Mary's Name is Gloria

Part 1

Mary

"It's not that we want to." The male otter explained. "It's just that things--" His voice broke and he put a paw over his mouth to hide the shame.

"Things are so hard now." A female otter sitting next to the male finished for him. "He's been out of work for so long. The economy, it's just so..." She made a hopeless and empty gesture before smoothing back her platinum blond hair, the brown roots showing that it's been quite a while since she could afford a touch up. "...and my job simply doesn't pay enough. Last week they repossessed one of our cars. An eviction notice has been served, we're going to lose the house. Amy needs medicine and we just can't afford it anymore."

Across the desk from the two a male red fox wore a empathetic face complimented by a satin smooth three piece suit. He had heard this before. The same sad story attached to different faces. He prided himself on being able to meet his clients on an emotional level. To make them feel as comfortable as possible with the process. It isn't unusual for them to continue to justify themselves to him, even at this stage. He knew it was more for their own sake than his.

"I understand." The fox said. "Believe me, I do. Bad things happen to good people all the time. I know you wouldn't even be here if you hadn't tried everything else first." He opened the drawer on his desk and produced a document with a business check paper-clipped to it. "I have the final paperwork here, and a check for two-hundred and fifty thousand dollars, as we agreed upon." He glanced at the couple and was rewarded with a glint of hopeful greed as they spied the check. Still, no reason not to go through the motions.

The fox set the check aside and slid the document over to them. The male otter reached for it gingerly but the fox put his paw on the document. He gave them his most sincere face before saying. "This is the last part of our agreement. Despite all the work and signatures you have both made up until now this is the one that really matters. It is binding by law. Once you both have signed this you relinquish all rights. You can't change your mind or alter any part of the deal. I want you to read it and only sign once you understand it completely. If you have any misgivings whatsoever I urge you to walk out the door right now. There will be no ill will between us and I'll happily shred this document and the check." With that he released the document to them to make their decision. Though he knew what that decision would be. They had seen the check.

Everyone signs after seeing the check.

Mary sat alone in the waiting room. It was a strange room, reminding her of a doctor's office. There was a large fish tank that bubbled away with a number of brightly colored fish swimming in it. One of the fish was dead. It floated on the surface and did slow somersaults every once in a while when it happened to float under the filter. It's scales were a sickly white and occasionally another fish would take a nibble of it. There were toys in the room. Nice toys. Action figures, plastic trucks, dolls with bight colored dresses, building blocks, coloring books and crayons, magazines and novelettes that would appeal to young adults. Still, this wasn't her doctor's office. The toys there were always well used and old looking, these looked brand new. Not to mention this place didn't smell like the doctor's office. It smelled more like a bank.

The young otter had luggage with her. She wasn't sure why but her parents made her bring it. They said she would be taking a "trip". They didn't bring any, and that was odd. If they were going on a vacation maybe her parents already had it in the trunk of the car. That still didn't explain why she had to bring hers in and they didn't. Perhaps she would be going to visit grandma? It wasn't the only odd thing her parents did that day. When she woke up her parents told her there would be no school for her today, even though her brother and sister still had to go. Then they had a big family breakfast, almost like it had been her birthday. She was even allowed to eat that cereal she liked so much with the marshmallows in it, the same one her mother had forbid to even have in the house. As much fun as it had been she couldn't help but notice her parents kept looking like they might start to cry. She didn't understand why.

Mary was quickly getting bored, and despite the best efforts of the brightly colored toys, she wasn't very interested in them. Fortunately she had brought her own entertainment. She fished around in her backpack and found her pocket game system. A paw-me-down from her brother. It was an older system and she would have much preferred a smart phone with it's seemingly unlimited options, but this still had a few games she enjoyed. In a minute she was thoroughly engrossed in a game.

Eventually a door to the waiting room opened. Mary looked up expectantly but was disappointed to see a middle aged canine female instead of her parents. The canine was stunning looking. She had a voluptuous body that seemed to strain the buttons on her white coat. Her sleek golden fur was glossy and healthy. Her blond hair was pulled back tightly and sprouted into a bouquet of curls at the the pony tail. Even the long fur on her tail was meticulously groomed into bouncy little curls. On her nose a pair of black framed glasses buttressed the air of confidence the female had. There was a stethoscope hanging around her neck, suggesting that maybe she was a doctor. She was a pure bred golden Labrador, a rare thing among a species that tended to interbreed quite readily. That was not something that Mary was aware of. What she did know what the female was everything she fantasize herself as being when she grew up. Tall, curvy, and attractive. Not small and scrawny like she was. Mary was immediately intimidated by her.

The canine smiled warmly at her. "Are you Mary?" She asked.

Mary nodded.

"My name is Sandy." The Labrador told her. "Your parents are going to be a little bit longer and they asked me to keep you company. Is that okay?"

"I guess so." Mary agreed before getting back to the game. She brushed at her long dark hair and let it fall down around her face. It gave her a veil between her and the stranger and made her feel a little more comfortable.

Sandy sat down next to the young otter and crossed her legs. She set a clipboard on her lap, scribbling something on it before turning her attention to Mary.

"What game are you playing?"

"Creature Trappers Two." Mary told her.

"I've played that." Sandy told her. "What creatures have you captured?"

"I have a Green Chimera, a Boulder Hurler, and a Zoom Goblin." Mary said. "All of them gold level."

"Wow, that's really good." Sandy said sounding impressed. "I never liked Zoom Goblins because they were so hard to train."

"Yeah, you have to use the training rod on them all the time and spend a ton of money on obedience fruit," Mary agreed, "but eventually they become loyal and they're super strong against stone type creatures."

Sandy fished into her pocket and pulled out her smart phone. She poked at the screen and after a few seconds the familiar intro music of Creature Trappers chimed. Mary's little ears perked up.

"You have it on your phone?"

"I have Creature Trappers _Five_on my phone." Sandy said proudly, displaying the phone to her. Indeed, it did have the opening screen of the most recent release of the game on it. "Would you like to play it?"

"Sure!" Mary said excitedly, setting aside her own game and promptly forgetting about it.

"Okay, but you have to promise me two things first." The canine insisted before handing the phone over. "Don't sell any of my creatures, and you'll answer some questions I have for you. Deal?"

"Deal!" Mary quickly agreed before taking the phone. It was a really nice phone, very high end and very new. The cub made sure to handle it gently even though the canine didn't seem worried at all that she might damage it. The game itself was familiar, but had enough differences that she needed some help with it. Sandy was all too eager to show her the new features and options the game had and walked her through them. Despite the deal they made, she did let Mary sell one of her creatures to make room to capture a better one. For a while Sandy was satisfied to just let her play the game. They spent most of the time discussing strategy and the benefits and drawbacks different creatures had. Even so, Sandy occasionally scribbled comments on the clipboard.

Sandy brushed at Mary's hair, pulling out of her face on one side and tucking it behind her ear. "Oh, there really is a little girl under there." The canine teased. Mary gave a bashful look and tried to readjust her hair, but Sandy tutted at her not to. "It's a shame to hide a pretty face."

Mary's attention went back to the game, feeling a little flush from embarrassment. Besides, a battle had started and she didn't want to lose. She was using the Thunder Dragon, a super rare, legendary creature that Sandy had somehow acquired. She was curious how well it would perform. Sandy let her finish the battle without disturbing her.

"Pretty neat, huh?" Sandy said once it concluded.

"Yeah, he's really strong." Mary noted. "That battle was easy." She went back to the comforting tedium of the care and training screens, feeding the creatures and keeping them happy and loyal. Sandy took advantage of the lull in action to ask more pressing questions not related to the game.

"Can I talk to you about your family?" Sandy asked.

Mary shrugged. "Sure."

"You have an older brother, don't you?"

"John, yeah." Mary said.

"Tell me about him." Sandy implored. "What's he like?"

Mary shrugged again. "He's fourteen and he just started high school. He likes to play basketball."

"Do you love him?"

"Sure, I guess." Mary said, starting to feel a little uncomfortable with the questions. "He makes me angry sometimes, but, sure, I love my whole family."

"What kind of things does he do to make you angry?"

"I don't know, just things." She said, but Sandy appeared to want her to elaborate. "Um, like this one time during the winter he stuffed snow down the back of my shirt. It was really cold and some of it slipped down into my pants."

"Uh, huh..." Sandy said as she scribbled some more on the pad. Mary was hoping that was all the questions she had, but after a moment she continued. "Do you do things to make him angry?"

"No. Well, not on purpose."

"You accidentally make him angry?"

"One time I went into the bathroom without knocking," Mary told her, "but he was in there. I guess he was trying to pee but it wasn't coming out so he was pulling on it. He was so mad and he yelled at me. I was afraid he was going to hate me forever."

Sandy wrote a little more on the pad. "Did he hate you forever?"

"Of course not." She said.

"What about your sister?" Sandy inquired.

"Amy is autistic." She said. "She's really smart, but she doesn't talk much. She likes coloring books and she'll go through two or three of them every week. She won't share her crayons and sometimes she'll steal mine."

"She sounds kind of mean."

Mary shrugged. "Mom and Dad says she can't help it. Amy will scream if I try to take them back anyway. Grandma always brings more when she visits so it's not so bad."

The door to the lobby opened again. Again Mary was disappointed that it wasn't her parents, just the fox that they had gone in to talk with. The fox waved for Sandy to come.

"I'll be just a second, honey." She told Mary as she got up to speak with him.

"How did it go?" She asked him with a voice low enough that the young otter couldn't hear.

The fox gave her a thumbs-up. "They signed and took the check." He kept his own voice low too. "Everything is finalized and we have custody. Mr. and Mrs. Miller elected to take the back door out."

Sandy grinned. "Cowards."

"No skin off my snout." The fox said. "I'll fax the paperwork down to the courthouse and you can start getting her prepped. I'll be back out in a few and help you get her processed."

Sandy nodded and went back to sit with Mary. "Mr. Johnson said your parents are going to be a bit longer yet." Sandy told the cub. "So we have a little more time to talk."

"Okay."

"You must be getting hungry." The canine noted as she rooted through the deep pockets of her lab coat. "Would you like a piece of candy?" She produced an assortment of small chocolate bars.

Mary looked at the chocolate forlornly. "My mom won't let me have sweets this early in the day. She'd get mad."

"I won't say anything if you won't." Sandy said. "I have plain, crispy, and some with peanuts in it. Which one would you like?"

Mary was still hesitant to disobey her mother, but Sandy was an adult. If she said it was okay than it must be. The young otter picked the crispy chocolate. Unwrapping it quickly before popping it in her mouth. It tasted good, but there was a bitter undertone to the chocolate that lingered on her tongue.

"That's a good girl." Sandy told her as she took the wrapper away from the otter and stuffed it in her pocket. Mary went back to the game and Sandy returned to scribbling on her pad. Despite saying she wanted to talk more the retriever spent a few minutes filling out paperwork and letting the cub play the game unmolested.

"You said your grandma visits, what about your grandpa?" Sandy finally asked.

"My grandpa died when I was really little." Mary said. She blinked and squinted at the phone. The screen looked a little fuzzy and her eyes felt watery. Maybe her allergies were acting up.

"I'm sorry to hear that."

Mary shrugged. "It was a long time ago, I barely remember him."

"What about your parents?" Sandy continued. "What can you tell me about them."

"I donno, they're just my mom and dad." Mary told her. "My dad isn't working right now so he's at home a lot. My mom works at a diner downtown and sometimes we go up there to visit her at work and get something to eat." The young otter yawned. "We don't have a lot of food at home."

"It's been tough for your family, hasn't it?" Sandy asked.

"Yeah." Mary agreed. "But Dad says we have each other so we'll be okay."

"Family is a good thing, that's for sure." Sandy said with a touch of indifference in her voice.

"Yeah." Mary said again. She was finding it increasingly difficult to focus her eyes. Her paws suddenly felt far away and slow to react. The images on the screen moved around in ways they weren't supposed to. Sandy's voice also seemed to move away from her. She had asked something but Mary had missed it.

"What?"

"I asked have you had your first heat cycle yet?" The canine repeated.

The cub looked the older female. Her vision was doubled and the twin faces of two smiling retrievers swam in her vision. "No." She heard herself say.

The smart phone clattered to the floor. Mary looked down at her unresponsive paws. Was that what they were supposed to look like? All furry and weird with that webbing between the fingers? Such a strange thought. They were the same paws she always had and they looked the same but totally different. They felt so odd, like they didn't want to do what she told them to. Like they resented being a part of her.

"What's wrong with--" The otter muttered as her eyes fluttered and tried to roll back. She shook her head and somehow lost her balance while sitting in a chair. Sandy managed to grab her by the shoulders before she tumbled to the floor.

"Don't fight it." Sandy advised the cub as she opened the front of Mary's blouse. The Labrador put the stethoscope on and listened to the otter's heart, appearing satisfied with how it sounded. "Just sleep if you have to."

Mary didn't want to sleep. She wanted to leave. She wanted to go home. She felt that she should be scared, but she couldn't work up the energy to be so. The air felt heavy and thick in her lungs, like she was breathing a liquid. A dull and euphoric heat danced up and down her body. The light was too bright and tried to force her eyes closed. She resisted the urge, knowing that if she gave in she would surely fall asleep.

The fox appeared again. What was his name? Mr. Jameston? Mr. Johnny? Something like that.

"How's our girl doing?" He asked as he set down a bag and squatted down in front of Mary. The fox took hold of her face. He examined her, turning her head and prying open her mouth to look at her teeth. Mary tried to push him away but only succeeded in batting at him feebly.

"There's no palpitations and her heart rhythm is good." Sandy informed him. "It took nine and a half minutes to start showing outward signs of intoxication, so her liver is strong. So far the files from her pediatrician look legit."

The fox rubbed his paws on Mary's face, feeling the structure of her skull. "I was a little worried about that when the parents agreed to sell at two-fifty. Given the medical history of their other two children her file seemed too good to be true. Aside from some minor allergies she doesn't seem to have any issues." He pressed at her cheekbones. "She's got excellent bone structure, she's going to be very pretty. I'd have happily given them three-fifty easy for her. Maybe even four."

Legally they were barred from interacting physically with Mary before the paperwork was completed, now that she was in the custody of the corporation they could finally make an accurate assessment of the merchandise. The fox slipped off her blouse and ran his paws over her body, looking for imperfections and flaws.

"Some don't know how to deal." Sandy said, holding onto Mary as she tried to struggle against the strange male that was feeling her up.

"Yeah." The fox agreed. "A professional negotiator might have gotten a half mil out of me." He ran his thumbs over the otter's nipples. "And we still would have done well with her. No major scars, no piercings, everything is very symmetrical. Let's check under the hood."

Mr. Johnson motioned for Sandy to pick the cub up. The retriever lifted the limp otter into her lap and the fox lifted the cub's skirt. He pulled her shoes off and peeled down her stockings and panties together in a bunch. Mary whimpered and put her paws over her exposed crotch as Sandy held the cub's legs open for the male to examine.

"No." Mary said weakly as the fox pulled her paws away and produced a small flashlight from the bag on the floor.

"You're right, she's got a hell of a liver." The fox said. "She should be sleeping right now. Take her paws, she keeps fighting me."

Sandy managed to pull the cubs legs up and pinch Mary's wrists together to keep her still. The fox stuck the flashlight in his mouth and put his paws on the cub's rump, pressing his thumbs gently on either side of her vagina to pry open her labia. He moved his head around to adjust the light.

"Jackpot!" He muttered around the flashlight before pulling it from his mouth. "Visible and intact hymen. Take a picture of this and you got a one point five starting bid."

"Are you serious?" Sandy asked excitedly.

"Yep. She's a big fish." The fox confirmed. "We'll put her on the high end block for a mistress program and you and I can both get matching convertibles. What's her name again?"

"Mary." Sandy answered, her head swimming with what she could do with a commission of that size.

Mr. Johnson grunted in disgust. "That's a terrible name." He said fishing in the bag again. "Doesn't sell well at all. Write her up as Gloria."

Out of the bag he pulled an adjustable collar made from a hard pink material with several flashing lights on it. He fitted it around the cub's neck snugly, but not too snugly. It made a loud beep to indicate it's activation. The door opened and a pair of orderlies came in with a gurney.

"About fucking time, guys." The fox said as he scooped up the cub and laid her on the gurney. He pulled off her skirt and tossed it onto the floor with the rest of her clothes and luggage, leaving the little otter completely naked except for her new collar. The orderlies moved to take the stretcher.

"Ah, ah! No!" Mr. Johnson shooed them away. "Sandy, you take her back." The last thing he needed was one of the orderlies to get exploratory on his newest purchase. Normally he wouldn't care, most that come through here have a history of abuse, but in this case an errant finger might cost him thousands of dollars in commission.

Sandy nodded and took charge of the cub, pushing her into the back to have the doctors do a more thorough examination. One that she would be watching over very carefully.

The fox turned to the orderlies. "Pick this shit up." He pointed to Mary's belongings. "Take it out back and throw it in the dumpster."

The orderlies were quite put out by his treatment of them and gathered the luggage roughly. One of her bags fell open and the contents fell out. The male grumbled and he stooped over to pick up the clothes and video game components to stuff them back in. One of the items that fell out was a photograph. A smiling mother and father with three cubs. It looked like a happy family. He didn't think much of it as he stuck it back into the bag.
