~Hello again, I know its been some time but I promise you that I have still been working. Here's something to tide you over while I keep working on other things. As before if you like it, tell me, if you hate it, tell me.~

"This will be my greatest invention yet," holding up a small gray box the pale skinned gentlemen exclaimed his greatness.

"Sure like the last one, or the one before that. You know my fur hasn't yet completely grown back yet," his vixen assistant called back without even looking up from her clipboard.

The laboratory was something out of a science fiction novel, large machines with magnetic recording film. Large numbers of glass and metal beakers, and white you could almost taste. But it was a job and she was happy for that, not that she didn't enjoy having a full coat or putting out fires daily. The pay was good most of it could be called hazard pay.

"So what does this one do, Willam," she asked putting the clipboard down on one of the empty examination tables.

"I'm glad you asked my dear," Willam smiled still holding the gray box, you know he's kind of cute when he tries to make suspense out of something that he puts together, she giggles to herself. "This box once activated makes the area it is occupying shift from the third dimension into what can only be called the x-dimension."

"Doesn't that seem a little dangerous," the vixen recalling every single invention and bit of progress that the good doctor has done over the last five years of her service. Not that most of it has helped the global community, "I mean the last time you started up a small gray box I had to run and get the fire extinguisher."

"I'm not working with heat this time Yavett, besides I've had some free time to work on a pet project of mine," Willam still holding the box placed his hand on a chalkboard and pulled it out into the room from its semi-hidden hole in the wall. On it was plans and mathematical equations all leading up to the picture of the box.

"I still think this is a bad idea," Yavett move the table she knew that there was no stopping him from attempting his new toy. She did have a bad feeling but when did science ever advance because someone was to scared to flip the switch. Just as she was about to shut the door and seal off the area for the test her phone began to ring, " Do you mind holding on for a second?" The doctor gave a nod and with that she pulled the phone out of her pocket. Flipping the phone open the picture was of her room mate, with a smirk she hit the answer button.

"What do you need Brian, are we out of hemorrhoid cream already," Yavett asked with as straight of a face as she could muster while messing with him.

"You know that wouldn't be a bad idea, for some reason I think that after you get done with that mad scientist of yours who knows what kind of diseases you'll bring home, " the male on the other end of the line laughed, she however was not amused and she quickly held the phone up to a magnet creating a loud screech of feedback.

Putting the phone back up to her ear, " You called me remember now what did you need we are about to do a test of the doctors new invention."

Unfortunately, before her room mate could answer there was a large crash and the room seemed like it was completely encased in jelleton. "What did you do," Yavett screamed into the room, hearing nothing she put the phone down on the closest table. Searching the laboratory she was finally able to find the doctor buried under what used to be an exam table.

With a cough Willam got up from under the debris, "That was strange," he said scratching his head.

"What was strange Willam, what did you do," Yavett was getting worried now when the doctor said strange he usually meant potentially dangerous. Instead of answering the question he just started walking around the lab, lifting debris and mumbling something to himself. With a sigh Yavett worked her way back to her phone and closed the lid she could always call him back if she wasn't dead. Suddenly Willam came rushing up to her, " Did you close the door, I mean I know that it went of by itself but tell me that you got the door closed." He was almost frantic, she had to tell him that she was on her way to do that when she got the phone call. Rushing out the door he almost knocked her over, "This isn't good, this is not going to end well."

Outside it was as if the world was just the same as in the lab, you could see the ripples made by each movement,

"Yavett, I need you to come with me. As it would seem the device is no longer in the lab."

"Great, so we are looking for a box sized needle in a haystack am I right," in all the time that she had been working with him she always had to help fix whatever mishap that he had created and she wasn't even the one getting the funding. It would be nice to get all that money for just sitting around and occasionally producing something that could end all life on the planet. But she didn't think that she could handle all the power, she might actually try and do just that.

"Do we even know if this think will turn off on its own, I mean it did turn on by itself who's to say that it won't just turn off," she asked following behind the man in the lab coat.

"I couldn't tell you for sure but even if it does we need to find it and get its power source taken out so it can't just turn back on again. But this is very interesting, I always wanted to swim in a pool of Jello now I can walk through it and I didn't even have to spend the money buying the jelleton mix."

With a raised eyebrow, "Do you even hear yourself talk sometimes," Yavett did as she was asked and began looking with Willam around the complex for his invention. Her paws aching she hated walking on pavement she much preferred grass. She had always figured it to be left over from when she was feral, and that was another thing she really needed to talk to the doctor about. She hadn't asked to become an anthro creature, but she wasn't completely sure that he was the cause of that. Millions had become anthros without his involvement she was sure of that, but for right now getting out of this particular problem that he had gotten them into was more important then her own wants.

Making her way towards the fence she suddenly felt like someone was following her, looking around she saw no one. She got closer to the fence and began her search, for some reason just outside the fence things seemed to be normal almost moving faster then normal, leaning down to look under a pile of concrete piping she was surprised getting pounced on and pulled away from the fence just as a bolt of electricity struck the ground were she was standing. Thrashing about she finally was able to get free of the grip and flipped over every muscle in her body was tensed and ready for a fight. Looking up she became very confused standing before her was not the attacker that she would have expected instead it was a little girl. A very naked little girl from what she noticed just after the shock of someone so small dragging her like a rag doll.

"Are you lost," she asked as kindly as she could muster, she still was a little miffed and her tail had yet relaxed and still looked like a bottle brush.

"No I'm were I'm supposed to be," she said with a sickeningly sweet voice, "You seem to be more lost then I ever could be. Did you lose something?"

"Yeah, actually I'm looking for a small box, have you seen it?"

"No I don't think I have," she puts a finger to her lips thinking, "but I'll be more then happy to help look for it."

With a sigh Yavett agrees and after she gets up she takes off her lab coat she wraps it around the child who looks at her confused but accepts it with a smile. The two of them spend hours searching the area and end up back at the lab.

Panting from all the exercise that she went through that day she was ready to pass out. Not far behind her Willam too had come up empty in his search of the area and was more then a little worried. That all seemed to go away when his eyes gazed upon the little girl now clothed in scrubs that were much too big for her.

Pulling Yavett to the side, "Who is that," he asked his hands holding Yavett's arms in a panic.

Wiggling out from his grasp, "I not sure, she saved me from being tomorrows ribs. We looked for your box," she paused a moment, "We couldn't find it."

"I know, it doesn't seem to be anywhere around. We however do have another problem, we can't leave."

"And you know this because you tried I'm guessing," receiving a nod she drooped her head. "So what do we do now," she asked the open air.

"Why don't you ask it to stop," the tiny voice chimes in her small hands trying desperately to keep her scrub pants from falling to the ground.

Kneeling down and tugging on the rope straps until they were tight enough to hold up on there own Yavett looked at the girl, "What makes you think that will work?"

"Being nice always works," was her only reply.

The two of them looked at each other, Willam shrugged and the two of them at once, " We would like it if all this stopped and everything was back to normal," and with a smile the little girl closed her eyes and with that everything changed back. They no longer had trouble moving, the ripples that were caused by there movements no longer showed, and sitting on the ground at the two of there feet the small box sat as if it had been there the whole time. The little girl smiled, "You see being nice always works."

After this the two of them went on to deal with the power issue in the box, having already tested it a further one was not necessary. The little girl however with no home and no family didn't have much of a choice when it came down to how she would live. The options that the doctor and his assistant put forward were not good enough. She refused to go to some orphanage, she didn't want to be taken in by the state her life was something different and the two of them could see that. Finally, Yavett took the lead. She would stay with her, why not I've got an empty room and it would be good to keep her from the doctor.

And so it was, Halena as she was calling herself now, much better then x-589 as Willam wanted. I'm sure he's still going to us it though, she through to herself as the two of them drove down the road towards the city. She didn't know how she was going to break the news to Brian she hadn't yet returned his call from earlier and had no idea what he was needing from the store.

"Would you mind handing me my phone," she asked Halena as they parked at the convenience store. The girl fumbled with the purse and it took a moment for her to wade through all of the things that the vixen kept with her.

Producing the phone Yavett hit the redial button and after three rings the phone picked up.

"Were have you been, I called you like ten times before I gave up," Brian actually sounded worried about her, "So are you going to tell me what happened or am I going to have to guess, or can I not even guess cause then I'll get picked up by some guys in black suits and sunglasses." He wasn't joking ether he had guessed once and the next thing

Yavett knew she was picking him up from the military base with a bag over his head.

"No it's nothing like that, and I'll explain everything when I get home. What did you need me to pick up," she asked as she looked over at Halena and mouthed, stay in the car, to her as she got out and walked to the door.

He's crazy, why does he always do that. It was his turn to stock the kitchen, she was doing her best to carry the seven or so bags and fumble with her peruse to get the keys to the door. The girl was standing there distracted by a butterfly or something, at this point she didn't care she just wanted to get into the building and put these bags down.

She was finally able to get everything just right and the two of them made there way into the building. Up the endless flights of steps that lead up to the forth floor, I will be so happy when they get that elevator fixed, she thought to herself as the two of them rounded the last corner and up the last flight of steps. Her apartment just happened to be at the end of the hall on the east side, she would stay up sometimes and watch the sun come up. Something had to be said for the view on the forth floor, just low enough to see the skyline but not high enough to have to look down to far to see the street below.

Putting the key into the door she unlocked the deadbolt and turned the knob, the door swung open silently into the dark living area. Halena closed the door behind them, Yavett placed the bags on the kitchen table and turned on the lights leaving the room with a half lit glow. Brian was passed out on the couch clutching one of his hard-backed books. Keeping as quiet as she could she put up the stuff that couldn't wait until he woke up.

As quietly as she could without actually being silent, "This will be your room," she was standing at the door to the room across the hall from the half bath in the apartment. Opening the door and flipping on the switch the room lit up.

"Right now all we are using this space for is extra storage," she said looking over the mountain of boxes stacked in the corner, "we can get them out as soon as he wakes up."

"Thank you, but you don't have to rush,"Halena said with a upbeat tone, "Am I going back there with you again?"

"I would think so, the doctor almost made me promise to bring you back. You do know all he wants to do is study you right," Yavett didn't want to tell the girl this, but the truth was better then being lied to any day.

"I know, but I just want to stay around you. Your my first friend ever," the little girl said sitting down on the floor and crossed her legs.

Grabbing a blanket from the hall closet she walks back into the room and sits down next to Halena, "Can I ask you something," she waited for the little girl to nod, "Were did you come from, I mean that area is under twenty-four hour surveillance. If you had gotten in at any other time you would have been spotted and detained."

Halena smiled and took the blanket and wrapped up in it. She thought for a moment, "I am not quite sure how to answer that, you see I've always been there. It's just one of those things that just is I guess," she said as her stomach started to growl and a confused look passed between her and Yavett.

The vixen smiled, "I guess you also never had to eat ether," she got up and made the girl a sandwich and brought the food in to her. Handing over the plate the girl ate the sandwich quickly. "So I'm guessing that you need to get some sleep, so I'll leave you to it," Yavett turned and began to leave but as she did the girl grabbed her leg wrapping her arms around it.

"Please stay."

A little stunned she nodded, "yeah, I'll stay just give me a minute to change ok," with a sigh the girl let go of her leg.

As promised she changed out of her close and into something a little more comfortable to sleep in. Grabbing her pillow from her bed she brought it and another into the room and the two of them laid there the little girl curled up against the vixen the smile on her face not going away for a second.
