Boundless: Act 1

After the meeting with Cedric I asked Scott if he could drive me home. As we drove along in the familiar patchwork Mitsubishi that we always called the "Shitsubishi" I couldn't stop thinking about Cedric and the strange manner we had met. I must have been thinking too hard I barely heard Scott in the back ground.

"You okay man? You seem a bit spacey." He glanced over as he drove toward my home town of Brownfield.

"Yeah I'm fine don't worry. Hey by the way you didn't happen to notice anything weird right?" I was beginning to question my own sanity.

"No nothing that I can remember. Why do you ask?"

"Just wondering that's all." I managed to fake a smile to defuse the situation.

I rode the rest of the way in silent thought. How could I have seen Cedric but not Scott and Mike? What was this guardian business? And more importantly how did he know me? All these questions buzzed in my head like a swarm of wasps picking at my brain.

A few minutes later I was home. I exited the car and waved Scott off. I turned to go into the house when I noticed him.

"Welcome home Jacob." It was Cedric leaning on one of the eve posts.

"When you said later I didn't think it would be this soon." I said with a grimace "So what are you doing here?"

"I figured I'd see where you live."

"That's not stalker like at all."

Just then the front door opened. My little black Pomeranian dog Onyx popped out into the yard fallowed by something larger. It was my grandfather William, a seventy three year old Grizzly Bear. Despite his appearance my grandfather was the nicest guy around. He took a moment to look Cedric over.

"Who's your friend Jacob?" He said with a smile.

"His name is Cedric. Cedric meet Grampa, Grampa meet Cedric. " I tried to get the meet and greets over as soon as possible.

"Pleasure to meet you Cedric, would you like to stay for dinner?"

"That would have to be a . . ." That's all I could manage to say needless to say Cedric was quicker.

"I would love to stay for dinner with Jacob's family." He smiled.

My mind had one word flowing through my mind "Fuck!" Now I had to deal with him. My grandfather opened the door and ushered us inside. We ascended the stairs and entered the living room.

"Hunny come here for a minute. I want to introduce someone to you." He called out to the kitchen.

Not long after my grandmother Peggy emerged. She was a 75 year old Grey Hare; she was like a mother to me and my friends and we were her children.

"Oh! Who might this be?" she said with a smile.

"This is Cedric, I just met him recently." I explained.

"Well its pleasure to meet you, you can call me Nana." She hopped over and gave him a small hug.

I grabbed Cedric by the arm and yanked him towards my room. "We'll be in here talking, playing games and what not. Come get us when dinners ready ok?"

My Nana nodded and hoped back to the kitchen and my grandfather when to his computer in there room. I pulled Cedric into my room and with a light shove sat him on the bed as I locked the door.

"Oh my! So forceful that's kind of sexy. What are you going to do with me?" He said excitedly as he smirked. I lost it and back handed him across the face.

"Cut the shit. Now are you going to tell me what you want or not?"

He rubbed his cheek a little wincing slightly. "Sorry about that." I walked over to my mini fridge and grabbed a cold cloth. I sat down beside him and touched up the bruise.

"Thank you Jacob." I was taken aback by his statement it made me blush slightly. "Aww you're a shy one how cute."

I stopped rubbing and regained my composure.

"So let's start from the beginning, how is it that you know me and I don't know you?"

He smiled "We used to be childhood friends. Our mothers were best friends so we were together since we were five that's when I moved away." His smile became then became sullen "I returned just recently after I learned about your mom's passing you have my sympathy."

I looked away trying to avoid eye contact, as tears began to pool in my eyes. I was always with my mom. We did everything together; I always had more a bond with her than my father.

"I see. So what exactly are you supposed to do as a guardian?"

This made him blush slightly. "Well my mother and yours swore that you and I would always be together and that I would protect and well umm . . . love you."

I couldn't help but blush in light of this. I began to feel a tingle on my right arm that grew heading towards my shoulder. I was a little scared when it glowing words spelled out "Boundless".

Cedric smiled at this. "This is our bond." He lifted the left sleeve of his coat which revealed the same word on his arm.

This lasted only a moment for he dashed to the window and peered out into the yard. I walked over and saw what it was that had drawn him. Two wolves stood in the driveway one white and one black, both with evil in their eyes.
