The Lords of Elemestara

Prologue

Long ago, there existed a beautiful and mighty city known as Elemestara, the City of Six Towers. Within its vast boundaries lived a happy, peaceful people who lived free of hate, pain, loss, and sorrow. This was largely due to the great City Lords and their powerful elemental magics, combining to create a true Utopia where no one race or species was considered superior, or frowned on for being different. Each quarter of the city supported one of the fantastic tower homes of the City Lords, each of these four towers was unique, and yet all were the same. The citizens of the city understood well how each of the elements balanced against the others, and the city's layout reflected that careful balance.

The Tower of Mists in the Water Quarter was home to the Water Lord, Aquatos, an otteress of unsurpassed beauty and grace. Her place of power was the southwestern quarter of Elemestara, where her water magic brought healing, wisdom, and new life. The city's docks and much of the trading were also under her jurisdiction. Though she cared little for acts of commerce herself, she did make an effort for the good of the people and enjoyed getting herself a treat at the market centre now and again. Though she was a powerful mage, she was also skilled in the use of the tonfas as a weapon and focus for her spellcraft.

The Tower of Flames in the Fire Quarter served as the home of Fire Lord Pele, a kitsune with nine burning tails and a passion that burned as brightly as the flames she commanded. The northeastern quarter was her domain, providing much of the power for the rest of the city by way of geothermal energy as well as supplying artisans, craftsmen, and military force when required. Pele was well known for her fast temper, but also for her stunning figure and staying power in certain other activities. Her skills with the twin butterfly swords she favoured were as sharp as her temper.

Earth Lord Terapon, a badger of considerable strength, inhabited the Tower of Marble in the Earth Quarter. Despite his great strength, Terapon was a gentle soul, and far more interested in the farms he oversaw in the southeastern quarter of Elemesatara than in combat. A great deal of research with his earth magic went into making sure those thousands of farms produced bumper harvests on a regular basis. Though he hated the idea of taking a life and just fighting in general, his weapon of choice, a massive war hammer, became almost as a living thing in his massive paws.

In the Wind Quarter stood the Tower of Clouds, home to Wind Lord Avious, the great golden eagle. Much of his work revolved around the study of the stars and skies, thus the greatest of thinkers and philosophers made their home in the northwestern quarter of the city with him. Like Lord Terapon, he abhorred violence of any kind, but his skill with the battle staff was unmatched by any.

At the centre of the city, a pair of twin Towers stood but a few hundred paces from each other. These two Towers were alike in every way, yet they could not have been more different from each other, for within their walls lived the two most powerful mages in the entire City of Six Towers. The Ivory Tower was home to Lord Radient, the white Dragon of Infinity, and the Onyx Tower to his twin sister Lord Nephry, the black Dragon of Silence. The twins each wielded enormous magical and political power, but there existed between them a greater balance than even that which supported the city. Radient commanded positive forces, the healing of life bringing Water, the healthy growth of Earth, the warming touch of the Fire, and the calming wisdom and enlightenment of the gentle Wind.

Nephry though, she called on the darker negative forces, the violent storms of angry Water that sank ships and coastline, the destruction of restless, shifting Earth that toppled mountains and levelled city and village, the all consuming hunger of the wild Fire that left nothing but ash and death in its wake, and the chill embrace of the howling gale Wind that whipped tornado and hurricane into frenzy.

Though the twins had the odd disagreement, they were largely peaceful as neither could gain an advantage in power over the other, either magically or politically. This stalemate continued for years, and though Elemestara prospered because of it, this did not sit very well with Nephry, she was tired with the stalemate between herself and her brother, and hungered to upset the delicate balance between them so she could take total control of the great city as the undisputed Queen of Elemestara. Over the next several years, Nephry used her dark magic to find people in each quarter of Elemestara to aid her and become her Dark Lords. As with all cities, Elemestara had its share of citizens who operated outside the normal laws, and it was from this criminal underworld that Nephry began her recruitment.

From the Wind Quarter, Nephry approached a young and impressionable bat named Naku, a petty sneak thief just starting out, and offered her a quick path to greater power than anything she'd ever get in her chosen field. Now, as Dark Wind Lord Nakumati, she terrorized the little flown airways of the Wind quarter, her thirst for the virgin blood that powered most of her black Wind magic driving her to kidnap innocent cubs to feed from.

The Earth Quarter was where Nephry found Herros, a wolverine and capable murderer favouring the axe. The lure of fast money and a multitude of easy victims brought her swiftly into Nephry's services. As Dark Earth Lord Herroseva, she regularly left farms that refused to pay her tribute as smashed husks with grisly object lessons staked outside. The decaying bodies of her victims empowering her dark Earth magic.

The tiger shark known as Ripper had stalked the sewers and canals of the Water Quarter for years before Nephry found him, the offering of his favourite meal on a regular basis quickly winning him to her side. As Dark Water Lord Ripkan, the infamous rapist continued his campaign of terror and death, with his black arts powered by sex magic, and his insatiable appetite for still living flesh, there was rarely much left of his victims after he finished with them.

It was in the Fire Quarter though that Nephry found her greatest and most powerful recruit. A black phoenix named Altar, a mercenary by trade but with a nasty habit of switching sides in the middle of a battle if the enemy offered him a better price. He found Nephry's offer to be very attractive indeed, Fire Lord Pele as his personal slave and sex toy. Dark Fire Lord Altarmaru quickly grew to be a force to be reckoned with, his chaotic Fire magic, fuelled by pain and torture, served Nephry's ultimate goal well.

And so began the Great War, the streets of Elemestara becoming battlegrounds drenched in blood. Radient longed for his sister to return to the ways of balance that had sustained the great city for so long, but realized that for that to happen she first had to be defeated and all her Dark Lords captured. And so he lead the other City Lords into battle, but the damage had already been done and the delicate balance of Elemestara was corrupted. The war stretched longer and longer as the years passed, with no end in sight. A state that has persisted to this day...
