A short battle of magic

Hello

A very short story I wrote just to get my creative juices flowing

This may possibly turn into a series

A battle

To the young mage the world seemed to spin around him. His opponents spell had cast him high in the air, and his body was turning end over end as he fell down towards the hard ground.

His spell of feather fall, one he had cast in the beginning of the battle, made the fall stop almost abruptly some few feet off the ground. He mentally dispelled the magical updraft and fell the last length to land on his legs, an offensive spell on his lips.

The enemy, though, had had ample time to ready his next attack, a cone of cold that drew almost all the heat from the unfortunate mage and buffeted him with razor sharp and cold winds.

"So Daniel, do you now see who is the greatest?" Asked his opponent, a white-robed panther, whom he had feuded with for a long time at the academy of high arts they both attended.

"D-damn y-you Ambrey, I h-have not lost yet!" Shouted the young mage, casting a spell both offensive and defensive in nature. The panther was caught off-guard and was hit fully by the sizzling necromantic ray emanating from Daniel's hand. It sucked away a part of his life-force and transferred it to the wounded mage, warming his body and healing the small cuts on his face from the icy winds he had just been hit with.

"You wretched rodent!" Roared the panther, and promptly launched a veritable volley of magical missiles, each one homing in on the mouse.

Reacting quickly, Daniel waved his hands in circular motions in front of him three times, and promptly teleported behind the surprised wizard. The missiles of magic, designed to home in on their target, made a full turn and headed towards him.

Which was just as he had intended; with him standing behind the white-robed wizard the missiles had to go through his enemy to get to him. The panther was a skillful wizard, though, and his protective globe of magic absorbed the missiles that would otherwise have probably killed him or knocked him unconscious, had they hit home.

The now enraged man spun about with another roar on his lips, this time the roar itself was a spell, making the air in front of his screaming mouth distort wildly with magical noise.

That magical blast of the roar was deflected by a wall of wind Daniel managed to put up just in time before being hit.

"Looks like we're back at square one," the young mage taunted, "now it's my turn to fire it up!"

And with those words he launched five burning missiles, magical flames cackling as they flew towards the panther. The first three were absorbed by Ambrey's shield, but it then dissipated in a burst of magical energy having been drained by the volley of missiles, letting the last two flame bolts hit him squarely on his torso. He fell to the ground yelling with pain, his robes burning. He rolled around until the flames were put out, and rose with a growl, his white robe marred by soot stains and two large holes on the front. Before he had completed his ascent, Daniel's arm grabbed him by the throat, and a horrible paralyzing sensation wracked his body, forcing him to stand still.

The young mouse drew a knife and put it point first into the hollow of the defeated panther's throat.

"Do you yield?" asked the mage.

And that's that, this is totally stand-alone with no connection to anything, but I may turn it into a series of some sorts...
