#1 of Sam's story

Spikey Pete gave me the idea for this story I'm just going to flesh it out a bit. The protagonist is an eighteen year old female wolf. Her coat is pitch black, and her eyes are bright yellow.

The First Night

The young wolf was walking through a dark ally. She sniffed the air tentatively and took a step closer to a large dumpster. Sniffing again her tail began to wag as she leaned over the edge and found what she was looking for. A big red bucket of fried chicken, it had been anyway. It was now crumpled and mostly empty but there was still one piece left that was untouched.

Her heart skipped a beat in excitement as she grabbed it and felt that it was still warm. She took a moment to enjoy the smell and reflect on how long it had been since she had a hot meal. "Tonight must be my lucky night." She thought aloud before taking a small bite. She savored the flavor, chewing slowly. She sighed happily before taking another bite.

After finishing her small meal she continued walking through the ally glancing into the many dumpsters and trash bins as she gnawed on the bone. She tossed it aside as she walked up to a fence. "Now I know its my lucky day." She grabbed a thick blanket that had been hanging over the fence. She sniffed at it first making sure it hadn't been soiled.

She glanced around making sure no one had seen her and ran off toward her home. She looked around again as she walked up to a chain link fence bordering a small wooded area. She set her new blanket on the fence and hopped over grabbing it as she fell. After walking a short distance she came to a small clearing.

There was a small pit in the middle filled with the ashes of many fires. Close to that and to the left a bit were two wooden pallets with a grass mat spread over them for padding. Over that was her most prized possession, an old tarp she had managed to find on the side of the freeway. It was hanging over her makeshift bed to keep the rain off her.

She carefully set her blanket on the bed and walked off into the woods. She returned a few minutes later with an armload of sticks perfect for a fire. She gathered some dead leaves and grass arranging them perfectly in her small fire pit. Next she walked over to a nearby try and stuck her hand into a well concealed opening. She pulled out a slightly rusted lighter and cradled it against her chest protectively as she walked back over to fire.

She lit the fire quickly and returned the lighter to it hiding place. Walking over to her bed and pulling her new blanket over her she enjoyed the warmth of the fire near her cold feat. She drifted off to sleep and was soon dreaming of happier times not so long ago.

A man in a blue suit stood over the sleeping wolf as the sun began to rise. He walked out of the woods to his black BMW. Pulling out his cell he punched a few buttons and held it his ear.

"Hey it me.....yeah I already looked it over......the site is perfect but there is one small issue........A stray....no she's an anthro.....still sleeping.....okay I'll wait here for them." He hung up the phone and sat down in his car turning on the radio. He was woke up with a start as somebody knocked on his window.

He got out and introduced himself to the man. He was wearing something like a swat uniform and held a small pistol. His partner was already at the entrance to the woods scanning them for any movement. The man in the suit led them to the edge of her clearing and walked back to his car leaving quickly.

One of the men crept through the woods to the other side of the clearing. While the other one stayed in place.

"Ach hmmm.....miss we need you to come with us."

She rubbed her eyes groggily looking around for whoever had interrupted her wonderful dreams. As soon as she saw the man in the uniform her eyes shot open and her heart jumped. She turned to run but was blocked by the second man.

"Why are you here?"

"We are going to take you someplace safe. A place with plenty of food, a warm bed and maybe even some new friends for you."

"Please don't take me there! I heard about the pound you humans started. You take anthro's there and lock up. Ill leave right now I wont cause any trouble just please let me go." She started to panic as the men took a step closer and unlatched their holsters.

"Its not like that just come with us so you can be safe."

She turned and started running away from the men. She a quiet puff followed by a sharp pain in her neck before she fell to the ground. Her vision started fading as the sedatives in the dart took effect.

"W...why?" Her eyelids fell closed and her head rolled to the side.

"Well that wasn't so bad. Remember that lioness Rick brought in?"

"Oh don't remind me, that bitch took his partners arm off before the sedatives kicked in."

"He doin' okay?"

"Yeah I heard they reattached it and he has full function."

"Damn shame he deserved it."

They continued to chat as they grabbed the wolf and hauled her back to their van taking her down to the processing center. They dropped her off and went to respond to another call.

She woke up a few hours later on small bed in a cell. It wasn't like a prison cell. It had bars on three sides, the front had the door on it and the other two were facing other cells. "what the hell happened."

"You got caught." a soft voice answered her.

She looked over at the other occupant of the small cell with surprise. She had thought she was alone. The other person was a female husky. The stranger held out her paw and introduced herself as Alex.

"Well I've been alone for so long I don't really have a name." A tear dripped from her eye as she thought of all the nights she had spent alone in the cold.

"Hey its okay we just have to give you one." She stared off into space for a moment before snapping her finger and exclaiming. "I've got it! SAM! Is that okay with you.

"Well how about Samantha?"

"That's great! You mind if I still call you Sam?"

"Yeah that would be great." a smile spread across her muzzle as she realized she had just made her first friend.

"So how did you get caught?"

"Some strange men woke me up and shot me when I tried to run. How bout you?"

"Well...they um...caught me with my pants down. Figuratively speaking......I had been stuck out in the rain in a strange nationhood when a nice human offered to let me stay with him until the rain stopped. After I fell asleep on his couch they showed up and hauled me off."

A man walked into the small room and said "Lights out ladies." before flipping the switch and encasing the room in darkness.

"Well I guess we should get some rest."

They laid down on their separate beds and sat in silence, Alex was soon snoring softly but Sam laid there for quite awhile thinking about her new situation and her new friend. "Maybe this wont be so bad, I mean hey I even got a name." she thought as her eyelids finally slid shut.
