Evening

Alexander winds down for the evening.

Just a short thing I wrote for fun. Prompted by an adopt I got.

The evening air came into the car through the driver's open window, warmed by the setting sun's rays. After a good session in the gym, Alexander had little interest in adding any more heat to his already warm body. So he rolled the window up and turned on the air conditioning. The streams of cold air that came from the vents tickled the brown bull's furry forearms, and ruffled his already messy hair. Paying this no mind, he signalled in preparation for merging into the other lane. The old car hummed pleasantly as he sped up slightly, pulling in front of another car that had pulled back to let him in. Raising his arm in thanks, he continued on.

Looking up at the sky for a moment, Alexander saw that the late afternoon's sun was soon to be covered with a thick layer of clouds, rolling in from the distance. He checked to make sure all the windows were closed, then slowed the car down to a stop as he reached a red light. Taking this opportunity, he turned his eyes back towards the stormfront. Summer storms were always very strong in his experience. And while this one looked relatively harmless now, he was sure he'd be glad to be home instead of driving when it arrived.

The light turned green, and he was off again. A few minutes later, he was turning into his neighborhood. The main road ran back into what seemed to be woods when seen from without. Past a few dozen feet, though, several branching streets broke off and carved their own ways through some gentle hills. The houses were small but well tended, and most had only a small lawn. More trees could be seen rising up behind them, branches stretching out over the back yards.

Taking one of these side roads, Alex arrived at his house. It was tucked back in a far corner of the neighborhood, near the end of one of the street. He turned up into the driveway and, opening the garage, pulled in. He made sure he was far enough in, then he turned off the car.

Stepping up into the house, he made sure to close the garage before closing the door behind him. On his way to his bedroom, he pulled his shirt off. Rubbing his sore chest and stomach, he tossed the sweaty shirt into the clothes basket just inside the room. A moment later, his shorts joined the, leaving him in his sky blue briefs. From there, he went just down the hall to the bathroom, scratching at his lower back as he went.

After locking up behind him, he sighed happily as he pulled off his underwear, dropping it by the sink. His cloven grey hooves clacked on the tile as he stepped over to the shower, and leaning in turned on the water. Once the water had grown hot enough for his liking, he stepped into the large cubicle and slid the glass door closed behind him. He ran his hands under the water for a moment, then stepped the rest of the way under.

For a long few minutes, Alex enjoyed the heat of the water. It ran through his hair and down his body, following the lines of his muscles from his shoulders to his hooves. He ruffled his hair, spraying the shower walls. Then, after leaning out of the shower to grab a washcloth, he scrubbed himself down with soap, rinsed, and then shampooed his hair and the tuft of hair on his tail.

Once thoroughly rinsed, he got as much water out of his fur as he could with his hands, then retrieved a towel from the rack and started drying. As big as he was, he used a new towel every time he showered. After he'd gotten as dry as he could hope to, he stepped out of the shower. He wrapped the towel around his waist - it only reached the tall bull's knees - picked up his discarded briefs, and returned to his room.

There, he dropped the used underwear and towel into the basket with his day clothes and, naked, stepped over to his dresser. Getting out a fresh pair of briefs, these dark green, he slipped them on. They were followed by some soft pajama shorts and a loose t-shirt - he couldn't get comfortable wearing tight clothing in bed.

Taking the basket of clothing with him, he went out into the living room and through into the kitchen and laundry room. He got the washing machine going, then made himself some oatmeal. Adding a whole sliced banana to the bowl, he sat himself down in the living room to wind down. He pulled up the latest show that had caught his fancy, and tucked in to his oatmeal.

About halfway through the episode, he heard the garage opening again. A few moments later, he could hear it closing loudly as the door to the garage opened and his housemate stepped in. Yawning, the little ferret set her bag on the kitchen table, stretched her arms way up, then rested her hands on her head. Alex looked over from the TV, smiling at her. She smiled tiredly back, and started walking towards the hall.

"Hey, Kate." he said, reaching over to touch her shoulder.

"Hey, 'lex." she said, patting his head as she went by. "Long day. Gotta shower."

"'Kay." he said, looking away from the TV again to watch her shuffle down the hall to the bathroom.

When Kate reemerged half an hour later, fur still a little damp, she was in her pajamas and wrapped in a pink bathrobe. She came around the couch and sat down heavily next to Alex. Propping her feet on his knees, she looked at the television.

"Whatcha watching?" she asked. She pulled a brush out of her robe pocket and started pulling it through her long brown hair.

"Avatar."

"Cool."

As they idly watched the cartoon, Kate eventually scooched over to him, and laid her head on his lap. Alex shifted slightly, and started scratching her behind one of her soft, velvety ears.

A few minutes later, she pulled herself further up so she could curl up in the crook between his arm and torso.

"Mmm." she said. "Warm."

He smiled, then taking a blanket that was laying over the arm of the couch, draped it over them.

After about an hour, Alex noticed that she'd fallen asleep. Her pointed snout twitched slightly as she quietly snored. Laughing softly, he paused the show and turned off the TV. Gently, so as to not wake her, he scooped the little ferret up in his arms and carried her to her room. With one hand, he pulled back her bed's covers, keeping her steady in his other arm. Setting her down, he made sure her pillow was in a good spot, then pulled the blankets over her.

He stepped quietly out of the room, and closed the door behind him. He went to the bathroom to brush his teeth, then he went to his own room to settle in for the night. The sheets were cool, and the soft blankets provided a comforting weight over his tired body. After he'd gotten his pillow into just the right spot, he sighed as he let himself relax into the bed. Before long, his breathing had slowed.
