mountain per say. As you would expect the next trainer was a hiker, who had a Geodude. Once again I had Wartortle handle the fight with a single Water Pulse. His second Pokemon was a Machop, a Fighting Type, I decided to use my Zubat against him and with a Wing Attack, the battle was over just like that.

Continuing onward I was battling both trainers and wild Pokemon and had been training with Oddish both of them and Bellsprout as a couple of upcoming trainers battled with a multitude of Water Pokemon. It would also be good training for the Cerulean Gym if I decided on battling against Misty using those specific Pokemon. Oddish had both recently learned an upgraded Absorb, the move Giga Drain which was really good. With those new moves, both Oddish began evolving into Gloom. "Gloom has been registered to your Pokedex. Gloom the Weed Pokemon, a Grass and Poison Type. What appears to be drool is actually sweet honey. It is very sticky and clings stubbornly if touched."

I was happy for both Oddish, now Gloom and the next trainer, also used a Water Pokemon, being a Squirtle, which I had formerly owned before mine had evolved. It meant I understood that Pokemon's specific strengths and weaknesses better than other Pokemon. Bellsprout at first used Vine Whip, but Squirtle's shell had deflected the Vines even though they were super effective. To prevent Squirtle from blocking any attacks. Bellsprout used Stun Spore and followed up with Razor Leaf defeating Squirtle and he was rewarded with an evolution himself.

"Weepinbell has been registered to your Pokedex. Weepinbell, the Flycatcher Pokemon, a Grass and Poison Type. When hungry it swallows anything that moves. Its hapless prey is dissolved by strong acids." I was happy at yet another evolution. There was only one more trainer before I saw a lonely house in the distance, surrounded by a beautiful scenery. The lass sent out an Oddish, but Zubat handled the battle perfectly with a single Wing Attack.

It was unexpected, but Zubat, suddenly began glowing signalling yet another evolution. "Golbat has been registered to your Pokedex. Golbat the Bat Pokemon, a Poison Flying Type. It loves to drink other creatures blood. Its said that if it finds others of its kind going hungry, it sometimes shares the blood its gathered." Golbat fluttered around me before landing on my head happily. Unfortunately, I was already outside the lonely house, which I entered and so returned Golbat to his Pokeball for the moment, not before congratulating him on an evolution.

When I entered there was nobody in sight, it almost looked abandoned. However, upon closer inspection, I saw a Nidorino from behind some screens approaching me before it suddenly spoke. "Hi, I'm a Pokemon, or actually I'm Bill. I made a mistake and got combined with a Pokemon. Would you mind helping me out?" I agreed simply because he desperately needed it. "You'll need to run the cell separation system, it may sound complicated, but its rather simple, use the computer over on my desk while I go inside the teleporter."

At that I walked over too the computer and he entered the teleporter, once he was inside, I somehow managed to activate the cell separation system and as such the two teleporters began sparking with electricity. It honestly didn't look very safe at all. Unexpectedly smoke clouded the room and from it burst forth a regular Nidorino which couldn't speak. From the dust a man appeared coughing after inhaling the smoke.

"Thanks so much kid, if not for your I'd still be a Pokemon, but still here's something as thanks for you." At that he handed me a ticket for something. "That there is an S.S. Ticket for the cruise ship. S.S. Anne it pulls into port at Vermilion City. I hope you'll enjoy the sights there!" At that he headed off to continue doing whatever it was he did, hopefully he wouldn't make the same mistake and become a Pokemon once again. That would be disastrous and people don't seem to come here all that often.

Since, I'd done everything I wanted to here, I headed back through Routes, 25 and 24 and returned south to Cerulean City where I decided now I was ready to challenge the Water type specialist Misty. I'd also heard Misty had travelled through the Kanto and Johto region, much like Brock had when he was younger as well. Meaning that this gym leader would be more powerful that Forrest.

Entering the Cerulean Gym, I was introduced to a lovely swimming pool design. The gym resonated the feeling of water, such a wonderful sight. I walked along the platform, spotting the gym leader Misty as she was with her multitude of Water Pokemon. I had even spotted a Gyarados swimming in the lake, now that was a powerful Pokemon, one I wasn't even sure I could even defeat. As I got closer, Misty must have noticed my presence and turned to face me.

"Hello, you must be a gym challenger!" Misty posed "My name is Misty and I'm the gym leader of Cerulean City and a Water Type specialist. I aim to become one with my water Pokemon!" I smiled, "my name is Leo, from Viridian City, I'm here to challenged you to a gym battle." Misty smiled, "I accept your battle challenge!"

At that she returned her Pokemon and we headed over to the battle field, an open field of water with some platforms where Pokemon that didn't swim would be able to stand effectively. This way the gym could be accessible to different types of Pokemon not just Water Pokemon. The referee stepped forward to announce the rules. "This will be a two on two battle, please send out your Pokemon!"

At that Misty sent out her Starmie while I sent out my Pikachu. "A Pikachu, now that brings back memories, he's such a cutie too as well." Misty squealed causing Pikachu to turn and face me embarrassed at the complement. Before Pikachu realised this was a gym battle and prepared himself for a tough battle. "Starmie, use Psybeam on Pikachu!" Misty commanded and Starmie jumped into the air and fired a Psybeam. "Pikachu jump and dodge!"

Pikachu just barely managed to avoid the Psybeam and land safely pack on the undamaged platform. "Starmie use Swift!" Starmie used Swift a move which you couldn't dodge. "Pikachu use Light Screen!" At that Pikachu created a barrier which reduced the damage of Swift. Misty gritted her teeth at the defensive move and smiled. "Starmie, Rapid Spin!" Starmie had the perfect shape which allowed Rapid Spin to be so effective. "Counter that with Spark!"

The two Pokemon collide centre field, when the smoke cleared, the two Pokemon had slid back from the collision before they both paused observing one another. However, Starmie fainted and the referee announced our victory. Misty returned Starmie, "thank you Starmie, come back and take a nice rest" before she grabbed her second Pokeball. "Ordinarily I wouldn't use this specific Pokemon unless the challenger proved themselves to be quite powerful. I see that in you and your Pikachu. So lets see how you handle my Gyarados!"

At that she released her behemoth of a Pokemon Gyarados, I aimed my Rotom Phone at the incredible ferocious Pokemon. "Gyarados the Atrocious Pokemon, a Water and Flying Type. It has an extremely aggressive nature. The Hyper Beam it shoots from its mouth totally incinerates all targets." I looked nervous at the incredible Pokemon, knowing all about the tales of Gyarados, how they showed unrelenting rage against their opponents. Only really skilled trainers could bond with a Gyarados and work in harmony with them. That just goes to show Misty's incredible power as a trainer.

"Your not going first, then I will! Gyarados Rain Dance!" At that a cloud formed above Gyarados which sent a deluge of rain falling on the field. "Pikachu use Thunder Shock!" While Pikachu charged up a bolt of electricity, Gyarados dove under the water dodging the attack. "Gyarados use Whirlpool!" A sudden whirlpool surrounded Pikachu. "Use Double Team!" I hoped Double Team would be able to confuse Gyarados, but the Whirlpool was so powerful that Pikachu couldn't maintain the Double Team. "Gyarados use Hurricane!" At that Gyarados created a powerful Hurricane which blew Pikachu into the wall. "Pikachu is unable to battle, Gyarados is the winner!" The referee announced and I returned Pikachu.

"You did really well, good job hanging in there against such a Powerful Pokemon" at that I grabbed my next Pokemon "I need your help Ivysaur!" Ivysaur landed ready to battle, not at all fazed by the atrocious Pokemon in front of him. "Ivysaur use Sleep Powder!" I had hoped that using Sleep Powder would give me an advantage to end the battle before it could drag onwards. "That won't work, Gyarados blow it away with Hurricane!" An excellent move by Misty allowed her Gyarados to blow away the Sleep Powder, much to my shock. Ivysaur however, encouraged me not to give in.

"Ivysaur, power up with Growth!" While Ivysaur powered up, Misty observed curiously wondering what our new strategy would be. "Ivysaur drain Gyarados' energy, use Leech Seed!" Before Misty could even counterattack Gyarados was covered in vines which began sapping away Gyarados' strength. "Not bad, your planning on exhausting Gyarados since you can't outpower him, very clever." Misty complemented before she gave a new command. "Don't think you've won yet though, Gyarados break the vines!" Using it's monstrous strength Gyarados began ripping through the vines, but the process wasn't as fast as they had hoped.

"Ivysaur, we don't have much time, use Sleep Powder and then Razor Leaf!" At that Ivysaur sent some spores to cause Gyarados to fall asleep and then immediately fired Razor Leaf at the asleep Gyarados. Misty couldn't do anything except try and get Gyarados to somehow wake up. "Ivysaur, one more Razor Leaf should finish this battle!" Just as Gyarados awoke he was struck by a volley of Razor Leaf's and collapsed with a massive splash into the lake.

After a moment, the referee saw that Gyarados wasn't getting back up and announced the verdict. "Gyarados is unable to battle, Ivysaur's the winner and that means Leo wins the match!" I immediately cheered in excitement while Ivysaur jumped over to me eager to celebrate in his and Pikachu's victory. Misty observed the celebrating trainer and Pokemon smiling seeing such a strong resemblance to her friend and former companion Ash. Misty returned Gyarados before walking towards me with the gym badge in hand.

"Congratulations on winning! The bond between you and your Ivysaur and Pikachu was a sight to behold. Both you and your Pokemon working in complete synch. Well, this here is the Cascade Badge, proof that you've defeated me." At that she handed me the Cascade Badge and I placed it inside my badge case. "Thank you very much, that was really a tough battle!" I complemented Misty on her skills at raising Water Pokemon and hoped one day I would be able to have such a powerful Gyarados as well.

Now that I had two badges I decided to head south and make my way to Vermilion City and catch all the new Pokemon that I could.
