This is the start of something I'm going to be adding to here. Short stories about my two characters, Khyrsaraylynx and Selena Darkheart. This one is about Selena's beginnings.

~It was dark, cramped and she struggled hard against the hard encasing that enclosed her little world. Butting her head against the shell, the tiny dragon heard a muffled, answering tap from the outside. This sound, and her desire to be free, drove the little female to renew her attack against the hard surface.

~After a long time, the crack of light that spilt in was all she needed to force her wedge-shaped head through and out into the brightly lit world beyond.

~The first thing she did was blink. It was so bright after being in the dark for so long. Air, sweet and wonderful, slipped down into her lungs as she pushed herself out of the egg. Standing there, finally freed, wings dripping wet, the tiny dragon took a look around her new world.

~The face that greeted her was the most beautiful she had ever seen. Gleaming green scales, the color of summer grass, covered a huge reptilian head, while slender ivory horns jutted back and up away from eyes the color of the winter sky.

~Her mother.

~A smile alit those eyes as the mother dragoness lifted her lips slightly into a smile of welcome. As she did, she whispered a name.

~"Selena. Selena Darkheart."

~The giant dragoness pointed to a spot near her and immediately Selena's stomach rumbled in protest as she detected the scent of fresh blood. A carcass lay off to the side, only a bite missing from it. She looked at her mother, then bolted for the first meal of her life.

~After she had ate her fill, she turned about, hiccuping to find the mother dragoness regarding her with such a look of love, and something else. She didn't speak once after naming her daughter, but lowered her head down, exchanging caresses and licks, with her tiny daughter.

~Selena, sleepy after her first meal, settled down against her mother's warm side and curled up into a ball, giving a tiny gurgle of contentment as she tucked her head and fell asleep. Her mother curled around her, protectively, and laid her head down beside her daughter.

~Selena awoke to voices, one especially angry and heartbroken male one, and curled more against her mother. She pulled back with a start at the touch of the hard, ice-cold scales. She extended her head, pushing against the body, but no response came.

~Her mother was dead.
