Prompt 1000 words or more on a cute-mee

"Hey, Jaime, wanna come with us? Clearly he's a no-show, so come tubing down the river with us. The water is still cool but it's not cold...," Brenda let the sentence trail off as Jaime's shoulders sank.

"Nah, I'll just stay here and chill for a bit. It's air conditioned here, and my room bakes in the sunlight all afternoon. It's tempting but tubing just sounds like being too hot with a bad sunburn on only one side. I'll s-stay here where it's cool and dark."

"Fine. But if you want to, meet here with us later. We'll be back here for pie after dinner is over. I'll buy you a slice."

"Shu- shu- O.K., but I'll just chill out here for now. Later!"

Jaime

"Did I hear you say you're not into swimming today? You're Jaime, right? Hello, I'm Alex."

Jaime looked up to see a very well dressed guy about his own age standing at his table. He was not very tall, but very well dressed, and despite the horrible humidity outside his clothes were still very crisp.

N. No. I mean- yes I'm Jaime, yeah into swimming, just; no - n-not feeling it right now. I'm waiting for someone who's about an hour late to sh-sh, to be here.

Hour late to show? Damn that's brutal. Hahahah. But funny, hey? Like what are the odds?

Ummm? Eh?....

I'm here waiting for my blind date to show, and they are about an hour late to show up. My friend Liess said she was sending over a g'... someone for me to meet. They were supposed to be here like an hour ago. But I gave up on them long ago. Nothing on my phone, so I'm guessing "ghosted for sure." Or else car trouble with a scoop of phone out of signal on the side.

I can relate. Sammy said that he was bringing someone for me to meet, but he's a no show also. And Sam's not answering his texts.

So, Jaime, what's your favorite hobby? Anything fun?

Astronomy, and I think it is a lot of fun. Mmm-my friends don't agree with that, but I think they're wrong.

"Astronomy? That might be a Lot of fun." Alex leaned in with a wry smile, "Now, Solar, or extra-solar?"

"Oh, I have to pick just one? Well that's easy, just the Solar system; its planets and moons. Nothing beyond the original nine interests me much." Alex tilted his head and raised his eyebrows. "What? There're not enough we don't know about here, already? You want more unanswered questions?"

"Nothing outside the heliosphere? How come?"

"Well, just studying the moon and it's phases keeps me busy enough, ... what about you?"

Alex smiled, " J'sui Artiste!" This only got him a blank look. "I'm an artist."

"Oh, that's cool. I can't do any art," Jaime said looking down.

Really? Almost everyone can make art, though most people don't stay with it long enough to get better at it.

"I started to draw a comic once -- before I found out how hard it is to draw." Jaime glanced at the floor looking shy and vulnerable.

"Ohhhh...? What was your comic about?"

"It wasn't anything interesting. It didn't go anywhere. I abandoned it after I wrote myself into a corner."

"So! Tell me, what was it about

A little pink crept into Jaime's cheeks, "Well, uh, I, it, uhh, w-was going to be something about some werewolves."

"Mmmmm? Tell me more."

He blushed redder. "It's nothing, it didn't go anywhere. I didn't make the comic."

Straightening up, Alex crossed his arms and said, "Tell me what it was about."

Jaime shrank down a little in his seat, he was now one whole head lower than Alex. Hands folded in his lap, he mumbled something like, "It was about a friendship between two werewolves."

Alex sat down in the chair opposite Jaime. They looked at each other, Alex staring intently at Jaime's face, and Jaime glancing at Alex to see if he was still being stared at. When finally it was unbearable, "What," he began, "why are you staring at me?"

"Jaime! You were writing a Gaywerewolf comic, weren't you!" Alex said in a low voice. I just put it all together now. Ha! My friend, Liess, just started dating a guy named Samuel. I'm guessing that he might be your friend 'Sammy'. And they decided to set us up to -accidentally- meet." Ha! I hoped you were Gay, but you are so delicious I chanced to talk to you either way since my date didn't show.

Just staring, Jaime opened and shut his mouth several times in frustration. "No, I mean yes, no, I, I,... I mean, 'No,' it was, but I mean -- I'm not gay. And Sammy wouldn't out me wuh-without tell," Jaime faltered to a stop.

Jaime just stared. Alex was smiling at him, but the expression was unreadable. Was that smile predatory, happy, or joyful? Jamie just couldn't tell.
