Follow the Leader

A fun, slightly cartoony idea I came up with. The idea for the setting was supplied by rabbitinafoxden! Check their stuff out here --> https://www.furaffinity.net/user/rabbitinafoxden

The myth about lemmings following each other off of a cliff is a false one, but I still thought I could have some fun with it.

This is set some time after First Encounter, a good way into Reni and Roy's relationship.

The wind blew softly in his face as Roy walked down the sidewalk, hands dejectedly in his hoodie pockets. The only thing he'd had on the agenda for today was to find something to eat, and despite spending all day, he'd managed to fail. Stopping at an intersection to wait at the crosswalk, he leaned back to look at the sky, it's slowly shifting colors changing with the sunset to his left. His wings and abs ached from flying all day, and they hurt worse since he had nothing to show for it, as if they were accusing him.

The little green man appeared on the crossing signal, and he crossed with a sigh, lamenting a day without food. Not that it meant too much, he could go a solid three days on nothing but water if he was well fed and recently he definitely fit into that category. Probably fit too well, he mused as he turned left, down the smaller street his apartment was on. Maybe a day of fasting and exercise would be good for him.

Unless... His eye caught a group of small lemmings, probably only a quarter of his size, walking the other way on the sidewalk. They seemed to blend into each other, it was impossible to tell how many there actually were. No harm in a little snack, keep the energy up, right? Keeping his cool, never turning his head to face the pack lest they spook, he prepared himself. They lined up in single file to allow him room to pass, as if by instinct. As soon as Roy was parallel with the first one, he struck, snagging the small creature by the scruff and sliding it head and shoulders into his mouth.

He could taste an earthy tone on the lemming's fur, before he gulped, encasing more than half of the stunned creature into his gullet. A second, and it was gone, the bulge it made in his neck disappearing behind his hoodie just as quick. He felt it travel through his chest before the feeling disappeared into his stomach, the helpless prey hardly big enough to feel on its own.

He turned to look behind him, curious what the pack had done. It would've been smarter to try and snag the last one, but the lemmings were milling around the spot their leader had disappeared, confused. Roy considered going back, but shrugged and kept walking. It was no fun if they were oblivious, and it wasn't good to obliterate entire packs if he didn't need to.

Licking his lips as he walked down the sidewalk, he used his tongue to pick at something lodged in his teeth. Probably lemming fur, it was surprising such a small animal and quick meal had left something behind. Focusing on trying to dislodge it, he was home and walking up the stairs to Reni's apartment before he knew it.

The door was locked. Roy guessed it must be a little late for him to be coming home through the front door instead of their small balcony. Reaching into his pocket, he fumbled for his keys, before jumping at a small tugging on the leg of his sweatpants. Looking behind him, his eyes widened in shock.

It was the lemmings! Just like before, he couldn't tell how many of them there were, or if there were less or somehow more. They blended together, like a sea of brown, white, and black fur.

"Excuse me sir, are you the one who took our leader?" A female voice spoke to him, the one who had tugged on his pants, looking up at him with confident eyes.

Roy fumbled for a moment, rarely confronted like this. "Uhh, yes? If your leader disappeared a few minutes ago, that was me." He still couldn't quite feel the rodent trapped inside him, but he knew it was there.

"Well, we have to follow our leader." The lemming stated to nods of approval from the ones behind her.

"I'm sorry, you what?" It was at this moment a lock turned, and the door behind Roy opened to showcase Reni, who stopped and stared at the scene on her doorstep.

Her hair was pulled back into a ponytail, as it often was when she was home, and she was in a simple t-shirt and pajama pants, already prepared for the night.

"I heard you fumble with the lock, thought you might have forgotten your key again. Who have you brought home?" Reni raised an eyebrow, clear blue eyes piercing into Roy's shocked amber irises.

"Hello miss!" A greeting was echoed from the pack of small creatures behind him, impossible to tell from whom it originated, until the one in the front spoke up. "We're trying to follow our leader! But this big dragon is keeping him from us!"

Roy gestured at his middle, not wanting to break whatever illusion the lemmings were under. "I was just about to let them in, so I could let them all do just that!" Roy ad libbed, winking to cover his momentary shock, hoping his meaning carried off on the persian in the doorway.

Understanding dawned on her face, before a wide, giddy grin broke it. "Well certainly, come on in!" Reni moved from the doorway, gesturing into the rather regular apartment.

The group of rodents paused, before looking up at the tall dragon. "Right, followers." He muttered to himself before stepping forward, crossing the threshold into his and Reni's apartment even as the pack gathered around his legs, some only barely avoiding his steps. Not wanting to waste any time, he broke the velcro straps holding the back of his hoodie down and slipped his head out, tossing it aside before sitting on the couch. One of these free snacks could come to their senses at any time, and it would only take one new leader for them all to run right back out the door.

Two of them scrambled up onto the couch, standing next to where he sat. Reni had followed, and was now leaning on the armrest, trying (and failing) to find the original female who had spoken at the door. "So you guys really are dedicated to following the one at the front, huh?" She asked, unable to contain her curiosity.

"Yep!" Spoke the one on Roy's left, a male this time, judging by his voice. "Whenever we go out, we designate one person to be the leader! And wherever they go, we go. We get lost too easily to trust ourselves." There were more nods among the small crowd around Roy's legs.

"Well don't let me stop you!" Arriving at the moment of truth, Roy opened his jaw to the one who had just spoken. Widening it as far as he could, he lowered his head so that the small lemming could reach up and climb in. The two foot tall rodent reached up and grasped onto Roy's sharp teeth, but didn't have the strength to pull himself all the way in. Lowering his left hand, he offered it as a footstool.

That was all the extra height the soon-to-be meal needed, using the stepping stone to stuff himself head-first into the waiting maw. With the lemming pushing himself in, it only took one long swallow to completely engulf him, the snack traveling down his throat faster than the first. He licked his lips as he felt the rodent settle. If he couldn't feel one, he could feel two. Would three finally make a shape on his still flat belly? Turning to the one on his right, he offered the same open maw and footstool, even as a member of the crowd around his legs scrambled up the couch to replace the first.

Reni watched in awe as Roy gulped down what she thought was the seventh. He hadn't missed a beat since the third, and his gut had started to swell on the fourth. He was onto the 8th, moving like a predator possessed. Which he might just be, Reni thought as a chill ran down her spine. Reaching forward, she pressed her hands against his slowly growing middle, feeling the deposit of the tenth, or was it the eleventh?

Realizing she'd lost count, she moved around in front of the gluttonous dragon, kneeling to get a better feel of his gut as it grew with each rodent consumed. His scales began to push apart, exposing the light skin underneath his natural armor, his own body creaking to sustain such a rapid intake of prey.

It had been a few minutes, but she realized the mass of lemmings that had previously pressed against both her sides was down to just three. So focused on feeling that massive round gut expand, she hadn't noticed he was almost finished. Looking up she realized he'd slowed down tremendously, taking multiple swallows where one used to do the job.

She watched him pack the last one away, his gut showing countless squirming shapes. She pressed in on it, the multitude of small prey giving way, allowing her to mold the round shape of his gut a fair bit before it fought back.

A belch shook the air, her action squeezing a significant amount of air out of his bloated belly. "Uggghh, please be careful!" Roy hung his head back over the couch, the cloudy white scales of his scar dull against their brighter, undamaged brethren.

Giggling, she stood, slightly lifting the belly that pressed against his legs his legs, before spotting a shape to her right. There was one more lemming! This one was smarter than the rest, gazing up at the predator that had just consumed his pack with terror in his eyes. Grinning, she dropped the draconic belly and snagged the distracted rodent by the scruff. It flailed, but its tiny limbs were nothing compared to the giants that it was surrounded by.

Roy looked back down as she stepped up onto the couch, curious but with the food coma in his eyes. He didn't realize what she was doing until it was too late, and she dropped to sit on his bloated tummy like one would drop into a beanbag chair. And it shaped itself in much the same way, to the displeasure of both the chair and it's stuffing. There was a small 'hurk' from the dragon, before another small, more pained burp. She smiled as more air was squeezed out of him, almost bringing a lemming back with it.

She placed a hand under his chin, raising his face to meet hers. "Now now, don't quit on me yet!" She raised the flailing bundle of fur and fear over his face, waving it in front of his eyes. "You've got to clean your plate!"

Amber eyes widened, before Roy shook his head. "We can just let this one go." A third belch between sentences, followed by a groan. "I think I'm at capacity, and your fat butt isn't helping."

Reni shook her head. "That's no good. My mother taught me to eat everything, it's rude to not eat what you take!" She knew she had a mischievous look on her face, and she wormed a finger in between his lips, trying to spread his strong jaws herself. "You're in no position to argue!" With an uncharacteristic whimper, Roy relented, opening his maw.

Hot, lemming tainted, dragon saliva air washed over her face, her tail swaying in excitement. She stopped for a moment, always happy to admire the way his jaw looked. Saliva strings connecting each end, a thick tongue that disappeared back into a cavernous throat, flexing with his breathing. Lucky rodent.

Slowly lowering the lemming, who had now begun to plead, she placed its legs onto his tongue. It tried to run, but could find no grip on that slick muscle. Lowering him further, she gasped when he gulped, always shocked at the action. The hips of the rodent disappeared, and still she didn't let go. A second swallow, and it was gone to the chest. Her hand still held on, as she was mesmerised by the closeup of the event. A third, and she jerked forward, as her arm was tugged forward, her hand disappearing alongside the head of the final prey.

Roy's body tensed underneath her, and two huge hands grabbed her tightly. One on her arm, one her waist, pushing her back with all his strength. She relented, releasing the rodent to his prison, her hand emerging from the dragon's gullet with a slick pop, followed by his coughing.

"How many times have I told you!" Roy said angrily, still holding her even as she watched the bulge the lemming made in his throat add to the one she was sitting on. "I don't want you playing with fire like that, I'm not going to realize what's happening one day!"

Reni shook herself out of her trance, freeing her arm from his grasp. "I trust you. Besides, it wouldn't be so bad. I get a little jealous of everything that goes down into that smelter of yours!"

Roy rolled his eyes. "It would be that bad, yes. Jealous of my prey or not, I won't make you one."

Giggling, she planted a kiss on his nose, before letting her weight fall forward onto his chest instead of down onto his gut. "Whatever you say.~" Wrapping her arms around his neck, she realized it was a good thing she'd gotten changed so early. Cuddling would be less comfortable in jeans.

Roy sighed. "Well, I think I'll pass out before I throw up. Small or not, if the leader manages to come back up I don't think I can stop the rest." He yawned, releasing her waist to hold her possessively, his other arm sprawling across the couch.

"Good night, Roy." Reni responded softly, but the only sounds she heard in response were the sounds of a dragon already asleep, and the gurgles of a stomach at work, trying to process more food than it was accustomed to.
