CHAPTER 4: Anticipation

Between the potential of an angry bunny-woman who had been forced to wait, and the scent that permeated the room after their leaving, both Sarah and Decausus had been eager to depart the restaurant. So they left in a hurry, without apologizing or looking in the direction of anyone who might even resemble the woman and her family. Decausus had been relieved of two types of overwhelming pressure, and Sarah was completely soaked between her thighs, and the two were both embarrassed and grinning by the time they settled in the car.

"I can't believe we did that." Decausus panted, still oddly breathless from the combination of sexual release and the weight in his stomach. "I can't believe we -actually- did that."

Sarah's grin turned into a laugh as she twisted the key in their car's ignition. "Well you NEEDED it!" she exclaimed and pulled down on the shifter, to start backing them out of the parking space, "You shouldn't complain...!"

Her chiding made Decausus giggle a little too, "... Well, I'm not..." he told her, looking away, "... I was thinking maybe..."

"... Maaaaybe~?"

"... That maybe we could do it again in a different... maybe cleaner place?"

Sarah shook her head and reached over to tussle her lover's hair. "You're a pervert. Let's go." With that, she pushed up on the lever and the two rolled forwards, getting as far away from the parking lot and the restaurant as they could.

Half an hour later, though, their laughter and smiles had turned into nervous grins instead, as Sarah looked for a place in the packed parking lot of their town's hospital. Decausus could only watch the world pass by slowly, his view dominated by the imposing height and breadth of the hospital's exterior. Sick, elderly, pregnant, and injured walked and hobbled about as Sarah drove.

"Maybe... maybe we don't need to do this..." Decausus suggested in an unsure tone, frowning. "We've handled it well so far, right?"

Sarah shook her head, "Nuh-uh, mister." she denied. "You need to get this..." she reached over, and patted his bulging stomach, "... checked out. If it's nothing, then great! If it's something we need to worry about..."

Decausus gulped visibly. Sarah's palm ran up his chest, over his shoulder and down to take his hand.

"Then we'll handle it together." she added softly, her eyes still on the road. "I'm not going anywhere over something like this. Promise."

Decausus squeezed Sarah's hand a little, and spotted a parking place, amidst the tightly packed cars. "There...!" he said, pointing.

Sarah brought the car to a stop and looked in the rearview mirror and, seeing how no one was behind them, pulled the car's transmission into reverse, backed up a little, and then pulled into the spot. Satisfied, Sarah pulled the key out and the two stepped out of the car, with the white feline female locking it behind her by pressing her thumb to the key fob. Decausus waited for her at the rear of the car, nervously fidgeting his tail back and forth as people moved about and a car passed. No one, thankfully, seemed to notice his predicament, even if -he- was self-conscious about it. As he stood there, his heart beat kept rising, and every part of him told him it was 'time to run.' Time to get out of there, before he found out something terrible or someone else found out how much a freak he turned out to be or...

Sarah could see his fear, and though it was unspoken, and she couldn't imagine what was going through his head right then, she knew one thing; That her husband needed support, and that she'd get support from him when -she- needed it. So she reached out, and took his hand.

"Hey." Sarah whispered, "Come here..."

Decausus's ears flicked backwards as he turned towards Sarah, who in turn pulled her husband into a long, nuzzling embrace. At first, Decausus did not know what to do, but after a few moments, wrapped his arms around her back and held on for dear life.

Sarah had a strange feeling about it all. Decausus had rarely shown any kind of vulnerability, something that had bothered her a little throughout their time together. He was thick-headed sometimes, knocked down often, but always got back up quickly. Some things that he had been through should have knocked him down for months, but he seemed to recover in days, or hours. This was new, and she hated to admit it to herself, but she liked this side of him a little. It was nice to know he felt like he could turn to her, and nice to be turned to. She felt like, in those moments, that he respected -her- strength.

"Need me to carry you?" she asked with a small grin.

Decausus shook his head, "No, I think I've got it." he told her, pulling away, but keeping hold of her hand, "... Let's go find out how screwed up I am."

"Shuddu~up." she commanded playfully as he took the lead, heading for the hospital, showing "I bet we're gonna find out that you're just a bunch more interesting than I thought."

Decausus smiled, and felt confidence return to him, even if just a little.

==Thirty Minutes Later==

Doctor Riima was an older, enthusiastically fun mouse-woman with graying hair and a soft, kindly face who Sarah had known, and been seeing, for most of her life. Decausus had only known about her since about six months ago, but had met her with Sarah when Sarah had revealed just how many kids she was likely to conceive in a single litter. However, Sarah had assured the Doctor that they weren't really planning for kids just yet.

"A lot has apparently changed in the past half-year..." Doctor Riima considered as she looked at Sarah's chart with a smile. "I had a feeling you wouldn't be able to hold out long. You're just like your father. I remember the look on your mother's face..." However, there was little time for reminiscing at that moment, since Sarah was apparently waiting for her with her husband. Walking down the white, clean halls of the family ward, she stopped at the reception desk. "I'm ready to see them now." she told the receptionist, who promptly stood up and opened the glass sliding window and called out Sarah and Decausus' last name. Doctor Riima waited with her signature, 'understanding' smile, expecting to see Sarah either at least part of the way through her pregnancy already, or more than half-way, but was caught off guard when she was greeted to the sight of a slim-waited Sarah... and the oddly bloated middle of her husband instead. A surprised frown crossed her snout for a moment before she caught herself and cheerily greeted them.

"Hello, how are you two doing today?" she asked, mostly addressing Sarah, who seemed more 'available' mentally than her clearly embarrassed husband. "I hope everything is okay~"

Sarah reached up to scratch at her jaw nervously as well, which did not fill Doctor Riima with confidence.

"We... aren't sure if we're okay, actually, which... is why..." Sarah began.

Doctor Riima nodded and took her hesitance as a sign that whatever was going on, it was best discussed in private.

"Don't worry, Sarah, Decausus, let's go talk in one of the examination rooms. Right this way~" she said cheerfully, not blind at all to the 'lowness' of Decausus' middle. There were a number of different potential reasons for that, but none of them really fit. Decausus didn't seem to be in immediate pain, and he wasn't exactly known for being... calm around needles, or silent when he was sick. Drawing on what she knew of him, including that one time he'd had the flu and come in with Sarah for treatment and examination, there weren't a whole lot of explanations which made sense, so she had to trust that they'd have a good explanation for his state when they were behind closed doors.

It did not take long to reach the examination room, and on the way she managed to get the majority of the more boring information from them both, stopping only once to weigh Decausus and get his blood pressure. The former was worrying, compared to his previous weight, well over fifteen pounds extra, but she was relieved to see his blood pressure was only slightly elevated.

"Blood pressure mostly normal, so that's good." she announced happily to Decausus, "A bit heavier than usual huh?" she asked, "Have you experienced sudden weight-gain?"

"You could say that..." Decausus muttered.

That concerned her, but his next words concerned her more as he looked up to her and shrugged with a bashful, slight smile.

"Within the past few hours actually."

Doctor Riima raised her eyebrows and looked over to Sarah, who only looked away, expressing a similar embarrassment. Something in the back of Dr. Riima's mind clicked, and visions of Sarah's parents' first visit to the clinic after promising not to get pregnant surfaced again. They had the same expressions!

"... We... O-kay. You two, let's go and talk about this in the examination room. Now."

== In the Examination Room ==

Decausus settled onto the examination table as he had been instructed. Sarah stayed by his side as Doctor Riima closed the door.

"I'm only going to ask this once." Doctor Riima began, "... did you two try to have kids?" she asked.

Sarah nodded. Decausus nodded too. Neither of them would look at her.

"... Then why is it that you... Decausus... are the one sporting the belly?" she asked, "You said this all happened today?"

More nodding from them both. Doctor Riima sighed, and squeezed the bridge of her nose. "... Okay, so none of that makes sense. You're a guy." she said, pointing at Decausus, "So far as I've been made aware, you're not physiologically different from most guys... which means something else must be going on." she considered. "What were you two doing... during sex?"

Sarah chimed in first, "It wasn't anything abnormal!" she insisted, "We were... just... I dunno, doing it? I was on top..." she shrugged.

"No ropes or odd poses?"

"No!" Decausus and Sarah both said in unison.

"Any pain?"

"During sex?" Sarah asked.

"No, I mean, before. Or in general lately?"

Decausus piped up, "Actually the sex felt great...?" he said, as if trying to remember.

"Focus."

"No, none at all. It doesn't even hurt right now...!" he told her. "It feels... well, it just doesn't hurt."

Doctor Riima closed her eyes, "Okay... so... " she turned away from them to think for a moment. "No pain? At all?"

"None." Decausus reiterated.

The doctor put her hand to her chest and thought a little more.

"How much of a mess was there after you two had your fun?"

Sarah answered that one, "None, actually." she said, blushing a little.

"... and you're not carrying any of it now?"

"Maybe a little."

"Which means the rest..." the Doctor mused, "... is probably inside Decausus."

Silence filled the room. Doctor Riima sighed again and turned back around to face them both. Neither of them looked away this time, both of their gazes affixed to Doctor Riima, waiting for answers. Answers which she had a hunch at, but did not have sufficient evidence to support. Yet.

"Okay. I have a theory, but I need to run some tests. Since this is a bit of an emergency, I want you both to get out your insurance information and give it to the front desk. While you do that, I'm going to get you set up for an MRI. While the dye settles into your system, which we'll administer soon, we'll take you to Imaging and get an ultrasound done on your midsection. The two together should give us at least an idea of what's going on in there..." Dr. Riima explained.

"... What's the theory?" asked Decausus.

"I'd rather not jump to conclusions yet." Doctor Riima said, "... let's just do the tests and if you're still not in pain afterwards then you can go home and we'll have the results tomorrow. We'll know a lot more by then."

Decausus and Sarah accepted the answer, though Doctor Riima felt for them. They'd come for answers and she was giving them the runaround. It was always hard to call when someone had an issue; Whether or not to give them the theory or to make them wait. Now was one of the times to make them wait.

== In Imaging ==

It had taken a lot of effort in the phlebotomist's office not to freak out as they took blood samples, ran them through a short gamut of tests, then injected him with a bunch of blue dyes. Fortunately, Sarah held his hand the entire time. He hated needles with a passion. Hated them with all his heart, but he also knew this was necessary, even if he hissed through his teeth a little at their invasion every time. They told him it would take thirty minutes to an hour for the stuff to get everywhere it needed to in his body to work well on the MRI. He took their word for it, and was ushered away by Doctor Riima, followed by Sarah, to a new room labeled "Ultrasound 03" above the door frame in big, block lettering.

Decausus laid back on the table, just like before.

"Pull up your shirt." said the technician. Doctor Riima stood behind the tech, at Sarah and Decausus' request. He felt safer, somehow, with the support of two people he knew. Sarah's twitching tail, however, let him know that she was agitated too. Somehow, that made him feel better. "Alright. It's going to be cold. Fair warning."

The tech held out a plastic tube of clear-gray solution, and squeezed. Decausus gasped, his breath catching a little in his chest as the gel collected on his middle. Staring down at the bulge of his middle and the impersonal technician, he felt like the hand which reached out to start rubbing the stuff in was imposing, and even a little frightening.

"W-wait...!" Decausus cried out softly, holding up his hand to stop the tech, "... Can... I'd feel a lot better if either Doctor Riima or Sarah did it..." he told the tech, thumbing over to his wife, "... It's not personal, I... It's just..."

The tech seemed to understand and nodded, closing his eyes. "Go get a pair of gloves." directed the tech, looking to Sarah. Decausus saw Sarah jump a little, as if she had been deep in thought. He felt guilty all of a sudden for putting that burden on her, but she shook herself visibly out of whatever ruminations she had been indulging in, and retrieved the gloves as instructed. As she returned with them, putting them on, she gave Decausus a small smile.

"It's okay." her expression told him, "I understand."

Then she smirked for but a brief moment, and a mischievous glint flashed in her eyes. She was thinking something playful.

Fortunately for them both, whatever Sarah was thinking stayed in her head, and she very softly, avoiding anything that might 'set him off' spread the messy goop around all over Decausus's swollen, rounded middle. He could see in her eyes though, as she 'worked' that she was enjoying this in a way, her pupils rounding out almost completely as she looked through him and massaged the stuff into his thin bellyfur. As soon as she was done, the tech reached out to start running the 'wand' across his body. Sarah shot the tech a warning look.

"This part -I- have to do. We need accurate data. This isn't a vanity visit."

Sarah almost spoke up, but Decausus grabbed her hand, getting some of the goop on his own palm. She looked to him, frowning, eyebrows furrowed in worry and concern. He shook his head, then nodded to the tech. The sensation was... unpleasant from the tech. He knew it was necessary, but he felt like they were being a bit rough, pushing down on the bulge more than Deca felt was necessary; Where Sarah's soft hands had almost (almost) been arousing, this was just borderline painful against his fur. So, when the procedure was complete, and the tech leaned back, still staring at the screen and the images that had been saved and formed through the software the hospital used, he was relieved.

"Alright. Get Decausus cleaned up and then we'll be off. I'll be waiting outside, where we can discuss the MRI procedure. By the time we're done, the dyes should have settled in, and we can get you in and out in no time."

Decausus wiped himself clean, with some help from Sarah, and then they were off again.

Everything felt like a blur; It was as if he wasn't really there, and if it weren't for Sarah's hand in his...

... well, he might have just floated away, dye and all.
