Chapter 7: Mines of Temptation

Getting down from the mountains was surprisingly easy, even without the escort that they'd had getting up. Fox had expected more of an ambush on the way back, but apparently the twin factors of how well he and Krystal had dealt with the last fight and how Garunda Te was starting to rally the Snowhorns still on the planet meant that the Sharpklaw were having to tread a bit softer in the mountains. They'd be careful until they could reestablish the superiority that they'd lost.

That said, that would mean that the man in charge of the Sharpklaw army, this General Scales, would be hearing about the rebellion soon. That meant that he and Krystal would have to take care of the whole DarkIce Mine problem quickly, before Scales decided that it was time to make an example of the Snowhorn species.

They reached the waters of Thorntail Hollow a few hours after setting out from the peaks, and Fox walked over to his ship. The Arwing was still in good condition, the hard armor and the security shield having kept it safe from the few dinosaurs that decided it'd be a good idea to try and nudge up against the thing. He could see a few impact points in the ground, places where there was a slight char in the grass where the shield had needed to be a bit more persuasive to get the dinosaurs to leave it alone. Nothing too bad, and no blood. He imagined that they'd made their attempt and then left in embarrassment.

As he pulled the access key for his ship from his pocket, he glanced out of the corner of his eye. Krystal was seated on a nearby rock, talking to Prince Tricky. The Earthwalker looked like he was happy enough to talk, even to a meat-eater, and he wondered what was going on over there.

He shook his head. Not his business. He wasn't here to get involved in politics.

"Hey, Peppy, you there?" he muttered into his communicator.

"Peppy here. What's up?" the old hare asked, his voice slightly hazy from the lower volume Fox had set the device to.

"It's looking like I'm going to have to go off-planet to one of the orbiting chunks. I've got some intel that there should be an opening now; what're the scanners saying?"

"Well, looks like there's been some sort of wormhole that's opened between one of them and the planet below. Are you responsible for that, Fox?"

"I didn't make it, but saved the guy that did." He nodded. So Garunda Te hadn't been just bragging when he said that he could get them there. That was good. "And the force field around it?"

"Still there, but like I said, there's a wormhole between the planet and it, now."

"Good enough. I'll be taking the Arwing up momentarily."

"Do you need anything?"

"Yeah. Think you could aim an orbital drop through the wormhole?"

"...Maybe? Slippy probably could, but no guarantees. What do you want?"

"Ammo. I'm down to twenty shots right now, and there's plenty more of the enemy. And..." He glanced over his shoulder again, looking at the bare-breasted vixen on the rock, and he blushed. "And a jumpsuit."

"Why? You look like you're fine."

"I've picked up company, and she's not exactly...dressed."

"...She? You sly dog..."

"Just send the goods, Peppy. I'll be airborne in an hour."

He cut the communications there, shaking his head at the perverted hare. One way or another, he was going to have to do something. Maybe he'd just send Peppy to Corneria for some shore leave after this. Hell, if they were getting paid ten million credits, then he could afford to send the old man out for some fun.

Shaking his head, he tapped the card against the cockpit of the ship, and the shield fell. The glass top opened, and he flung himself into the cockpit, shifting around and getting comfortable again.

Of course, that did lead to one small problem that he hadn't had the opportunity to consider until that point.

How the hell am I going to get both of us up there?

The cockpit was fairly roomy for just one pilot, that was true, but having another person inside was going to take up all that spare room and then some. Not to mention that she would have to sit right on his lap, and considering that they'd be going right to the Mines before she could get that jumpsuit...

Well, that blue butt was going to cause some reactions, that was for sure. And as much as she'd been fine with his 'mating thoughts' so far, and the way that she had implied that she'd be willing to take that further at the river, he didn't want to push it. There was such a thing as professionalism between soldiers, though this was pushing it to the edges of what he could take.

Fox shook his head, working on the start-up process with the ship and occasionally stealing glances at the loincloth-wearing vixen across the way.

Krystal could tell that Fox was staring at her, and perhaps, just perhaps, she was doing a little bit to encourage that. It gave her quite the warm feeling to have someone looking at her and loving it like that, particularly someone that was respectful enough to keep his hands off unless invited.

Not that she would have minded that at some point, but they were busy at the moment. And very busy, for that matter.

She leaned back, enjoying the warm light on her body, occasionally reaching up to adjust her breasts when one felt like it was sagging a bit too far to one side, or when it felt a bit uncomfortable in one place. Much as she was finding herself enjoying the exposure, there was something to be said for the support. She'd need to figure out something to do with that. But until then -

"So, you're getting a Spellstone, right?" Tricky asked.

"Hmm? Yes, that's what Garunda Te said we needed to do."

"Did he...tell you what it's for?"

"He implied that it was the key to bringing the planet back together, yes."

"Yeah...that's what, um, what you're going to need me for. Later, anyway."

"Oh?" Krystal asked, pulling her legs up, resting her soles on the warm stone. "Do tell."

"It's part of the whole Earthwalker royalty thing. We're supposed to keep things in balance. At least, that's what my mom told me," he said, looking over his shoulder back towards the temple. "We're the ones that keep the land safe, and so, we...look after things. Not like the Cloudrunners. Buncha meat-eaters, but..."

"But?"

"...We don't like them, and I guess it's not important," Tricky said, shaking his head. "B-but the important thing is that you gotta bring the Spellstones back. If General Scales has one of them, then he's probably got all of them. They've gotta go back to their focus points."

"I see..."

She nodded a few times, resting her chin on her knees. For all that the Spellstones sounded important, Krystal had to admit that she was a little...disappointed.

Ever since landing at Krazoa Palace, she had been aware of a different power in the land, something that was spread through the earth, or at least, should have been. However, it hadn't been until she had reached the palace and found her way into the shrine, finding the Krazoa spirit itself, that she had realized what the planet was missing. There was a great life force that wasn't quite there, something that was missing with the spirits all hiding in their shrines rather than being present in the world.

Something was hunting them, that much was clear. Was it Scales, she wondered? Or was there some other force out there, something that was pulling the strings? Certainly, from everything that she had heard from Tricky and seen in his mind, this was not how things had always been. The Earthwalkers had kept things stable, and while it was a bit of a tyrannical regime for anyone that didn't eat plants, they had managed to keep the peace.

Something had changed, and recently.

"Tricky?"

"Yeah?"

"Do you know anything about the Krazoa spirits?"

"Krazoa? You mean, like the palace?"

"And the spirits that were meant to be housed there, yes."

"Well, um, my dad mentioned some stuff about them," he said, scuffing the ground with one foreleg. "I don't know if I'm supposed to talk about it."

Krystal narrowed her eyes. It was one thing to be respectful of another's mind when they were thinking private things, but it was another thing to hold back something like this. And considering that she could feel that this was mostly down to suspicion of her as a meat-eater, she didn't feel particularly bad about reaching further. Her curiosity made it all the easier for her to justify it for herself.

She reached into Tricky's mind, sliding into his memories. She could make out a few things, but most of it was buried under the haze of time, things that were half-remembered, at best.

Still, the speech from the old King Earthwalker stood out.

"The Krazoa are the great forces of the natural world, and that makes them dangerous. They embody all that is life, and not all life is good. They are the power of the prey, and the power of the predators entwined in one. Useful, yes, but dangerous if they are ever allowed to be let loose. They are to be used to keep the land safe, and no more."

It was little more than she already knew, but to see that the Earthwalkers distrusted the Krazoa spirits to such a degree was certainly interesting. They were still fulfilling their duty to protect the Krazoa at the palace, at least, when she'd been there, but they did not trust the Krazoa to do anything beyond the minimum. They expected a betrayal, or at least, a wildness to come free the moment that the leash came off.

Is that a risk? she wondered.

She remembered the Krazoa spirit that she had carried for a time, and what it had done to her while she had it in her system. It had made her feel...powerful. Not necessarily violent, but more in touch with the feeling of life in the air, more in tune with nature, and...

And definitely more...

She blushed slightly, remembering just how sensual it had been within her, how it had 'tested' her, and she wondered just how much of that had been required and how much of that had been done for the Krazoa's own pleasure. It was not likely that a ghostly being such as that could feel pleasure, save through the enjoyment of other beings, but she supposed that it was possible.

She shook her head. Best not to dwell on that, lest she give Tricky a show that she was more ready to give Fox at the moment.

"Why do you want to know?" Tricky asked, innocently unaware of how she'd peered into his mind.

"Because I don't think that the Spellstones will be enough."

"They've gotta be. That's what kept everything in balance in the first place!"

"A prisoner may break his chains, but you will need more than chains to capture them again."

"What's that mean?"

"It means, the thing that holds something back is not necessarily the thing you need to put it back into place."

Glancing out of the corner of her eye, she saw Fox waving at her, and she pushed herself off the rock.

"It's time for me to go, Tricky. Try and take care of everything here in the Hollow. Your mother needs your help, and...she is still injured. Take care of things for her before she realizes that she needs to step in, and things will be easier for her. She'll recover faster that way."

And it would keep someone that wasn't so indoctrinated in the fear of the meat-eaters to start taking charge for once. She knew that Tricky wanted to help his mother, and she knew that he wanted to be a good prince. This was the way that he could do that, and it would start loosening some of the deathgrip that the old monarchy had on things. It would only be for the better if there was a little more flexibility at the top.

She patted the Earthwalker on the head and jogged over to Fox. The earth gave under her feet as she leaped onto the nose of his craft, and he chuckled as she hopped over the edge and into his lap.

"Heh, that eager to get into space?" he asked.

"I'm certainly curious. Are you able to fly with me sitting here?"

"Well, I wouldn't want to get into a dogfight, but I can make it work."

"Really?"

Krystal shifted slightly, feeling something pop up between her legs. She could feel the embarrassment pouring off of the pilot behind her, and she slowly reached down, gripping the bulge that was pressing against the back of her thigh.

"I feel like you might have a second control stick, Fox...perhaps this would be better...out of the way."

She gently nudged it backwards, allowing it to nestle between her cheeks. The warmth and stiffness was...surprisingly nice. Flattering, in its own way, like the stares that she'd been enjoying given more physical evidence. Of course, she didn't plan on teasing him during the flight, as that would be dangerous...but there might be something worth doing later.

I wonder how something real would feel...back there...

Because one thing was for sure. She was not risking children. Not now, and not for some time.

The flight through the wormhole was easy, just as he had expected. Even with the distraction of a lovely, soft, muscular rump against his crotch, the experienced vulpine was able to pilot his ship through the portal with ease, and soon, they were flying over the chunk of land that had been ripped out of the planet.

"DarkIce Mines..."

He looked over the readings that the scanners were pulling up. Most of it was underground, as might have been expected for a mine, but he was getting a lot of readings where the Sharpklaw had set up defensive positions, from turrets to mines in the river to going so far as to build up fortresses between them and the Mine. It was like a total occupation force, waiting for anyone from the planet to come through.

Or...no. This was different. The turrets were pointed towards the Mine, and while they could be rotated around, they clearly were set up to keep people in, not keep others out. This was...

"It's a prison," Krystal said, looking out the window. "A prison and a labor camp."

"Yeah. They're holding most of the Snowhorns hostage as workers to keep up good behavior on the planet..."

"And from the looks of things, the Mines are still productive."

Fox nodded. He could see the stores of ore that had been yanked out of the ground. That was probably going towards arms and armor for Scales and his men, something to improve all the gear that they had. If they didn't do something about that, the Sharpklaws that they faced in the future might be that much harder to beat.

He had planned to come in a bit quieter, to land further off and sneak towards the Mines, but with everything in the way, he doubted that would go well. He reached around Krystal to his console, tapping the communicator button. He made sure that video didn't engage, either; he wasn't feeding the rest of his crew images of the vixen in front of him. Not just yet.

"Peppy, how's the package looking?"

"It's aimed and ready to fire as soon as you're ready for it, Fox."

"Set a timer for five minutes. I'm going to clear a landing zone."

He turned the communicator off again, only to find Krystal looking back at him with a raised eyebrow. Fox cocked his head to the side.

"What?"

"You believe that you can make it safe to land in five minutes?"

"You don't know what this baby can do." He smiled. "Let me show you."

It didn't take five minutes. It took two.

The devastation that the Arwing's lasers could unleash was impressive even on the galactic scale, but against a force that had nothing better than physical cannons and wooden barricades, it might as well have been the wrath of God coming down on the surface below. He turned snow to steam, dirt to glass, and wooden barricades to fiery ash. The cannons were destroyed and the Sharpklaw that manned them were sent running to the hills or into the Mines, fleeing from what he had done.

And through it all, Krystal stared, her eyes locked on the destruction that had come about.

"This...this is what the universe has come to?" she whispered as they circled over the damage.

"Pretty much. You didn't think that ships used blasters only, did you?" Fox asked.

"I was impressed by that. I am..."

"Speechless?"

"That is one word. This might have been...excessive."

Fox looked around, and she could tell that he felt a little embarrassed. Perhaps he thought that she'd be impressed by this, and in a way, she was. In another, however, she felt as if she had witnessed something horrifying. Necessary, perhaps, but horrifying, nonetheless.

They'd be no more dead if I hit them with a stick, she thought. But it feels less...right.

They found a place where the ashes weren't too thick near the Mines, and they landed. The ship popped the top, and Krystal dragged herself free. The air didn't stink of dead bodies, thankfully, but the smoke was still heavy on the air.

"Send the goods when you can, Peppy," Fox said, and followed her out. "Are you okay?"

"I will be."

"...Are you sure?"

She nodded, taking one breath after another. In war, sometimes horrible things were necessary. That was something that all soldiers knew. That didn't make it better, nor did it make it more tolerable.

She shook her head as she stepped forward -

"AH!"

And immediately yelped as her toes hit hot rock. She gritted her teeth as she took a step back, shaking her head and curling her toes at the discomfort.

"Yeah, the Mines are underground...and from the smell of it, they're somewhere deep enough for fire and magma to be a thing," Fox said, shaking his head.

Krystal nodded, rubbing her toes. It wasn't a full burn, but she'd definitely gotten a light scald from that step. She was going to have a really unpleasant time with this, she was sure, and her staff was definitely going to get a workout.

POOMF!

There was a dull thud in the distance, and the blue vixen cocked her head to the side.

"What was that?"

"Oh, that's the package. Just, uh, brace yourself."

She was learning more and more about the tech that this world had, and she crossed her arms, waiting for whatever this package might be. She didn't have to wait long.

A solid metal box slammed into the ground about twenty feet away from the Arwing, and Fox chuckled.

"Looks like Slippy's still got it," he said, walking over to the package. "Should have everything we need here. Some more ammo for me, and some - oh, you're fucking KIDDING me!"

"What?"

"Nothing!"

"...Fox? What is the matter?" she asked, taking a step forward.

"Just...God, that hare..."

He was so focused on whatever it was that she didn't even have to consider breaking her decision to not look into his mind. He broadcasted the image of the problem right into hers. The package contained a blue and black jumpsuit, something that would have hugged her tightly, covered her from toes to neck, and...and been as if she was wearing something that was painted onto her rather than something that would have actually given her any sort of modesty. Not that she was looking for modesty these days, but it would have assured her that she wasn't getting any regardless.

She looked at the image in his mind, looked at herself, and then at the Mines. She could see the 'boob window' - another term in his mind - that would lift her breasts up and put them more on display than ever. She could see that it was made of a material that would insulate her, a lot, and she shook her head. The only usable part of it, as far as she could see, were the boots, and those seemed to be attached.

"I think that you should leave it in the box."

"What? How did you -"

"You are thinking very loud. It isn't possible for me to miss what it is."

"Oh, fuck...I'm sorry. I don't know what came over them."

"Something funny to them, I am sure. Take what you need, and we will see if that is useful later."

Fox took a deep breath as he pulled his ammo clips from the box. That brought total shots up to eighty with the two new ammo containers. Eighty shots against everything that might or might not be in the Mines. He was going to have to ration that, just in case, but he hoped that it'd be close to enough. With Krystal fighting alongside him, and with how good she was in melee, he was pretty sure that it would be.

Fucking hell, Peppy. Really? The sex suit? That fucking thing?

They'd gotten that as a joke when some prostitute came by, and had her wear it to pretend that she was part of the team for the night. It looked all military at first, and then you realized that it emphasized all the curves of a woman, made them look like they'd been painted rather than were wearing anything official. It was a bit demeaning, completely fetishized, and he still wasn't sure if he wanted her to wear it more than he wanted her to keep the loincloth on.

Fox shook his head, jamming the box shut. He'd talk to Peppy about that later. For now, they had a Mine to invade.

"Ready?" he muttered as he jammed the ammo packs into his belt.

"Ready as I can be."

"You going to be okay with the hot floor?"

"I'll have to be, won't I?"

"Any tricks with your staff for this one?"

"One, but it would cost me a great deal of energy."

"Then, uh, I'll see what I can to pick a path."

Fox took point, leading the way down from the landing pad further into the Mines. The cavern mouth quickly fell behind as the floor sloped downwards, taking them first to a spiraling path, and then to a series of rails.

Not much tech, but at least it's better than nothing, he thought, kicking it with his boot. Not electrified, either. All push power and leverage.

With Krystal following behind, they pushed deeper into the Mine, following the rails into the depths. It didn't take long for them to leave the cold winds of the upper levels behind, and as soon as the cutting air no longer touched them, Fox felt the heat, too. His jacket and shirt were soon stained with sweat, and he groaned as he wiped his forehead repeatedly as they went further in. He could only imagine how Krystal felt, what with her occasional yips and whimpers of pain behind him.

It didn't get better as the rails led them to the processing center of the mine. Various conveyor belts pulled different bits of dug-out ore through streams of fire, and the constantly-pulsing, frequently-spitting streams of heat made it feel like he was descending into a sun again. He groaned, pulling his jacket open, flapping it back and forth a few times to try and get the air moving, but it didn't do a damn thing.

He gave into the inevitable, pulling his jacket and shirt off and tying them around his waist. Krystal chuckled, and he groaned.

"What?"

"Oh, just amused that we're taking steps towards equality."

She joined him at the edge of the path, the pair of them squatting down on a cliff that overlooked the processing center of the mines. The rails led further down a sloped path, one that eventually would take them to the center of the mass of conveyor belts. He ignored the way that her body shined beside him, how she was soaked with sweat and how she smelled...

Well, not unpleasant. There was a certain musk there that was surprisingly desirable, and one that made his cock stir in his pants again. The fact that there was a naked pair of breasts right to his side didn't hurt, either.

He found himself glancing at her out of the corner of his eye for a moment before he forced himself to focus again, staring straight ahead. She had never stopped looking over their enemies, and he couldn't afford to let her do all the work.

"So, see anything worth trashing?" he asked.

"We aren't here for sabotage, are we?"

"No, but it might pull some of the officers out of hiding. Make enough trouble, someone'll have to come out and take charge."

"A good plan, but I must admit, I don't understand the machinery enough to know where to start."

Neither did he, though that was because it was so primitive that all he could think to do was bash it or blast it until it stopped moving. There was no console or other obvious weak point that he could use to do something sneaky. It would have to be broken apart until...until...

His eyes slipped over to Krystal again, finding it more than a little difficult to look away from the vixen. She had slid forward a bit further, stretching her legs out as she sat on the edge of the cliff. Apparently, she found that more comfortable than squatting, not that he could blame her. She rubbed her hands over her head, pulling at her fur and stretching a bit, and the way that her body just...shimmered...

His cock had never been so hard as it was right at that moment, and he groaned as he felt a powerful urge to just...grab her. Their mission wasn't that dependent on time, and she was showing off so much. He could just...

Fox was halfway towards reaching out for her before he stopped himself, slapping his cheek. Krystal looked back at him.

"Did I cause that?"

"Yes, you did."

"I apologize. I will make it up to you later," she said.

The following brazen pat to his crotch did not make things better. It really, really didn't, because it made him want to take it out and just show it off, to get what he had been denied at the river, and -

Another slap. Fuck, his face hurt.

Before he could get distracted by her body again, Krystal pointed towards a set of cages that he had missed. They loomed over the rest of the processing center, and something was moving in them. He shaded his eyes, staring through the heat shimmers until he could make out what they were.

Snowhorns. Captive Snowhorns.

"I believe a jail break might be suitable."

"That wouldn't be a bad start. If nothing else, they'd have something to tell us."

"Shall we?"

"Yeah...yeah, let's do that."

Before I start wanting to fuck you even more.

-even more.

He was getting so wound up that she could hear him in her head more clearly than ever, and it was quite the experience. Krystal wasn't unfamiliar with the feeling of a man lusting over her, and had become somewhat used to it when she had been traveling through the universe. Her clothing, after all, hadn't been particularly good for disguising her body or keeping her assets from being on display to the idle viewer. She knew what she inspired, and she knew the consequences that might come from it.

That said, she also had never had someone that was this amorous before, and it was inspiring little things in her behavior, as well. She was showing off, and the blue-furred vixen knew she was showing off. There was no reason to squat with her legs spread, or to sit with her loincloth all but thrown to the side, or to move and sway in a way that kept her breasts on the move. It was all done to get attention, and she knew that.

But it was still fun, and she still wanted more.

As they followed the rail-tracks down the slope, she couldn't help but stare at Fox from behind. He had a cute rump that swayed like her own, though nowhere near as much, but she dearly wished that she had an excuse to look at him as much as he looked at her. The fact that he was going topless now, showing off a body that was not bulky, but rather fine with muscle, appealed quite a bit. She would have liked the chance to feel that against her the way that she had felt him in Snowhorn Wastes, just...without clothes, this time.

And the scent was nice. Not harsh, not foul, but a soft smell of another body, warm and lovely. She sniffed the air again as she followed behind him, only to feel her loincloth starting to stick between her legs.

...Hmm...

Normally, she'd have been slightly embarrassed by that, but at this point, she was horned up enough that she wasn't really that inconvenienced. She rather liked the idea that perhaps Fox would turn around and see that, knowing what she was feeling and wanting. Perhaps it might encourage him to start being a bit more open with his 'mating thoughts.'

She took another step and had a sudden searing hiss underfoot. She gritted her teeth, pulling out her staff to use for support, keeping up with him.

They reached the conveyor belts, and they went quiet. The Sharpklaw were patrolling on the moving belts overhead, which meant that they had to crawl on the ground to avoid being seen. There wasn't much room, either, and only one of them could move ahead of the other.

Krystal smiled as Fox looked back at her. Before he could take point, she covered his mouth, and thought at him.

_I can think at you if I see something. You can't. Let me go first.

But...then I'll be staring at your -

Is that a bad thing?

...

Your arousal says not. I'll go first, and you can...enjoy the view._

The End
