Usually, zoos were kind of depressing for Evan. The kobold loved big and powerful animals so very much, and watching them lounge around behind glass windows and iron fences was strangely sad to the kobold. But, there happened to be one exhibit, and one creature in particular, that kept Evan coming back to this zoo time and time again. Balu, the prized orca and most famous creature that this zoo had to offer. Every time Evan came to his enclosure, the orca would swim up and greet him...there was a kind of connection there, even though it was so limited from its setting. It was a windy and warm Thursday night. Evan had been planning this for weeks now, taking plenty of visits to the zoo and figuring out how he would be able to sneak in, preferably after hours. Evan was very short and small, as kobolds often were, and in this situation, it was certainly something that he could use to his advantage! And as he stood at the closed gate to the zoo, padlock wrapped around the ornamental iron doors that were usually wide open, the kobold felt so many different emotions swirling around in his head. The uncertainty of whether he would be able to do this. The consequences if he got caught. The other, potentially dangerous animals he could run into...but all those emotions were overwhelmed by the thoughts of what he could do with Balu once all those restrictions were removed. And it was those thoughts that eventually propelled the kobold to start climbing up that fence, the little lizard clambering up the wood and iron to the best of his ability. There were a few times Evan thought he would fall, or panicked because he thought he was making too much noise; but, at the end of it all, he dropped down on the other side of the fence, mostly unharmed, though a little bit scraped up from the rough nature of what he was doing. But he was intact. And now, he had the whole zoo laid out in front of him. It was time to find Balu.

Evan had been here plenty of times, obviously. He knew the layout of the zoo like the back of his hand. But, navigating it in the dark, and in a safe way? That was another matter entirely. The kobold had brought along a map to streamline the process a little bit, along with the flashlight on his phone...but it would still be a challenge to navigate, regardless! Evan spent quite a while just stumbling around in the dark, belly to the ground whenever he heard something that could potentially even be vaguely threatening...it definitely made this whole thing take quite a bit longer than it could have, but Evan didn't want to take any chances! If he got caught, there was no way he'd be able to pull off something like this again...

And so, the kobold painfully inched his way through the quiet zoo, in the complete darkness and silence of night...of course, some of the nocturnal animals were rather raucous, but that actually played to Evan's advantage in a way. The more chaos and noise, the easier it would be for him to slip in undetected...and the fact that the zookeeping staff was obviously reduced during the night time! After about 10 or so minutes, the kobold had managed to make his way towards the aquarium section of the zoo. And, after a few more minutes of scampering around in the darkness, he was there. Evan walked past the glass window that gave visitors a view of Balu's tank, and instead headed up a small flight of stairs at the end of the hallway to a door - a door that Evan knew didn't even have a lock on it. He'd managed to see the doorknob from both sides, and knew there was no sort of locking mechanism or keyhole. Yet, even with this information, the kobold was still nervous as he reached for the knob. There was a part of him thinking of all the crazy things that could happen; a motion sensor, or an alarm hooked up to the door that triggered if it was opened after hours. Things that would be a bit crazy for a door in an aquarium to have, but it wasn't exactly the rational part of Evan's brain thinking all these up!

So, the satisfaction that washed over Evan as he reached for the door knob and felt it click as he pulled the door open was palpable. The door creaked a little bit as Evan opened it up, and that made the kobold jump a little bit, but once he stepped through the doorway and actually shut it behind him...holy crap, the gravity of what he had managed to accomplish slammed into him like a truck. He was really all alone with Balu now! He had done it! Now, he just needed to get the orca's attention...

The kobold fumbled around in the darkness for a light switch he had seen on the wall before, before he eventually made purchase. Evan was halfway in the tank when Balu started moving, the kobold just hanging off the side and watching as the orca turned belly-side up.
