Introducing Jack and Elisha

Just a short story to introduce two characters I've created. I have a lot of ideas for these two, but I would love any feedback or suggestions on where to go from here. Jack loves his son Elisha, and Elisha loves his dad. This is my first attempt at a short story in a handful of years, so let me know if it's any good! I take criticism well.

Jack was a handsome German Shepherd, young and in shape, almost fully black except for some spots and hints of brown fur here and there. He's twenty eight, about six ft. Three in. Tall, toned and slightly muscular. His muscles were mostly in his arms though, his belly flat but soft. He's a single father of one, the wife having divorced him over learning of his interest in men, but still allows their cub to visit him on the weekends. She wouldn't keep a boy from his father just because the man has a different interest, plus she doesn't think Jack would hurt their son. He's always been a loving and active father, stern when needed but never aggressive in any way. He's more the type to sit his son down and have an open talk about what the boy did wrong when he gets into trouble, rather than yell at him or give a physical punishment. He still gives punishments when needed, but small things like no video games or tv for a few days.

He's generally a very nice man, a gentleman if you will. He loves to strike up friendly conversation with just about anyone, chatty with the grocery store clerk, chatty with the bank teller, chatty at the drive through. He has a warm smile, often greets strangers and waves whenever he's walking about. Jack is a firm believer that if you're nice to people, you'll get the same treatment back, or at least brighten someone's day.

He's always very active with his son, before and after the divorce. He plays catch with the boy, tag, red rover with him and his little friends. Various board games such as candy land, clue, monopoly, and sometimes he would even play video games with his son, even though he wasn't really a huge fan of modern games. He frequently took his boy to the park to play on the playground, keeping an eye on him at all times of course. He also took him to the water park a lot, since both canines loved playing in the water. Camping was also a favorite between the two shepherds, always having loads of fun on their weekend trips. The love between jack and his ex wife was gone, but they were still able to stay friends as well, not a lot of anger or animosity between the two. They had grown apart for a while after their son was born anyway, so the revelation that Jack was more interested in men was just the little push that made them decide to fully split up.

Of course Jacks son was upset by the divorce, but since the parents kept a good relationship, he ended up adjusting to it just fine. He still got a bit sad over it from time to time, after all it was quite a big change, but both parents did their best to keep the boy happy.

The little German shepherd was eight years old now, about four feet tall, happy and excitable but often quiet, named Elisha. (Often called Eli for short). He was shy a lot, nervous and unsure about some things. The little eight year old just tended to over think, entering that awkward phase where he's self conscious about how he acts and what he says, eager to be seen as a grown up pup but lacking the mental capacity to act as such like most kids. He was just developing a little faster than other kids, entering this self conscious phase earlier than most. When he was alone with his dad it was easy to let himself be himself though, since his dad was always so encouraging. Jack made sure his son never felt embarrassed of anything he did or asked around him, wanting his boy to feel safe and comfortable around him. He wanted his kid to be able to be open with him about anything without being scared of judgement or punishment. If the boy was unsure of something and jack didn't want to encourage bad behavior, he would just gently explain why it's not alright instead of scolding the boy. After all, sometimes kids just don't know any better! Something like that had actually happened today.

When Jack went to pick Elisha up from school on Friday, the teacher had requested to have a little talk with Jack about an incident that had happened during recess.

Jack is a little confused, giving his son a slight questioning look to try and guess see what this was about, but Elisha only looks away from his dad, embarrassed and nervous he might be in trouble. The teacher softly asks if Elisha would sit out in the hallway so the adults could talk for a moment, and Elisha exits the room with his head hung, eyes glued to the floor and ears flat.

"Now, Elisha isn't in trouble or anything if the sort, I just wanted to fill you in on some... behavior that I thought you might want to address." The teacher tells him as she shifts to sit down behind her desk, motioning for Jack to take a seat. He pulls a chair up, sitting down in front of her desk with his hands folded over his lap, giving a little nod as he listens.

"Alright, what's he been getting up to? It's not- you know. Nothing... inappropriate, right? I would hate to have that sort of conversation with him already." The Shepard replied with a little chuckle, trying to lighten the mood a little bit. Though he was serious, dreading 'the talk' with his son.

"No no, nothing like that. Well, nothing inappropriate of course, but he does seem to have a particular interest with one of his classmates. Elisha seems to be... expressing his interest in a bit of an aggressive manner though. You know how boys pick on girls when they start having their little crushes?"

"Ah, I think I understand. Has he been bullying one of the girls in his class?"

"Er... no, not one of the girls. It's not entirely just his behavior either, I've already had a chat with the other boys parents. Him and one of the other boys have been fighting, but it's... well it just doesn't seem like they actually hate each other. They even get along sometimes but they both get a bit handset with each other, and then they sort of seem to get frustrated or angry. For example, today they were working on a project together for class, they chose each other to be partners, and were getting along fine at first. They were sharing some markers, sitting next to each other close, arm to arm as they worked on the project. But then they started to fight over the markers, pushing and pulling at each other's fur. The other boy called him some names, so Elisha yanked on his tail, the other boy pushed him and pinned him down before I managed to separate them. But when I did separate them, they seemed more flustered an embarrassed about the fight rather than angry. I think there might be a little crush going on there, which of course is okay, kids will be kids, but both boys need to know they can't be fighting like that."

Jack nodded and listened as she explained, giving a hum in understanding.

"I understand, I remember getting like that myself when I was a cub. I'm sure a little talk with him will clear things up, thank you for taking the time to let me know." Jack said before giving a smile and shaking the teachers hand, wishing her well before exiting the room. He knelt down by Elisha and ruffled his hair some, giving a soft smile.

"It's okay, kiddo, you're not in any trouble, I promise. I just wanna chat about some stuff when we get home, alright? But we can stop for a treat first." Jack offered, pressing a kiss to his forehead.

Elisha's ears perked up some, but he still felt a little guilty and nervous, not understanding the feelings that he's been having lately. He's able to relax since his dad reassured him though, taking the man's hand and walking out of school with him, his little deep blue backpack over his shoulders. The little cub fidgeted some after he got into the car and put his seatbelt on, his legs kicking back and fourth as he sat in the seat, looking at his tennis shoes. Jack pats Elisha's head one more time before he pulls off, heading to the nearest drive through ice cream shop. Elisha's tail thumps against the car seat as they pull up, licking his lips at the thought of ice cream.

"You want a chocolate cone, right kiddo? Is that still your favorite?" Jack asked him, looking over briefly with a smile. Elisha nods eagerly, ears fully up.

"Yeah! Can I have it dipped too?" He asked excitedly, Jack chuckling softly at the eager pup before giving a nod. He orders the ice cream and hands it to Elisha before pulling out again, heading back to his small home.

It was a cozy little condo, two small bedrooms, one small bathroom, and an open kitchen connected to the living room. The pup was eagerly eating his ice cream, only a little bit dripping onto his hands as he got out of the car, heading into the home with his father. Jack opened the door for him before stepping in himself, kicking his shoes off and letting out a relaxed sigh. He moves to sit on the couch, patting the seat next to him.

"C'mere, kiddo, have a seat. Can we talk about your buddy at school? I hear you guys are being mean to each other. I'm not mad, I promise. I just wanna know why you guys are fighting." Jack asked and reassured, putting an arm around his son's shoulders when he sat down by him.

Elisha sunk in on himself just a tad when his dad brought up the incident at school, avoiding eye contact. He finished off his ice cream and licked off his paws before he gave a shy response.

"He was mean first, he took my blue marker!" Elisha told Jack, his cheeks the faintest but flush.

"Yeah but you were pretty mean back, weren't you? You know it hurts a whole lot when you pull on someone's tail, Eli. Do you think maybe there's a reason you two are being mean to each other?" Jack asked softly.

"I don't know... he's just- he makes me so mad."

"But you guys are friends, right? You chose to do a project together."

"Yeah... I mean, we are, I just. I don't know, dad. Sometimes I feel weird around him and I just get mad and we start fighting." Elisha mumbled, face a little redder.

"Well, Eli, I think maybe you have a little crush on that boy. Do you think maybe that's why you feel funny around him sometimes? It's pretty common for little boys and/or little girls to tease or be mean to each other when they start getting these feelings. You're just young, you don't know how to express those emotions right just yet, so this is pretty natural. You boys just need to figure out how to be nicer to each other, okay?"

Elisha is embarrassed, but as his father explains he seems to relax about it. He just doesn't want to admit that he has a little crush, still confused about his feelings. "Okay... I'll try to be nicer."

"That's my boy. Now what do you feel like doing? We got the whole weekend for fun, just you and me!" Jack says and ruffles Elisha's hair a little roughly, making both of them laugh a little bit.

"Daddy, stop it, you're messing up my hair!" Elisha exclaimed as he giggled. The man smiled fondly, but on the inside he always felt a tad flustered when his son called him daddy. Even after a few years, he still wasn't used to hearing a word like that from his little boy. Of course though, like a good father, he always immediately disregarded the feeling. It wasn't that he got EXCITED hearing his son say that... more like, embarrassed, since daddy felt like such a dirty word to him. He couldn't tell his son not to call him that though, he knew the pup wasn't doing anything wrong. The pup proceeded to pick out various movies and shows on tv until he fell asleep on the couch, tucked under his fathers arm. The older Shepard gently picked his son up and carried him off to his bedroom, tucking him in before returning to the living room to watch a little more tv before he goes to sleep.
