Happy Valentine's Day everyone. To celebrate the occasion, I've worked a short Valentine's story, as a tribute that harkens back to the classic Looney Tunes shorts. Pepe Le Pew has always been favorite character mind, and the short Really Scent served as inspiration for this short story. Plus, I wanted to see if I was capable of writing some similar to the Looney Tunes shorts.

Scent Is In The Air

By Natsuru

Paris, France; the city of love. And even more so now, considering it was Saint Valentine's Day in the city of romance. Love was certainly in the air, as all of the residents were head over heels for their significant others. Even the animals were madly in love. Yes, everyone was happily celebrating the holiday all day together, all except for one person. A sad, black cat by the name of Penelope Pussycat.

As she was walking all by her lonesome, she let out a sigh of grief. She had no one to love and spend the day with. The poor thing could just feel her heart about to shatter, as she felt herself getting ready to weep. But then, she noticed a male cat; waving at her to come over to him. Her heart bursted out through her chest, as hearts appeared in her eyes. She was happy; she found her significant other. And so, she ran over to him, but then it turned out that this moment was too good to be true. For as soon as Penelope had gotten closer to the feline, he was immediately embraced by his actual significant other. Penelope gasped in shock and soon she was saddened again, and she proceeded to walk off.

*********

Heartbroken, Penelope was walking slowly through the streets of Paris; sighing to herself. As she began to raise her head upwards, her eyes spotted what looked to be a buff, male cat; just sitting by himself. Once again, her heart bursted out through her chest. Hearts in her eyes once more. Penelope rushed over to the cat and immediately wrapped her arms around him; hugging him affectionately. But then she heard what sounded like growling. Following the noise, her eyes locked with the cat she was hugging. Turns out, the cat wasn't really a cat after all, but was actually a dog, and he wasn't happy about having a feline clinging onto him.

Realizing her mistake, Penelope let out a meow-like scream, and ran off; the dog giving chase. Running as fast as she could, Penelope looked back to see if the dog was still pursuing her, and he was. Eventually, Penelope came upon a gated fence, and she quickly squirmed herself under through it. The dog, however, wasn't so lucky, as he just ran face first into the fence; his body becoming a flat square with fence marks on him. Penelope had successfully escaped the vicious canine.

*********

Just as before, Penelope was walking alone in sadness; never to find a true love of her very own. And then, just like before, she was greeted by another male cat waving at her. She checked her surroundings to see if he was actually calling for someone else, and as she didn't see anyone else, she pointed at herself. The male cat nodded his head and moved his hands in beckoning motions for the female feline to come over. Not going to let this chance slip through her paws, Penelope rushed over to him, and the two were locked in an embrace.

The two cats were happy to be within one another's presence, as they continued to hug each other lovingly. Penelope was especially happy; she had finally found love at last. After gazing into each other's eyes, the two's faces were slowly inching closer, as they were about to share a kiss. However, the kiss they were soon to share had come to a quick end, as the male cat felt a tapping on his shoulder. Turning his head around, the male cat's eyes widened in fear, as he saw another female cat. Turns out, she was actually his girlfriend, and he was being a two timer. As such, she gave the male cat two hard slaps across his face.

As for Penelope, the female cat had gotten her free from her two timing boyfriend's paws, and lifted her up. With the strength she mustered, the feline threw Penelope far away from them. The black cat was sent flying, until she eventually made contact with a wall. Penelope's back and tail hit the wall, and she was stuck to it for only a few seconds. She fell onto her stomach, back on the ground, but she looked different from her backside now. Turns out the wall she was thrown onto was covered in wet, white paint, and now her back and tail had a long, white line of it on her. Today was certainly not Penelope's day. Such bad luck had saddened the feline again; now tears were actually streaming from her eyes. Upon getting herself back onto her feet, she proceeded to walk off to a place where she could be alone and cry in peace.

Elsewhere, there was a very nasty odor moving through the air within a park. As the smell had passed by some trees and plants, they immediately wilted and died in reaction. The odor then passed by a fountain with a statue standing in the center of it. Because of the stench, the statue's face gave a look of disgust, before immediately crumbling into dust. The fountain itself even broke into pieces, with the water from it evaporating soon after. For such an odor to be capable to cause such devastation, meant that it wasn't any ordinary bad smell. And that was certainly the case, as the smell itself was coming from the tail of a male skunk; Pepe Le Pew.

Pepe was just happily walking through the park; minding his own business, and completely unaware that his smell was being destructive. He eventually came upon some humans who were enjoying Valentine's day, but their day was soon ruined, due to the skunk's arrival. The odor from the mammal's tail alarmed the humans; their eyes widened, the many hairs on them falling off, and on some occasion, their colors from their bodies and clothes melted right off from them.

"LE SKUNK", a man shouted.

"THE SKUNK LE PEW", shouted another man.

"ZE TERRIBLE STINKY SMELL", shouted a woman.

Every human who was spending the day in the park, were now running out screaming. Despite that, Pepe wasn't at all fazed by the human's running off and screaming, but their actions did leave him confused. "Hmm...I wonder why everybody is running and screaming", he questioned. "Today is so...magnifique; what could possibly be causing them such strife?"

Focusing his attention to what was in front of him, Pepe came to a complete stop in his tracks, as he spotted someone. Further ahead of him - sitting on a log - the skunk eyed another skunk. In truth, the "skunk" in question was actually Penelope. Hearts appeared in Pepe's eyes, which then came shooting out; going from big hearts, down to small hearts. "Ooo la la", the skunk said as he closed his hands together; "Le love of my life; waiting for me to show up."

With no hesitation, Pepe proceeded to run over to the feline; his arms stretched outwards. As he was getting himself closer to Penelope, the skunk's running speed started to slow down. The smile on his face had even changed to a sad expression. Bringing a hand over to one of his ears, Pepe could hear the faint sounds of crying. The direction he had his ear pointing, was in the same direction as where Penelope was currently sitting. The feline had her paws covering her face, as she cried her eyes out. Hearing that sorrowful weeping, hit Pepe hard in his chest, as he felt bad for her.

"What is this? Le female skunk is in melancholy", Pepe pointed out the obvious. The expression on his face had changed to that of a more serious look. "As her future lover, it is my responsibility to find out what is troubling her, and help her out."

Instead of running, Pepe walked himself over to Penelope. Once up close to her, he tapped her a few times on her shoulder. "Excuse me, mademoiselle..." Feeling a tapping on her shoulder, and hearing the voice of someone, made Penelope cease her weeping. Moving her paws away from her face, the feline turned her head and faced the skunk. "...I am Pepe Le Pew, and I couldn't help, but see you crying here alone, and I've come to ask; what makes you so sad?"

Upon seeing the skunk, a gasp escaped from Penelope's mouth. Staring at the skunk from head to toe, Pepe appeared to be a hunk in the feline's eyes. With hearts appearing in her eyes once again, Penelope let out a squeal, as she immediately wrapped her arms around Pepe. Confused at first, the skunk didn't hesitate to wrap his own arms around the feline.

"I see you are no longer feeling so melancholy", Pepe said. "Now that we are together, we can make ze sweet music together."

With love finally found between them, the two were about ready to share a passionate kiss, as hearts circled around them. However, bad luck had reared its ugly head, yet again. The nasty odor that emitted from Pepe's tail had brought itself faceside, and entered the nostrils of Penelope. The feline's eye's instantly shot opened, and tears of disgust, rather than sorrow came dripping out. The hearts that surrounded her and Pepe had even melted away due to the skunk's odor. She gathered some strength into herself, and managed to push herself free from Pepe's grasp. Penelope further stepped herself away a few more inches from the skunk; her finger and thumb placed tightly upon her nose.

Pepe - unaware that Penelope had freed herself from his embrace - was left standing in place; hugging nothing, but the air itself. When his lips hadn't made contact with Penelope's, was when Pepe realized that he was holding onto nothing. Facing forward, he saw that Penelope was a great distance away from him. "Huh", was the only response he uttered. The skunk took some steps towards the cat, only for Penelope to take some more steps back herself. Pepe held a quizzical expression on his face, and he proceeded to take some steps forward towards the cat, only for Penelope to back herself away from him again.

"I am confused", Pepe said. "Pourquoi are you keeping your distance from moi?"

With a finger, Penelope pointed it at the skunk; repeatedly jabbing it at him. Seeing what she was doing, it didn't take Pepe long to get the hint, as he pointed a finger of his own at himself. "Moi? Are you saying that I am the problem for why you are staying away from me?" Penelope nodded her head at the skunk, as confirmation of his question. "I see...so then; what is wrong with me?"

From out of nowhere, Penelope pulled out a sign that she just so happened to have on her person. Seeing the large sign that had some words written on it, Pepe read it out loud. "You smell...I smell?" The feline nodded her head again, as she brought another sign, and once again the skunk read it. "Really bad!"

With the realization that he was the cause of why he and Penelope couldn't be together, really hurt him. His ears lowered as his expression had changed to that of sadness. But Pepe wasn't going to let himself be deterred; his expression changing to that of a serious one yet again. "My darling, you and I are fated to be together, and for you, I will be rid of my odor." He then leaped himself over to the feline's side, and took hold of one of her hands; petting it gently. "We shall get through this together, and be together. Would you like that, mon cherie?"

With her other hand still being used to close her nostrils, Penelope nodded her head in agreement with Pepe's words. Seeing that brought a gentle smile back to the skunk's face. "So, my darling; where shall we begin?" Answering his question, the feline immediately grabbed Pepe and brought him over to the riverbed; where she then threw him into. Bringing out a bar of soap from nowhere, the feline proceeded to furiously scrub the skunk down. Suds were forming and bubbles were flying in the air. Minutes went by and soon Penelope ceased her scrubbing of Pepe; smelling him afterwards. To her dismay, the odor from the skunk didn't go away, as the smell got reacquainted with her nose; quickly dropping him.

"I take it that ze scrubbing was a failure; oui?"

*********

"AAAAHHHH!"

"ARGGGG!"

"EEEKKK!"

At a perfume department, people were evacuating the store; screaming in horror. Within the store were both Pepe and Penelope. The feline was busy mixing many different perfumes together, while the skunk just stood in place; watching in amazement. "Ah mademoiselle; you are certainly a hard worker", Pepe complimented. "I like that in a woman, such as yourself." Just after he'd said that, Penelope was done creating the ultimate perfume concoction. The contents being contained within a very large bottle, of which she brought over and aimed at the skunk. Mustering up some strength within her, the feline jumped herself onto the atomizer; converting the liquid into mist that sprayed out onto Pepe.

A large smile formed onto Penelope's face, as she was overcome with joy to see the skunk covered in the perfume's mist. However, the perfume's mist and Pepe's odor seemed to have fallen in love with one another. The two smells shared a quick kiss and combined together to create an even stinkier smell. Both Pepe and Penelope had a whiff of the new odor, and their eyes had enlarged, as they both fainted. The smell even made every glass bottle within the store shatter into many pieces; even all of the windows broke, as the smell was escaping out from the department. Pepe and Penelope had awoken and rushed themselves out from the building.

*********

Now with a nose plug on her nose, Penelope was walking further ahead of Pepe. The skunk in question was following right behind her from five feet away. "I must apologize, my darling; my smell is a part of me", Pepe said; "It is an unfortunate curse." Penelope let out a sigh of sadness, as she walked past a restaurant. And coming out from said restaurant was a man; carrying a large pot of what appeared to be tomato juice. By the moment that Pepe had gotten near the human, the skunk's odor had entered the man's nose. Just like everyone before him, the man's eyes grew wide and broke through his glasses, and his mustache had fallen off from his face.

"AAAAAHHHHH!" The man tossed the large pot of tomato juice into the air, as he ran away screaming. And just as Pepe had walked close to that exact same spot the man stood at, the large pot had come back down upon him. The skunk's body was drenched in tomato juice. With a gasp coming from her mouth, Penelope turned herself around and ran over to the skunk's aid. She then helped him take the large pot off from him.

"Well, that was certainly an unexpected turn of events", Pepe said.

For whatever reason, Penelope removed the nose plug from her nose, and started sniffing. To her surprise, there was no bad smell coming from the skunk; it was completely gone. With Pepe now completely free of his terrible odor, Penelope didn't hold herself back from hugging the skunk, and giving him plenty of kisses. She even briefly stopped to lick her lips, due to the fact that she was tasting tomato from the skunk. As for Pepe himself, the fact that the feline was happily kissing him, brought a smile to his face. "Well, what do you know; that theory about a tomato bath is true."

Just like Penelope, Pepe didn't hold himself back either, as he wrapped his arms around the feline's body. Both him and Penelope stared at one another with bedroom eyes. "And now, my darling; we can finally be together in peace." Penelope nodded her head in agreement with those words of his, as they brought their faces closer. Their mouths locked together and the two were now sharing a passionate, love filled kiss; hearts flying out from around them.

*********

Moments later, Pepe and Penelope were sharing a log together; sitting on it as they held onto each other. They were watching the sun setting in the distance of the twilight hour. The trees on each side of them had formed a large heart around the two. Once again, the cat and skunk shared another passionate kiss, as they were happy to have found true love, because they found each other. Love truly was in the air of Paris, France.

END!
