Chapter 6

One full year after I got the news that my parents were dead. All of my injuries were healed but my tail never did, I moved it too much for that. Mr. Fluck was in jail for rape charges. Mike worked at home now and I had my own job. I was graduated with my diploma on its way in the mail. Tiamara and Timothy still lived with me, although we had to move Timothy out of Mike's room. Mike met a girlfriend. She is very nice. Her name is Kala Fornak, another otter around the house.

"You don't have a middle name do you?" It was just me and Kala at the house.

"What do you mean?"

"Well I heard Mike call you Crystal Sky, and he didn't seem mad or anything."

"My first name is Crystal Sky. My full name is Crystal Sky Marie Daneson. I don't use my middle name because I really don't like it."

"Oh. Why would someone give their child two first names?" I forgot to mention she was a dumbass.

"Just drop it."

"Okay. Hey do you wanna go shopping? The mall just opened a new department."

"No."

"I'm buyin'."

"Sure. Let's go. I'll drive. My car." My Challenger was not damaged in my first accident so I kept driving it. I drove because I didn't trust Kala's driving.

"Why don't you ever let me drive your car? She asked. She was always asking stupid questions.

"You don't drive my car because I want to keep it in one piece. To be honest, you scare me when you're behind the wheel."

"At least you tell the truth. My mom always used to say 'He who doesn't tell the truth is damned from the start.' I follow what my mom says, she's pretty smart. Almost as smart as me. Ooo! Ice cream! Can we stop for some on the way back?"

"Maybe," I said, and then added under my breath, "If you ever shut up."

Amazingly, we made it to the mall without me trying to strangle Kala.

"So where do you wanna go first."

"Lunchtime. Food court."

"But we just got here. You have to at least go to one store before lunch."

"Oh, really, Kala? Who said that, your mom?"

"Nope. That is in the unwritten rulebook to mall shopping. Wow, you're really a country-girl. I need to take you out more often. And now that Mike and I are getting married we can go all the time."

I almost choked on the gum I had been chewing. "Married? Mike hasn't said anything about that to me!"

"Oh, he doesn't know yet. He's thinking it but hasn't said anything out loud. I can read his thoughts, you see. I could tell he wanted to marry me last night while we were making love."

"You really are a whack-job aren't you?"

"You know, a lot of furs tell me that."

I wasn't surprised. I thought about Mike and Kala for a second. She would be good for him. She is really nice. They seem to love each other too. And then I started to think about Kala and me. Our relationship kinda reminded me of Barbara Jean and Reba on that TV show. Except she wasn't marrying my ex, she was marrying my brother. Marrying a brother might be worse; this means she won't have to leave the house when I tell her to beat-it.

Kala drug me around to three lingerie stores, a "toy" store, which I didn't mind, and a cosmetics store before I could pick one that I wanted to see.

"A toy car store?"

"It's not a toy car store. It's a die-cast and model cars store. Plus, here I can get decorative stuff for my car."

"You are such a tom-boy."

"I was raised around Mike. You do the math. Oh, wait, never mind. My dad and Mike were a big influence on me growing up."

"Okay, but I still don't get it."

All I could do was slap my forehead.

"You know, I don't see many girls in here."

I turned around. At the counter was a super hot otter-guy.

"Put your tongue back in your head, Crystal Sky."

I gave Kala a dirty look. She was right though.

"Hi, I'm Tim, Tim Jensen. So what brings you here, miss... uh."

"Daneson. I'm Crystal Sky Daneson."

"Miss Daneson pleased to meet you."

"Charmed."

"I'm Kala Fornak."

"You're also getting married to my brother, beat-it. So do you come here often?"

"I work here. I'm wondering, though, what brings a beauty such as yourself to my humble car shop."

"I have a '70 Challenger and I'm looking for something to make it more personal to me. I got a pic on my phone."

"You own that? Awesome. Hey, Erik, come look at this."

A burly badger came from the back of the store. "What it is?"

"This is Crystal Sky. She has a 1970 Dodge Challenger totally custom. What does it have under the hood? I'm dying to know."

"It's got a 350 small block with a hemi supercharger engine."

Erik looked as shocked as Tim. He took a closer look at my phone. "Hey, I know this car. It's the one that almost hit my truck last year." The badger looked up at me, "You were the one that almost got run over by me. God I'm sorry."

"Don't worry about it. Just please can we talk about the car and what I can get for it?"

"So decorations, huh? What did you have in mind?"

"I was thinking maybe some seat covers and floor mats for starters."

"Any specific pattern?"

"I want blue roses." Kala looked bored with all this car talk. "Hey, why don't you go walk around. I'll meet up with you at the food court for dinner."

She was gone faster than a blink of an eye.

"We don't have any blue rose covers in stock at the moment, but we can order them."

"How long before they get here?"

"About two days. It's usually quick. You're gonna have to give me a deposit of twenty dollars and your phone number though."

I giggled. "Who said I wasn't going to give you my number anyway?"

I payed and gave my number. He slipped his in with my receipt.

I left and went to find Kala, and we went home with a car-full of stuff. Mostly hers.

The two days waiting for the covers took forever. The only time it seemed to fly by was when Tim and I talked.

When Tim called me for the covers, I was there in ten minutes. Just to see him. I could care less for what I bought.

"So your friends call you Blue? Must be for those intoxicatingly beautiful eyes. What do boyfriends get to call you?"

"Does this mean you're asking me out?"

"That depends, what can I call you?"

"How about you call me yours." I wrote down my address, "Pick me up at eight."

"Eight. Got it."

"Hey, move it girly, some furs are trying to buy stuff here." There were customers behind me that were getting impatient.

"I'll see you later." With all the distraction I almost forgot my seat covers.

At seven-thirty I was climbing out of the shower. I couldn't decide what to wear.

"Mike, what do you think I should wear? The blue dress or the black one. I don't know where we are going."

"Hm. The black dress screams 'do me', maybe on the third date. The blue one...a little open, isn't it? What about this one?"

He pulled a long silver dress from my closet. "That was worn to Aunt Pearl's fifth wedding three years ago. I don't think it fits."

Tiamara walked in. "The blue one, definitely."

"Thank you, Tiamara. See, Mike, Tiamara thinks the blue dress is just fine."

"Of course she does, she would wear skimpier clothes than that to a funeral."

Tiamara scoffed, "I would not, unless it was to one where I didn't know anybody."

"I rest my case."

"Oh, get out of here, both of you. I gotta get dressed."

Being an otter, there were advantages when getting ready for a date after a shower. My long black hair dries very quickly. I wasn't really a girly-girl so I didn't own much make-up. What I did have was just enough to bring out the brightness in my face.

I was half-way through applying eye-shadow when I heard Tim pull up.

"Oh, Dammit."

"Crystal Sky, Tim's here."

"I know, Mike. Be right down."

I hurried but trying to look as best I could, and slowly walked down the stairs. I took my pills for a precaution.

"Wow, you look better than a first date."

"Is it too much? I can go change. Maybe take off some of my face."

"No, no. You look perfect. I'm just underdressed."

He can make me smile, always a good sign.

I was expecting a movie and a cheap dinner with us going back to his place. Instead Tim took me to a fancy five-star restaurant and we walked on the beach afterwards.

"How was dinner?"

"It was delicious. You should have let me take some of the bill."

"Rule number one of dating; never let the lady pay for dinner or a movie. Rule two; let her make the first move."

"Oh, so you're too chicken to kiss me first, huh?"

"I never said that. I meant I won't force myself on you like that."

We stopped and turned to face each other. "Thank you." We held hands and walked for quite a while. "How 'bout a swim?"

"We didn't bring swimsuits."

"Exactly." I leaned in to kiss him gently.

He pulled away slowly. "It wouldn't be right, not so soon."

I gave him one of those caring smiles. "You're not like other guys, are you?"

"I respect women."

"I knew you would. I could see it."

We walked and talked the whole length of the beach. I found out Tim was nine-teen and lives on his own. Along with working at the mall, he owns his own garage for classic cars and trucks. His favorite colors are purple, blue and black. He has no brothers and no sisters. His parents were wealthy furs, but he didn't say what they did, that didn't give him any money, he made his own way.

I told him everything about me, including my time with the psychiatrist. He finally dropped me off at home at a quarter to midnight. Everyone at home was awake and in the living room with the lights off.

"What took you so long?"

"Mike? It's none of you business. I am eight-teen, I can be out as long as I want."

"Where did you go?"

I heaved a loud sigh, "If you really must know, we went back to his shitty apartment and squealed like a pen full of pigs." The look on Mike's face was of pure hatred to Tim. "We went to that new five-star restaurant, the Shangri-La. And no, before you even ask. We did not do anything. Tim has better principals than that. We only kissed in front of the door. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm tired. I'm going to bed."

Mike got to meet Tim again and got to know him. We went on many more dates. On the third one, like Mike suggested, we actually did get into bed, figuratively speaking. We did it at the beach. I was amazed at how long something good could last lately.
