#2 of Micro Stories

My submission for Wild North Con 2021!

At the shore of an island were three pirate ships. There were three sets of footprints that led through a

bamboo jungle to a clearing. In the center of the clearing stood a treasure chest with gold metal trim and a lock.

Three figures were surrounding the chest, with all of their weapons at the ready. They were all pirates, fighting amongst each

other for the treasure chest. The two figures left of the chest were Captain Clawbeard and his green parrot named Squax perched

on his shoulder. Clawbeard was a black bear with a red pirate coat, golden buttons, and a black captain hat. He fashioned a cutlass

and had a right wooden peg leg.

"You're not getting the treasure, you swashbucklers!" Clawbeard yelled, shaking his sword at the other figures.

"Oh really? I've got the map, so I deserve the treasure!" the pirate to the right of the chest shouted. Unlike Clawbeard, Pawbeard was a brown bear in a

green pirate garment. With his left hand, he held a rapier. He had a parrot sitting on his shoulder as well. The feathers of the parrot were red, and his name was

"Stand down, or you will go down," said Captain Jawbeard, a polar bear that had a black pirate coat, black captain hat, and a fluffy yellow parrot on his

shoulder named Kaw. Jawbeard had a patch on his right eye since he became half-blind after fighting a Kraken in the past. He held a multi-barreled gun,

pointed it at Pawbeard.

Pointing his weapon at Clawbeard, he cried out, "I didn't forget about you! Don't you dare go towards the treasure!" Each captain barreled to the

treasure chest after a bit of deliberation, growling, and staring each other down. The parrots on each captain's shoulders flew to a high branch of a tree

to avoid an attack.

"You don't even have the key to open the chest, Jawbeard!" Clawbeard exclaimed, trying to wrangle the chest from the other captains.

Pawbeard shouted, "Neither do you, you scurvy ursidae!"

"Wait! None of us have the key?" Jawbeard asked, pausing his struggle for the treasure chest. Suddenly, a deep voice from afar boomed out,

"Yo ho ho! Why are you fighting, hearties?"

Every captain turned to see who was speaking. A giant, burly figure burst in through the bamboo trees and roared. The figure was a panda bear

with a brown pirate coat and a scar under his right eye.

All at the same time, the three captains shouted with surprised faces, "Dad?!" The panda laughed heartily.

"I am known in the high seas as Captain Mawbeard, but yes, I am your Dad. You three have grown up so much!" Mawbeard exclaimed. Hearing

that the commotion has died down, Squax, Tweet, and Kaw flew back on their respective captain's shoulders. Seeing the parrots fly down made Mawbeard

happy.

"It's great to see you have pets to take care of, too! Now, why were you fighting for that treasure chest?" he asked.

"There's gold in here that could make me rich for the rest of my life!" Clawbeard answered.

"Enough!" Mawbeard yelled angrily. "You shouldn't be fighting for this treasure chest. Besides, you should all share it amongst each other."

Then, he pulled out a golden key from his pocket. The brothers gasped. They were only aware of the location of the treasure chest but had no idea

where the key was. It turns out their father kept the chest key to himself so that no one had access to the contents. Mawbeard walked up to the front

of the chest, inserted the key into the lock, and turned it. There was a click that echoed in the ambiance. Slowly, he opened the lid, and blinding light

flooded out from the chest. Inside was a painted portrait of a female bear in a silver metal frame.

"That's mother," Jawbeard said softly. He then started to tear up. His brothers saw this and also began crying. They all hugged each other,

being happy but sobbing at the same time. Mawbeard also came to tears and then hugged all of his sons.

"I'm so glad we can all share this treasure," Mawbeard said. In the final hours of the day, the father and sons bonded over memories of their

mother who had passed. The sun went down, and all of the pirates fell asleep happy with their reunion.
