#3 of Pokemon - To Catch Them All

Leo challenges Pewter's Gym and explores Mt Moon

For the next few hours, I continued training everybody, switching my team around to ensure everybody got some time in the sun. Squirtle had learned some new moves as well. Squirtle now knew, Water Gun, Rapid Spin, Withdraw and Water Pulse. Bulbasaur had Vine Whip, Growth, Leech Seed and Razor Leaf. The other team members had been steadily improving as well.

Eventually, I left Viridian Forest and headed to the north where the forest began clearing away and I arrived at the north of Route 2, I breezed through the route, passing through many wild Pokemon which attempted to slow me down and trainers, who wanted to challenge themselves and see whether they were prepared to battle the gym leader Forrest in Pewter City.

All the talk about gym battles made me wonder, did I want to challenge gyms when my goal was to catch every Pokemon and not become the champion. I mean I could battle gym leaders and just not challenge the Pokemon league. I decided that ultimately, it wasn't just my decision and decided to ask my Pokemon right before we entered Pewter City.

"Come out everyone!" due to limits I could only bring out the current six Pokemon, that was, Squirtle, Bulbasaur, Pidgey, Oddish, Nidoran Male and Butterfree. "I can't ask everyone at the same time, I wanted to know what you wanted to do. You see, I want to go travel around every region and catch every Pokemon, that's my dream. However, I wanted to know whether you wanted to challenge gyms." The Pokemon seemed curious, likely not knowing what gym battles were. "Gyms are special facilities, in which the gym leader challenges trainers to better themselves and when they win, they are given a badge." Almost immediately every Pokemon cheered and decided they wanted to challenge the gyms.

Upon checking with the other team members they all agreed as well, so it was unanimous. I returned everyone except Squirtle and walked around Pewter City. My first destination was the Pokemon centre, it was getting late and realistically I and my Pokemon needed rest before challenging a gym. Entering the centre, I handed over my Pokemon to Nurse Joy who healed them and returned them to me. "Do you have any rooms available?" I asked Nurse Joy who smiled and nodded.

"Yes, you can have room 2, follow the corridor to your left and use this room key." As she handed me the room key. Leaving I headed to the room and dozed off rather quickly, exhausted from my recent captures.

Early the next morning I was awoken by several lumps on my bed, opening my eyes, I saw all off my Pokemon on my bed impatiently waiting for me to wake up, eventually I conceded and got out of bed and did my morning routine. Leaving the room, I handed the key back to Nurse Joy, but before I headed to the gym I decided to give my mother a call. "Leo, how are you doing?" My mother seemed happy to hear my voice even if it was over the phone. "I'm doing great, I've caught many Pokemon and I'm challenging the gym in Pewter City today!"

I must of sounded excited as my mother replied "good luck and have fun!" At that the call was ended and I left the centre. On my way to the gym I had done some research on the Pewter City Gym. The gym was formerly run by Brock, however, he had travelled the regions studying to become a Pokemon Doctor. Now he had appointed one of his brothers, named Forrest to be his successor. The Pewter Gym also specialised in Rock Type Pokemon, meaning I knew exactly who to use, Bulbasaur, who was part Grass Type and Squirtle who was a Water Type. Both were super effective against Rock Pokemon. That's not too say I didn't believe the match would be easy.

Upon entering the gym, my nerves skyrocketed, walking nervously, I entered the main field, seeing who I presumed was the gym leader and he didn't look that old either, Obviously I was aware he was younger as he was the former gym leaders younger brother. "Excuse me! I'm here for a gym battle!" I announced hoping my voice didn't betray my nerves however, Forrest smiled and walked towards me. "Understood, my name is Forrest and I'm the gym leader. As I'm sure you know, I specialise in Rock Pokemon. Since I assume this is your first gym battle, I'll have the referee explain the rules to you."

At that he headed over the the opposite side of the field as he prepared, while the referee explained the rules, most of which I was already familiar with, this gym would consist of two Pokemon and that whoever fainted the other sides Pokemon, they would be declared the victor. The rules were now memorised and the referee spoke once again to reiterate the rules.

"The gym match will now begin, both sides please send out your Pokemon." At that I sent out Bulbasaur, while Forrest started with a Rhyhorn. "Rhyhorn huh?" I pointed my Rotom Phone at the new Pokemon, "Rhyhorn the Spikes Pokemon, a Ground and Rock Pokemon. Strong, but not too bright, this Pokemon can shatter a skyscraper with its charging tackles."

"Battle start!" The referee declared and Forrest immediately attacked, "Rhyhorn use Tackle!" Rhyhorn may have looked slow, but it sure moved faster than I expected. "Bulbasaur, use Razor Leaf!" Bulbasaur launched power Razor Leaf's directly at the Rhyhorn, Rhyhorn's body managed to block most of the leaves but they definitely did some serious damage, based on how Rhyhorn seemed to be breathing.

Unfortunately, I wasn't fast enough and Bulbasaur couldn't dodge the incoming Tackle, which did a large amount of damage, "Leech Seed go!" Bulbasaur launched small seeds at Rhyhorn, which wrapped themselves around Rhyhorn, not only draining him of energy but also managing to slow the Pokemon down. Forrest could clearly see he was in a bind, his Rhyhorn new no moves which could escape the bind and as such there wasn't much he could do.

"Bulbasaur Razor Leaf, wrap this battle up!" I instructed and Bulbasaur sent the Razor Leaf barrelling towards Rhyhorn who was soon knocked out and thanks to the victory, Bulbasaur began glowing a vibrant blue, signalling his evolution. Forrest paused watching intrigued at the evolution, that he didn't necessarily expect. Eventually the glow faded and Bulbasaur was replaced by Ivysaur. Rotom updated the Pokedex for me as well, "Ivysaur, the Seed Pokemon, a Grass and Poison Type. Exposure to sunlight adds to its strength. Sunlight also makes the bulb on its back grow larger."

At that Ivysaur turned towards me smiling happily, Forrest chuckled, "Not often when I'm challenged do I see an evolution, but its always wonderful to see Pokemon and trainer working in harmony and believing in one another." Forrest sighed, "the battle isn't over yet though, my ace is raring to go, Onix come on out." From his Pokeball burst forth a Onix, a large and powerful looking Pokemon. I raised my Rotom Phone to see about the Pokemon looming above me. "Onix, the Rock Snake Pokemon a Rock and Ground Type Pokemon. As it digs through the ground, it absorbs many hard objects. This is what makes its body so solid."

Just seeing such a large Pokemon gave me goose bumps, but Ivysaur remained focused, "Ivysaur return for now" I spoke again to reassure him when he was in his Pokeball, "I know you just evolved and could likely win the battle, I would also like to get Squirtle in the action." At that I threw Squirtle's Pokeball out on the field, "come out Squirtle!" Forrest was interested, "First Bulbasaur and now a Squirtle, you've definitely done your due diligence and trained your Pokemon rather well. Looks like I'm really backed into a corner now. But a gym leader can never give up and neither should you!"

At that Forrest began, "Onix use Rock Throw!" At that Onix slammed his tail into the ground hurling several rocks right to Squirtle, "knock then all down with Water Pulse." The upgraded power of Water Pulse looked like a great match against Rock Throw as all the rocks were smashed to pieces. However, Onix had dug underground using his attacks as a diversion.

"Careful Squirtle, we don't know where it will pop out!" Squirtle nodded his head, focusing around him, trying to feel where Onix would come from, however, no amount of speed could allow Squirtle to dodge the incoming Dig from such a large Onix. Squirtle was hurled through the air and landed painfully into the ground. He shakily stood up but seemed in bad shape. "Keep up the pressure Onix, use Bind!" Onix charged towards Squirtle, who was struggling to stand up, but wasn't quick enough to dodge the Bind.

"Don't worry Squirtle, I know how powerful you are, use Water Pulse!" At that Squirtle smirked and launched his most powerful Water Pulse right towards Onix's face which freed Squirtle and knocked Onix out almost immediately. "Onix is unable to battle and that means the victor is Leo from Viridian City." As Forrest returned his Onix to his Pokeball giving him his congratulations for putting up such an incredible fight against a type he was naturally weak against. I witnessed my very first Pokemon undergo an evolution which excited me. Since I had trained Bulbasaur, now Ivysaur and Squirtle extensively I knew they were similarly levelled and if one evolved the other would follow suit.

Eventually the glow faded and Squirtle was replaced with a Wartortle, Rotom updated the index for me as well, "Wartortle has been registered to your Pokedex, Wartortle the Turtle Pokemon and a Water Type. It is recognised as a symbol of longevity. If its shell has algae on it, that Wartortle is very old." I smiled joyfully, catching Wartortle has he leaped into my arms cheering happily. Forrest walked over smiling, seeing such a close bond between Pokemon and trainer once again. "Congratulations Leo, I got too overconfident thinking that your Squirtle was weakened by the Dig and would be easy prey. However, you remained calm and your strategy was as solid as the rocks my Pokemon are made off. As a result you have earned this, the Boulder Badge!"

At that he handed me the badge and I placed it inside the badge case, I smiled at the badge and watched as Wartortle cheered even louder than before. At that I left the gym and returned to the Pokemon centre to heal both Ivysaur and Wartortle even though the match was relatively easy compared to what I was expecting. I wondered if I had battled the former gym leader Brock would I have faced a far more powerful opponent.

Once my Pokemon were healed I released everyone wanting to show them two new evolutions, "everybody I would like you to meet the newest evolutions, Wartortle and Ivysaur, who earned us the Boulder Badge!" Everyone cheered and offered their congratulations towards the two starters who took their complements with pride. "I've done some more research and we have a ways to go before we reach the next gym and it's a Water Type gym as well." The Pokemon seemed confident they would be prepared especially with how much training they had all received.

Before leaving Pewter City I headed over to the Pokemart and brought several healing items and more Pokeballs as no doubt there would be even more new Pokemon awaiting me that I would have to catch.

Exiting onto Route 3 I asked Rotom what Pokemon were found here and was happy to see some new potential catches being Ekans, Sandshrew, Mankey and what could be even more shocking was the potential that there were Charmander's living somewhere near here.

Before challenging any trainers, I wanted to try and catch every Pokemon which was available, searching through the grass I spotted the newest Pokemon, a Sandshrew which was a Ground type Pokemon. "Oddish come on out!" Oddish was released and ready to help me catch the cute Sandshrew, "Oddish use Sleep Powder!" At that Oddish released spores, which when they landed on Sandshrew they put him asleep. "Pokeball go!" Since Sandshrew was asleep the capture was surprisingly easy. "Sandshrew has been registered to your Pokedex, Sandshrew the Mouse Pokemon, a Ground Type. It burrows into the ground to create its nest. If hard stones impede its tunnelling, it uses its hard claws to scatter them and then carries on digging."

Next up was Ekans a Poison Type, after some deliberation, I sent out Butterfree, "Butterfree I need your help!" At that Butterfree appeared ready for battle. Ekans didn't seem to happy at being disturbed and fired off Poison Sting, "dodge those Butterfree!" I instructed and Butterfree immediately dodged the incoming attack. "Now Butterfree use Stun Spore!" Butterfree like Oddish released a powder which when came into contact by Ekans made the Ekans unable to move. "Wrap this up using Psybeam!" Butterfree used the Psybeam which was super effective and weakened Ekans to the point of capture.

"Ekans has been registered to your Pokedex. Ekans, the Snake Pokemon, a Poison Type. By dislocating its jaw, it can swallow prey larger than itself. After a meal it curls up and rests." The next Pokemon I found was the Fighting Type Mankey, "your up Pidgey!" Pidgey appeared ready to battle, "use Wing Attack!" Pidgey flew directly toward Mankey and whacked the Mankey with it's wing, knocking it down in just one hit. "Pokeball go!" As I watched the Pokeball shake, once, twice and three times before the capture was confirmed. "Mankey has been registered to your Pokedex, Mankey the Pig Monkey Pokemon, a Fighting Type. The smallest of things could cause it to lose its temper. Becuase it doesn't hold in stress, this Pokemon can't live a long time."

Hearing that Pokedex entry saddened me and I hoped that perhaps training with me, might calm down the ever angry Pokemon and ensure he lived a happy fulfilled life. My sadness was interrupted when as a result of the brief battle, Pidgey began glowing, signalling an evolution, when the glow faded, Pidgey was replaced by Pidgeotto. Rotom updated the new evolution to my index, "Pidgeotto, the Bird Pokemon, a Normal and Flying Type. Pidgeotto claims a large area as its territory This Pokemon flies around patrolling its living space. If its territory is violated, it shows no mercy in thoroughly punishing the foe with its sharp claws." Pidgeotto flew around getting used to its new body before he landed on my shoulder and there was a definite weight increase though not by much. I congratulated Pidgeotto on evolving and he seemed ecstatic at the praise.

For the next few hours I healed my Pokemon and continued searching through the grass to see if a Charmander might be lurking somewhere inside, however, it seemed as though they were truly very rare. While searching I began training Ekans, Mankey and Sandshrew against the wild Pokemon and they seemed to be steadily levelling up. Mankey was a very energetic Pokemon, sometimes picking fights with the wild Pokemon all on his own, I wasn't concerned though, as I knew he was more than capable of taking care of himself.

Ekans however, seemed to be the opposite a rather uninterested Pokemon, I mean off course Ekans liked battling and travelling with me, however he preferred to take things slow and as they come, not go looking for fights. Ekans even enjoyed wrapping his snake like body around my arms whenever he felt like it. Sandshrew was the quietest off all my new team members he liked to scuttle on over to me whenever he felt pressured by something or someone. He had also made a good friendship with both of my Nidoran's as well.

Eventually after what seemed like hours, I spotted a familiar shape in the grass, it was a Charmander, or rather a Charmander's tail, scuttling through the grass attempting to remain unseen. When the Charmander looked around, it realised it had been spotted and dashed not away from me, but towards me instead. This Charmander's personality stood out to me as a rather pompous and arrogant Pokemon, seemingly confident in his own abilities.

It did make me wonder, had he been released by a trainer who couldn't keep up with this Charmander's specific demands, he sure seemed like a Pokemon which required extreme maintenance and exercise but I was up for the challenge. "Come on out Wartortle!" When Wartortle appeared, Charmander didn't seem nervous, no Charmander appeared to be even more exhilarated.

Before I could even utter a command, Charmander began, his claws shining with Scratch, "Wartortle duck in your shell!" Wartortle's shell easily blocked the Scratches, it also allowed Wartortle to prepare for his finishing move. "Water Pulse!" At close range, Charmander didn't have much time to react as he was struck by the super effective Water Pulse. Seems his confidence may have been his ultimate downfall. "Pokeball go!" The Pokeball shook, once twice and three times before the catch was confirmed. "Charmander has been registered to your Pokedex, Charmander the Lizard Pokemon, a Fire Type. It has a preference for hot things. When it rains steam is said to spout from the tip of its tail."

I released the Charmander, who seemed sour about his defeat. "Hey don't be sad, I was really impressed with your courage, tenacity and speed. So what if you lost, there's always room for improvement." Charmander seemed to accept the motivational words and smiled, before holding his hand towards Wartortle who smiled and accepted the hand of friendship. After checking with Rotom about what Pokemon lived in the area, I was happy that I had caught the Pokemon which lived in the area.

Route 3, was also quite compact with trainers, trainers that all had stronger Pokemon so they would be good training opportunities for my new and old Pokemon. While battling I did change around my Pokemon every now and then to ensure that every Pokemon managed to get some battling experience no matter how powerful they were.

The first trainer I faced had boasted about defeating Forrest with his Bulbasaur without any effort at all, I also showed him by Boulder Bage and he challenged me to a battle. "Bulbasaur come on out!" He said as his Bulbasaur appeared battle ready, "it's your turn Charmander, show them how strong you are!" Charmander appeared, spewing embers threateningly.

"Bulbasaur use Vine Whip!" Bulbasaur's vines extended and lunged towards Charmander, "Charmander use Smokescreen and hide yourself!" The smoke obscured Bulbasaur's vision and as such the Vine Whip failed. "Charmander charge forward, use Ember!" Charmander having known where Bulbasaur was, charged forward and used Ember knocking out Bulbasaur thanks to some excellent strategy. Charmander cheered at his victory before we moved onwards.

The next trainer had a Rattata, which was put up against my Bellsprout, even though it had been a while since Bellsprout had battled, his Vine Whip was still strong enough to defeat the youngsters Rattata with relative ease. A gardener also challenged me with his respective Oddish and as such Spearow handled that battle relatively easy with a Peck.

No matter how many trainers challenged us, every one of my Pokemon gained some good battling experience, though I did notice that Nidoran male and female seemed to getting relatively close to their evolutions. Thus I decided to continue training them the most. Both Nidoran were more than powerful enough to defeat their opponents.

Heading north I reached Route 4, a rather small and unassuming route, however, the route was connected by Mt Moon. I entered the Pokemon centre before entering Mt Moon to heal my Pokemon before heading to the mountain. While I waited for my Pokemon to be healed, a man approached me, "young man! Have I got a deal for you! This here is a Magikarp quite a rare Pokemon, it can be yours for 500 Pokemon dollars, what do you say?" I wasn't fooled by the apparent rarity of Magikarp, I knew they were exceptionally common. However. at the current moment I didn't have a fishing rod and therefore couldn't catch a Magikarp yet. So even though the price was outrageous and I was being ripped off I paid the money and received a Magikarp.

"Magikarp has been registered to your Pokedex. Magikarp the Fish Pokemon, a Water Type. It is virtually worthless in terms of both power and speed. It is the most weak and pathetic Pokemon in the world." While the Pokedex entry for Magikarp may be true and harsh. I believed with time, Magikarp would overcome those words and become one of the strongest Pokemon there was.

When I entered Mt Moon, it was so dark, but luckily, having Charmander with me, his tail could create some light which allowed me to see the path ahead. The light from Charmander's tail did attract one Pokemon a Zubat which flew down to attack the Pokemon creating such a bright light. "Use Scratch!" Charmander scratched the approaching Zubat knocking it down to the ground. "Pokeball go!" At that the Pokeball shook, once, twice, three times before the catch was confirmed.

"Zubat has been registered to your Pokedex. Zubat the Bat Pokemon, a Poison and Flying Type. It emites ultrasonic waves from its mouth to check its surroundings. Even in tight caves, Zubat flies around with skill." At that I pocketed Zubat's Pokeball and continued through the dark cave, glad that I had caught Charmander which helped me see through the cave albeit barely.

I almost stumbled over what I had at first thought was a rock however, the rock looked different and leaning closer, I was surprised, when the rock turned out to be a Geodude, which wasn't happy about being disturbed. "Charmander, Geodude's a Rock Pokemon, we'll be at a serious disadvantage against that but I believe in you!"

At that Charmander regained his confidence and awaited my instructions. Geodude wasn't happy about all the waiting and charged forward using Tackle, however, lucky for me, Geodude were not known for their speed. "Charmander dodge and then use Ember!" Charmander managed to dodge the approaching Geodude and launched a flurry of Embers at the Geodude. When they landed they did hardly any damage much to Charmander's frustration.

Geodude used Rock Throw and sent several rocks to Charmander and without even a command, Charmander dodged the rocks, "use Ember once again!" Knowing that Ember would do hardly any damage, Geodude rushed forward using Tackle again however, when the Embers struck Geodude's body he paused feeling a burning sensation around him. Turns out Charmander had gotten lucky and his Ember flurry had scored a burn on Geodude.

Using the moment I threw a Pokeball at the Geodude and watched as the Pokeball shook once, twice, three times before the capture was confirmed. Rotom registered the Geodude for me on the Pokedex. "Geodude has been registered to your Pokedex. Geodude the Rock Pokemon, a Rock Ground Type. It uses both hands to climb precipitous cliffs. People who have seen it in action have been known to take up bouldering." I pocked Geodude's Pokeball and continued travelling through Mt Moon.

Continuing through the mountain I spotted a Clefairy, a Pokemon that was considered to be quite rare around Mt Moon. "Charmander ready to go once more?" I asked and Charmander jumped down and darted towards the Clefairy, who jumped not expecting a trainer to be inside Mt Moon. "Charmander use Scratch!" As Charmander darted towards Clefairy, Clefairy countered rolling into a small ball, using Defence Curl to raise its own defence. Charmander tried pushing with more force but the Clefairy had too high of a defence.

"Then we'll change out moves too, use Ember!" Charmander fired a flurry of Embers but Clefairy managed to dodge, "try again" I instructed but again Clefairy effectively dodged. "Use Smokescreen" At that Charmander spewed out a cloud of smoke which blocked everyones visibility. "Charmander when you can see Clefairy use Scratch!" I instructed and although I couldn't see Charmander could sense Clefairy and struck using Scratch. Clefairy was flung backwards and collapsed allowing me to throw a Pokeball. I watched as the Pokeball shook, once twice before the Pokeball broke open.

Clefairy seemed to be getting up and started to use Sing. "Charmander use Ember again and again!" I knew that if Sing worked then Charmander would be asleep and in a cave that wouldn't be good at all. However, Charmander managed to just barely stay awake and launched an Ember. Clefairy who had been singing was incapable of dodging and was flung to the ground once again. This time when I threw a Pokeball the Clefairy was caught. "Clefairy has been registered to your Pokedex. Clefairy, the Fairy Pokemon, a Fairy Type. Its adorable behaviour and cry make it highly popular. However this cute Pokemon is rarely found."

While exploring I came across two trainers who wanted to have a double battle and that was what I was hoping for, "come out Nidoran" both Nidoran male and female appeared happy to be battling alongside one another. The two trainers sent out Geodude's. "Nidoran both of you use Poison Sting!" The trainers countered by having both of their Geodude's use Harden which raised their defence and as such the Poison Sting bounced off their bodies.

"Perhaps a double, Double Kick will seal the deal?" I said as both Nidoran jumped in the air and descended on the helpless Geodude's. Thanks to the super effective move, both Geodude's fainted and as a result both of my Nidoran's began evolving. The male Nidoran evolved into a Nidorino. "Nidorino has been registered to your Pokedex, Nidorino the Poison Pin Pokemon a Poison Type. With a horn that's harder than diamond, this Pokemon goes around shattering boulders as it searches for a Moon Stone." I looked towards the female Nidoran who had evolved into a Nidorina. "Nidorina has been registered to your Pokedex, Nidorina the Poison Pin Pokemon, a Poison Type. If the group is threatened, these Pokemon will band together to assault enemies with a chorus of ultrasonic waves."

Both Nidorino and Nidorina ran towards me, they seemed happy that they two had evolved into their next forms and I was just as happy as they were. As the Pokedex stated, Nidorino walked alongside me as I traversed through Mt Moon, Nidorino began shattering every boulder in sight as he searched for a multitude of Moon Stones. I knew that Moon Stones were rare but as we travelled Nidorino had found a respective three Moon Stones. At the moment they didn't want to evolve and I didn't think it was worth evolving them already so I pocketed the Moon Stones for a later date.

Continuing exploring I found a Paras, a surprising Pokemon to be found inside a cave, dark and dreary, "Charmander use Ember please" at that Paras was defeated and I threw a Pokeball, "Paras has been registered to your Pokedex, Paras the Mushroom Pokemon, a Bug and Grass Pokemon. Burrows under the ground to gnaw on tree roots. The mushrooms on its back absorb most of the nutrition." I pocked the Pokeball and continued onward.

Eventually I came across a ladder and descended several levels down, following the cave, there were the same Pokemon around, however, up on the very top of the passage. I saw two fossils, or what I believed were fossils. "Rotom are these fossils?" I asked and Rotom replied, "yes, the one on the left is a Helix Fossil and the one on the right is a Dome Fossil." I'd never seen a fossil before so I decided to take them both and get them restored into Pokemon that they once were upon a time in the past.

Following the cavern I headed up another ladder, where I could see the exit, however before I could leave there was a huge rumble coming from behind me, turning around I saw a Onix digging through the ground to where I was. "Come on out Wartortle!" I knew that no matter how powerful Charmander was becoming, he didn't stand much of a chance against an Onix. "Use Water Pulse!" However, Onix dug underground and dodged the attack, much like Forrest's Onix had done as well.

However, that meant we had an idea as to what the Onix would do and as such when the Onix tried to surprise Wartortle he wasn't fazed and fired a Water Pulse directly at the surprised Onix who smashed down to the ground. After throwing a Pokeball the catch was confirmed and realistically I had believed Onix would be the toughest Pokemon to catch since it was so powerful in comparison to other Pokemon I'd seen.

"Onix has been registered to your Pokedex, Onix the Rock Snake Pokemon, a Rock and Ground Type. It rapidly bores through the ground at 50mph by squirming and twisting its massive body." After that catch I checked my Pokedex and was happy to learn I had caught every Pokemon that had inhabited Mt Moon and what perfect timing as well. Upon leaving the cave it was back to Route 4 and soon Cerulean City, sight of the second gym.
