Dream I had last night

A sweep of frigid fall air bit Derrick's nose as he made his way out to his car from his townhouse apartment. Tulsa has been known for it's unreasonably cold seasons so it was something the llama was used to. He tucked his hooves under his arms to heat them. His thick fur didn't like to transfer heat so it helped little though it kept the soft wind from nibbling at his fingertips.

The car was covered in a thin sheet of frost that sparkled against the vehicle's black mica finish. Derrick pulled the handle harshly expecting it to be frozen though it wasn't. There was a metallic knock as the door failed to open due to it being locked.

Derrick cursed to himself for putting his keyless entry remote in his pocket before he left. He never remembers that he is walking 15 feet, then using that key. He wrestled his pocket to fit his large hands in his cold jeans. He pressed the button incessantly until the compact car beeped lightly as if to say, "Enough, it's unlocked!"

Plopping into the seat, Derrick carelessly tossed his laptop bag into the passenger's seat. He inserted the key with a series of staccato clicks as the slot accommodated the key's shape. Derrick pushed the rubber top of the key with his hoofed thumb and pushed it over. The Corolla's 1.8liter engine sounded a barrage of soft chirps, then the cylinders kicked as they revved into a quiet and warm hum. The heater whirred on and blew cold air into Derrick's face then slowly transformed into a soothing heated flow of comfort.

Like he had over a hundred times before, he mindlessly placed the transmission in reverse and released the parking brake. The front tires pushed back propelling the car backwards gracefully. He banked the wheel placing him parallel with the white lines on the pavement. He squeezed the shifter button and pulled it into drive. The vehicle hiccupped as it was still in backwards motion as the differential began pushing against the reverse motion.

Derrick dropped his foot on the accelerator and the car then moaned down the apartment complex's driveway. The vehicle's suspension absorbed the rough road and kept the tiny car's body on a smooth path towards the exit.

Suddenly, the llama slammed his hand on the steering wheel and looked back to his parking space. He cursed loudly as he left his coffee sitting on the counter in the kitchen. His mind began racing. Do I have time to go back? Would I be late to work? He thought. The llama began turning back to the road when a fast moving object moving at him in a perpendicular path to- CRASH!

The enormous SUV slammed into the passenger's side of Derrick's Corolla. He bent harshly at the waist where his legs were planted. His spine twisted austerely. Tissues tore in his back as his improperly worn seatbelt grabbed his thighs. Derrick's elbow locked as he tried to catch himself from slamming into the center console, but to no avail has his radius and ulna snapped simultaneously penetrating his soft skin and protruding horrifically from either side of his lower bicep. His neck unfortunately traveled with force onto the exposed bone and punctured his throat.

The llama's head bounced off of the rough plastic center console breaking it and his maxilla. His jaw shattered sending his teeth shooting into the floor and bouncing around the cabin. His upper body was thrown into the upright position as the two vehicles came to a stop, cracking the driver's side window against Derrick's skull.

The pain strangely faded in but was quickly over whelming. He gasped for breath through the blood filling his lungs leaving him unable to scream in unbearable agony due to his torn and twisted spine. His legs remained completely numb. His short arm vibrated and twitched uncontrollably and his good arm clawed in terrible helplessness as he fought against his own body bleeding uncontrollably into his esophagus. On the inside, he screamed continuously in a valiant battle cry against death itself. Agony over came fear and pain over came judgment as he let go. Death became the favorable outcome, if the pain, agony, and anguish would just come to an end despite his overwhelming fear of death.

I then awoke.

Though, the fear still resonates within me.

The fear of never telling Carrie that I love her.

I love you, Carrie.

When I died, all I could think of... was you.
