During "First Shift" every shifter becomes their animal self for about a year in in order for their human and animal selves to acclimate to their new animal form. Ordinarily the individual has a teacher or guide, however this can prove very dangerous in predator/prey circumstances. This is why Prowl-Ar uses the VR chamber and memory crystals to cheat the consequences. At the end of "First Shift" the human has no memory of what happened in their animal state with one exception every shifter will remember one traumatic incident that will haunt them for the rest of their lives.

Prowl-Ar didn't have a guide. While he used the VR Chamber he had it set to Master Level with all safeties shut down reasoning if he couldn't survive, he didn't deserve to be a shifter.

This is his experience as best as he was able to describe it.
