#1 of Zack Leander, P.I.

This was for a writing challenge in a Telegram group I joined (link here if you're interested: https://t.me/joinchat/TXMB1RU1ETeKOakg). At just over a thousand words, we would write a short story fitting a chosen theme. The new theme for this week is, "A closed mind is not open to new ideas."

Zachariah 'Zack' Leader, private eye based in Crossroads City, Utah returns once again! This time, we get a prequel story set several years before the present, and we finally learn how he met his straight, older best friend and Saint Bernard roommate, Daniel. Is this how you expect a solid friendship to start?

Me and Daniel went way back.

I'd been half a year shy of graduating from the University of Utah in Crossroads City, dreading the day I earned my diploma and my P.I. license only to move back in with my parents. I could already envision my dad giving awkward, cordial nods before and after work. Meanwhile, my mom would try to passive-aggressively drag me to church on weekends, then do everything she could to 'set me up' with a 'nice girl' like some delusional matchmaker. With months on its way, I could already envision the spats and stressful, tense mealtimes to come. Did I also mention they would never stop comparing my successes to my older sisters', one of whom was a dutiful housewife?

Unfortunately, a part-time retail job only earned enough for a security deposit. Until then, I distracted myself with schoolwork and trying to date. When the latter didn't succeed most of the time (and after my last boyfriend dropped out to find himself and get lost in his work of...ugh, paranormal investigations), I tried to form a relationship of all things on Howlr. Of course, I eagerly blocked the dick pic-sending perverts and chatted with some decent furs, but one fully struck a chord with me: Daniel Caruso, an older Saint Bernard in his early thirties, who wanted as much as me to get to know a potential sexual partner before any intimacy.

Daniel Caruso claimed to be bi-curious. He owned and operated a struggling café called 'Danny's Boulevard of Books & Coffee', lived in the apartment above it, liked cheesy action movies, and also claimed to be bi-curious. The primary reason? His emotionally turbulent, gold-digging ex-wife had left him with divorce papers. She hated the life they forged together and notably hated how he liked his job occupation as a middle-class café owner. The whole affair left Daniel heartbroken, forcing him to pay hefty alimony checks so she could live a fabulous, carefree life as a bachelorette in Oasis the next state over. He essentially paid for her semi-wealthy lifestyle, which hemorrhaged his savings and business (not to the point of losing the business though, yet). It caused Daniel to fall in a downward spiral of depression, doubt and inevitably questioning his sexuality after reflecting on past failed relationships with women.

Daniel: I dunno. Never had a problem with gay people or anything. I just never questioned or asked myself if I even liked dudes. I mean I'm okay with musicals and recognize that a guy is beefcake or is hot, but does that make me gay?

** Daniel: ...**

** Daniel: I'm sorry if I sound fucking pathetic...**

** Me: Haha. It's not pathetic to ask yourself. Did you know it took some time for me to accept myself as demisexual?**

** Daniel: Demisexual? What's that?**

** Me: I only like a person after I make a meaningful emotional connection with them. It's a part of the spectrum of asexuality where a person isn't sexually attracted to one gender or both.**

** Daniel: Do you think I'm that then?**

** Me: Perhaps, but it will take some time to figure out if you're a demi bisexual.**

** Me: By the way, I have class coming up in five minutes, Danny. It might take a while before I can talk to you again.**

** Daniel: That's okay!**

** Daniel: Please, call me 'Daniel'. I prefer it over 'Danny'.**

** Me: Why's that? People are usually quite fond of their nicknames.**

** Daniel: Heh. You're so articulate for a college student.**

** Daniel: Laura liked to call me 'Danny' a lot.**

** Daniel: Condescendingly, and I hated it.**

** Me: Thank you.**

** Me: Sorry she did that to you. Did you ever consider changing your café's name b/c of it?**

** Daniel: HAHAHA**

** Daniel: I'd love to but the paperwork would be a nightmare**

** Daniel: Besides I'm fine with the name.**

** Daniel: Anyway, you have a good class, kiddo! Talk to you later?**

** Me: Absolutely, Daniel.**

Despite his moments of rambling, we easily connected over the course of a month. I enjoyed his corny, immature jokes, his tastes in music and film, not to mention he was incredibly patient when I got too busy to immediately message him back. The Bernard also found my dream as a private investigator very fascinating, asking me time and time again about the strange cases I encountered in my internships. By the time he started asking me what I looked like without pants on, there was enough of a bridge between us for me to send him a lewd selfie. Not since Andy Hatathli had I felt that emboldened to send faceless nude pics.

Eventually, he invited me to his place after closing the café on a Sunday evening. I didn't know what we would be doing that night, but because my classes weren't until Monday afternoon, my instincts to bring a condom and bottle of lube ended up turning true.

Minutes after he led me upstairs to his apartment, we stared at each other across the bed for a moment, taking the other's appearance in. I dressed myself in casual shorts and a university t-shirt one size too big for me. The older canine wore a red plaid shirt and blue jeans to battle the cool autumn weather.

"So...you nervous?" I asked.

"Heh...of course, I am." He sighed, "

We took our time at first. I said beside him on the bed and we slowly started to explore our boundaries. When I asked, Daniel gave me permission to caress my paw all over his chest. I gave a few scratches here and there on his burly stomach too. Pinching one of his nipples on the outside of his shirt also elicited a moan from him. The touch-neglected canine turned out to be ticklish but panted in whining approval when my fingers lowered down to his bulge.

He didn't object when I cautiously got down to my knees and unzipped his fly. He didn't object when I used both of my paws to pull down the denim jeans to reveal his tented boxers. He didn't object when I peeled it the underwear down to reveal a thick and uncut dog cock half-erect and leaking nervously with precum. The emerging red shaft and its veins mesmerized me in a trance. This would've been the first time I ever had sex with a canine. An older Saint Bernard, no less. The masculine musk emanating from his crotch was ripe from the day's unwashed work. It drove me wild with growing lust.

Daniel moaned loudly once I licked my feline cock along his length. According to Andy, back when we were together and intimate, the rough calico tongue I possessed did wonders when I blew him. The Saint Bernard in my maw was no exception, initially hanging his head back and panting rapidly as a barbed up-and-down on his sensitive member, my lips and tongue surrounding his length as I fondled his hanging orbs underneath with my fingers. The furry pouch holding them was soft as carpeting and felt so good to handle, particularly when it resulted in whines coming from the appreciative canine.

After a short while, the hardened cock between my lips started to go limp. At first, I believed Daniel was a little nervous, so I increased my tongue treatment and groping his ball sack as my tail wagged against the wooden floor.

Then, he spoke up, "Ah...uh...W-Wait, stop, Zack."

I did, pulling my maw away and wiping my lower jaw.

"You okay, Daniel?" I asked, concern in my eyes as I glanced up at him. "Am I doi--"

"No, you're...you're doing fine, but..." the Saint Bernard before me pinched the bridge of his nose and exhaled sharply through his snout, "I don't think this is working for me..."

"Not working for you?" He nodded, and I lowered my ears. "So, I take it you're not gay then? Or the very least bi?" He shook his muzzle sheepishly, to which I stood back up. "I'm sorry about this, Daniel."

His chuckling shattered the awkward silence built between us.

"What the fuck are you sorry for, kid? You didn't do anything. So what if I know for sure I'm straight now?"

"Well, it makes things a bit awkward from now on," I pointed out, and the Saint Bernard boisterously laughed. "What? What's so funny?"

He calmed himself down enough to pull his underwear back up and tuck his limp yet thick dick away.

"Just because I'm straight and you're a gay demisexual doesn't mean I don't wanna still hang out with you, dude," Daniel explained to me. "The evening's still young. You don't have to go back to the dorms right now, if you don't want to. I got a copy of Jacob Candle and Robocopper. We don't have to do anything, really."

"You're a little lonely, aren't you?" I couldn't help but smirk. "What the hell? I'm lonely too!"

Safe to say, the next three hours flew by for us. It seemed like the awkward, lustful uncertainty between us dissipated into something else: camaraderie. After finding out I only had a light dinner and still felt hungry, Daniel went out of his way to order a pizza to share as we sat on his couch to watch some action flicks on his TV. The entire time, even after the pizza arrived, we laughed at dumb action scenes, discussed what else had been going on in our lives the previous week, our hopes for the future, etc. Daniel even acted like me giving him a blowjob was no big deal, that it only cemented his sexuality.

In a sense the night did completely cement our friendship.

"So, you still looking for a place to stay, Zack?" Daniel asked mid-way through our second movie.

"Yeah, but you know how it is. I got enough for a security deposit, but it'll take a miracle for either of my parents to co-sign the lease, let alone cut me slack if I move back in..."

"You ever consider a roommate?" he proposed, then added it with, "Before Laura and I were on the rocks, we considered having a pup in the extra bedroom up here. It never happened, but it's just an extra bedroom."

I jerked my head to him with widened, hopeful eyes. "Are you serious?"

"Yep!" He barked happily and scooted closer to me on the couch. "Why not? You can even start a private eye agency of yours here! I got this big, big storage closet next to the base of the stairs. It's an extra room me and my coworkers hardly ever use anyway."

"If you weren't straight, I'd kiss you right now," I commented.

"Okay then, that's getting a little gay!" he casually pushed my muzzle away and laughed with me. "I'm serious though; let's be roommates! What do ya say, Zachariah Leander?"

The grin on my muzzle was too painful to keep up, but I didn't care. "I say you got a deal, Daniel Caruso." My tail wagged eagerly as I shook his larger paw, nodding back in approval. "You got a deal!"

Months later and our venture as roommates finally began. I also ended up getting one of my first private investigation cases not long after I set up the right equipment for Leander Investigations, LLC. It involved doing research and reconnaissance on the activities of one Laura Caruso (nee Howards) in Oasis. My detective work eventually revealed that the female dog had been lying to her former husband in Crossroads City that she lived on her own. Instead of being honest to their lawyers, she'd been secretly cohabitating with a well-off boyfriend in a penthouse apartment, yet still eagerly raked in all the alimony checks sent her way. In fact, the previous month's payment helped Laura pay for a remodeled living room she posted pictures of to MuzzleScroll and other social media platforms. Almost all of them had a snapshot of the boyfriend in the background.

Safe to say, Daniel never paid a single dime to his ex-wife ever again.

He also never stopped thanking me for it.
