#2 of Primrose Valley

In Primrose Valley there is an abandoned manor on the other side of the river. No one goes there, no one can, not since the only bridge crossing the river was washed away decades ago. But that mansion has a history, one connected to powerful secret in this town.

There is magic in this world, and it is more powerful in Primrose Valley than almost anywhere else. Years ago an alakazam by the name of Dr. Glowdane attempted to find out why and to find a way to seize that power for himself. He discovered the magic was connected to something or someone in the forest the locals called the Twisty Woods. Yet, his attempts to research the forest and look for the source of magic suffered setback after setback.

But, he found something. A child within the forest who had strange powers. Clearly this child either had been exposed to the source of magic or perhaps even was it... And so Dr. Glowdane created a plan to capture this child of the forest and get the answers he wanted.Support on PatreonDonate a Ko-FiFollow on TwitterDiscord ServerGet the Official Calex Fan Club Shirt!StoriesByCalex.com

Dr. Glowdane's Personal Research Notes

March 3, 1943

With the bridge complete finishing construction on the manor was much simpler. Consider I have made no attempt to hide my wealth no one should be suspicious of the manor's size. Keeping the lab under wraps should be easy, especially with us so far out from town and close to the forest. I can't stand these small-town fools. Not a single one of them understands what they're sitting on. Sure, the existence of magic has been known ages and there are other towns with spellcasters and potion brewers, but none of them seem to realize how much stronger the aura is here. Rare regents that sell for hundreds are so common here you can find them in the grocery store. If these idiots realized just what they had they could have made a fortune and turned this place into one of the wealthiest cities in the world. But apparently they like their small town atmosphere. How such an insignificant town like this got an official pokemon league gym established is beyond me.

But it doesn't matter, everything is moved in and the lab is set up, and the gym provides a convenient excuse for my being here. As far as they're concerned my main purpose here is land development and my magical research is just a hobby. I've told them with the new gym their population will increase drastically and they'll need new housing developments. It took a bit of money to grease the wheels, but in the end I was able to gain ownership of most of the land they call the Twisty Woods. Apparently the locals have several superstitions about that place, ranging from the woods changing their own layout so anyone who enters is lost forever and a fairy that curses anyone who trespasses. While ridiculous, they may be on to more than they know. I doubt either of those two things to be true, but I do suspect the source of the ambient magic in town is somewhere in that forest. My equipment can pick up the excess aura all over town, but whenever I've tried to measure the forest's ambient magic the machines have overloaded. It's obvious something is in there.

I'll clear away the entire forest to get to it if I have too. There are some locals who object to my "construction" plans insisting that no part of the forest should be cleared away. Luckily, most of the town is being more economically sensible and understands the need for expansion. If we're lucky, I'll be able to find the source of magic without clearing away the majority of the forest. I know the more trees I have to cut down the more townspeople will switch sides. We shall see how it plays out. The demolition equipment should be here tomorrow and we'll be able to start clearing away land right away.

April 8, 1943

I can not begin to express my frustration with these setbacks. All attempts to bring construction equipment into the forest have failed. Everything we've brought has been destroyed. Every morning when we arrive to start work we find the machines dismantled or sometimes even crushed. Even for me replacing these things is a considerable expense.

At first, I thought it had to be some local eco-terrorist. No doubt sabotaging the equipment at night to try to protect their precious forest. Though, even I could not fathom how some of the damage was done. I suppose with a sufficiently powerful pokemon...Well that dragonite courier could have done it. But, it would seem the actual culprit isn't from the town at all much to my surprise.

I wouldn't believe it if I hadn't seen it myself. After too many nights of equipment being destroyed preventing us from starting in the morning, I arranged to have the new construction equipment arrive right at the crack of dawn so we could start right away. I was certain whatever foolish do-gooder would have no time to sabotage us this time. But... What I saw today... It was equally frustrating, terrifying and awe inspiring. The bulldozers attempted to move into the forest but never made it. Suddenly, all of them were lifted into the air simultaneously and thrown backwards. Strangely enough, none of the drivers were hurt, and most of them report their vehicle suddenly slowing down before they crashed into the ground. It seemed whoever or whatever did this has no desire to hurt the workers and instead is focused solely on the equipment.

After the bulldozers I watched as individual pieces of equipment simply came apart, falling into piles of scrap. The entire thing lasted less than ten minutes, but everything I brought in had been destroyed.

This is frustrating to say the least, but it proves I'm right about this forest. There's something in there, and it's trying to keep us out. I've given up on the plan to cut the entire thing down. Pretty sure with all the times my equipment has been destroyed the townspeople won't question me giving up on my attempts. Some development had started outside the forest's edge already, they've built a park next to the forest with a playground and were planning to build houses there. I suppose if nothing else I can recover some of the cost selling land back to them so they can continue their little community projects. I do find it strange the playground runs right up next to the forest and yet none of the equipment brought in to build it nor the playground itself were destroyed. It seems whatever guardian this place has only strikes if you intend to damage the forest itself.

So on to plan B. I've informed them despite my losses I intend to stick around for awhile to indulge my curiosity in the studies of magic. After all the money I've spent I told them I should get something for my investment even if it didn't work out, and that I was really quite comfortable in the my new home. They bought it easily.

It seems I'll need to take a different approach to find the source of magic though. I believe as long as I don't 'damage' the forest whatever guardian or force it has won't attack, so I will simply send search parties to scour the woods. It means hiring more men and spending more money, but at this point I'm so far in I can't stop. Hopefully I will have expeditions into the woods start before the end of the month. I'll have to make sure to give strict orders not to harm any of the vegetation, we can't take any risks of angering the guardian.

June 21, 1943

So, it would seem maybe the superstitions about the forest fairy had some merit to them after all. I would have considered the idea ridiculous had reality not proven itself to be far more insane.

I've been sending groups into the forest for weeks now trying to find the source of the ambient magic, and some of the groups claim to have encountered a child. From the description, it was an espeon, one with orange fur. Apparently, they said they would often catch the child watching them from the branches of a tree then flee the moment they saw him. I found this information confusing at first, how could a child survive alone in the woods like that? No one in town seems to know of an espeon living in the village, so either my men had seen something else or there was something unusual about the child.

It turned out to be the latter. One day one of my squads returned back to the manor and resigned immediately, The reason for their resignation, all of them had been transformed into children, barely old enough to go to grade school. Some of them had devolved from their current forms, but they were able to prove their identity despite their younger age.

At first I thought this no issue. There are plenty of people in this town who can brew youth potions as well as an antidote. Changing them back to normal and getting them to stay on the job seemed a simple task. Except, none of the antidotes worked. No matter we tried the age regression could not be reversed, they were stuck that way with no other option to return to their original ages than growing up again.

As for how this happened. They said it was the espeon child in the woods that did it to them. Apparently, he was sighted again, but this time instead of fleeing approached the team that had found him. He apparently asked them a lot of questions, about what they were doing there, what the outside of the forest was like. Apparently, he was curious, but nervous. They had the good sense not to mention searching for the source of magic, and apparently as they answered more of his questions, he became less timid.

Then he asked them to play with him. I suppose they must have been as curious as I am about what this child is and how he's surviving in the forest alone and agreed. And that was when it happened. According to their account, suddenly he created a bright glowing light between his paws and the entire team shrunk into little kids. Whatever kind of magic that was, it's not normal. It's far more powerful than anything we've encountered and nothing we can get our hands on is strong enough to reverse the process.

This is a setback, but it might be an opportunity. That kind of power... Either the child has been exposed to the source of magic within the forest or he himself is the cause of the ambient energy. Either way, I suspect if we are able to capture him and bring him in for research it'll allow us to make great progress in our studies.

August 23, 1943

Why must everyone I hire be so incompetent? There are now daily sightings of the espeon child and yet no one has been able to capture him. Apparently, he keeps treating their attempts to catch him as a game, and more and more of my men wind up having to go back to grade school.

This is getting ridiculous, and it's making it hard to hire replacements. People are getting spooked, and the ones who have been on long enough to know the full story can't keep their mouths shut. I swear, I will see that child captured if I have to do it myself. I've already taken the liberty of preparing a special cage for him.

With the power he has, there's a very real chance this child was the guardian who was destroying the construction equipment, meaning no normal cage could contain him. I've constructed a special cell for him in the basement, reinforced the walls and bars. An army of rampaging salamences wouldn't be able to scratch this thing.

But of course I still have to catch this kid. My men of course are useless as always and unable to do anything, except complain about how they don't remember tag being that rough. But, I might have an idea.

This child... He was shy appear before them at first and yet now shows up daily. And he keeps using his magic to make people the same age as him, and then apparently just tries to get them to play games with him. I think it's pretty clear he's lonely. There may be no one else in the woods but him. If I'm right, I may have the perfect trap to finally catch him.

It's going to require sacrificing the adulthood of a few more men... But I'm sure if I offer up enough money I'll get a few volunteers.

September 15, 1943

I've done it. I've captured the child of the forest at last. Just as described he's an orange espeon. He appears to be about six and a half years old. Amazing to think so much power in something that small. But regardless of how powerful he was, at the end of the day he was simply lonely child and that was something I could take advantage of.

The plan took longer than expected. But, I simply sent out a team to let them be transformed into kids, entertain the child for awhile, and then invite him over for more fun. He was surprisingly hesitant to leave the forest, but always got evasive when asked why. However, from what the teams were telling me it was clear he was dying to accept the invitation. Who knows how long he's been alone for? Eventually, he couldn't resist and the child I had been trying to capture for months walked right through the front door of my manor.

I had a team ready to sedate him as soon as he walked into the front door. When they fired the tranquilizers into him I almost felt bad. I could see the hurt in the child's eyes, I don't think he even had a concept of betrayal. That hurt look didn't last long. He went berserk. There was no turning people into children this time, he ripped down a wall and tossed it at the team that had shot him, destroyed a priceless chandelier and did damages to my foyer that will take months to repair. Thank goodness the sedatives kicked in when they did. For a moment I was worried his powers might have given him some immunity to them and that we were in serious trouble. Once he was unconscious, we wasted no time getting him into the special cell made for him.

Ah now that I have him, I have so many things I want to ask him. And so much I want to learn about him. I want to understand the source of his powers and see if there's a way to transfer or channel them. The next few months should be fruitful indeed.

September 22, 1943

This child is unreasonably stubborn. The day we captured him when he gained conscious the first thing he did was release a psychic blast that shook the entire manor. The cage thankfully held up and contained it, but there's no doubt now. He's the one whose been destroying my equipment. After realizing even his power wasn't enough to escape he became sullen and quiet. He has refused to speak to anyone or answer any questions.

If he continues to be this stubborn I may attempt to force the answers form his head. He may have powerful magic and his own psychic powers, but I am a fully evolved Alakazam and he is but a child. In a battle of minds I will easily overcome him. Still, taking the information by force that way risks serious damage to his mind and memory, and I may need those intact for future studies. Well, I'm sure he can't stay quiet forever. No doubt he'll eventually break. After all, I've told him that he's free to go the second he gives me the information I need.

That's a lie of course. He is far too valuable a specimen to release. I believe we are going to learn many things from him.

October 2, 1943

That brat made an escape attempt today and nearly succeeded! Apparently, he has some cleverness. I had explained to him how the walls and bars of his cage were reinforced so no psychic blast no matter how powerful would damage them. He had seen that himself on his first day in captivity. So, decided to go through the ceiling. Instead of one large blast he created a small concentrated one and tore right through. I feel like an idiot for not having had the same reinforcements above him. It is a situation we are rectifying now.

I can't believe how close we came to losing him, and it was mostly luck we managed to contain him again. I' am suddenly very glad that I have such opulent tastes. The kid had only seen his cell and the foyer. Once he broke out the manor must have seemed like a maze to him. Several of my staff members were knocked unconscious in his attempt to find a way out, and that reminds me of an earlier point.

When he destroyed the construction equipment he was always careful not to hurt the people inside. He's too innocent to be capable of taking a life. Even after his containment the most he was willing to do was knock my people out. We eventually had to gas the entire second floor to stop his rampage. I suspect if it had gone on much longer without him finding an exit he would have just ripped down the wall.

October 20, 1943

Our specimen has made yet another escape attempt. He is far more perceptive than he appears for his age. I had to review the security footage several times before I realized exactly what happened. This time there was no brute force, but he simply observed which staff members were on duty when and who had access to what. Then, when one of our scientists waked by his cage he snatched the cell key from him with his psychic powers without anyone even noticing. Rather than try to escape right at that moment he waited till 3 in the morning when no one would be on duty. He simply stuck his arms through the bars, unlocked his cell and stepped out.

I don't think he understands what technology is, living in the woods, and so paid no attention to the camera that watched him do it. The night guard was thankfully not asleep on the job this time and sounded the alarm as soon as it happened.

I didn't take any chances this time. I currently have every room in this building outfitted with gas dispensers to knock that can knock a fully grown tyranitar out in seconds. It meant taking out a few of my own security guards, but he succumbed to the gas again and we were able to return him to his cage. The guards will recover with just a minor headache, after all anything serious would risk harming the specimen. But I have had enough.

He had made two escape attempts and still refused to say a single word to me or any one of my staff. So, I decided it was time to force my way into his mind and take the answers I needed.

I was.... Not prepared for what I encountered. This child's defenses against such a tactic should have been impossible for someone at his age, maybe even altogether. Not only was I unable to force my way into his mind, but he was able to push back against me and apparently knock me out for several hours. I won't forgive that.

Though... I must say, I find it strange that's the most he's done. He's shown to have some control over time, to the point where he can change someone's age to where even the most powerful potion will fail to change them back. Why hasn't he used those powers in his escape attempts? My own power would have been greatly diminished if he had used that opportunity to revert be all the way back to an abra and yet... Nothing. Strange. He had no issue using his powers out in the forest when he wanted to play with my men.

Perhaps the power is tied to his emotions, and he simply can't use them when unhappy? Or maybe he thinks he's doing people favors making them younger, and so refuses to use it on those who have angered him. Either way I've had enough. It's clear we won't get anything from him willingly. Tomorrow we start physical experimentation. We'll start simple, examining some blood samples, maybe some tissue, then see what we can do from there. I'm working on the construction of a special unit to contain him during the experiments. Not only will be reinforced, but will restrain his arms, legs and tail in place as well as have a helmet to leave him blind and deaf. After the previous incidents I'm not taking any risks.

November 2,1943

Our research has produced some very interesting results. I'm not even sure what I'm looking at when I see it. It defies all reason. But... His blood samples don't match. When doing DNA testing sometimes a blood sample comes back showing him as a normal espeon, and sometimes it comes back showing him as something completely unknown. And the stranger part is that the samples already taken seem to randomly change what they read as.

So much power... Is he really an espeon? And yet if he was something greater I feel like we would not have been able to contain him. We've barely held him as he is. Still, I want to know more about this unknown DNA that shows up in some blood samples. Perhaps he is an espeon, but he's been touched or altered in some way. We're going to continue experiments, see if we can force any physical changes in his appearance to give us a hint of what this other unknown pokemon is.

December 1, 1943

Most of the lab equipment is gone and we have identified the unknown DNA. But... I don't even know where to begin. We had tried several tests, exposed him to several different evolution stones and materials, Dynamax enery. We even tried that ridiculous island culture's dances to power up moves. No reaction from any of them.

There was one thing we've known for awhile that might produce a reaction. We've just been reluctant to use it. Regardless of the trouble he's caused he is still a child. Yet, there is a very real possibility if he does possess the ability to transform or change in some way it may only come out when under extreme duress. If he were in intense physical pain we suspected the transformation would occur.

So we proceeded with the next experiment. Once we had him in his usual restraints we exposed him to an electric current and slowly increased the voltage. He finally broke his silence, mostly screaming in pain.

And then it happened.

Power like nothing I had seen before. He was surrounded by a glowing light and the restraints on him shattered and his body changed. There was a new pokemon before us, one we had heard of spoken only in legends.

Mew.

The first thing he did was crush the device we had been using to torture him into a small sphere no bigger than a baseball. I feel this is important to emphasize that the device was roughly the size of a minivan. Then he turned his attention to the rest of the lab equipment and all of our research note. He intended to destroy everything and take away all the knowledge we had gained. Everyone on hand did their best to stop him but he simply flung them aside with a psychic wave as if they were nothing more than a fly. Again, he avoided killing anyone and I am now very thankful for this naïve child's innocence. It may be the only reason we're all still alive.

We attempted to gas him again, but he moved the air itself creating a pocket bubble around him, with the gas unable to reach him. We resorted to the tranquilizer rifles and the darts would just stop and fall to the ground inches before hitting him. So... This is the power of a legendary pokemon.

In the end, the only reason he's still in captivity has nothing to do with our own efforts. No, the transformation seemed to burn him out. After this raw display of power he suddenly changed back to his original espeon form and collapsed to the ground. Then he muttered something about having to protect the spring.

I would bet anything this spring is the source of magic in this town. Perhaps exposure to the spring is what has made this child so powerful. Think of what we could do with that kind of power on tap. It seems it has its dangers. He burnt himself out with that transformation and didn't wake up for two days. We have him contained again, but I am unsure how to proceed with further experimentation. We know the extent of his power now, and we suspect there's a spring within the forest he was guarding. We just have to find a way to get that information from him. I've had people out exploring the forest every day, but no one has found it and they're constantly getting turned around. There must be some secret to actually reaching the spring.

I have no choice. I will attempt to steal the answers from his mind again. But this time I will not do so alone. I have called in every psychic type ally I can think of, hired several mercenaries. We total twelve in number and with our combined strength we will break through his mental defenses and take his memories.

December 19, 1943

Everything is gone. All of it.

My allies arrived as planned, and we worked together to probe into the espeon's mind. He tried to resist us, and did a surprisingly good job. He was subtle about how he fought back, attempting to disable us one at a time. We lost two members before we realized that he wasn't just pushing back against out mental attack but lashing out at individuals. In the end we broke through. We could finally see his memories.

There is a spring in the forest, it holds great power, but the kid doesn't know why. He only knows that the one he refers to as dad told him to watch over it. And he has been, for over two hundred years. This child was living in the forest before this town was even built. And yet he remains a child.

We would have gotten more information, gotten the location of the spring, but the child let out a psychic scream begging for help. This was not unexpected. Having your mind physically torn apart and your memories stolen is not exactly a painless ordeal.

But, none of us expected something to answer his call.

No one can agree on what type of pokemon it was. Everyone who saw it gave a different account. One report said it was a garchomp, another a milotic. Other reports also sighted the intruding pokemon to be a rhyhorn, luxray, and a charizard. During the attack we left the specimen in his cell to try to find and contain whatever was here. But it was as if it could just disappear and reappear anywhere in the manor.

I only encountered it once. I didn't make out much. I only saw two glowing eyes before I was suddenly sent flying out the second story window. I think it's only luck that I survived. Whatever pokemon this was, it was not as innocent as the child we had captured.

By the time it was done the mansion lay in ruins, all of the lab equipment destroyed, every last research file burnt into ashes. The only information we have left is my personal journal that had been in my coat pocket during the attack. Everything else... Gone.

The cell we built for the child in the basement was still standing, but the child himself was gone. It would seem that this new pokemon had answered his psychic scream and come to rescue him.

I do know the child has returned to the forest. Even with all the research lost we still knew there was a magic spring somewhere in there. But none of my men could even enter without being lifted into the air and flung backwards. No matter what time of day we try, or from what spot in the forest it always happens. Perhaps he has some connection to the forest that lets him sense where intruders are coming from. Either way, he's back and he's made it very clear that none of us will be allowed in the forest.

And even if we could get in... If he's acting as guardian again what could we do? We only captured him the first time by feigning friendship. We only managed to hold him by having an entire facility armed with knock-out gas. Out here, in his world, we don't stand a chance. Again, I found myself very thankful that we were facing this innocent creature that refused to kill. I think we may have taught him anger, and I fear what that means for others' future.

My funds are running low. This research and the constant repairs has been draining me dry. It would have all been worth it if we got to the spring, but it's clear that will never happen. This operation is dead. I'm sure there are other springs or locations out there in the world that also produce high levels of magic, but they likely have their own guardians and I have no resources left to look for them.

I have lost everything.

I am leaving town today with nothing but the clothes on my back. I know not where I go or what I'll do, but I know I can't stay here. The thought of being near that forest, being close to that child who we have angered, and being at risk of meeting the pokemon that had saved it again. No, I think I will leave this region completely and never return. It's best for me to leave this part of me behind.

And so I'm leaving my research journal behind. It would just be another thing tying me to the past. This is the final entry. If someone has been foolish enough to explore this manor and find this journal, then I give you this advice. Stay away from the forest.

For I believe we have made its guardian less forgiving.
