DRG Lost Miners series

Every quarter, Deep Rock Galactic publishes a large list of miners missing in action. After two weeks, they are considered terminated for not showing up for their shifts. This is to be expected with the many dangers to be found on Hoxxes IV's moon, bathing in the concentrated radiation from the star, Creus.

"May your beards be thick, and your gold pouches heavy" ~ DRG Miner heh...

Radioactive Cave Leech

A lone scout in the Radioactive Inclusion Zone gets nabbed by a common hazard. However, a recent mutation to these pests changes everything.

CW: Peril, brain drain, milking, oviposition, forced

Dwarves are naturally suited to the inhospitable environment of Hoxxes IV B. The moon was filled with diverse treasures and dangers, just ripe for the picking. The dwarf's short stature, naturally sturdy bodies, and resistance to the intense radiation of the nearby star, made them perfect for picking the numerous caverns of the moon clean of useful resources.

Of the various mineral rich environments found on Hoxxes, the blue sun's favorite patch was known as the Radioactive Exclusion Zone. Saturated with the concentrated radiation for millennia, the irradiated pits were filled with ash and mutated flora. To survive in these caves, the organisms had to adapt beneath the onslaught of unending radioactive hell.

A scout zips across the cavernous gap, propelling himself through the air with his trusty grappling hook. The blue streak slipped past a large outcropping of volatile uranium crystals. The neon green spires flashed with a brilliant shine as he landed on a tall ledge. The stereotypically stubborn dwarf insisted on looking for one more fossil for a small bonus with Mission Control.

The rest of his team left the red headed miner for the drop pod, not interested in the annoyance of finding another rock. Mission Control broadcasted their standard warning that the pod's countdown, once activated, could not be stopped. The rocket propelled drill pod would depart without a full complement of miners and the lone scout risked being left beneath Hoxxes.

Without the assistance of his crew, the dwarf carefully picked off a swarm of glyphids closing on his position. His high vantage point and trusty GK2 made quick work of the bugs, leaving them a pile of green goo and shattered exoskeletons. The miner continued his search, firing a few flares to light up a large cavern. He could spot a familiar swirl of an ancient shell sticking out from the far side of the cave wall. He shot his grappling hook and flew off towards the fossil. Upon reaching the chalky gray ledge and securing his bonus, the ginger dwarf made a greenbeard mistake.

"Look out, look up!."

Had the scout stuck with his crew or not been so distracted by his quest for the last fossil, he would have noticed the familiar glow of coming from the stretching jaws of the cave leech above him. The appendage latched onto the red head and dragged him helplessly through the air. This cave leech was a bit different that the common pest found anchored to the ceiling of numerous other caverns. This one had been warped by the intense radiation that bombarded this region.

"Arg! Get it off!" he cried. The main arm of the leech pulled the miner through the air. His heart sank as he could hear the rumbling rockets of the distant drop pod blasting off back to the space rig. He was now abandoned alone in the depths of the Radioactive Inclusion Zone. His name would become another one on a list of many stored in the databanks of the Memorial Hall. The fortunate of the fallen miners die a quick death in the glyphid infested hells of Hoxxes, but this scout would not be so lucky.

The standard cave leech is made of a large stump-like base that acts like the foot of a mollusk and anchors it to the ceiling of caves and caverns. The pink fleshy creature hunts by detecting warm fleshy meat below it and snatching it up with its main tentacle where it's three smaller tendrils with clawed mouths rip into its prey. DRG's R&D could tell, cave leeches developed from a larva-like stage that looks identical to the numerous maggots found in the depths of Hoxxes. However, the origin of the larva remained a mystery...until now.

This cave leech was special. Instead of the standard feeding behavior, this one was entering its breeding cycle, and this poor miner was about to play host for a brood of cave leech eggs. Other mutations found in this auspicious cave leech included adaptive filaments that sprouted from the main mouth. The hair thin filaments pushed right into the dwarf's nose and ear and right into his brain. The scout cried out as he felt the tiny tendrils enter his skull. The dwarf suddenly went limp and twitched a few times before going still as the cave leech reached his frontal lobe.

Along with his voluntary muscle control, his intelligence was also devoured by the ceiling clinging creature. By the time the dwarf reached the base of the leech, he was drooling on himself and his eyes had rolled back into his skull. The three smaller mouths that normally tore the cave leech's prey to bits made quick work of the scout's signature blue mining suit. His uniform and equipment dropped into the depths below. The fleshy tentacles then coated the short and naked body of the miner with a viscous mucus. This allowed his back to stick to the base of the cave leech. His arms were shoved into grooves along the surface of the creature's base. Two of the shorter mouths swallowed each of the dwarf's hairy feet and spread them apart.

The main tentacle continued to suck up what was left of the miner's intelligence. The virtually lobotomized dwarf twitched as the monster's other tentacles began to attach themselves to his body. The last tendril opened its mouthlike end and cupped itself right over the dwarf's open mouth. The hooks on the wide latched on to the scout's head and a nutritious ooze began to flow into his mouth. This would provide the host with all the nutrients it would need for a long time.

In addition to being a feeding tube, the appendage doubled as an ovipositor. Now that the bound dwarf had a belly full of slick goo, it lined the path for another tube that pushed itself out of the tentacle's mouth and past his stomach. The tip now resting in his intestines began to deposit copious amounts of slime and eggs into the miner's guts. The scout's once flat belly inflated with the leech's progeny over the next few minutes.

Once the ovipositor mouth finished laying its clutch within the dwarf, it retracted and slid down along his pregnant abdomen, along his now extended treasure trail and latched onto the miner's cock and balls. The mouth slurped up his organs and began to suck and pump the dwarf's shaft till his cock grew hard. The cave leech would milk the miner of his seed, using it to fertilize its next batch of eggs to deposit into its fresh host. Once the current clutch is passed, the next would be laid and the cycle repeated until the miner was no more.

Another name etched into the databanks found in the memorial halls. Remember, at Deep Rock Galactic, we honor the fallen.

Stowaway - Hazard Warning: Parasites

During a battle with a dreadnaught, the area was also under a parasite hazard. A desperate gunner goes back in orbit with a stowaway.

CW: parasites, infestation, takeover, spreading, gay sex

"Well this is a hell of a predicament," the engineer said to the other dwarves.

This team of dwarven miners found themselves all hanging precariously from their gunner's zip line over a large cavern filled with magma geysers, volcanic vents, and even more concerning, a very pissed off glyphid dreadnaught. To make matters worse, mission control just announced an incoming swarm heading towards their location. What was supposed to be a routine extermination mission had literally turned into a living hell.

The inhospitable area known as the Magma Core is among one of Deep Rock's deepest reaching operations. With ambient temperatures ranging between two hundred and fifty to four hundred degrees and torrents of fire and lava coming from the ground and walls, it's easy to get it confused with hell. Their suits offered adequate protection against most of the ambient temperatures, you could still catch fire easily.

The miners were tired, and this was their last objective. Slay the damn dreadnaught and hightail it back home in the drop pod. The four dwarves exploded as the dreadnought below them lobbed a fireball at the team. Each making their landing, they were cut off from each other and surrounded by their own incoming hordes of smaller glyphids. The brave miners fought on with all they had. Two of them had just slayed the dreadnought and another called for their evac.

At the depths of the cavern, the gunner was alone fighting the last few grunts. He was completely out of ammo and no ziplines to ascend the near vertical walls. His shields were down, and he felt as if he was barely hanging on, things were not looking good for the gunner. With one last mighty cry, he swung his pickaxe down upon the last grunt. The point cracking right through its exoskeleton, killing it.

Unfortunately for this dwarven gunner, the glyphid's head continued to split around the pickaxe hole and two shiny parasites exploded out from its corpse. The miner cries out and manages to crush one with the hilt of his pickaxe. The other flops through the air and lands on the dwarf's bushy black beard. The gunner cursed as the parasite crawled through his beard and right into his open mouth. The stout gunner collapsed, finally succumbing to his injuries, the parasite slipped down the unconscious dwarf's throat and its silvery tendrils disappeared into his mouth and down into his gullet.

Later, the gunner would wake up on the space rig. The emergency rescue drones were able to recover the downed dwarf before the drop pod escaped with the rest of his team, beaten but alive. Normally an x-ray might have revealed the strange biological mass making itself a residence inside the dwarf's skull, but the gunner's skull cap had been replaced by a metallic dome from a bad accident years ago. The metal plate shielded this stowaway from DRG's thorough sterilization protocols.

The dwarf woke up in the space rig's sick bay with a splitting headache. This is not the first time he's had a close call before. His stout dwarven body was covered in various scars from his previous dives. Other than a few other aches and pains aside, looks like the med bots put him back together pretty well. As he laid there on the hospital bed, his headache started to go away. Slowly his pain transformed and moved to his other head, indicated by the rising tent beneath his rather sheer bedsheet.

Since he appeared to be the only occupant in the sickbay, so why not give his rocks a tumble? Normally he'd head back into his bunk and have a quick tug there. Dwarves, the stubborn creatures that they are, would wake up in sickbay and just leave on their own. The med bots don't even bother attempting to schedule them for a follow up because the patient wouldn't bother returning as well as DRG's insurance wouldn't cover it either.

The gunner was feeling quite randy. He ran a callous and meaty hand up and down his hairy chest, giving one of his already hard nipples a pinch. Immediately, his cock throb harder, pre soaking right into the bedsheet. Everything felt so much more sensitive. Then came the blaring beeping of the med bot to attempt to usher the dwarf out now that it registered he was awake. Annoyed and focused on his rigid arousal, the miner flipped the override switch on the back of the robot doctor, shutting him off. The dwarves on the space rig learned this trick when the med bot would start blaring the liver damage alarm every time the lads had more than one brew.

Deactivated and no longer a nuance, the gunner went back to working his forge and hammered upon his hot steel. Beneath the bald head and inside the thick skull of the miner, the parasite's tendrils burrowed and spread into his gray matter. It continued to manipulate its host in preparation to spread. It started with driving up the host hormones. Once the host has been driven to a state to seek out others of their kind, secure a new host to spread to. It only took one to spread from a single glyphid to infest a whole colony.

The dwarf's frustration and pent up need continued to escalate with no release. He needed someone, a warm body, a tight hole, something he could just empty himself into... There was always his bunkmate. Since a recent gamma ray burst from Cerus, part of the space rig was damaged and saturated with high levels of ionizing radiation. Because of this, some of the crew had to double up in their bunks. After a couple of days, they've bumped uglies. Long time on the space rig, the dwarves were known to engage in illicit activities that DRG wrote off as "teamwork exercises".

It was already late when the gunner entered his quarters. His bunk mate had already passed out, looks like he brought back a few mugs from the Abyss Bar. The other dwarf was a chubby driller with a mess of turquoise colored hair and a clean shaven face. The gunner stood in the doorway, the light behind him made his silhouette visible through his sheer sickbay gown. His half drunk bunkmate looked up and could see the gunner standing there with a very prominent erection poking out to the side of his gown.

The stocky dwarf walked up to the driller's bed and ripped off his covers, revealing his completely smooth and naked bronze hide. The bronze dwarf grumbled as he felt the other dwarf spread his legs.

"Oi, frisky aren't we?" the drowsy dwarf said as he adjusted his hips. This wasn't the first time his bunkmate needed urgent release and didn't bother with the nuances of asking, dwarfs were incredibly stubborn creatures. The infested dwarf was already grinding his leaking tip against the round bronze mounds, pressing right against his pucker.

"Ah, slow down!" cried the driller. Already, the gunner had sunk half his cock into his bunkmate. His body was pretty much on autopilot. The parasite had already consumed enough of his brain to start producing another. The dark haired gunner's thrust grew short and rapid, the only thing that mattered was to achieve release. His hips smashed into the other dwarf's bubble ass which had now loosen a bit. The bunkmate had started to enjoy the stouter dwarf's pace, moaning deeply as he started to pound against his prostate.

They were both getting close in their hot and quick rut. As the infested dwarf neared orgasm, he pushed himself atop his partner and kissed him deeply. The gunner's sloppy kiss was tangled a bit with his bushy beard.

"Oh fuck, never kissed before...A-ah. I-I kinda like it," panted the driller.

The gunner kissed him again, slurping his tongue around the other dwarf's mouth. By now the creature in the dwarf's brain had excreted a smaller copy of itself and it started to work itself through the gunner's mouth. The slimy tendrils pulled itself along the dwarf's tongue and started to explore his bronze skinned partner's orifice. A few twirled around their tongues curiously before the new parasite grabbed on to their teeth and darted forward into its new home.

"Mrrph!" the driller cried as he felt the strange slimy mass force itself into his mouth and halfway down his throat. He was forced to swallow the lump in his esophagus as the gunner started to cum. The dwarf hugged his bunkmate tightly as his corrupted fluids started to flood into their new host. The dwarf shuddered as he continued to cum until he passed out on top of the other miner, having achieved the parasite's first conquest on the space rig...DRG would later have to throw the entire space rig into Cerus.

Xynarch Charge-Sucker: New Drill Sucks

A driller testing a new mining harness picks up a hitchhiker that gives his equipment an upgrade.

CW: takeover, milking, parasite, assimilation, mind control, unwilling

When DRG first started their mining operations on Hoxxes IV, there were a great many lessons learned the hard way. This is one of those tales. R&D had developed a nuclear power pack to be used with replaceable steel drill bits. They strapped the battery onto a modified driller's rig, feeding power directly into their hand drills attached to their forearms. The new designs were meant for long term use on Hoxxes and whatever radiation leaks from the drill's power supply could easily be attributed to the radiation that saturates the mineral rich moon.

There was one and only prototype pack created before DRG shifted all funding from this project to the Breakpoint Explosive Transports' combat research. The creator had to test the prototype himself if he had any hopes of securing future funding. The dwarf inventor strapped on his modified driller rig and launched into a cave previously cleared by a group of miners to run his field tests.

This area was known as the fungus bogs and it smells as bad as one can imagine. In a chamber several kilometers below the irradiated surface above, the lone dwarf's personal pod dropped into the dank and dark chamber. Mushrooms and moss grew all along the floors and walls. The dwarf's nose wrinkled when the sides of his pod crumpled, exposing him to the cave's atmosphere. It was so damp, the inventor's boots made muffled splashing noises every step he took.

His trusty all purpose drone illuminated the path in front of him and he prepared to prime his power pack. The new drill's were driven by electric generators powered by the nuclear power cells. The micro reactors took a little while to set up once on site. Another promising feature is that using the drills would produce less noise over their diesel engine counterparts. Drilling would be less likely to grab the attention of a glyphid horde.

While the powercell finished its priming sequence, the miner threw out a few flares to light up the surrounding area. The powercell finally dinged, indicted it was primed and ready. The miner ordered his drone to illuminate a nearby wall as he strapped on his drilling rig. The wall before him was made of dense compacted dirt and should be a basic enough test of its minimal function. With the direct torque powered electric motors, the drills were incredibly powerful. Because of the extra umff, the drills required a harness to anchor the drills that ran along his arms and shoulders instead of just the forearms.

The dwarf gripped each handle and began to squeeze the trigger behind the drill bits. The metal cones began to spin with a soft hum. Pressing the tips into the dirt, the miner turned the drills on full blast. The drills bit into the earth and cut through the wall like butter. It was like pushing against a thick curtain. The cave walls and ground easily gave against the nuclear powered drills. The drills clanged against the rocks, but the motors were near silent as they chewed through rock and stone, turning it all to rubble.

Getting a bit carried away with the promise of revolutionizing the speed and investment needed to move tons of earth easily, the miner fell through a hole as he came through a side wall inside his freshly dug test tunnel. The fall was a short one, but was enough to knock the wind out of the dwarf. He had landed in a sticky puddle of goo, causing him to grimace as the harness made it difficult to push himself up from the ground. Further misfortune is that as stealthy as his drill pack was to the myriad of threats found in the caves of Hoxxes, it still drew the attention of an undiscovered organism.

It looked like some malformed octopod. Its center was a bulbous dome made of a jaundice looking flesh with several purple tentacles sprouting around it in a ring formation. The thing was clinging on a stalactite and detected its favorite food source, electricity. The parasite dropped down onto the dwarf's powerpack, seeking to sink its tendrils into its incredibly potent meal. As soon as it tapped into a hot wire, it drank in the vast power and grew in size.

The driller started to panic, unable to stand back up from the sticky green goop. The growing alien mass upon his back continued to weigh him down, but he was able to crawl to the edge of the pool of slime.

"Bosco! Give me a hand," he commanded. The drone beeped and flew over to the encumbered dwarf. It fired a few shots carefully into the center mass of the creature before the dwarf screamed again.

"Dammit! Don't shoot the power cell, you'll make another crater you can see from orbit!"

The drone gave a disheartened beep and tried to shock the thing off. By now the parasite had doubled in size and easily snatched the drone from the air and consumed its batteries dry. The creature tossed the inert drone to the side and refocused its larger meal, drinking all it could from the potent energy cells.

This parasitic power sapping creature would later be named the xynarch charge sucker. These many limbed critters are drawn to strong electromagnetic fields as they feed on power and copper inside much of the more complex equipment that mining consortiums have tried to use on Hoxxes, it would be discovered they also have an innate ability to corrupt and reprogram some of the basic functions of self automated machines.

The sucker continued to gorge itself upon the powercell. Its tastes were not limited to circuits and raw electricity. The electrical impulses found in the brains of dwarfs could also be fed upon by the charge suckers. Normally no dwarf would remain still long enough for one of these large parasites to properly attach itself to them, but this unfortunate soul was trapped in the drilling harness, unable to free himself from the corrupting grip of his captor.

Tiny tendrils started to slither around the immobile dwarf's head. A couple slipped into his ears and a few others crept through his blond mustache and into his nose. He cried out and struggled helplessly as the parasite started to enter the helpless man's skull. The sucker pushed its tips into the dwarf's brain and fed upon the electrical impulses firing off. The taste of panic and fear was disgusting, so the sucker decided to make some changes.

No different than corrupting the software of mining equipment. The charge sucker began to corrupt the dwarf's brain and started to poke and prod around, experimenting with various impulses until it came across one it liked. The dwarf let out a deep moan as he felt his cock throb and grow inside his suit. He was no longer in control of his body, the sucker started to stimulate his brain directly, forcing him to orgasm. The wet spot began to spread on his crotch as his balls emptied themselves.

The charge sucker found the taste of neurons firing off during the dwarf's orgasm was beyond delicious. It simply had to have more and began to anchor itself to its new host and feed off this new addictive sensation. It would milk the paralyzed dwarf into intense and long orgasms, leaving time to reset between each milking. The parasite rewired the dwarf's brain to optimize feeding off this new sensation. It slurped down all his memories and intelligence, leaving a drooling and empty mind. It's only purpose was to process the mouthwatering endorphins.

The power pack would never see its use again in the depths of Hoxxes. Decades later when the lost miner's blackbox is recovered and some poor sap had to document every orgasm the infected dwarf had till his body succumbed to its inevitable end, everyone was glad they stuck with diesel powered drills.

Brood Nexus Research

An engineer discovered the secret to the formation of Hoxxes IV's many mysteries and menaces.

CW: parasites, absorption, swallowing, melding, transformation

Down in the depths of the Azure Weald, an engineer embarks upon a research expedition to explore the curious life cycle of a common pest for miners, the glyphid brood nexus. This engineer worked for R&D's xenobiology department when he wasn't mining. His current field research led him to a relatively hidden chamber inside the underground twilight jungle.

Past a thicket of glowing blue lichen, standing upon a flat patch of ground was a smaller specimen. Even though this was about half the size of the commonly seen ones, it still sported three large glowing green eyes that searched for threats. The engineer setup his turrets and they would fire occasionally as the nexus spat out a few swarmers at a time. It was a well known fact that glyphids hatched from eggs and grew into their medium variants.

The pale skinned dwarf stroked his salt and peppered beard as he walked around the brown fleshy structure. He pressed and studied the nexus' leathery exterior, it seemed to squish a bit. He could feel something squirming beneath the surface, most likely a copy of a swarmer reading to pop out from the nearest orifice.

As the dwarf continued to study the organic protuberance, he would stop occasionally to refill his turrets. He set up some equipment to analyze samples collected from the specimen. He worried he would run out of ammo and would have to request a supply drop, but after over the course of an hour, this smaller nexus seemed to stop spawning swarmers. The turrets continued to swivel, looking for a target.

The engineer looked around for any explanation about the new behavior. Normally these things would just keep popping out a few swarmers until they were gunned down or the miners would just leave the area and they would go inactive again. The dwarf waved his pickaxe around and watched the green eyes follow the axehead. It definitely was still aware of him, but perhaps it no longer identified him as a threat? This could be an interesting discovery.

Curious for more data, the dwarf began to feel around the pulsating mound again. He could still feel squirming lumps beneath its surface. He looked around and his fingers brushed across a tight fold between two of its eyes. The researcher gently prodded the area with his fingers and found the fold split open. The parting flesh revealed a tight tunnel, what most likely would be used for pushing out newly birthed swarmers. The fleshy opening pulsated like the rest of its body and seemed not to react to his probing.

Figuring that his glove should provide enough protection should a swarmer attempt to nip him, he gently pushed his hand into the opening, and it sank right into the brood nexus. Nothing bit at him, so he pushed a bit deeper and could feel more of the same squirming he could feel before. He pulled out his hand, now coated in a clear and slick slime. The dwarf turned to note the new orifice in his journal. As he turned around, a different looking type of swarmer began to crawl out of the opening he was probing.

This slimy green creature was shaped like a swarmer with a bulbus torso and six legs. The thing slid out and opened its arms just in time to latch onto the dwarf's face. His cries were muffled as the slimy and jelly like thing gripped onto his head. It tightened its hold, threatening to strangle the researcher. The dwarf frantically tried to rip the thing from his face but couldn't get a grip on the slimy coating. Unable to breath, he passed out and collapsed onto the ground. The tendrils of the brood nexus would drag the dwarf's body into another orifice hidden at the base of the structure.

It pushed the dwarf inside and deposited him into a cavity in the center of the brood nexus. The chamber was filled with numerous tendrils and appendages that ranged from five fingered hands to glyphid claws and legs. They tore off his clothing and the creature that was attached to his face. Another tentacle like appendage snaked into his unconscious mouth. A thicker tube snaked between his hairy ass cheeks and right up his pucker. They both sank into the dwarf as it prepared to absorb and replicate its new organic sample.

The tentacles begin to pump the unconscious dwarf with a slimy slurry of enzymes that would break his body down to be absorbed by the rest of the nexus. His belly bulged as he was filled with copious amounts of nexus slime from both ends. It would gather more of the dwarf's DNA by a special extraction tube that swallowed his cock and balls. Inside the milking tube would pulsate and slurp on his cock until it produced a rich load of genetic material which would lead to its demise. Dwarf DNA would be incompatible with glyphid DNA making the nexus essentially sterile.

Over the course of a month of harvesting, this would lead to another change that would remain undiscovered. When a brood nexus absorbs incompatible samples, it undergoes a different transformation. The surface becomes uniform and smooth. Then the flesh hardens into a dense shell and the base turns into a blue like root system that anchors it through adjacent walls and ceiling. By the time DRG satellite sensors can detect these odd organic structures, they end up calling in an extermination team because they have become dreadnought cocoons.
