The Life and Times of Soma Hikari

Chapter 3: First Date

The next morning was uneventful; I got up, got dressed and got on the bus. My head still hurt like hell though, once again I do not recommend hitting your head on a table, because it will hurt. Once again I couldn't sleep on the bus, the knowledge that I had an unofficial date with Haru this afternoon was equally exciting and scaring me. I was extremely nervous, but also strangely confident, besides all I was doing was showing her around town. It wasn't exactly a date, well in my mind it was, wasn't sure about what she thought of it as. Just as I was starting to wish I could read her mind the bus arrived at school once again and I departed, heading for my usual stop on the wall.

I arrived there to find Shade waiting for me a grin upon his face, almost like he was waiting for me to arrive.

"So I heard about yesterday dude, you're a lucky guy. Getting a head injury and a date all in one day" he laughed at his own stupid joke and I chuckled along with him as I sat down.

"Yeah, I guess I am, but I don't recommend getting a head injury as a way to pick up girls, even though it might work for you, since you're stoned off your ass 24/7 and probably wouldn't feel it" I said as I waved my hand in front of his face, making him almost fall off the wall.

"Dude! Don't do that!" He yelled as he tried to regain his balance on the wall "You know that screws with my mind man!"

"I know it does, why do you think I did it?" I said laughing, just then Haru walked over and sat beside me on the wall.

"Hey Soma, how are you?" She said smiling that beautiful smile of hers as Shade stared in pure shock.

"Not bad, just sitting here, waiting for the bell to ring" I said as I smiled back nervously, not sure how to approach this new situation, as I was waiting for a reply shade leaned over me and grinned.

"And I'm his best friend Shade" he said with that stupid stoner grin of his, the grin that makes you want to laugh, but yet look at him with pity.

"Um....Hi there, I'm Haru, nice to meet you" She said nervously, I'm pretty sure she smelled the smoke on his jacket, but then again who didn't, I chucked as I thought this making them both stare at me for a second.

Just then the bell started to ring, signaling the start of the day, Haru smiled happily at me before getting up.

"Well it was nice meeting you Shade, and I'll see you at lunch Soma" she said as she was walking off.

"Well looks like she likes you Soma" he said as he chuckled and got up, "I wonder why she seemed like she wanted to get away from me though?"

"Maybe it's because you smell like smoke, and act like an idiot" I said as I playfully pushed him "Why else do you think the girls avoid you?"

"I have noooooo clue" he replied as he began to stumble lazily toward the door, "I'll see you later, tell me how it goes dude"

I waved to him and then walked to class. Classes were always a bore for me. I guess that's kind of my curse, I've always been smart, so school just seemed like a time-waster to me, a place where I could sit around and learn nothing. I hoped the rest of life wasn't as boring as High School.

But eventually lunch period came, after making sure my shoes were tied, I walked to her table and sat beside her, making that pleasant small of lavender start to fill my nose again.

"Looks like you made it this time without injury" she said turning towards me with a grin on her face.

"This time I made sure my shoes were tied" I said before pointing to my jet black sneakers and laughing.

"Smart idea", she said and chuckled "So where are we going to go after school?"

"I just figured we'd walk around town, and maybe we could stop by the beach and just hang out" I said smiling happily

"That sounds nice" She said returning the smile "I've never been to the beach before, I lived in the city since I was a little girl and I've always wanted to go" Her tail wagged slightly as she looked into my eyes.

We finished our lunches while talking about random subjects and found we had a lot in common, music tastes, authors, movies, TV, hell she was even a pretty hardcore gamer and you know how hard it can be to find one of those.

After the bell rang I waited outside for her, full of excitement and anticipation for my first big date, I know I was just going to show her around town, but I had never taken a girl out before so give me a break. She finally walked up beside me and we started our tour of the town.

I showed her where all the stores were downtown, we looked around in a few. While we were in a jewelry store and she wasn't looking I picked up a small bracelet for her, it was silver and had small aquamarine gems upon it, I thought it looked good with her fur, and hoped I could give it to her later. She walked around the town with wonder in her eyes, not being used to such a small town, loving all the small shops and the fresh air and sunlight.

Eventually we arrived at the beach, and as soon as we got there she grabbed my hand and ran for the water, wanting to see the waves up close. I was dragged along for a second but eventually ended up running with her while we laughed and enjoyed the feel of the salty air blowing through our fur. She watched the waves in amazement, her beautiful eyes scanning the horizon as the sun began to set, giving the sky a pretty orange-pink glow.

"Soma, it's beautiful!" She exclaimed as the waves crashed against the shore "I didn't think it'd be anything like this, the sights, the sounds, the smells, it's like nothing I've ever imagined"

"I love the beach" I said happily "If we go up there we can have a perfect view of the sunset, if you want to see it" I replied as I pointed to a rock on the edge of the beach.

"I'd love to see it" she smiled as we began to walk towards the rock.

We climbed up to the top and sat beside each other as the sun sank lower in the sky in front of us, enhancing the beautiful colors. She rested her head on my shoulder and sighed happily as I slowly wrapped my arm around her.

"Hey Soma?"

"Yeah Haru?"

"I had a really good time today" She said as she looked up at me and smiled lovingly

"So did I" I said returning the smile and holding her tighter

"Can we do it again?"

"I'd love to, and hey I got you something today" I said pulling out the bracelet and handing it to her, the color of the sky reflecting off the silver

"Oh Soma, it's beautiful!" She said as her eyes lit up

"I'm glad you like it, I thought it'd be a nice surprise" I replied smiling happily

Just then she pulled my head down and kissed me on the lips as the stars began to come out, it was just for a second, but it was amazing! It was the most amazing feeling I had ever had in my life!

"W...w...what was that for?" I said blushing deeply as she smiled

"For being the nicest, most sweetest guy I've ever met" she replied and pushed me playfully

I smiled and we got up, sadly it was time for this amazing night to come to an end. I walked her home in the dark, her hand in mine and the light from the streetlights reflecting off her bracelet. We stopped outside her house and she kissed me again on her porch.

"Thank you for such a wonderful evening Soma" she said and smiled

"I...It was no problem" I said blushing, still not exactly used to kissing a girl yet. "I'll see you tomorrow"

"You sure will" she said as she started to walk inside. "Good night Soma"

"Good night Haru" I replied as I started to walk home, with a smile on my face and a song in my heart, tonight was the greatest day of my life, and somehow I knew things were only going to get better from now on.....
