Unexpected Break-In

...

Unexpected Break-In

The trees whizzed passed his dark body as he dashed through the forest. The downpour had only worsened as he got closer to the town.

"It's getting worse. I need to hurry..." he panted as his paws carried him through the mud and foliage.

The young umbreon knew that this idea might have been in vain but it was all he had left to try. Lightning lit up the sky as the crack of thunder shook the trees and earth around him. The metal linked fence that kept wild pokemon out of the city limits and the pokemon center came into view as he approached. Stopping right at the base he started digging into the soft soggy earth. His paws worked fast, soil caking onto his fur as it splashed from the force of his digging. The whole got bigger as the seconds went by but he had to make it big enough for a swift escape...if he was even able to.

"Lets see if this is big enough.." muttering to himself as he squeezed underneath the fence easily. Looking left and right down the alley he saw nothing. Quickly looking back where he came from he muttered to himself.

"Hang in there...mom."

He looked up at the red roof of the building to make sure it was the right place to enter, noticing the grate of the vent system of the building, it was the only option for him to get in without being detected. He approached the metal vent testing how well placed it was with a paw, it didn't budge but was somewhat loose. With a quick sinister swipe of his claws the piece of metal fell off with a clang, the noise making him tense, not sure if anyone or anything heard it.

He crawled into the dark tunnel silently approaching an intersection. His rings glowed to light the way, the unique red glow preventing him from identifying color but allowed him to see none the less. Then with a sigh he was going to turn right, before hearing a faint voice that made his body freeze in place...

"..that way..." the brief whisper echoed against his ear.

The fur on his back stood on end when he heard it. Circling himself to check if someone was around he gave a small yelp "W-who is there?", silence remained present with no answer. Keeping his focus he hesitantly crawled in to where the voice had pointed him. If it wasn't the flow of air against his soaked fur that gave him chills, it certainly was something else.

As he moved through the vent system he came to another intersection, to the right there was another grate with light pouring through the holes. He looked through, there was a small room for special treatments, containing a trainer, a nurse, and on a bed was a ninetales. He could hear them exchanging words.

"I'm sorry, but as much as I want to give the treatment I can't do it unless you have the money, the supply for it is very expensive to keep in stock, its the only one we charge money for..." the nurse obviously didn't want to say that, regretting her own words.

"But if she doesn't have that, she could..she could.." the young man's voice cracked sounding a bit desperate and saddened by the news.

"I'm really sorry, I can find something to null the pain so she is comfortable..?" The young man turned away back to the nurse. "Just leave for now...let me be alone." She nodded, looking down as she exited the room, door closing behind her.

He sighed turning away from the grate, "Wish I could do something...but, I have my own person to save.." he thought as he continued his original path down the vents. He came across another intersection with a room attached only this time the room was dark and empty. Peeking through the holes, the shelves and windowed cabinets full of drugs, potions, and vaccines showed it was the stock room. With a grunt he pushed against the grate, it didn't budge.

"So it's going to be like that huh?" thinking a moment if he were to tackle it..."..it would just fly and break something.." He growled, not wanting to get so far and give up. The tempature suddenly dropped, his own breath could be seen. Squeaking on the other side of the grate echoed through the vent and empty room. With a clang the grating fell to the floor along with the screws that held it. A shiver crept up his spine at what just played before him. "Wh-what..?" Shaking the jitters off, there was no time, he needed to hurry before he had actual company pay him a visit.

"Where to start..." he looked around then saw a little bag that was meant for a pokemon to wear for delivering products. A smile crept onto his muzzle for it seemed Arceus was on his side today. "Must be my lucky day."

Dragging the bag to the cabinets he put it next to him, he nudged the cabinet door open and looked in it to see assortments of drugs, medicine, syringes, and vials. His fur started to bristle again as the same voice from earlier whispered in his head.

"Take those two syringes..."

It hummed in his mind when his eyes glazed over one with a blue fluid and the other with red fluid.

He didn't know who or what was talking to him but he was going to have to trust this voice since it did help him sort of get here. He grabbed the syringes with jaws, gently placing them in the bag. He squirmed into the loop that would hang on his neck and back. Footsteps outside teh door made his ear twitch. It sounded like someone was coming to the room! He quickly padded to the open vent and crawled inside right as the lights came on. He heard a shout as the light blinded him from being used to the dark. As his vision cleared up the shouting disappeared and was gone but what made him even more shocked was that his environment had changed drastically.

Everything he saw became bright blue, and the vents were frigid and covered in ice. Even his damp fur was covered in a layer of frost. The metal stuck to his paws yet he wasn't immobile, the smell of decay and heavy stench of blood suddenly reaked the small space. Everything...became so foreboding. He moved forward quickly, not wanting to stay any longer. As he moved forward he the scent of death only thickened causing him to cough and gag. There was a loud bang and crackling...something was crawling. It grew louder, then a thump. Farther into the vent near where he saw the ninetales and her trainer layed a mass, from the looks it was a terrifying sight. The fur was matted, and the body was disfigured unnaturally.

"What the..". his eyes were wide, it looked like a dead pokemon. He froze in fear as it started to move on its own, bones bent and twisted, yet it moved so fast. It plowed through him the smell unbearable as it flowed but clearly through like a ghost then turned toward the room where the trainer and his pokemon were.

"Oh no..." he breathed as he heard the grate burst. Scrambling to where it is he was hoping whatever that was isn't going to hurt them.

He bursted through the opened grate hoping to stop the creature from attacking the trainer and his ninetales. As light clashed with his eyes again the vision disappeared as he now looked at a growling vixen and a surprised trainer.

"What..?" was all that could process through his mind.

"Whoah...a shiny umbreon!" the human said with some excitement. His excitement didn't last for long until he moved in front of the ninetales as if to protect her.

The umbreon just stood there frozen with shock, shivering from the sub-zero tempature he experienced seconds ago. He blinked coming back to reality. Not sure what to do. His shivering caused him to drop the bag, vials spilling to the floor with a soft clang. He took the red syringe in his mouth as he cautiously retreated from the human with his ears back against his head.

"W-what..is that?" the human crouched low to get a better look at the bluesyringe and his eyes widened. "That's! The treatment syringe that I need for..." He picked it up then glanced over at his ninetales with some hope in his eyes.

The Umbreon cautiously watched him take it then inject it into the ninetales lower back. She whined in pain before slowly fading into a slumber from the anesthetic in the fluid. The human whispered silently to comfort the vixen as he pet her mane. The umbreon sighed turning to the vent, shivering at what happened in there moments ago, shaking his head he slipped through the bag's strap quickly leaving the room with the one vial he possessed in his muzzle.

The human turned to thank the umbreon but saw he was already long gone. "Thank you...friend." he pondered if maybe he could find him later for a proper thank you, but his train of though broke when the nurse returned to see him with the needle and mudprints exiting the vent. "Was that your Umbreon!?" she demanded. He remained calm and handed her the empty syringe. "No, he broke in from the wild." She searched his expression not finding anything faltering in his words then quickly rushed out.

He crawled directly to the intersection to the outside. Approaching the same hole under the fence and squirmed through. A little trouble came up for the bag was caught on the fence. He groaned as he slipped out of the loop and opened the bag and picked up the syringe and dashed off to his mother's den. Minutes flew by as he ran, it had stopped raining on his way back. When he reached the den his mother was just as she was when he left but more restless.

"I'm back." He panted as he approached her, with some hope that this may work. Lowering his head and placing his hear against her side he heard her heart beat and slow breathing, she groaned in her sleep at his touch and possibly from a dream she was experiencing. Smiling that she seemed fine he moved back still wondering how he was going to use the syringe. He sat there thinking then remembered what the human did to his ninetales with the other syringe.

"That's right...I see now." Picking up the needle very carefully.

He approached her lower back. Twisting his head so the needle was pointing to her body he jabbed her with the needle as softly and firmly as possible, then using a paw he pushed the pressure handle of the syringe to inject the fluid just how the human did it. Wincing as his mother whimpered from the pain. After it was finished he removed the object and tossed it away so it was out of the way. He watched his mother with worry hoping it would work. Deciding it would be best to get some sleep to pass the time.

He curled up next to her body, resting his head on his paws. "Night, mom..." with that the sound of the night disappeared.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"You really want to possess his body?"
"Yes, if it is the only way to watch over them both while I'm there, then that's what I want."
'Who are these voices? Why are they in my head? What are they saying?'
"I see, very well then. Bring him to the lake at midnight, it's a full moon and out in the open. We will be able to sync your minds and spirits together there."
"Okay.."
'What's going on!?'
Everything began to melt away as the air began to sky rocket to searing hot tempatures. Fire was everywhere, disintegrating everything in its path. The black flames surrounded him, very different from the embers in this environment. He took a step forward but halted when this creature manifested out of the black wall of heat. Staring the creature down he snarled "Who are you?!" It growled, grinning wickedly as it circled him, ignoring the question. "I know you understand what I said. ANSWER ME!" He charged up a shadow ball, sending it sailing at his target, but only went through it.
'What? Is this thing...a ghost?'
The creature snarled menacingly. It's maroon eyes flashed when black tendrils crept out of the ground. He looked down at the dark appendages, watching them tie his legs to where he stood. He grunted as he tried to pull his legs free. "What! I can't move!" Confusion spread on his face as a chill flowed through him, like being watched from behind. The creature in front of him crouched low then within a second launched at him though from the angle it was attacking something else. Its fangs now visible as its jaws opened ready to latch on....
He screamed in pain, the the icy cold grips of the tendrils started draining his energy, slowly blacking out..
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

He jumped up to his paws breathing heavily as sweat beaded on his forehead. He felt icy cold to the core yet burning on the surface. Realizing it was just a nightmare he calmed himself down. He looked to where his mother was and smiled with some relief, seeing her paw prints leading outside the den, his mother had recovered. His ears twitched at the sound of his mother's voice, and another's females voice. He stretched, groaning from the popping noises in his joints and spine, shaking the tension in his body out.

"Oh he did? Then that must mean..." his mother trailed off as she heard her son coming from the den. "Ardent, good morning. Your friend was telling me of your break in with the hospital! Did you really go in there on you own!?" She scurried over nuzzling him and checking him over for any injuries.

He sighed rolling his eyes as she looked him over "I'm fine mom..." he looked to see who the visitor could be, then stiffened at the sight of the familiar vixen "...You!? What are you doing here!?" his eyes widened with surprise. The ninetales giggled at his reaction, arching a brow "I tracked you from the fence behind the pokemon center. The bag you were carrying was hooked on the fence and your scent from there on led me here."

He frowned at her statement still a little paranoid. "I see...where is your trainer?" He asked looking around for any sign of his presence. "At the market. He lets me wander around freely." she replied courtly. "I came here to thank you. For helping me last night." He blinked, that dream still lingering in his mind. A nudge from his mother broke his daze, causing him to reply. "Oh...it was no trouble at all." 'Although it wasn't me who was planning it...' he thought to himself.

"Well why don't we introduce ourselves, I invited this young lady to lunch you know. I'm Claire, and this is Ardent, my son." Claire replied, beaming at her son. "You don't have to be so formal about it mom, I could have told her myself." He looked away chuckling, slightly embarrassed. "Well those are nice names, my name is Nina." Nina smiled, her tails swaying back and forth with interest in the dark type. Ardent rolled his eyes, standing up, "Well...I'll be at the lake, if you need me for lunch, I'll be there." he said and started walking off into the forest.

"Hmm...don't mind him, I think he likes you." Claire blurted out with a giggle. "W-what? I don't think so...he totally just walked off like he wanted to be alone." Nina blinked a bit. "Nonsense, I know my son. He is always like that, just a shy one. Give him some time and he'll open up." she sighed "Your offer about him going with you and your trainer...I'm okay with it, though we'd have to talk to Ardent about it first. I could use some exercise anyway." Nina smiled at the answer with some hope for her trainer. "I'm glad to hear that. So, lunch at the lake?" Claire nodded with a giggle "Took the words from my mouth." they both followed the same path Ardent had.

Ardent walked deep in thought, 'What was that in my dream? Is it the one who possesses my mind? If so, was it talking to me when I broke into the pokemon center?' The questions kept rising as he thought about his dream. He came to a clearing showing the vast lake shore. He walked to the water dipping his head down lapping up the water. As he was drinking his ear twitched at the sound of a snapped twig. He lifted his head and turned around to see the two show up. "Oh...hey, it's you two. I see you followed me."

The two fems held in their maws a giant leaf basket of berries. "Mhm now come help us with this please?" Claire asked muffled. "Yes mom." with a chuckle he hurried over and helped carry it to a spot for them to feast. "Thank you, Ardent." Nina smiles appreciatively at the umbreon. "No problem." he simply said pawing at certain berries that he favored then leaving the entire pile to the rest of them.

Nina just helped herself to as much as she wanted keeping an eye on Ardent. He noticed her staring and glanced at her without turning his head. He stopped eating and looked at her "Is there something wrong?". Nina giggled "No nothing is wrong. I was wondering if you would like to travel with me and Will, my trainer.

He blinked then looked to Claire who was smiling "Really? That's...generous, but I don't think I could, who'd help my mo-." Claire chuckled interrupting him "I don't think it would matter Ardent because I was going to go along anyway. So you don't need to worry about me." His eyes widened in surprise at the news and looked down at the unfinished berries.

"Are you sure? What if so-" Claire giggled cutting him off "Doubting your own mother, are we?" a smirk evident on her muzzle. He blushed stuttering a little in response "N-no..." Nina giggled at the pair. "We would love to have you both, but it's entirely up to you." He closes his eyes for a few seconds then sighs "Okay, we'll go along. Just two conditions." Nina perks her ears "Yes?" He looks at her with a smirk "Both you and your trainer have to battle me and I don't want to be put in those balls or whatever they are called." Nina giggles with a grin of her own "Deal! Since you want to battle, I'd have to introduce you to my trainer." She glanced towards the forest expectantly. "This is Will." Rustling came more audible as the human stumbled to the clearing and gave a small wave.

Ardent blinked remembering the human and stayed put looking him up and down. He wasn't as tall as he remembered, though the cobalt eyes and long brown ponytail gave away the familiar features. Will walked over to Nina "Hey girl, enjoy lunch?" She murred at his petting and nodded. "Yep!"

"So he wants to battle? I'm open for a challenge." Will looked at the umbreon with a friendly smile. Ardent still blinking, wondered how this human knew of their conversation so suddenly. "I have telepathy as a gift. I can read Nina's thoughts or yours. Though I won't read anyone's thoughts freely for it could be thought of as an invasion of privacy. So we going to battle or not?"

Will's voice hummed in his head like a tuning fork. His eyes widened at this new fact and got up, smirking at the human and vixen as he strode away a short distance before turning around getting into a battle stance. "Bring it on then, Will and Nina." Will chuckled at his determination, looking down at Nina then smiled "Lets go get him." With a grin she got up and trotted into position across from Ardent. Claire watched with slight amusement, never seeing her son fight before. "This will be interesting." She mumbled to herself. The young man walked a decent distance behind Nina staring down the dark pokemon before him.

"Go!" Will shouted to signify the battle was to begin.

Without hesitating Ardent dashed with a quick attack. Nina stood ready to dodge the full body attack thinking countering with an iron tail. Once he was 10 yards away he pulled a double team causing duplicates of himself to appear. Seeing this she charged up her flame wheel to take them all out at once. Unleashing the attack, she watched the copies disappear, but once all were destroyed the original had disappeared as well. "What?" She looked around trying to find her target. "Up there Nina, look out!" she looked up and saw a partially singed umbreon in the air already unleashing a shadow ball. The dark ball of energy sailing downwards hitting her in the side. With a yelp she stood her ground enduring some of the attack and saw him land and pull another quick attack.

"Here comes, get ready to counter!" Will's voice rung in her ears. She coiled her tails into one as it glowed silver this time she will use her iron tail. His paw glowed in a shadowy aura as he moved closer. All three parties blinked wondering what attack it was. As the distance between them closed she swung her tail to meet his jaw. He swung his paw to slash with his shadow claw only to collide with the iron tail causing them to clash with a clang. The force from the two caused some dirt and dust to fly up blinding both parties. When the dust clouds cleared up, only Nina was to be seen next to a hole. She blinked then realized what happened. He had used dig.

Will was surprised at the umbreons quick wits, using the dust to cover up his dig attack. "Nina jump away and use flamethrower into the hole!" Without thinking twice she kicked off from the ground withdrawing her breath and letting loose a jet of flame into the hole. The earth beneath her started to vibrate and heat up for there was only one way for the umbreon to go. He broke through the ground beneath her barely getting singed by the flames, his head collided into her stomach making the dig attack more powerful with the fire attack propelling him upward. She howled in pain from the blow. She was airborne for a few seconds before landing on her four paws then collapsing. Ardent doing the same only instead of collapsing he stood up as long as he could completely singed and burnt. She whimpered under his gaze and expected to black out but stood her ground as well, but her legs gave out. She flopped on the earth breathing heavily. With a sigh he limped over and nuzzled under and helped her to her paws, staying as a support 'leg', "Nina!" Will jogged over as Ardent walked her over to him.

Will was already on the move with his hands, his bag pulled open searching for potions and burn heals. "That was awesome! I haven't had my heart race so fast in years!" Claire squealed quickly padding over to help "You makeme so proud!" She nuzzled against Ardent like a cat. He chuckled in pain "Relax mom. It was just a practice fight."

Will shook his head at the statement as he approached the both injured pokemon. "Whether it was practice or not, not many have ever beaten Nina so quickly and strategically." The blushing ninetales winced at the applied potion. "You did have me beat, it's usually me who is out foxing the opponent." Ardent just smiled as the frigid spray of the burn heal soothed his burns. "Well...I didn't want make it a waste of time. Besides...you looked pretty powerful..." He sighed relaxing as the burns died down. "And I was right." She blushed harder at the compliment and just buried her face in her paws. Will laughed and then looked at the two eeveelutions. "Well I still have to 'catch' you both in order for you two to be mine." He pulled out two unique balls. One black with a red ring shaped like Ardent's own ring design and one purple with a red gem to match the gem on Claire's forehead.

Ardent frowned a bit at the ball. "I don't have to stay in that thing all the time do I?" Will just chuckled at the question. "Only if you don't want to, but you will if you are injured to the extreme, or if some special reason occurs." Thinking it over he nods then stands up. Claire doing the same "I'll stay in the ball when we travel. I wouldn't want these delicate paws of mine to be dirtied." She shook her paw free of sand. Will smiled at the statement "Sounds like an agreement" With that he tossed the balls at them both. They hit the ground and shook until there was no resistance, signifying they were caught. He picked them up placing Claire on his belt and releasing Ardent from the ball.

"Feel better?" Ardent shook his head "That was weird...let's definitely not do that again anytime soon." Will chuckled and pet him. Ardent accepted the petting and murred then looked at Nina who was smiling at them both. "We ready to leave or not?" she asked. Will nodded and gathered their belongings. Once he had all their stuff together they started walking into the forest again towards town.

"So where to first?" Ardent asked seeing as they were heading back into town. "I need to get you both to the center first." He chuckled at the nervousness on the umbreon's face. "Don't worry, I explained what happened to the nurse. Besides, if they try anything, they have to get through me." He nodded at Will feeling a little more assured. Nina giggled "Will is more like a guardian then a trainer to me, though he doesn't like to think that." Will shrugged off the statement but kept the smile. "Maybe, but if you are asking where to after the center, it's a place up in the mountains. Something has caught my attention and it needs to be taken care of first and I think you might like where it is."

"Alright" he trailed off. 'This is going to be a weird adventure...but atleast it won't be a lonely one.' He looked at Nina then realized he was staring and looked ahead, though she wasn't paying attention. They walked on, Ardent still deep in thought again about his escapade with his dream...
