Apocalypse: Branch Chapter Four

I woke up feeling something grab my leg. I jumped out of bed grabbing my glock and aiming at the foot of the bed. I sighed in relief seeing it was just Nicole. She however hit the floor as soon as she saw the gun in my paw. I walked over to her and helped her up.

"Sorry for that, guess I'm getting a little jumpy." I said.

"I'll have to help you out with that." Jen said seductively as she walked past us letting her tail brush against me.

Nicole followed Jen to the window at the front of the room looking through the window curiously.

"Looks like they found us again, be ready to go out shooting."

"Not until after breakfast though I'm starving." Pyro said walking out of the bathroom.

"What are the choices?" Nicole asked walking over to him and the food we had brought in.

"Looks like its either cold soup or jerky." He said rummaging through the bag.

After we ate we packed everything up and checked our guns to make sure they were working properly. We moved the barricade away from the door and got ready to fight our way to the jeep. Jen flung the door open and we all tensed up expecting zombies to come pouring in, but they had vanished.

We walked out to the jeep slowly scanning the area for any movement. Just as we got to the jeep I heard a hiss coming from above us. I looked up and saw a large iguana perched on the roof staring down at us hungrily. He jumped off the roof aiming strait for me. He knocked my rifle away as he fell to the ground. Lucky for us his legs snapped on impact.

"Hey Nicole I Think its time you killed your first zombie." I said.

She walked over to me slowly and aimed the gun at the lizard as it slowly dragged itself toward us. She pulled the trigger and the gun lurched in her hands. The bullet buried itself in the pavement next to the zombie's head. She took aim again this time gripping the pistol more firmly.

A large hole appeared in the zombies head as she pulled the trigger. Spraying blood and gore over the pavement. The shot alerted the other zombies in the area to our presence and they came running around the building. I snatched my rifle off the ground a leapt into the jeep firing at the small crowd of zombies sprinting toward us as the others got in.

I floored it as soon as I heard the last door close. We were pushed back into our seats as it lurched forward And the zombies fell away. We sped off down the road headed toward the next small town. We figured that if we stayed in the small town we wouldn't run into too many zombies. It seemed like they were all headed towards the coasts anyway.

We came to a stop on a hilltop overlooking a small town. It was surrounded by a twelve ft perimeter wall. We could see lights coming from some of the buildings, but there were zombies around every inch of the wall. Trying to claw their way over or through it. There were guards in makeshift towers along the wall shoot any zombies that got to close to the top.

"SURVIVORS!" Jen shouted happily.

"Yeah a whole town but the real question is if they are friendly." Pyro said.

"You guys want to check it out or go around and avoid a dangerous situation." I asked.

"What dangerous situation?" Nicole said.

"The one were we are waiting in a hoard of zombies while some idiot decides weather or not to let us in."

"Hold on I have an idea." Pyro said crawling into the back. He soon came back up holding one of the radios we had used while scavenging. "Maybe they're already trying to ask us." He switched it on and started fiddling with the dial.

After a minute of static a voice suddenly came through. "...is tower six I spotted an unidentified vehicle about a click out on lookout hill please advise."

Jen grabbed the radio. "Hey we're in the jeep and we were wondering if we could come in and rest for a bit."

After a minute of silence a different voice came over the radio. "This is Mayor Stanford how many of you are there and how long do you wish to stay?"

"There's four of us and I'm not sure how long."

"Well you can stay as long as you have supplies to trade. If you wait a minute we can clear the gate area for you."

We heard what sounded like a firefight erupt near the gate and several furs in some kind of armor came out and signaled us to come in after they had mopped up the area around the gate. I drove in slowly as the jeep bounced over the piles of zombies. I came to a stop in front of a second interior gate as they closed the first one behind us. They hosed the blood off the jeep and had us get out.

"Alright im going to need all of you to follow one of us for an examination to confirm you are uninfected. You need not worry there are both male and female examiners and you may choose whatever makes you more comfortable." One of the soldiers said pointing to a line of furs in lab coats.

"What about our gear?" I asked.

"We will sanitize it and it will be returned to you. Now please follow on of the examiners into the medical bay."

I turned around and saw that the others had already chosen who to follow and left me with a large lion. I swallowed silently trying to get the knot out of my through before following him though the door. He showed me to a small room with painfully white walls.

"Please undress and take a seat on the table I'll be back in a moment." He said walking out of the room and shutting the door behind him.

I did as I was told and waited on the table patiently. He came back a few minutes later with a stethoscope around his neck. He walked over to the wall and pulled a pair of latex gloves from a box and pulled them on noisily snapping them.

"Alright this shouldn't take long I just have to search you for any bite marks or other wounds that may have infected you. Stand up and spread out like your doing jumping jacks."

I did so and he went ever every inch of me brushing my fur as he went so that he could see my skin. After that he gave me a standard checkup and took some blood.

"Okay that's it for now you can put this on and join your friends." he said handing me some scrubs.

"what about my cloths?"

"They will be washed sterilized and returned to you."

I slipped the scrubs on and followed his through a maze of hallways to a sort of holing area. There was a separate bathroom and four bunks along with a table and chairs in the middle.

"You will be required to stay here tonight. Once we complete the blood tests you will be able to move through the town as you please. If you wish you can even become a resident."

"Is that offer available to all of us?"

"Of course but to become a resident you must find a niche in the community."

"you guys seem pretty well set up and organized since the world went to hell a couple weeks ago."

"We started here long before this catastrophe. The town is completely self sufficient and has been for several years. We only added the watchtowers when we were first attacked."

"Why was this place built?"

"We foresaw some kind of disaster that would require us to be self sufficient. So we preempted the disaster. That's enough questions for now you friends will be finished soon and you should all get some sleep."

Just as he said that Pyro and Rachel came walking through the door. The doctor nodded to us and walked out. Jen Soon followed them and we all chose a bunk and I hit the lights enveloping the small room in darkness.
