#2 of Short Stories

I wrote this piece to better understand dialogue in texts as well as writing from different perspectives to those I am used to.

This evening was going to be the start of something wonderful reasoned Evie. She had been asked to take Bailey to the University Netball team's clubbing social. Bailey was a brilliant player on the team, she always took the Wing Attack position while Evie played in Goal Defence.

She never knew what to wear for these events, cheetah spots were hard to match with so many things. First thing though was a warm bath to soothe out the boring day of lectures, Evie scrubbed her fur with orange scented shampoo enjoying the energetic scent far more than a relaxing lavender. The warm water washed away the stress of the day, leaving Evie fresh and renewed, ready for the event.

While her feline fur dried, Evie opened the fridge while clad in her dark purple towel. Her right paw lifted a half empty bottle of sweet white wine, checking that her housemates weren't around, she neglected a glass and took the bottle to her room. After all, glasses were for when she had company and it was much quicker to drink from the bottle. Evie struck a match and lit a wild berry scented candle, the warm flame slowly filling her room with the scent while she dried her fur. Evie began to inspect her claws while drinking from the bottle of wine, easily swigging down the first of what would be many drinks. It wasn't long before some music began blaring out of a small speaker on her desk, this was something many didn't understand but getting ready for a night out was just as much part of the night out as any event.

The choice now was what to wear, she placed a gold and leather bracelet on her left arm, the colours matching her fur. She soon put on a red off-the-shoulder top along with a pair of black skinny jeans. She smiled as the flame of the scented candle glinted off her bracelet. It was going to be a good night. Evie took a long drink from the bottle, it was always better to be a little bit buzzed before entering the club, kept the cold at bay too.

There was a chance that tonight Evie would muster up the courage to ask Bailey out. The cheetah smiled at the thought, an evening alone with Bailey would be exciting to be sure. She had put a lot of thought into this, first considering a whole range of activities before settling on going on shopping then for a meal. From there she planned to go for a couple of drinks and then head back to Evie's house to chat and watch a film. Though she had to get through tonight first. There was no point planning too far ahead after all. It was important to take it one step at a time.

A knock at the door sent a flutter through Evie's torso. The wine would take away part of her nerves though the base anxiety remained. Evie blew out her candle and ensured it was snuffed. It wasn't long at all before she opened the door, her eyes immediately looking over the person stood under her porch. To start with were those friendly azure eyes, bright with energy and excitement; the black tell-tale markings of a husky emphasising their vividness. Then the delightful athletic form of Bailey, standing at the same height as Evie. Bailey was clad in a form fitting leather jacket, a white top beneath it and dark blue skinny jeans. It was a fierce look, a practical look for dancing and having a great night out.

"Evening! You look lovely, Evie. I'll tell Mia to meet us here if that's okay?" Bailey asked, her voice as lively as her eyes.

"Hiya, thank you, no you look lovely too! Yeah she can come over that'll be great with the three of us!" Evie replied. Damn it, she thought. Mia was nice and fun of course, but why did she agree to that, this wasn't going as planned.

Bailey tapped her phone, sending a swift message. "Ah she'll be here in twenty, so how're you?" She asked, heading inside to the kitchen. Both women sat at the breakfast bar on stools.

"Yeah I've been good, went to the gym this morning, bumped into Hannah and Chris." Evie replied. "What have you been up- "

"Urgh, I can't imagine going to the gym with a guy, half the time that pair just stand in front of a mirror taking selfies. If they ask you to go with them, don't. It's so exhausting!"

Bailey reached into a reusable bag she had brought with her, pulling out a large bottle of lemonade, as well as a smaller bottle of vodka. She poured generous amounts of vodka into a pair of glasses before topping with lemonade.

"Oh, I know right, it's like we get it, you go to the gym." Evie took a glass and began to drink once more.

"So where are we going tonight exactly?" Asked Bailey, a smile brightening her face further after she swigged her vodka and lemonade.

"Well first of all, we're going to Royal. Having a few cocktails with the rest of the team then we'll be heading on to that club on the main street."

"Bright?"

"No, not that one. It's the one where Mia picked up that tall jaguar guy." Evie sipped her drink trying to recall the name that eluded her.

"Oh, you mean Rhythm. So, we're heading for a bit of R and R." There was a merry laugh from the husky as she poured herself another drink as well as topping up Evie's own. It was the little things like this that made the cheetah so enchanted by the canine. Bailey always encouraged everyone to have fun. A few people found it exhausting, but not Evie. Bailey had certainly helped her come out of her shell.

Another knock at the door interrupted the pair. Bailey bounded up to it, full of alcohol enthused energy. "Hello Mia, welcome to pre-drinks! Have a seat and get a drink."

Walking through the door was a petite corgi, meticulously well put together. She had immaculately kept claws that matched the rest of her perfectly put together style. The girl turned to Evie. "Oh, you look amazing tonight. Going out on the pull are we, Evie?"

Evie gave a soft smile. "Something like that." She spoke as she adjusted her bracelet then poured the canine a beverage.

Bailey's ears perked up. "Really, You're after someone, Evie?" A broad smile began to creep across her face as her eyes sparked with ideas and bad decisions.

The cheetah shrugged her shoulders. "Well you know, just thought I'd try it. But I don't really want jus-"

"Don't worry Evie. You've got the best wing-women on the team with you!" Mia gave an encouraging nod. "There's not a guy us three can't get."

"Mia, I think Evie's after a girl." Chuckled Bailey, rolling her eyes.

"Oh... ...OH! I see. Well don't worry, I'm sure that's just as easy, you're on a team; you look great. Some of our group get hit on all the time by girls!"

"Well, have either of you two been hit on by a girl before?" Evie asked, her curiosity piqued.

"I haven't, but Hannah did all the time before she met Chris. Gay bars are fun, often cheaper drinks too. Much more relaxed, like I'm not going to get hit on by some creepy guy I guess?" Mia started, briefly stopping to down half of her drink. "But I guess I'm not as attractive to girls as I am guys. I'd be quite flattered I think."

Evie finished her drink, by now feeling quite buzzed. After one more she would be ready for a good night out. Mia turned to Bailey, deciding to find out more about her. "So, what about you, ever had it happen?" as these words were spoken, Evie straightened up a little, her eyes lingering on the husky.

Bailey took another sip before looking fairly deep in thought. A smile emerged when she put her glass back down. "Well, yeah a couple have. Really nice girls too. It's fun to dance and all that, it was a bit of a laugh. But I am not into girls at all." There was a shrug of her shoulders. "I'm up for trying to meet a good guy tonight though!"

The words cut through Evie with a cold realism. Her entire plan came crashing down like a chandelier, smashing into shards of painfully sharp former possibilities. She hid her face into her glass, downing the alcohol that began to burn her throat. It was a cathartic pain. She placed her glass down with perhaps slightly more force than usual. Putting on a brave face, smiling at the other pair. "Right, let's get going, shall we?" She opened the door, letting the cool night air hit her form, it helped calm the storm of emotions that wracked her mind. The other two happily began to walk down the street, discussing what kind of guy they were after. Evie followed suit; it was going to be a long night.
