So I started this like two years ago. Finished it a month or two ago. Wanted to try and do a thing for longer piece/safe for work thing. Between the loss of interest, life and general time I do my writing, this took much longer than it should have.

But i'm happy enough with it. Not how I view either character anymore but still a thing that shows I could do it (with much help).

Thanking http://carlminez.sofurry.com/ for helping.

Of Ice and Earth

Winter's piece of charcoal scratched along a scroll as he made notes to his observations. The IceWing was always glad to see new things the scavengers did. They were a constant in his life, dare he say the only one, with everything else changing around him. He lost his family, though he really only missed his brother Hailstorm, and he lost his home in the Ice Kingdom. His desire for its cold weather and icy beauty got to him at times. He had joined the remnants of the Talons, under the SeaWing Riptide, to study scavengers as his passion. Only a year since Darkstalker got loose, the lost continent Pantala had reappeared from its mythological state, since that SandWing Qibli had won the heart of...

No. He needed to stop thinking of her. He needed to move on. Yet, Winter continued to long for her and his own heart kept bleeding. Shaking his head, the IceWing looked down at his talon to see it trembling. He was disgusted with himself. Here he was, the ex-prince of the IceWings, hung up over a NightWing female. There were other females he had met, as they joined or passed through, but none got to him like Moon. With a sigh, Winter looked down and realized he had sketched her. His lip curled into a snarl before he stood, the desk wobbling from the force of his sudden action. The scavengers scattered, diving into their burrows, once more fearful of the dragon who had worked so hard to earn their trust. It caused the IceWing to furrow his brow, some guilt souring the taste in his throat as he left after locking them inside.

It was disheartening to know that sometimes he felt he could lash out at them. He didn't want to. He hated it, this feeling. Ducking under vines that constituted as a door, he nearly bowled over a muscular SeaWing. Catching himself, Winter shuffled his wings, ice spines clinking softly. All he wanted to do was go flying and cool off.

"What are you doing here this late Riptide?"

Behind the leader of the Talons, the three moons had risen. One was filled and the other two were differing sized crescents. The SeaWings strong voice spoke in the quiet night.

"There's someone here you may know."

Winter shivered slightly in nervousness, he wanted to believe it was a fellow scavenger lover. Or Kinkajou, though she never was announced like this. She just appeared whenever. No, it was likely Turtle or Peril, Qibli or the one he dreaded seeing most, Moonwatcher. A feeling as if his scales were crawling passed over Winter as he followed Riptide. They maneuvered through the small village to the SeaWing's abode. No one was there. A sigh escaped the Talon leader.

"He was supposed to stay here."

He? Winter let out a sigh of relief. At least it wasn't her. Riptide turned to head out of the camp with the IceWing in tow. The small forest was navigated with ease from the two locals, ending with them looking towards a raised outcropping of rocks. Upon the rock, a figure appeared lying there, that slowly came more into focus as the two approached. As details became apparent of the newcomer, Winter's breath caught in his throat. Silhouetted against the full moon was a MudWing, brown scales shining, wings riddled with tears and holes of combat. His muscular body was scarred, the tail missing pieces here and there. The IceWing almost choked on air as pale amber eyes turned to him, a scar traveling over one of them. But it was the familiar burn mark on the snout he vaguely recalled, searching his memories quickly to drag up thoughts of an old clawmate.

"U-Umber?"

The MudWing's intense stare remained as he dipped his head. Three moons, this was Umber? The slightly dippy goofball had changed if this was any indication. Just from the exchange, Winter could tell he was quieter and harder of heart. As Umber dropped from the rock and strode towards them, the IceWing watched the scales ripple over the muscles. Moons, the Mudwing was like a walking canvas, his body marked with many hardships. And that silhouette! Winter was itching to dip his claws in ink and work on that. He'd never really felt the urge to draw something so badly in a long while. Umber had changed so drastically from the hazy memory of his old classmate. It wasn't long before he joined the two of them.

"Welcome Umber. I'm sure you remember Winter."

Another simple nod. So strange, the MudWing used to be much more vocal.

"Winter, I know it's sudden, but since it is late, I would like Umber to stay with you tonight."

The IceWing was taken aback. "W-what? Me?!" He bit his tongue on being disrespectful to his leader, but his gaze spoke volumes of how crazy he thought the SeaWing was being. Riptide's expression grew hard.

"You're one of the few still up and I know you've shared a space before. Don't force me to relocate your time away from scavengers."

Before, Winter would have drawn from his royal heritage to argue. Instead, he wilted under Riptide's stern gaze. He sighed a "Sure, whatever" and turned to return home.

Soft padding sounded behind him, signifying Umber's steps. Even his walking was light. Not that Winter really acknowledged it, focused on the ground as he was while navigating back. Walking in the forest often had its perks. The village easily slipped into his peripheral as Winter led the MudWing to his dwelling. Ducking under the 'door', the IceWing slid through the house with practiced ease. A small light made him look over his shoulder and see Umber finish releasing a puff of flame. The amber eyes flicked before the illumination wore out, Winter returning to his trek around the front of his home to the back hidden behind a wall. He stopped as he realized there was only one bed.

"You can have the nest," Winter said while turning around to lay on the parlor's rug. It was then he saw the small but thick MudWing already curled up there. Moving forward, the IceWing nudged Umber, who raised his head to look at Winter.

"The bed is in there." He watched as the MudWing's gaze flicked past him before returning to lock with his own deep blue one. The intensity made Winter fidget in place before ducking his head.

"I'll, uh, leave you to sleep."

Again, he spun around but this time, he got on the soft cushions he had gotten, curling up and closing his eyes. This had to be one of the strangest days of his life.

Waking the next day, the IceWing yawned and stretched. His stomach growled before he sighed and left the sleeping nook only to find Umber, sitting patiently with a leaf by his feet filled with food. Winter took in the fruits and fish on the 'platter'. Then it was lightly pushed forward, everything lightly jostled. His head rising from the floor, the IceWing tilted his head.

"For me?"

Another curt nod as Umber stepped back. Winter approached and bent down, snapping up a fish. It was fresh tasting, something you didn't always get when storing food for a village like they did here. Picking up a fruit, he bit into it and almost drooled the juices out. Three moons, it was juicy and sweet and divine. Fruit wasn't even something he liked that much but this...

"Where did you get this?"

"I hunted."

Winter froze at the words. The voice was quiet and light yet rough, like Umber's appearance. The IceWing felt a tingle run over his body. Moons, what was his problem? Winter went back to eating as the MudWing turned and left. Shaking himself, the IceWing couldn't understand what was happening to him. He could only equate this feeling to how his nerves acted up around Moonwatcher. Another shake before he finished off his meal, Winter following after Umber. The MudWing sat relaxed, but the flicking eyes and flaring nostrils spoke of a keen observation of his surroundings, as if in wait for an ambush. It was strange, he seemed almost like Sunny's mother, Thorn. Small but highly dangerous.

Winter padded by Umber on his way to Riptide for assignment. He tensed as the MudWing followed, wishing he could figure things out by himself. On the way, he stopped by the scavenger den they had created here to feed them. A simple breakfast of meat and berries. Having studied them, he was always amazed at their abilities. There was much to observe and note about these mysterious creatures. As of late courting had arisen among a few of the small creatures. Winter wondered briefly, as he had before, if he'd get to see their actual mating habits. It was doubtful, they were averse to even showing their affection around dragons and it also brought up a sore point for him.

It felt like all Winter did the last while was shake himself. He focused on his talons as he waited in line for his daily assignment. Eyes flicked up to see a SkyWing's red scales and a smile tugged at his muzzle. It was great to see so many tribes working together. As the dragon moved on, Winter moved forward to Riptide, the SeaWing looking over his parchment before his gaze came up to see who was next. Then it lowered to the paper and then back up.

"Today's hunting for you Winter." The SeaWing glanced over the IceWing's shoulder. "Take Umber with you."

Great. Just great. Even more time with the dragon confusing him. Pinching his snout, Winter turned and led the quiet MudWing to the storeroom to grab a few baskets used for hunting. They set off to meet the others on hunting duty, the awaiting SandWing and RainWing nodded to them before discussing the plan for where they would go. They would split into pairs before splitting again further out and surprisingly, Umber went with the RainWing. Must be something new with the MudWing, perhaps from his time abroad? It wasn't long before Winter was alone while he hunted for meat. Hours flew by as he got goats and birds, meeting his quota and getting a few extra bits before heading back to the designated meeting points. The IceWing had to double-take on Umber's load, seeing more fish and fruit than many ventures ever showed around here.

The haul was taken to the storeroom and lunch was handed out to them. The MudWing took less food than the others, making Winter pause. Why was Umber so different than before? Sure, he wasn't a glutton like Clay, but what had changed him so much? He wanted to talk to the MudWing as much as he wanted to get away from him for a while. Stupid confusing dragon. The IceWing sighed, but decided to go to his scavenger den, the other drake following as always.

Coming into the den, Winter went to the scroll rack and pulled out one full of notes. Moving to a desk, he read over the material again and started to write on another scroll already there. A glance up showed Umber just sitting there, tail twitching as he looked about.

"This is a scavenger observation den, if you were wondering. You're welcome to read the notes," Winter offered.

"Can't."

The IceWing looked up fully now, seeing the MudWing shuffle a bit, looking timid. So, some of the old Umber remained. Regardless, Winter's inner scientist begged him to ask.

"Why not? Scared of scavengers?" He couldn't help but think of Glory's bodyguard, Deathbringer, at that.

"Read."

Winter tilted his head. Umber sighed and focused on his talons. "I can't read."

The IceWing was shocked at the very least. His maw opened and closed several times as he tried to speak. How on Pyrrhia did a dragon not learn how to read? Winter couldn't fathom it. Umber's gaze turned to steel as he hissed out a "what?". The cold tone made ice seem warm in comparison. The IceWing's gaze dropped to his talons on the desk, shifting uncomfortably.

"Just," Winter swallowed audibly, "with the war over and all..."

"The war here ended. Not on Pantala."

That got Winter's attention. "You were on Pantala?!"

The glare and growl that came from Umber signaled a change from that topic. "Uh, w-well, m-maybe I cou-could teach you?"

The MudWing tilted his head. "Why?"

Good question. "I feel you should have that opportunity. The SandWing war took so much from people. At least this is something that can be learned no matter the age."

Winter saw the conflict on Umber's muzzle. After a moment, the imposing MudWing deflated and the old Umber showed through. A meek nod was the answer. The IceWing smiled, turning and grabbing material to teach Umber the alphabet.

Two months. It had been two months since Umber had come to the Talons. Since reading and writing lessons started. Two months for Winter to become more confused and scared of what was happening to him. So much had and was changing in his life now. It was small at first, really. Umber kept following him, helping with any task he could. Being strong and limber, Umber could preserve through anything, though not a whole lot was overly hard at the camp. And his sparring prowess was phenomenal. Winter always watched the sleek body perform, his heart racing. Though that only happened when spectating, usually he was the one fighting against Umber to keep his skills sharp. His home had gotten a second nest, moss and leaves this time with a small curtain to close off the sleeping area. The IceWing had to step over the bed to get to his own but he didn't mind. He'd grown used to hearing the other's soft breathing and the MudWing's presence gave him a little more confidence. It was strange, that bit but as before, Winter didn't mind.

Something Winter enjoyed a lot was teaching Umber. The MudWing wasn't the quickest study, but he took it seriously. Already, Umber could recognize letters and understood how to string them together. His writing was slower, being sloppy and rough but improving. What terrified Winter was that he felt weird around the MudWing now. He really enjoyed their conversations though, when the IceWing could get Umber to speak about things. It was the past first, Winter telling about how Darkstalker got loose, the things he did and how he was defeated. Umber told about the SandWing war, what he'd learned from it and even a little of Pantala. The MudWing avoided the lost continent topic with something akin to passion. The topic changed to their cultures, Winter told about the ranking system and IceWing nobility. He told about his life growing up as the disappointment of his family. How he missed his frozen homeland and his brother Hailstorm. Umber told him about the MudWing sibling bond and his family. He spoke of the MudWing custom of breeding nights, though Winter felt at odds with the idea of only having what was basically one night stands. He wondered if Umber had ever participated. The IceWing didn't like that thought, bothered by it more than he thought he should be. They continued on, telling embarrassing moments and reminiscing on the old days, good and bad.

Another thing changing was his interests. He still enjoyed his scavengers, but he had taken to doing more sketches these days. Many of the camp's members even came to ask for one, paying him a little for his service. It was strange for Winter to believe, he never thought he was good enough to be paid for it. Another hobby turning into something more. Almost like with Umber. A weird feeling came to the IceWing whenever he considered the MudWing. He felt close to him, almost like family but not quite. Best friend maybe? He'd never had one of those before, minus Lynx of course. A pang of sorrow hit him whenever he thought of the people he had to leave behind in his exile. Granted, they were few but they meant a lot to Winter.

It was during one of his somber moods that he found another MudWing waiting outside of his residence after his usual morning camp activity. Looking over the newcomer, the IceWing determined that the new MudWing was female. She was lying upon the ground, a scroll rolled open in front of her along with a satchel resting on her side. Behind him, he heard Umber stop walking before he brushed past Winter. The MudWing approached the other, stopping and speaking only a name.

"Sora?"

The female looked up and a smile graced her muzzle. She put away her scroll and wrapped her wing around Umber. Confused, Winter stepped closer and asked, "Is she a friend Umber?"

As the wings retracted, the IceWing saw the grin tugging at the male MudWing's snout, a rare occurrence. "Winter, this is Sora, my sister. Sora, this is Winter."

Ah. That explained the grin. It was an uncommon occurrence for the MudWing, Winter had noticed. Not like when they had first met back in the academy. Though the IceWing would be the first to admit, he wasn't the best around dragons that weren't IceWings, so maybe he didn't notice. Dipping his head, Winter spoke. "It is nice to meet you Sora. I have heard stories of you from Umber."

He saw a flush appear on the female's face as she hid beneath her claws. "Hopefully nothing bad."

"Only the best. Smartest one, right?"

Sora wrung her talons and shook her head. "We're all good at something."

Winter's grin grew tight. "I think that's a matter of opinion." He couldn't help but be reminded of his parents. Shaking himself, he gestured to the entrance. "Shall we go in?"

The two MudWings and IceWing proceeded inside. There, Umber started up a small fire and placed a pot on it, throwing in some leaves. Winter looked about his abode and realized he had nothing to really offer for entertaining. Getting slightly flustered, he beckoned Sora to sit. Umber took his place next to his sister, lightly nuzzling her with the IceWing was across from them.

"What brings you here Sora?" Winter asked.

"I wanted to see Umber." She spoke quietly, gaze drifting from the floor to the Mudwing, grinning shyly. It was strange, seeing the two. One guarded and the other timid. And yet, they both would be quite different had things gone slightly in their favor. Dismissing his floating thoughts, he cleared his throat. "In that case, I should leave you two be."

"No, no" Sora hurriedly gestured, flushing as she realized she had done so. "Please, stay. I wanted to talk with you too."

"Me?"

The female nodded. She turned slightly towards Umber, who draped his wing over her back before he went and got the boiling water. Little cups were placed between them, the hot liquid steaming. Winter himself wasn't a fan of hot tea, so he lightly blew frost onto his to chill it considerably. He took a sip, tasting the cool mint. If there was at least one thing he truly did like about Umber, it was his ability to find good flavors for tea. And he liked a lot about the male MudWing...

"It's been some time since you came here Umber. What have you been doing?" The IceWing was brought out of his thoughts by Sora's question. Expecting a small answer, Winter was taken aback by what he heard.

"I have been helping Winter around the Talon's camp. I'm also learning how to read and write, though I need much more practice before I am anywhere capable of using it like a normal dragon. What about you Sora? How are the others? Tell me everything."

A smile, a true one, was plastered on Umber's face as he spoke. Winter had never seen the MudWing so happy, at least while here. He was always so...somber. As much as it pained the IceWing to know he couldn't cause a smile, he did remind himself that Umber rarely grinned around others, only him. At least he brought the male MudWing an ounce of joy.

They devolved into small talk like that. Sora told Umber how Clay was still teaching and limping about in the academy, with even more students now after the animus incident. All of the MudWing siblings were now enrolled, though it was slightly difficult for them all considering the wars that seemed to be happening quite too often after the SandWing Succession one. Sora only went part-time though, she worked directly under Queen Moorhen, as a penance for her crimes. At least it was understandable, Sora's actions, even if they were misguided and terrible.

In return, Winter was asked questions himself. Sora was quite curious about other tribes, wanting to know more and the ex-prince was happy to share what he could. There were a few topics he steered clear of, like the military of the IceWings. He wouldn't have told even if he was overly familiar with it. Then it changed to what he did, for the camp and in his spare time. He talked at length about scavengers. The female MudWing seemed interested, if not as much as Winter was. Time slipped away as they had small talk, tea all but gone. As evening rolled around, the IceWing kindly went and got some food for the three of them. Upon his return, he heard the quiet voices of the MudWings cut off. A frown etched onto his muzzle. Were they talking about him behind his back? Winter shook himself. Even if they were, it couldn't be all bad, right?

The dinner was light, some fruit and meat. He wasn't entirely sure what Sora liked, so he just asked for part of a cow for her. He got himself bear and fish for Umber with berries to go with it all. Winter wasn't entirely able to understand the male MudWing's enjoyment of fish. Maybe something from Pantala? He'd have to ask sometime...

"Winter, may I speak with you privately?"

The IceWing jerked a bit as Sora spoke. He nodded quickly, following the female out of the house and down the path some. She sat next to the road, gazing up at the stars and moon as Winter joined her.

"What do you think of Umber?"

Winter wasn't surprised by the question. He figured it was about Umber, why else would they speak privately? "He's...quiet."

That got Sora to giggle. "Go on."

The IceWing paused as he mulled over the question. "He's harsh, in a way that says hardship. Tough. Loyal. And underneath it all he's just tired and jaded. At least, that's what I think."

A silence passed between them. Winter shifted a little uncomfortably. He flexed his wings a little when Sora spoke again. "Would you ever purposely try to hurt Umber, in any way?"

The IceWing gaped, before he snapped his muzzle shut and growled, wings flaring wide. "Of course not! He's my friend!"

The female eyed him from the side, looking him over for...something. "I wonder though."

Winter slowly calmed down, moving to sit again from his defensive position. "Wonder what?"

Sora was quiet for a time. "On Pantala, Umber went through unspeakable horror." The words were barely a whisper. Winter strained his ears to hear them. "He closed himself off from everyone, even me." The female turned to look straight at the IceWing, tears welling in her eyes. The IceWing's breath caught. "His heart is suffering, Winter. Please, be careful. I fear he can't take much more pain." Drops of water trekked down her snout, to fall onto the ground. Winter's throat was closed, unable to even utter a noise as she spoke. Sora's voice was shaky. "Don't hurt my little brother." She let out a sob as she cried.

Winter was at a loss. He didn't fully understand what she was saying. He didn't know how to truly comfort someone who was dealing with something like this. So he did the only thing he could do. With no voice, he moved his body and wrapped Sora in his wings. She leaned into him, sobbing into his chest as he held her. He was flushed blue, feeling inadequate. What was he supposed to do?!

In the end, all he could do was hold Sora, lightly rubbing her side to help as she cried. After a while, footsteps approached and the IceWing lifted his head to see Umber. He knew the male MudWing could hear the anguish his sister held, a moment of anger flashing in his eyes as he looked at Winter. It evaporated quickly at Winter's own expression, clearly lost and confused. Umber came closer.

"Sora?"

Slowly, the IceWing moved his wings. The female was wiping at her eyes the best she could, turning to smile weakly at Umber. "I'm sorry. I just got caught up in the past." Umber didn't say a word, just wrapping his bigger sister in his wings and holding her, whispering something into her ear. Winter didn't try to intrude, he just left as quietly as he could. His mind was both blank and stuffed. Why did Sora say all that to him? It's not like he'd hurt Umber intentionally. And friends didn't get hurt from the heart like that, did they? Admittedly he wasn't entirely sure, but he was confident that was true. Was it they weren't actually friends yet and Sora was making sure he would be a good one? That didn't seem right. Was it they were friends and it was something more?

The IceWing froze in place, his mind latching onto that. Something more. Was it possible? That what Sora meant was that Umber might be getting feelings for him? That was ludicrous, they were both male, why would the MudWing be getting those? Unless...Was Umber into males? Winter started to hyperventilate. If he was, things would change, right? Or would they? It wasn't like being gay changed what they had going or anything, it was just something a little different. And it's not like he had feelings for Umber. Right? Moons above. Claws rubbing at his face, Winter came to the conclusion he just couldn't handle all of this right now. Instead, he hurried back to his home and went by everything, crashing into his bed and curling up into a tight ball. The words pounded into his skull, Sora's plea. Questions circled round and round as he struggled to shut out everything. It felt like many eternities when he heard movement in the front room, followed by the MudWing stepping into his own nest and laying down. Sleep would not come easily, listening to the soft breathing of his sleeping companion. Winter gripped his head as he attempted to drown everything out, imagining his home in the Ice Kingdom. It helped enough for him to drift off to a restless sleep.

A week went by as the IceWing did his best to avoid Umber. That was a lot easier said than done as they both shared a space and most of their work tended to pair them together. To get as much time away, Winter threw himself into his scavenger things, not even teaching the MudWing as he had previously as he lost himself in his work. And it was this particular evening, after all his time thinking and evading that he figured out at least some of his questions. With a new resolve, he finished his scroll and headed for the shared den. Which got all to the door before Winter was tackled and pinned to the ground, a snarling mass of brown hovering over him.

"Winter."

A shudder ran through him as his dark blue gaze was locked with the steely amber one. The IceWing swallowed the lump in his throat as his face flushed, all too aware of how close the two of them were, heart pounding out of his chest. Even though Umber was two years older, they were nearly the same size. "Y-yes?" His voice was hoarse.

"You are avoiding me."

"W-whatever gave you-"

"I know Sora spoke to you." The MudWing's deep voice cut through any attempt from Winter to speak. "What did she say to you?"

"Nothing!" It was out of his muzzle before he could stop himself. A darkness flashed through the other's eyes as he slammed a paw down beside the IceWing's head, making him flinch away.

"DO NOT LIE TO ME!" The powerful bellow was sure to draw attention and fear from varying parties. Needless to say, it left Winter's head rattled. Never before had he been this scared of a dragon, even Darkstalker was less terrifying than a truly angered Umber. The MudWing was panting heavily after that, washing the IceWing's face in heat. All he could do was whimper lightly. It seemed that was enough as shock seemed to run through Umber, who quickly got off him and deflated himself, hunching in and tucking his wings in close. He was curling in on himself as he brought his talon's up to grip his head. Winter took the moment to bring himself to order, hunching himself as he got into a sitting position. Besides their breathing, it was relatively quiet in the workshop as they gathered themselves.

"Umber..." The IceWing tentatively spoke the other's name. There was silence for a moment.

"I...am sorry, Winter." The MudWing's voice was deathly quiet, a strain to hear. "I thought I was better than this." A tear rolled down his cheek, which he rubbed away. "I will leave." Umber had turned himself towards the exit, only for Winter to jump between the two.

"No!" His voice was shaky, as he grabbed the MudWing's face in his claws. He lightly rubbed at it as he spoke again. "No. I will tell you. Sora asked me to be cautious with you."

Umber was staring at Winter with pain. "Did she tell you about Azure then?"

"Azure? No."

The MudWing's eyes lowered before he took a deep breath and raised them. "He was a Silkwing. And I loved him."

That was never a good start. "Did he die?" The words were barely a whisper but Umber's twisted laughter did not settle with the IceWing.

"I wish he had. It would have been better. No, he used me before stabbing me in the back."

"Umber..."

"I mean that literally." He was shaking now, tears streaming down his muzzle. "He almost killed me because I was foolish enough to love him." His eyes met Winter's. "Winter, I'm scared."

"He's not here now, Umber. You're safe." The IceWing moved closer, hugging his friend close to him as he cried.

"That's not what scares me." The words were so soft, but the next made Winter seize up. "I'm scared I'm falling for you. I can't...can't go through that again."

The IceWing wasn't sure what to say or do. His mind was a vortex of emotions and information and subconsciousness. He wasn't sure why his muzzle didn't work properly for him anymore as it spoke for him. "I promise I won't hurt you."

"How can you say that?!" The MudWing shoved Winter back as he stared at him with daggers.

"I'm not Azure. I do not want to lose you Umber." The IceWing was shivering himself as he spoke, knowing it to be true. "You're important to me, and I don't have many of those." His eyes lowered, claws kneading the ground. "You're not the only one still hurting." Tears squeezed out from his closed eyes, trembling before he felt claws along his snout. His gaze opened to Umber holding his muzzle, wiping away his tears. And there was a small smile there, strange as it seemed.

"I believe you Winter."

That was the best thing the IceWing could have heard. He gave a small grin in return as they embraced again, knowing the other hurt as much as they themselves did. And maybe now they could help heal each other.

Another few months passed by. Winter was feeling better than he had in a long time. He wasn't sure how he would describe it fully, but having Umber around had made it feel like all of his problems were now, finally, healing. It did confuse him some why the MudWing was still here, for sure, since Umber had family he could be with. The IceWing decided to file that away for later as he kept on writing in his scroll. Ever since their bonding through pain, both pairs of dragons had opened up towards the other. Umber was telling Winter all about Pantala, struggling through it while the IceWing spoke of his own childhood issues. A SeaWing nosed apart the curtain, coughing to draw the IceWing's attention away.

"You have a letter," Riptide said as he entered and placed the scroll on Winter's desk.

"Thank you Riptide." Winter grinned lightly and nodded at the SeaWing. The other paused before tilting his head.

"You've changed."

That pulled the IceWing up short. His gaze came up to stare at the other. "I have?"

"You seem different." Riptide shrugged his wings. "Whatever it is, keep at it. It's good to see you happy."

Happy? Winter wrinkled his nose at that. He severely doubted that. Though he would say he was content. He felt lighter than he had before. There was a chuckle from the SeaWing before he turned to leave. The IceWing sighed and turned back to his scroll, lightly scratching a few more things before bringing his attention to the letter. He pulled it over, glancing up as Riptide left and Umber ducked inside. Right, his lesson. Right after he dealt with this letter. Unrolling it, Winter didn't even need to see more than the first word to know. It was her writing. He felt numb as he read more, the words flowing just like hers did, no mistaking this as someone else's. His talons trembled as he held the note, his heart pounding loudly in his ears, his breath short. He couldn't breathe. All he could do was hold the parchment and feel as everything crashed down around him. Then his muzzle had claws on it, forcing his gaze away from the scroll. Instead, they were forced upon a familiar scarred brown muzzle. He could see into the familiar amber eyes, the pounding in his ears diminishing enough to hear him speak.

"Take deep breaths."

Winter did as he was told. Breathing deeply, feeling his chest expand before exhaling and feeling it compress. He did so again and again.

"Just look at me."

That was all the IceWing could do. It was all he wanted to do. He took in every detail of his friend's face, his own heating a little as he did so. By the moons, Umber was breathtaking. Shuddering, Winter nodded softly, feeling the talons slip from his muzzle. He was sad to feel them go. His eyes dropped to his feet, his limbs shaking. A small laugh escaped him.

"I'm pathetic."

There was a thump, followed by a flick to his forehead. The IceWing reared back some, hissing.

"Try saying that again." The hard look in the MudWing's gaze was enough for Winter to bite his tongue, hard, lest he get another flick. Those hurt. Umber turned his attention to the letter, picking it up and looking it over. It...took a little while, the MudWing's lessons doing verily well. He was much better at reading than he was at writing, weirdly, but both were still a long process. He set the parchment back down on the work desk.

"So, they're coming."

Winter just nodded. Qibli and Moonwatcher were coming to visit. They would be here by morning. It was only for a short visit, they had to be elsewhere, but as the Talon camp was not far off their path, they decided to pop in. The IceWing closed his eyes as he did more deep breathing, seeing in his mind the forms of his old friends. As he opened his gaze again, he saw the concerned look as Umber stared off into the distance. Winter knew he'd be ok with the MudWing by his side, though he was a little curious about what Umber was thinking. The IceWing mulled over his thoughts for a moment before his muzzle parted.

"What are you thinking about?"

The sly grin appeared on the MudWing's snout as he returned to the present and faced Winter. "I think this visit will prove...fruitful."

Winter tilted his head, confused. "What do you mean?" Umber didn't reply. Rather, he just slid by the IceWing, tail lightly ghosting the white scaled cheek. A strange mixture welled up inside of Winter as his face grew cool before he shook his head. "Hey! I was talking to you!" Bounding out, he attempted to pounce on the MudWing, only to have Umber slip from between his talons in a graceful roll. The MudWing backpedaled enough to be just out of reach as he hunkered his front down, grinning like a fool and riling the IceWing up all the more.

"Oh, now you're acting like a dragonet..." Winter growled lowly in his chest.

Umber's response was a raised brow before he came close, pressing his nose right against Winter's unexpectedly. The IceWing yelped and fell back on his rear, face going blue even worse than just a moment ago as his heart pounded in his chest.

"You need fun in your life," the MudWing said, then turned and unfurled his impressive wingspan. Before Winter knew it, he had beat them and launched himself into the air, gaining altitude before he started off into the sky. Winter, who had to take a few moments to get a grip of himself, shouted up after the other dragon "You're on!" If Umber truly believed he could outpace the IceWing, he had another thing coming. Taking a few running steps, Winter hurled himself into the wide, open sky to give chase to that annoying MudWing he called friend.

The next day came all too soon for Winter. After the small chase, the IceWing had to backtrack to finish up with what he had been working on and what he had neglected in his pursuit of higher knowledge into Umber's mind. Which had come to a grinding halt when the MudWing flat out refused to speak for the evening. So annoying how tight-lipped that dragon could be.

Rousing himself from sleep, Winter both desired and dreaded the meeting today. He yawned widely before stretching himself out, dragging himself out of the den. Met with Umber sitting stoically by the door, the IceWing lifted a wing in greeting. Imagining the nod he would get, he continued past and out of the home he'd made. Home. A small smile tugged at his muzzle. Winter hadn't hoped to have that again. Out into the forest again, the two progressed until they reached the clearing again. The IceWing couldn't help but think back to when Umber had first come to the camp. It was a very clear image in his mind. There was a gentle prod to his side to break his revere, the MudWing moving his paw to point towards the sky. Apprehension filled Winter as he saw the glimmer of scales coming towards them. Slowly but surely, the specs became figures and nothing could ease his racing heart. Shivering, he let out a startled eek as a wing draped over him.

"It's ok to be nervous."

Winter snorted, frost cooling the air into a puff cloud. The wing slid from his back but he felt the lingering heat and he felt calmer. He sat proudly, head high as he awaited his old friends. The wait was longer than he expected, but soon enough the two dragons descended and landed.

"Winter!"

A falter in his confidence appeared as Moonwatcher came up to him. Qibli wasn't far behind, his gaze going between him and Umber.

"Hey guys. How have you been?"

"Good, class is fun." Moon grabbed Winter's paw, holding it. "We do miss you though."

The IceWing swallowed the dryness in his throat as he glanced over the NightWing to the SandWing. "How about you Qibli?"

"Fine." Qibli was just staring at the MudWing now. "Winter, who's your friend? He seems familiar."

Moonwatcher let him go as she turned to the other dragon. She settled her gaze on him, peering intently before tilting her head. It seemed like she was puzzled. "I feel like I should know you too."

The IceWing could practically see Umber hardening a bit under that. A thump of his tail before his head hung low. After a bit of internal debate, it seemed the MudWing had decided to head back. Winter could only sigh softly.

"Your friend is rude, Winter," Qibli spoke.

"You're one to talk, forgetting an old friend."

Both of the dragons turned to stare at each other, as Winter began to follow behind the MudWing. He heard as the two followed behind, seeming lost in thought. Some point in the trek back, the two came up to walk beside Winter.

"I can't place him, Winter." The NightWing said. "Who is he?"

"Would saying he's a clawmate jog your memory?"

The SandWing hummed thoughtfully. "I didn't want to presume, but after your comment in the clearing...That was Umber, wasn't it?"

Moonwatcher gasped, wings going wide as she stopped. "Three moons, how could I have forgotten!"

Qibli moved beside her. "It's alright Moon. We didn't get a lot of time with him. I doubt anyone could recognize him either now."

The IceWing growled lowly, the two seeming startled at that. "I did." With that, he turned again and started back towards the settlement. The two followed a short time later. It took longer than wanted, the sun now cleared of the horizon. Winter took them on a path towards breakfast, figuring they'd be hungry from the trip. It was there that Umber sat waiting, with two leaves of food. He indicated them for Qibli and Moon.

"Thank you Umber," Moonwatcher said gently. The MudWing gazed at her before turning back towards the storeroom.

"He's very distant," Qibli mentioned.

"A lot's happened to all of us." The IceWing muttered.

Umber returned with even more food, which he sat at Winter's feet before going at his own meal. Fish and fruits again, though he'd gotten the IceWing red meat this time. For some reason, even though Winter wasn't the biggest fan of fish, he felt disappointed.

The day took its toll on the IceWing, having given a tour and discussing life and work with the two others. The MudWing trailed behind the three of them, always leaving them to their space but somehow seeming to be within sight distance of Winter. As much as he wanted to believe otherwise, Winter doubted he'd have made it through the day without Umber around. Being around Moon and Qibli made him antsy and the MudWing was a calming presence.

The three had ended up around a pond, chatting again. The IceWing had taken to discussing one of his favorite subjects again, the scavengers, more thoroughly this time. He went on about dietary needs, their resourcefulness and his recent foray into courtships among them. Smolder was to come soon too, so that was a great time for Winter as he had a fellow dragon interested and could go in-depth with it. Then the IceWing's mind turned to something else.

"Ah, I am also assisting Umber in his endeavor to learn reading and writing," Winter said, pride leaking into his voice and demeanor. He wasn't just moping around the camp, something they should come to know about him.

Qibli, though, seemed to miss the mark. "Umber can't read?!" Shock dripped into his words and expressions. "You can't be serious, what kind of dragon doesn't know how to read! He even came to..." the voice trailed off. The IceWing glanced over at the MudWing to see him glaring daggers at the SandWing. Winter puffed out a cloud of frost, his own blood starting to freeze.

"I, uh, didn't mean it that way," Qibli said, a small look of guilt evident, but missed as Umber had snorted and turned to walk away.

"And what way did you mean it, then?" An angry IceWing retorted. The SandWing ducked his head, shame now showing fully. "Go apologize. Now." Winter commanded, head high as he also glared ice. Qibli did as told, his wings tight against his body almost like a shield. Serves him right, thinking he's all high and mighty. Keeping an eye on him, he tensed up at the voice behind him.

"You've changed a lot."

Turning back, he gave her a sidelong glance. "And do, pray tell, have I changed?"

"Well, you usually only got angry about yourself. Not for others." A snort from the IceWing before the NightWing continued. "Anyway, it's nice to see you have a close friend."

"We're not that close," Winter said automatically before he stopped and winced. No, he needed to stop thinking like that, his old life. Backpedaling, he said, "I mean, we are, somewhat, but that doesn't matter. Qibli shouldn't be rude." Moonwatcher raised an eye ridge at that. Deciding to ignore it, he continued, "Besides, you guys have no idea what's happened with him."

"I'm glad you have him. He seems good for you. And you care about him. Whatever he is to you."

The IceWing gave her a look of bafflement before a shiver of dread ran down his spine. She knew. She was in his head, looking at things he hadn't said and things he wasn't even entirely sure of himself. Without the skyfire, he was an easy target and his already warm blood started to grow hotter. Who in Pyrrhia had given her the right to be in his mind and ask these things?

Puffing out more frost, his tail lashed the ground. "I don't need you to tell me what's good or not, what friends I should or should not make or ask about Umber. It is not your place."

"Winter..."

"NO! You do not get to say these things, pry into my affairs or my mind!" Winter was, ironically, flaming mad now. "I'm glad you picked Qibli. You do not deserve me!" He hissed out, breathing hard as his conscience caught up with his words. By the great ice dragon, had he really said that? What shocked him was that he truly did believe those words. He...didn't feel inferior. If anything, he felt a little cold blow over whatever he had felt in the past for Moon. Was he...finally moving on?

The NightWing just stared at him for what seemed an eternity before dipping her head down. A million things seemed to zip around the IceWing's mind, most prominently an apology. As he was about to open his muzzle to say sorry, Moonwatcher beat him to it. "You're right, Winter." Her head raised back up as she stared past him. "They're back."

"It's getting late, we should probably head back," Qibli said.

Indeed, the sun was starting to set already. It felt weird a whole day had passed already. Shaking his head, the IceWing led his companions back into the village, heading for Riptide's residence. "We should be able to let you stay the night."

"Thank you, Winter." Moon's soft voice called.

It wasn't long before the four were back in the town. Many dragons were ducking into their homes for the night, though as they got to the SeaWing's abode, some were waiting outside. His eyes better against the evening sun, Winter was the first to identify them. The closer was a MudWing, a specific sister one. As for the other, it was a colleague of his, a SandWing female. His pace quickened some, his scavenger desires running through him some as he was interested to pick her brain on the field discoveries she went out on. He paused long enough to get Riptide to speak with Moon and Qibli, as well as hear Umber and Sora meeting and leaving before he dogged the SandWing female, who smiled and pulled out a scroll for him. There were quite a few she had, so he helped her put them in the study room before spending hours going over it all.

The IceWing awoke suddenly, jerking himself. He blinked sleepily as he yawned, stretching his feet upwards as he laid on his back. Mind wondering why he awoke, he just laid there, closing his eyes as he attempted to drift back to sleep. Then, he heard footsteps outside of the building. Eyes opening, Winter turned himself back over, scrolls falling whichever way they wanted from their resting on his body. Glancing over, he saw his companion fast asleep, so the IceWing wondered who would be up at this time of night. Padding his way over, he peeked out.

Much to his surprise, it was Umber, softly walking out of the camp. Confused, Winter followed after the MudWing. Through the forest once more, his mind racing while also trying to shake the fog of sleep. He was worried about his friend as he watched him trek between the trees. Though another part of his tired head spoke of how fluid the other dragon moved, swishing tail and swaying flanks almost hypnotic enough to lull him back to sleep. It did leave him more dazed as he stood there a moment or two, ready to flop himself down and rest more but he didn't dare. Instead, he shook himself and nearly scrambled to catch up.

Eventually, the IceWing did catch up. Umber had finally settled upon a rock. Looking around, it took a minute for Winter to realize that this was where they had met for the first time in a long while. It felt like a year ago and yet...it wasn't all too long ago admittedly. A few months? It didn't matter, Winter's life had turned around so much because of Umber that time seemed...unimportant.

"You can come up here you know."

The IceWing tensed up as that steely gaze settled on him, though it grew softer. Nervous, the shaking Winter did indeed get up on the boulder, settling down a bit from the MudWing. Umber sighed and scooted closer to him. The IceWing's heart leapt to his throat, face turning blue. Great ice dragon, what was going on with him?

"Winter..."

Winter hummed, unsure if his voice was stable enough to respond.

"I'm going back to Pantala."

"WHAT?!" The IceWing reared back, flabbergasted. Umber was leaving? For a whole other continent?! "Why? Did I do something wrong?!" Winter was aghast as he tried to think of anything he'd done to drive the other away.

The MudWing sighed, his whole body sagging down. "Sora and I are to be guides for emissaries, given we are the only ones here who have been over there."

"O-oh..." The IceWing flushed as he looked away, embarrassed he had reacted so...intently. Swallowing the sudden lump in his throat, blinking a few times to keep the wetness in his eyes, he asked, "When do you leave?"

"In a week. I'll be leaving the camp sooner to prepare for ship travel."

Ah, right. Ships. A recent construct that allowed voyage across large waters without flying. It was a piece of genius and yet, even with a scientific mind like his own, Winter hated it right now. He hated that Umber was leaving, hated that there was no one else to do the task, hated that he was losing one of his best friends. He didn't even realize he was crying until he felt a talon lightly rubbing against his cheek.

"Don't cry Winter. It doesn't suit you."

The IceWing sobbed once, voice a mess. "You just came back into my life, and now you have to leave."

The MudWing draped his wing over Winter, something that both made his tears fall more and make him lean into the strange warmth. He didn't think he had ever been in close contact with a warm body before and most who did were discomforted by the chill his kind emitted. Strangely, Umber either didn't care or didn't mind as he held onto the sobbing IceWing. It was one of the few times Winter had ever shed tears and it hurt worse than anything, even more than when Moonwatcher had chosen Qibli. Everything good in his life was always seemingly taken away from him.

He could feel claws lightly running along the back of his paw, small gestures meant to soothe him. Tear stained face glanced up at the somber look on the MudWing's face, which grew even softer as he leaned in and nuzzled him gently. The IceWing pressed himself closer and placed his head under Umber's. It was undignified to have comfort like this, yet the strong beat of the MudWing's heart was quite soothing to the distressed Winter. Why was he so affected by all of this? He didn't know but he spoke quietly, in a raspy voice.

"Can we stay here for a while?"

"Anything you want, Winter." With that, the two stayed there for a while longer, letting the moons shine their light down on them. Eventually, they made their way back to get what sleep they could in their home. Their home. The IceWing pondered that before he fell asleep, knowing this place would never feel right without Umber there with him.

Four days. That was how long it had been since that night with Umber. A day and a half already since said MudWing had left Winter all alone. For the few days together, Umber had refused to leave the IceWIng's side, being there as much as possible. It seemed like a blur, the two having what fun they could together, doing chores together, everything. Then on the third day, Sora had come and took the MudWing away. Winter shook his head, sighing as he tried to write about the new details of scavenger courting, knowing he couldn't blame Sora for Umber leaving. It was just...unfair. The IceWing had just gotten to a point of saying he may not be broken and now a part of him was gone.

"Winter, are you ok?" His SandWing colleague asked him.

Faking a small smile, he responded, "Never better." His talons lightly flicked along the scroll, going back to his notes before his mind started to wander again.

"You don't seem alright." She said as she scrawled out her own clues and notes and research. Sighing, Winter dipped his talons in ink and slowly went from notating to letting his claws do as they will without really thinking. Umber didn't know when he would return, but promised that he would come back as soon as he could. The MudWing had also told the IceWing to not wait for him, to live the life he saw fit to. Winter wasn't entirely sure what that meant but he knew roughly that Umber didn't want him to mope or break down again, instead to keep moving forward and doing what he desired. The IceWing just had to figure out that part of his life.

After the MudWing left, he'd not really left the scavenger holding area, hoping to get as much work as he could done to distract himself. Even Riptide had come by and checked in on him, saying the Winter looked rough since Umber had left. Well, of course he looked rough! He'd just lost a friend to thousands of miles of land and sea all because some dignitaries wanted a Pyrrhian guide? He supposed he couldn't blame them, he was sure if he had still been sheltered and conditioned as a prince, he'd be the same. Letting out a sigh, the IceWing came back into focus to see his claws had drawn a sketch instead of using words. Figures, he wasn't thinking of scavengers like he should. About to pull out another sheet, he took a second glance at the image and paused, feeling his heart starting to pound in his chest.

Usually, everything he'd drawn had involved Moon. This image did involved moon, or rather, a moon. With a tattered and beaten dragon resting upon a rock outlining it. Normally drawing what was on mind was not uncommon but the level of detail he'd taken, even in just a sketch, made Winter realize this was much more than just idle talons and wandering mind. There was no mistaking the burn on the nose, the scar over the eye, missing tail pieces and hole-riddled wings. He'd drawn Umber the way he had appeared the first night.

The IceWing's body trembled, feeling his heart pounding in his chest and throat and head. He gripped the last of them as he butterflies filled his stomach as he thought back to all the time he'd spent with the MudWing. How he had loved seeing every curve and angle of Umber, thinking he'd make a wonderful subject for an art piece. How smooth and elegant his fighting and flying was. His face flushing as he recalled the time he'd been pinned down beneath the older yet smaller dragon. How it felt like his heart had been wrenched out when the MudWing had left. How? How had he not seen it? How had he not realized it?!

Winter was in love with Umber.

Now the holder of his heart was preparing to go to another continent. Away, so far away. Without knowing how the IceWing felt. Great ice dragon, he'd been such a stupid fool. Tears streamed down his face as he could do nothing but wallow in his own misery. It was over, he'd lost his chance. Then a light cough made him look up with red eyes.

"It may not be my place to say this," the female SandWing said, "But you should go."

"Go?" His voice cracked on the single word. Moons he was a mess.

"After him. He can not stay, but you can go."

That made...so much sense. Was the ray of hope he had. "W-what about the scavengers?"

"I can look after them until I can get someone else here as well." She said, smiling. "Go get him, Winter. Find your happiness."

After that, the IceWing was a whirlwind of movement, snatching a seal-ton of ink and parchments and stuffing them into a bag as he practically dived out of the den and ran back to his house. Grabbing what little mementos and necessities he had in there, Winter barreled out and went for the food storage. Coming upon the RainWing in charge, his labored breathing did him no favors as he panted out his request.

"I need, provisions, for a few days."

Said dragon gave him a sidelong look as she said, "You know I can't do that Winter."

"Please! This is an emergency! I don't have time to-"

"Do it." A voice spoke over him, commandingly.

"Right away." The RainWing shifted colors as she went into the back. The IceWing turned to see Riptide there.

"Whatever it is you're doing must be important. I hope you know what you're doing Winter." The SeaWing said.

Delight and relief ran through Winter as he practically tackled Riptide in a wing and leg hug. "The most important thing of my life." Letting go, the IceWing turned serious for a moment. "I don't know when I'll return, so you may use my dwelling for anyone else."

The SeaWing nodded, a small smile gracing his face. "I'll miss you, Winter. You were a great dragon to have around."

A sad smile grace Winter's muzzle. "I'll see you again Riptide. Thank you for hosting me here." The RainWing returned and the IceWing placed it in his second bag. Shaking talons with the SeaWing one last time, Winter left and took to the air, straining his wings to take him to the coast as fast as he could. It would be tight and he'd have little time for rest or food as it was but he'd be damned if he missed this one chance he had!

The brisk sea air smelled strongly of salt. It wasn't new to Umber, but still was refreshing as he inhaled it. Sure, it would never beat the smells of his home but he could appreciate them nonetheless. Wiggling his talons upon the sand, he listened to the bird cries and the shouts of dragons as they worked on a pier to prepare the ship. The seaport had grown as of late, becoming a small town. He was certain it would continue to grow as more ships would be made for the trek over the ocean.

The MudWing sighed softly as he stared across the lapping waves. Just a week ago, he didn't think he'd be back here, heading over there again. He had a good life, living in the camp, with Winter. A frown creased his muzzle. Yes, he had fallen for the IceWing, but he had...minimized those feelings for Winter's own sake. It hurt to leave, yet there was nothing to be done about it. Even now, Sora's incident at the academy had repercussions. It didn't take much to have her do this and twist Umber around to it as well.

"Umber, are you coming?"

Turning, he grinned softly at Sora and nodded. The MudWing began walking towards her when she lifted her head and asked, "What's that?"

Looking back, Umber saw a white speck coming closer and closer. An IceWing? Here? Unusual. Sighing, he turned back to pad closer to Sora when she grew tense.

"Moons, he's coming right here!"

Glancing back, he saw she was right. The IceWing was angled right at them! An attack? It didn't matter as said dragon barreled right into the sand, kicking it up and making a furrow in the dunes as he skid to a halt. A low groan issued from him as the two MudWing siblings approached.

"WINTER?!" Sora exclaimed.

Umber's own muzzle parted in surprise. What in all of Pyrrhia was Winter doing here?! The IceWing slowly picked himself up, shaking sand off as best he could. He groaned again as he stood on wobbling legs. Rushing, the MudWing placed himself against Winter to help him stay up. A lot of weight shifted onto him as Sora began grabbing at the bags he had carrying with him.

"Winter, what are you doing here?" Sora asked.

"I wanted, to go, with you." His breathing labored and voice shaking, yet clear enough to hear this close.

Rolling his eyes, the Mudwing helped Winter forward to sit on stable ground, though the IceWing more so flopped and groaned again.

"Why on Pyrrhia do you want to go?" She asked.

"Research. Among other things." Winter's face flushed as he glanced at Umber. Other things? That was cryptic.

"Oooooooh." A knowing smile seemed to creep onto his sister's face. "I'll go make changes then. You should talk though!"

Giggling to herself, Sora took off. What in the world? The MudWing was completely lost already. Regardless, he needed to check on his friend.

"Are you alright Winter?"

"No. I haven't hurt this bad since I was a hatching learning to fight in the Ice Kingdom." He spoke sluggishly, seemingly half asleep.

"Are you ill?"

"Just exhausted."

"Why?"

"Spent most of the past two days and nights flying."

Eyes widening slightly before narrowing, he spoke in a low growl. "What foolishness would cause you to do that?"

Groaning a fourth time, Winter hauled himself up onto his rear end, grinning and flushed as he said, "You."

Confusion ran through the MudWing. Him? "Me?"

"When you left, I realized something Umber."

"That being?"

"I liked being around you."

More confusion. "I like being around you too?" It was true, but still. To come all this way for that?

The IceWing shook his head. "This is hard for me to say. I enjoy being around you, a lot. When you left, it felt like a part of me was missing."

"That's normal."

"No!" Winter was shaking his head. "No, it was much more than that. I had considered you a best friend by then-"

"You're a good friend too, Winter."

"Great ice dragon, I love you Umber." His muzzle opened to speak more but closed as he seemed to realize what he'd said. Umber watched his face turn blue as his own flush appeared. His own maw parted a few times in surprise and shock. Did...Winter just say that?

"Winter..."

"I-It's true!" The IceWing said quickly, huddling in. "I-I realized I h-had feeling for you. I c-couldn't let you ju-just leave without saying that!"

The MudWing had pushed his own aside for Winter. Now, here they were, the reverse happening like all that time ago when he'd confessed. His silence seemed to be panicking Winter, however.

"Y-you don't have to return them! You can tell me to go. I just needed to sa-" The IceWing was cut off as Umber moved forward and tilted his head, tongue dragging along Winter's lips. The flush before was even deeper now.

"I love you too, Winter."

A smile grew on the IceWing's face and grew wider as he started to laugh. Umber was a bit...off put to say the least. "Oh moons, I am relieved to hear that. I thought maybe you'd move on!" This time, Winter leaned forward and licked across the MudWing's snout. It was awkward, something new to the ex-prince, but was adorable in its own right. "I...don't know if this is forever, Umber. But...want to explore this. If you are willing?"

Umber smiled, not one of his small grins Winter had grown use to seeing, but a medium-sized one. True happiness shining through his own downtrodden heart. "I accept Winter." With that, the once more came together, this time their tongues met and the first true kiss of the two lovers bound them together in a way very little else could. They had their whole lives to figure out things and now they could do it together.
