Sonic Chaos Change

"Still at it, Tails?" Sonic the Hedgehog looked over Tails' head at the large silver and red jet in the hangar. "Think we'll need this?"

Tails the Fox stood up and wiped some perspiration from his forehead with one of his two tails, "It was a big help on Earth and there's no telling when Robotnik will make something the Tornado can't handle on its own." He turned from the open panel, pliers still in hand, "Also I'd rather put those two Chaos Emeralds to use instead of just leaving them lying around waiting to be stolen."

"Speaking of Eggman, I'm going to see what he's up to. Catch you later!" Sonic gave a thumbs up and took off, leaving a small gust of wind in his wake.

Tails just smirked as his friend left then picked out a wrench and turned to open the panel to the power distribution system.

A few minutes later, Amy Rose Hedgehog wandered in, her gaze wandering around the interior. She didn't seem to register Tails' presence until she was halfway across the hangar.

"Tails, is Sonic here?" she folded her arms behind her usual red dress.

Tails didn't even look up as he answered, "No."

"Oh well," Amy sighed, "Good luck." She turned and jogged out of the hangar before taking off.

Tails rolled his eyes. Amy had a one-track mind. He was often surprised she even knew his name... or did she just know his nickname? Didn't matter really, she was off to chase Sonic again, at least as long as Robotnik wasn't currently up to something or they didn't know what he was currently up to.

"Does she have any hobbies?" Tails asked aloud, needing to voice his thoughts as he stood up to wipe the grease off his gloves. He couldn't think of one thing Amy ever did that didn't revolve around Sonic. Then again the two of them never interacted when Sonic wasn't around, barring moments like this. Sonic at least would ask what Tails was working on even if he didn't understand the technical details, but he still listened.

Tails closed the panel and put his tools away. Sonic would sometimes gripe about Amy's constant... stalking was probably the most accurate word to describe what she did. Sonic had an ego and loved being a hero but he did confide in Tails that he wasn't interested in fangirls trying to ask him out on dates. Amy stuck around mostly out of sheer determination and because she could run almost as fast as Sonic. She was no slouch, especially once she pulled her hammer out of...somewhere...

Tails thought about that as he retrieved the two chaos emeralds, in a lead lined case to keep them from being easily detected. Where did Amy store her hammer? He had investigated it and his best guess was that Amy was mildly tapped into Chaos Energy. Tails spun his tails and smirked, it was the same reason he was able to fly. His tails were strong but he knew it made no sense for two fluffy fox tails to be able to generate lift or even to spin like they did. While Tails was one of the foremost experts on Chaos Energy, despite his youth, even he knew that sometimes there was no reasoning why it did the things it did.

He sighed as he climbed into the X Tornado's cockpit and took out the Chaos emeralds, the blue and yellow ones. His mind wandered back to Amy. Despite his ego, Sonic was too nice to tell Amy he wasn't interested in a relationship without being rude, he preferred to run from her when he could.

Tails set the case aside then shook his head as he opened the power core in the floor of the cockpit, so he could easily retrieve the emeralds if he had to eject. "Sonic deserves someone better." Both emeralds glowed more brightly before he installed them. Tails stared for a moment before he closed the panel. "Alright, let's try out the new X Tornado." He ran down the pre-flight checklist and buckled himself in before he turned the ignition.

"Chaos energy flowing. Engine primed. Afterburners ready." He heard the engines fire up as he grabbed the controls. "Landing gear stable. Navigation system online." He checked the power meter, "Chaos flow stable. Backup batteries charged and cockpit hatch sealed." He smiled as he looked down his runway as the jet taxied into position, "X Tornado taking off!" He hit the throttle and the X Tornado rocketed down the runway and up into the sky.

Tails loved to fly. With his tails, in the Tornado biplane or in the X Tornado, Tails loved the feeling of defying gravity. He swore he could feel the wind even through the sealed cockpit as the sky and trees raced by as he put the new X Tornado through its paces.

The overload alarm started suddenly, snapping Tails' attention to the instrument panel. "Too much power. I thought I compensated for using two emeralds as a power source! Gotta burn off the extra energy!" He turned on the weapons and fired, but there was no response at first. Then the laser guns exploded.

"Gotta eject!" Tails unbuckled himself and all but ripped open the power panel. He grabbed and pulled on the two brightly glowing emeralds, except they were stuck! He pulled as hard as he could, gritting his teeth until they finally popped free. The energy that bled off the emeralds traveled up his arms as Tails kicked the cockpit release, blowing the canopy open and letting him jump out, tails spinning to pull him away from the deteriorating jet.

Tails was barely out of the cockpit when the X Tornado exploded. Tails shut his eyes against the blast and threw up his arms, still holding the Chaos Emeralds. The force nearly knocked him for a loop but instead of being shredded by heat and debris the emeralds took the full effect on a shield that then enveloped the fox's body.

Tails felt his whole body glow with energy as he struggled to stay airborne, stretching, itching, he felt his chest heave then tighten, then the same to his waist and legs, itching all over and somehow managing to keep his tails spinning. Then it was finished.

Tails opened his eyes in time to see what was left of the X Tornado hit the ground. "I hope no one was down... there..." Tails froze at the sound of his much higher voice then looked down. There were two lumps on his chest and he was wearing an article of clothing he hadn't before. Sensations and questions overwhelmed his mind until he made one decision. "I have to get home!" before he turned and flew home as fast as possible.

Tails stood in his bathroom and stared at himself in the mirror, the yellow and blue chaos emeralds sitting on the sink edge. Tails was taller than before but more evidently his body was female! The wide hips and rather large breasts were obvious but his tails were also longer and bushier and somehow he was wearing clothes. Like Sonic, Tails usually just wore gloves and red shoes, but now he was wearing a red tube top that felt entirely natural and denim shorts that looked like they had been cut down from full pants both leaving his midriff exposed, and lastly his red shoes were now nearly knee-high red boots.

Tails was finally calming down from the shock and adrenaline after the explsion and his legs were starting to feel weak. He fell backwards only to catch himself on his tails. He looked down and lifted his feet off the ground, actually using his bushier tails like a chair.

"I guess if they're strong enough to keep me airborne." He tested their strength and waited for his legs to stop feeling weak before standing up again.

It had to be the Chaos Emeralds, but why? He picked up the gems and stared at them for a moment, as if they would somehow tell him what had happened. He shook his head, "Time to do some research." It was still a bit of a shock to hear his own feminine voice but he still sounded like himself.

Tails' notes on Chaos energy were thorough. When they dealt with them on an almost yearly basis it was only prudent to gather as much information as possible just for situations like this. Knuckles had provided what information he could both from memory and the ruins of his ancestors which left Tails to scour records and what few books on the subject to compile his own notes and even then there wasn't as much as he would have liked.

Tails finally dug up the only notes he had about Chaos Emerald induced transformations, other than "Super Sonic" at least.

"Chaos was originally a chao mutated by exposure to the Master Emerald," Tails leaned back, curling his tails under himself and sitting on them, it was surprisingly comfortable, "According to the legend, it stood to defend the emeralds and the other chao and was changed to fulfill its desire. After the threat was finished it tried to change back but... couldn't..." Tails dropped the notes. "So, I'm stuck like this?"

"Tails, whoa! What happened!" Tails spun around, barely catching him... herself on her tails and supporting herself as she saw Sonic at the doorway.

Tails leaned back and bit and blushed, rubbing the back of her head (had her hair grown longer?). "Oh, uh, hey Sonic. I can explain. Um, the X Tornado exploded and, uuh, the Chaos Emeralds did some stuff and, uhh, long story short I'm stuck like this forever."

Sonic didn't say anything, just staring, mouth agape, at his now very female best friend. The voice sounded close and there weren't any other foxes with two tails but, why was he blushing?

Tails chuckled nervously, "...Why are you looking at me like that?"

"Well my best friend is a girl now and... why are you taller?" Sonic was trying not to ask the obvious questions as he diverted his gaze elsewhere.

Tails looked down at herself, "I think because girls hit puberty earlier than boys so at the same age I'm more physically mature."

"Yeah..." Sonic forced himself to look right at Tails again, "So how do you feel?"

"A little scared but mostly tired." Tails got up off her tails and onto her feet, "Physically I feel fine. I thought I'd have trouble balancing but this feels oddly natural. Better than being shredded by an explosion."

"Oh right," Sonic zoomed up to Tails which made her stumble backwards in shock and catch herself on her tails again, "Are you hurt?"

Tails, "No, the Chaos emeralds protected me, and that did this."

"Right," Sonic looked behind to where Tails was still just supporting herself on her tails, "How are you doing that?"

"This." Tails stood up again and swished her tails, "Well my tails are strong enough to let me fly." She smiled then spun her tails and hovered up off the ground, "No surprise I can hold myself up on them. Now they're big and bushy enough to be a comfortable seat." She set herself down.

"Yeah and... where did you get those clothes?" Sonic looked her up and down. "Chaos emeralds too?"

"Yeah. Which reminds me," Tails walked over to her workbench where she had left the two Chaos Emeralds, "Better lock these up before anyone comes for them."

Sonic couldn't help but stare at Tails as she opened the hidden safe and crouched down to store the emeralds away. He found his gaze wandering her to butt and then up to her chest when she stood up then turned around then looked away. Tails noticed but didn't say anything, only blushing. "So... not much else to do but eat and go to bed."

"You're awfully calm about this," Sonic said as they made their way to the kitchen. "I mean I think I'm more freaked out than you are about the whole gender-switch thing."

Tails nodded, "Kind of, I mean I know I can't change back so I'm not worried about trying to find a solution. I might freak out later but for now I'm just happy to be in one piece and that I didn't end up like Chaos."

"Chaos?" Sonic raised an eyebrow.

"Oh yeah, that's how I know this is permanent." Tails stepped into the kitchen ahead of Sonic, "Chaos was a chao that was mutated by the master emerald when it wanted to protect it and the other Chao from some evil force, and even though it wanted to change back it couldn't, so... same basic principle just thankfully less..."

"Monstrously destructive."

"Exactly."

After about five minutes of eating in silence, Sonic was the first to speak. "So, what do you plan to do now, Tails?"

Tails swallowed, "Well, since there's no point in trying to reverse this, I need to get to work on a new X Tornado. Two emeralds are too much so I'll go back to the one emerald design and add extra power cells for when we lose them again."

"Really?" Sonic sounded surprised, "I mean after this do you really want to try that again?"

Tails nodded, "We're going to need it someday and I'd rather have the option than not. But not right away, I need a day or two to...adjust..."

"Right. So did Amy drop by when I was busy?" Sonic changed the subject.

"Yeah...oh great..." Tails hung her head.

"What?"

"I just realized, I'm going to have to tell everyone about this." Tails' voice carried a hint of dread. "And if Amy stops by tomorrow..."

"When she visits tomorrow, I'll be there to support you," Sonic said.

Tails looked up, "Really?" she asked.

"Of course, can't leave you hanging after all of this," he reached out for a fist bump, that Tails gratefully returned.

"Thanks, Sonic. I owe you one."

"No problem. But for now, time to crash," Sonic finished, stood up and stretched before heading off to bed.

Sleep didn't come easily to Tails. She was actually more shaken up about the X Tornado exploding with her so close than the transformation that came with it. She tossed and turned which only made her new shape more evident, the weight of her new breasts shifting noticeably whenever she rolled over. The thoughts running through her mind didn't help as she stopped on her back and stared up through the darkness at the ceiling.

Was she still changing? Aside from the physical change did she still think the same way? She felt mostly the same, still going over how she had miscalculated the power of the emeralds and how if not for the emeralds then she might by lying on the ground: bleeding, burned and hoping Sonic would find her before she bled out.

Sonic... Thinking about her oldest friend now made Tails blush but she pushed those thoughts aside to wonder about how she was going to tell everyone about her change. Eventually she drifted off to sleep, too tired to think about it anymore.

Tails was up early the next day and showered long before Sonic would wake up. Once her fur was dry and her now longer hair brushed away from her face she took a look at herself in the mirror again. Did she look odd without clothes on? Somewhere in the back of her mind she thought she'd be self-conscious without any clothes, every girl she knew wore clothes all the time, but she felt as comfortable naked as she ever did.

She pulled her tube top on, feeling it tight but comfortable around her breasts, and looked again then took it off and pulled on her shorts and finally pulled her tube top back on. It didn't look right to just wear one or the other but she could honestly go with or without if the mood suited her.

"Better modify the tornado to fit me." She pulled on her gloves and boots then headed for the hangar. She stopped at her work bench, thought for a moment, then pulled her new clothes off and hung them on empty tool hook. No sense getting them dirty while she worked on the Tornado.

Sonic found Tails working on the old biplane's pilot's seat. He smiled as he walked over. "Hey, how's it going?"

"Not bad, just need to adjust the seat and controls a bit." Tails leaned over the side, "It was a bit cramped in here when I got in." He saw Sonic blush, "Sonic? What's wrong."

"Well... you're not wearing anything..." Sonic averted his gaze.

Tails looked down at herself, "Yeah, so? They're not exactly mechanic's scrubs." She climbed out the cockpit edge, "Besides I need to do maintenance checks on the Tornado before take out for a flight."

Sonic couldn't help but smile as he watched Tails climb out of the cockpit but couldn't help staring at her chest for a moment as she retrieved her tools. Tails saw his smile and couldn't help but blush. "What?"

"I was just kinda worried you'd be different after... this." Sonic coughed, "I thought it might have been a dream until I saw you."

Tails paused, "How would I be different?"

Sonic coughed and looked away, "Well... you know...that you'd start acting... different..."

There was a brief uncomfortable pause, then Tails chuckled, "Honestly I was worried too, that my body changing might change how I think. But I'm still me, Sonic."

Sonic watched as Tails opened the Tornado's engine hatch and started working on it. "Yeah. You're still the same Tails. Is something wrong with the Tornado?"

"No just..." Tails paused, "I'm still a bit rattled after the X Tornado exploded. I don't know what I did wrong and I don't want to risk it happening again." She felt a hand on her shoulder and looked up at Sonic.

"Don't worry about it, buddy. I know you'll get it right."

Tails blushed, "Thanks, Sonic," she turned back to checking the engine. Sonic stepped back to give her room and watch her work.

After about ten minutes of tweaking and tuning up, Tails shut the hatch. "That's about as good as it's going to get." She returned her tools to the bench then pulled her clothes on.

Sonic found himself staring as Tails pulled her tails through the hole in the back of her shorts then adjusted her top around her breasts. He coughed slightly, "What are you going to do now?"

"Go for a flight." Tails didn't break her pace as she walked back to the Tornado, "Need to clear my head before I try to start on the X Tornado 3." She climbed into the cockpit and buckled in. "Need to get a feel for the controls now, probably have to adjust the seat more. Took me a week to get it comfortable after the first time I flew it."

"I remember that's how we met," Sonic looked the biplane over, "I found you tinkering with it and painting it blue."

Tails smiled, "Yeah, I got so wrapped up in fixing this plane, but I don't regret it." She started up the engine.

Sonic shouted to be heard over the engine, "I don't regret it either!" He watched as The Tornado took off, still smiling. "You've barely changed since that day, Tails."

The wind through her fur calmed Tails down considerably; she was in her element once again and the much slower and more reliable old biplane was a familiar feeling she needed right now. But she was correct, the seat wasn't quite right with her new height and she kept making adjustments to get it to just the right spot, which she would probably be doing for days.

As she flew in a slow circle her thoughts turned to a question that had been at the back of her mind ever since she first saw her new body in the mirror yesterday: Why did the Chaos Emeralds overload and why did they change her gender? Chaos' transformation from a chao was the only clue that she had found. She stopped adjusting her seat as she thought about why Chaos had mutated: it wanted to protect its kind and the emeralds, so it responded to the chao's wishes.

Tails went over everything that had happened before the explosion. Sonic left, Amy dropped by for a moment before the takeoff. When he (at the time) went to install the emeralds he had said something... what was it?

"Sonic deserves someone better." Tails' face turned bright red as the realization hit her. The emeralds had glowed after the words were spoken before they were installed and that was the source of the overload. They had changed him into a her for... Sonic?

Tails took a deep breath and just let the wind blow through her fur and hair for a moment. How did she feel about Sonic now? The same as she had before, her first and best friend, had looked up to him as a child but now felt they were on equal footing as Tails' own confidence grew and finding a role in helping save the world. Until yesterday she hadn't felt anything other than a strong friendship with him but now... Tails wasn't ignorant, she knew why. Her head was as clear as it was going to get so she turned back to land the plane.

Sonic stood at the hangar door and watched Tails fly, feeling a sense of relief after their conversation earlier.

"Sonic!"

The sense of relief was shattered as Sonic turned to see Amy running over to meet him, "I'm so happy to see you! What's going on?"

Sonic pointed up at the sky, "Tails is just taking a flight."

Amy shielded her eyes from the sun, "Testing the new X Tornado?"

"No. It... blew up," Sonic said.

Amy gasped, "Oh my! Is he alright?"

Sonic suddenly felt awkward about how to respond, but he wasn't about to lie, "Yeah, she's fine just a bit rattled. Needed to clear her head."

"Huh?" Amy gave Sonic a confused look, "her?"

Sonic was spared having to explain things by the sound of the Tornado coming in for a landing. He braced himself for the shock he knew was coming once the biplane stopped and Tails climbed out.

Amy stared as Tails climbed out of her plane, "Tails? What happened to you?"

Tails turned to see Amy right up in her face. Tails gulped but managed to be more concise, "The Chaos Emeralds turned me into a girl after they overloaded the X Tornado yesterday."

"Oh wow," Amy looked her up and down, "So how long are you going to be like this?"

"Forever."

"Forever?" Amy looked Tails in the eye, who just nodded.

Amy grabbed Tails' hands, "Well then why don't we go and introduce everyone to the new Tails!" Tails was startled but wasn't able to get a word in as Amy continued, "and we can go shopping too, get you some new clothes and-"

"Amy, stop!" Sonic sounded unusually harsh as he carefully pulled Amy away from Tails. "Tails has barely had a day to adjust and she's still shaken up from the explosion."

"Sorry Tails," Amy looked down.

"It's fine. I just want some time to adjust before I go showing everything off," Tails rubbed her hands. "Why don't you go tell everyone. I can't hide this and I don't want to keep repeating myself every time someone sees me."

Amy brightened up, "OK, so what do I tell everyone?"

"Just that I had an accident and that the Chaos Emeralds changed me into a girl when they protected me from the X Tornado exploding."

"You got it!" Amy took off leaving the two friends to watch her go.

Sonic smirked and folded his arms, "Well that takes care of her and of us needing to tell everyone. Good job." He gave Tails a thumbs up.

Tails blushed and rubbed the back of her head, "Thanks, Sonic. I really don't want to be dragged all over town, or go clothes shopping, or anything else really. I think this outfit's all I need; I mean if I want to keep wearing it." She looked up at Sonic, "So... why don't you want to date Amy?"

Sonic stared at Tails for a moment, "Well it's not that I don't it's just..." He sighed. He normally didn't want to think about stuff like this, much less talk about it, but with Tails he felt he could open up. "With her and the other 'fangirls' they just want to be with 'Sonic the Hero' not the real me. Don't get me wrong, I love being a hero and the attention but they don't really know me for who I really am. Amy's just the most persistent and strongest of them but she's still just fawning over me and following me around most of the time. She's cute and all and I guess I'd call her a friend but she's just not that close to me, I couldn't talk to her about like that I do with you."

"Do you think I'm cute?"

Sonic was taken aback by Tails' question and he blushed as he stared at her. "What?"

"Sonic, do you think I'm cute?" Tails sat back on her tails, kicking her legs with her arms propping her up.

Sonic looked Tails up and down, really taking in how his oldest friend looked and how she was looking back at him. Sonic met her gaze, he had to say something and with how she was looking at him he said the only thing he could say, "Yes. I do."

"Really?" Tails' eyes lit up.

"Yeah, you're cute. Maybe not 'pretty' I mean but," Sonic jogged in place slightly, fighting an urge to run away, "I don't know how to say it really..."

"Attractive?" Tails offered.

"Yeah, attractive." Sonic took a deep breath, "I mean you don't look that different, I mean you have wide hips and breasts but you still look like you, I mean it's not just that so..." Sonic trailed off.

"I get it," Tails held up her hands with her index fingers extended, "I mean you look the same to me and I knew girls were cute even if I wasn't interested but when I was changed," he crossed his arms still upheld, "I think my interests swapped with my gender so I'm still interested in the opposite sex. If I was still a boy I'd be your best friend but now..." she lowered her hands.

Sonic gulped and stepped forwards, taking Tails' hands, "Tails. I don't think I could talk to anyone else about this kind of stuff, or really open up like this. We've been friends for years and you know me better than anyone else. I kind of want to run but I won't do that because I'll never abandon you, no matter who or what you are."

"Sonic..." Tails' face went red.

They both leaned forwards and kissed.

Both pulled back after a moment and Sonic let go of Tails' hands. "I know this is rich coming from me, but aren't we going a little fast here?"

"Not really," Tails stood up so she and Sonic were eye-to-eye, "Like you said, we've been friends for years, we know each other and we're close enough we just weren't interested in other boys. Now that I'm a girl, there's so much we've gone through and done already that we can still be ourselves."

"I get it," Sonic reach out to touch Tails' shoulders, "Tails... I..." he gulped.

Tails edged closer and wrapped her arms around Sonic, her tails reaching forwards, "Sonic..." They kissed again as they pulled each other close. Sonic was startled when Tails leaned forwards only to feel himself supported by her tails as they propped themselves behind him.

Sonic pulled back and smiled, "Are you dipping me?"

Tails was still blushing as she chuckled, "I'm just excited I mean... does this make me your girlfriend?"

"It does, Tails, and I'm your boyfriend."

"Oh wow," Tails' face turned bright red as she stood up and pulled Sonic to his feet, "So how are you going to break it to Amy?"

"One thing at a time, Tails." Sonic gave her a kiss on the cheek.

Tails kissed him back, "Right. I should get started on the X Tornado 3... oh yeah..." She stepped back from Sonic.

"What? Something wrong, Tails?" Sonic saw she was trying to avert her gaze.

"I think I accidentally wished for this," Tails admitted. "When I was installing the Chaos Emeralds I said I thought you deserved someone better than Amy and I think the emeralds 'heard' me and made this happen."

"Really?" Sonic stepped forwards and looked her in the eyes, "I think that's sweet. Maybe it was an accident but it doesn't change how I feel now." He gave her a short kiss, "don't worry about it. You wanted to make me happy and you have, and yourself too. Now I'm going to get some lunch. Good luck."

Tails stood there, stunned and smiling as she watched Sonic leave. She grinned and made a giddy noise as she clenched her hands by her face and spun her tails, briefly lifting her off the ground as the worry dropped away. "Alright then," she landed and clapped her hands together and headed for her work bench, "Let's get started on those new blueprints. I think we should try to retrieve what's left of the last one to use as a frame, or at least salvage whatever parts weren't completely fried by the Chaos Emeralds." Tails' worries were forgotten as she delved back into her favorite pastime.

The rest of the day passed uneventfully, Tails barely left her work station all day, only taking a break when Sonic brought her lunch and supper when she took a break to sit back on her tails and have a short chat with him before she went back to work on the new design for the X Tornado. It wasn't until sunset when she stretched and decided it was time for bed.

Sleep eluded the vixen's mind as she rolled over. It wasn't just that she was still adjusting to her new body but the day's events were weighing even more on her mind. Amy had definitely told everyone who knew them and Tails hoped everyone wouldn't storm their house at once to see the new her, or at least if they did it would get everything over with quickly. Tails wasn't dreading going out but she'd be lying if she said she wasn't nervous. Then there was Sonic...

She smiled at the thought that they were now a couple. Even if they had only declared it earlier that day, now it felt like it had been going on for years. She shivered slightly even though it wasn't that cold. Was this another part of female anatomy she had to deal with or just a result of nerves and excitement?

A creaking sound made Tails roll over to face her now open door, "Sonic?"

"Hey Tails." Sonic stood at the edge of her bed, "Can I join you?"

Tails blushed, "Please." She slid back to give Sonic enough room to lie down under her covers. "Something wrong?"

"No, I just... like you said earlier we've been together for years, even if this is still new." They lay facing each other with their noses close to touching.

"So... you want to sleep together," Tails reached forwards, as did Sonic.

"Just cuddle and be with you," Sonic pulled her close, "Nothing more yet."

Tails smiled, "I'd like that." Then snuggled up close to each other and just lay there, feeling each other's heartbeats.

"Sonic."

"Tails."

"I..." Tails gulped. She had said they weren't really rushing things but... Sonic had already taken a risk here so she decided to go all in. "I love you, Sonic."

"I love you too Tails." Both felt their hearts racing in excitement and relief as they kissed. Tails wrapped her tails around Sonic and held him close as they fell asleep together.
