I wrote this about 2 years ago when my depression began to set in.

I live in a world where nothing changes

No effort may slay the beast within.

There is no hope from above

Nor any promise from below.

Arms reach out from within

Reach out above and strangle hope

Reach out below and stumble resolve

Reach out betwixt and shackle strength.

Tears fall dry and silent from hollow eyes

Upon voiceless whispers whimpered into the night.

Does no one listen or can no one hear?

Look out upon this vast barren valley

Breathe in the vapors

Taste the rain.

Take a perilous step with broken sandals

Bask in the sun

Feel the pain.

Feel the crunch of sand beneath cracked weathered toes

Wander the desert

Circles again and again.

There is not much left within this hollow tomb

The candle of this soul gutters and shall burn no more.

A life wasted in remorse a future ruined with regret.

Body ravaged by gluttony

Mind starved by neglect

Fingers crushed without creativity

Heart putrefied by hate and anger.

I wander blind and fatigued

With a madness that silently and gleefully eviscerates.

All passion has bled from me

All joy has rotted away

Look out upon this vast barren valley

Breathe in the vapors

Taste the rain.

Take a perilous step with broken sandals

Bask in the sun

Feel the pain.

Feel the crunch of sand beneath cracked weathered toes

Wander the desert

Circles again and again.

I hear a voice calling out to me from ages bygone

A presence felt: ethereal, regal.

Faintly carried upon airless winds cold and stabbing

A voice that says:

Breathe a gentle sigh of relief

And carry your burden no more

Cast it upon my broad black back

And hoist yourself into my arms

Whisper your worries into my jackals ears

And let me bear you towards the light.

My child shall never be alone shall never be afraid shall never be naked

My child shall never be unloved shall never be thirsty shall never be cold

My child shall be free shall be whole shall be pure

My child shall be nourished shall be strong shall be vindicated

My child shall be

Reborn
