Part XXI: Bookkeeper

Fellglow Keep, the place a bunch of college dropouts called home, was just to the north so I figured why not take care of it now.

It was a mistake. We didn't get far when a Dark Brotherhood assassin tried to kill me. She was quick, but I was quicker. And she was sloppy. I sensed her approach before she got to me. It would have been better to wait until I was occupied then attacked. Too bad she didn't carry any information on her, just a note confirming I pissed someone off royally. I had no idea who wanted me dead or why. I pissed off a lot of people and in Cyrodiil there was a bounty on my head--a small one that only rookies would want to go after though. This was the first time anyone serious had come after me.

Shit! I can't look after Khash if I have assassins on my tail! Serana mentioned that it would be a while before anyone else would come looking. But it didn't make me feel better. I needed a way to get these assassins off my back.

We continued after our distraction and came across a shrine of Talos buried under a hill. Luckily it was abandoned. Unluckily, we found out why. The Thalmor had gotten there first and were waiting to ambush anyone who showed up. I didn't even believe in the Divines, not that they wanted to hear it. On the upside, they were used to dealing with pilgrims and farmers, not seasoned adventurers. We all agreed to stay away from random Talos shrines in the future.

Speaking of poor defense and coordination, Fellglow definitely was underprepared. Whoever these mages were, they were confident or stupid. A few novices had been assigned guard duty. I knew they were novices because their flesh spells were lacking. Inside wasn't much better. Weak traps, few wards, and a lack of patrols gave us free rein of the place. The good news was the mages were practicing their magicks inside so random explosions and shouts didn't raise any alarms until we were right on top of them.

I saw why these guys were kicked out. Kidnapping, live experimentation, and divines know what else. At least I didn't feel bad about putting arrows through their throats.

Their leader, who called herself "The Caller", was a real piece of work. Too bad she was too used to bossing around lesser mages who didn't know a simple ward spell. Two arrows was all it took to get her out of my face and finally claim those books I needed.

This had better be worth it.
