*Chapter 1: Poor judgement *

Rain pattered outside Rebecca's Jeep, and lightning flashed in the distance. she neared the exit road for Mount Massive Asylum. She was almost giddy with excitement, not a week ago she had received an anonymous email about sickening experiments being performed on the patients as well as the shadowy corporation funding it.

Murkoff, the corporation that she had tried time and time again to get dirt on, every time failing. Too little evidence. Or so they said. But if this panned out....

She had to go.

Not only could this be her big break, it could finally take down Murkoff...and maybe, just maybe get her a nice high paying job in a rival corporation.

A sign came into view and the radio let out a shill chirp of static that brought her back to reality.

Slowly, she turned into the access road, the dark outside her car seeming to close in around her. Drawing her further in.

Large wrought iron gates loomed out of the darkness ,framed from behind by the lights of the asylum and flanked on both sides by high, spike tipped stone walls.

As if expecting her the gates swung open, her head lights glinting off the rusted metal.

_Strange. Who had opened the gates? Why had they just let Waltz in here? _

It didn't matter. Parking her car by the security booth she grabbed the manilla folder off her passenger seat. Inside held a printout of the email that had brought her here.

Subject: TIP/ Illegal activities at Murkoff Psychiatric Systems

You don't know me. Have to make this quick. They might be monitoring.

I did 2 weeks of software consult at Murkoff Psychiatric Systems' facilities in Mount Massive. All sorts of NDA's im breaking right now but seriously, fuck those guys.

Terrible things happening here. Don't understand it, don't believe half the things i saw. Doctors talking about Dream therapy going too deep, finding something that had been waiting for them in the mountain. People are being hurt and Murkoff is making money.

It needs to be exposed.

She folded the email up and placed it in her jacket pocket.

Retrieving her camera from the seat next to her and loading fresh batteries into it, checking the new night vision mode and panning it around her Jeep, she began her intro.

" Hello fans, it's your favourite investigative journalist,Rebecca Upshur, and do I have a treat for you today!

I am here, just outside Mount Massive Asylum where, apparently, some pretty sickening shit is going down."

She panned the camera out her windshield, the rain distorting the image of the still Asylum, the large brick building reminded her of Bran castle in romania. She turned the camera around and set it on the dash centring herself in frame.

Truth be told very few of her fans watched her Stream for news, most watched to see her. As flattering as she might have found it the creepy and sometimes sickening comments were...off putting to say the least. her shapely waist, wide hips and double D breast gave her a nice figure, yes. But her viewers could at least control themselves! It was a rare occurrence that anyone wanted actual details.

She was hoping this case would change that.

She shook her head and continued with her intro " Apparently the corporation that runs this place is making its money experimenting with "dream" therapy" she stated as she put on her jacket. " and according to my source they are using the asylum as a front for the experiments and the patients here for their subjects. Today we are going out if that's true."

The brown furred canine retrieved her camera and stepped out into the night.

The rain had eased up during her intro but she doubted it would hold off long. As she turned to face the asylum the butterflies in her stomach dropped dead. Murkoff had a long track record of disguising profit as charity, and they were damn good at hiding any evidence to the contrary. Her numerous cold cases were a testament to that.

Shaking herself,She made her way across the small cul-du-sac and up the stairs to the front door. Before her sat three heavily armoured trucks, not swat models either, but Murkoff Private security force.

_ Explains why the radio cut out, but why was it so...deserted looking. _

Approaching the front door a cold breeze cuts across the overgrown lawn making her wish she had worn a little more than a white T-shirt, jeans and a combat jacket.

The front door was fairly unguarded and not really that secure looking either.

The door was wood with full length frosted glass windows. Yet when she tried opening them she found them to be very sturdy.

_Yeah, OK. Probably wasn't going to be that easy _

Rolling her eyes she began to search for another way in.

Following the small road to the left of the building she found a bent gate, the wrought iron bent inward at the bottom left, just big enough to fit through.

Crouching down she dragged herself through.

The gate brings her into what appears to be a small courtyard.

Dead trees lined the outside, several small overgrown planters making a neat isle in the center of the yard. To the left a small fountain sitting stagnant and neglected.

Not used much, clearly or...under renovation!

A large set of scaffolding wrapped itself around a corner of the building leading up to the second floor.

Ascending the ladder of the scaffolding the wind began to pick up again, swirling through trees, and howling like distant wraiths. As she made it to the top the rain began again.

Quickly as she could she searched for an open window, finding one, a broken one she quickly entered the building.

As she entered the light flickered and burst with a small pop.

_OK, guess that night vision will come in handy after all _

Despite most canines having decent night vision Rebecca's had recently modified her camera with a Catseye 3 infrared night vision system. Allowing much better recording in dark situations and the ability to see better through the screen.

The room she had entered was what appeared to be a visitation room, or what had been one. The chairs were scattered about the room, broken glass and... is that blood?

A little taken aback Rebecca knelt to examine the floor. A large...burst? Splatter? Blood covered much of the floor looking as if someone had been violently thrown and dragged along the ground.

Taking a shaky breath Rebecca glanced back toward the window.

_ ok this might be a little more than i bargained for. This is...a little more than any other case. All I was hoping to get was evidence of abuse of the patients, maybe some footage of a test but not...this. I should..._ she caught herself before she could finish her thought.

_NO this exactly what we came for hard evidence of illegal activity at Murkoff. A murdered patient? There is no way ANY of Murkoff's lawyers, no matter how well paid, could dispute this! _

With shaky and misguided judgement Rebecca stands and faces the partially ajar door leading deeper into the facility.

You can do this Rebecca! Time to take out Murkoff once and for all!

And with that last terrible reason, she made her way across the room and through the door.
